If you're looking for an authentic small town country diner, well here you go. Even though some people in my 20-member group were not very please by the food, I got some fried catfish and fried potatoes that were tasty. The service was kind of slow..but once again, there were 20 of us there. I unlike most people in my group was excited to see a restaurant you could still smoke in...its the first that I've been in since I picked up smoking. Pretty good and not too pricey either.

Nightmare lived. Hair in cheeseburger, trying not to vomit. Recommend not getting anything that they have to handle a lot... Stick with fried foods.... Ugh, always so gross finding a hair mixed into your meat. Barf.

The good: this place is spacious and is good for a group. The have a wide variety of foods on their menu. The people are also very friendly and helpful. They also have pool tables. Played some pool while i waited for my order. The bad: The service was a bit slow. Maybe it is because our waiter was new on the job. For a non-smoker this may not be the best place to be. The food was also not that great. I ordered chicken strips and fries. Drop by if you are really hungry and need something to eat.

Big open windows, smoky atmosphere, and the place to play some pool. The servers and cooks did their best do accommodate 20 Berea College students as we trickled into the diner, however food came slowly but was filling. I ordered a Recees shake that was an obvious combination of peanut-butter, Hershey's syrup, milk and ice-cream. I enjoyed my chicken sandwich, which had a perfectly grilled piece of chicken and alot of oil to accompany the meat. If you're hungry, its worth the stop. But I wouldn't go out of my way to make this a 'special destination'.

The moment I stepped in Frances Dinner, I was greeted with a welcoming cigarette smoke. The owner of the house was very busy but tried her best to accommodate us. Dinning twenty Berea College students at the same time is obviously a little hard. However, her crew and herself were working the fastest they could to get our orders, provide us with drinks and so forth. My body was aching of exhaustion and waiting for dinner for more than half an hour made my day even worse. I guarantee you I smoked for more than 90% today. I saw how breathless I could be with secondary smoke. On top of that, the waiter totally forgot the dessert I ordered. I gave up on them and just decided to get out of that place. Clean air to breath, calm waitress, and a little room for the seats would convince me to go back again. Luwam Okbazion

Great prices for the food that is offered. Its all home cooking typical for a diner, but it seemed like it just came out of a frozen bag. Beside the food, I enjoyed the pool tables you could play at while waiting for food and the servers were friendly. They have daily specials. I got the fried fish, deviled eggs, side salad, and corn bread. It wasn't the best but I enjoyed the atmosphere!

Probably the best choice in Hazard for home-cookin'. The menu is a mix of Southern homestyle favorites and diner (or "dairy bar", as we say here) standards, so your opinion probably depends a lot on what you order. The best entrees are the specials that don't appear every day like the salmon patties, fried chicken, and ribs and potatoes. The mustard greens and fried potatoes are my favorites side dishes, or the fresh green beans when they have them in the summertime.

Pretty cheap & pretty tasty most of the time. A large menu selection, daily specials, tons of sides. If you don't like cigarette smoke, don't go. If you're expecting the best sandwich you've ever had, don't go. If you want a laid back atmosphere and a good sandwich/food for a decent price - GO! When I've gone it's usually moderately busy and the wait is around 10min or so for a group of around four. Also, if you like pie - GO! :)

3 stars for hanging tough! I stopped in for a greasy brunch to start my day, and that is what I got. The service wasn't very friendly, and the atmosphere wasn't either. However, if you want a diner meal in the middle of Appalachia- this is for you. There's something to be said for a quiet local spot that doesn't pretend to be something it isn't. The food was really good and very cheap, and that's that! I got the tenderloin with biscuits and gravy and it more than hit the spot. Sometimes quiet is good, like when your heads pounding from the night before, and in those times we are lucky that places like this exist. Give it a try- who knows, you might even get a smile with that!

We called ahead to alert them that there were 21 in our party. They said come ahead. When we arrived that had mistaken another party of 18 for us. The look of shock and awe on the waitress face as we walked in was as good as the Wednesday night special- meatloaf.

Simple, delicious country diner fare! It's nothing super exciting. The fried pork chops are very good.

It was dinner time and a group of friends and I decided to stop at a family owned restaurant instead of eating at a chain like McDonalds or Arby's. We pull up in the parking lot and I was not enthusiastic about the restaurant, but I didn't want to judge from the outside and decided to give the place a chance. The atmosphere of the place reminded me of a truck stop, meets mom and pop dinner, meets pool bar. Personally, I am not a smoker and I did not like that the building was smoker friendly on the inside. Cleanliness of the establishment through me off a little too, because no one used gloves in preparation of the food. Though the menu had a decent amount of choices and my meal was average, chili cheese fries and a chicken sandwich. The place wasn't something memorable, but for a quick meal it is an alright place to eat.

With an atmosphere that reminded more of home, France's Diner really emphasized down home and country. My entire trip in Eastern Kentucky has been an emotional rollercoaster, and eating at this restaurant would have been special except for a few things. My colleagues had a hard day and were in no mood to wait for food/service. The run-down waitor/waitress did their best to keep our large group happy, but a mixture of cigarette smoke and the time between ordering and receiving food kept us all on the edge. Overall, France's Diner is inexpensive and really a nice place to go when it isn't crowded.

My first experience at Frances's Diner wasn't really a good one. It kind of reminded me of a country home dining space. When we arrived, we had to clean off the tables ourselves before seating. Maybe it was because they wasn't expecting a large group, but the entire atmosphere was an unpleasant one. I knew from the time I sat down, that I would not enjoy my meal. For one, i have a problem with cleanliness and that place wasn't too close to being clean, but not far from dirty. Also, it was the organization of how the server took the orders and delivered the orders to us. It was so unorganized. I did not like the cigarette atmosphere at all and all of the flied that were surrounding us. The meal wasn't too pleasant either. My chicken tenders were a little over cooked and the homeade gravy for my mashed potatoes was lumpy and it did not smell good! I'm a city girl, restaurants like that gets under my skin and make me feel uncomfortable! I was really uncomfortable the entire time.
