While driving along I-65 South, we were getting pretty hungry for lunch and decided to pull off the highway in E-Town. We rolled into Ryan's Family Steakhouse, which is a family style buffet restaurant and the Lunch Buffet was advertised for $5.29. Sweeeeet!!!! The parking lot was almost full, which is a pretty good sign. I've been to Ryan's for dinner when I was in TX several years ago and spent under $10 for a whole lotta food. Upon entering, it's pay first at the registers. We ordered 2 Adult Lunch Buffets ($5.29 each) and 2 Soft Drinks ($1.99 each). Senior citizens can get the Lunch Buffet with drink included for $4.99, a great bargain! There were lots of seniors citizens in the building! This good sized restaurant has ample seating in several dining areas with the buffet stations and bars in the center. The place was pretty busy and most tables were occupied near the buffet area. We found a table in a quiet dining room at the far end of the restaurant. It took a while for someone to notice we were here. Our waitress brought over some fresh baked rolls with honey butter, which were sooo good! The Buffet offers several hot and cold stations including homestyle hot foods, salad bar, soups, Mexican bar, fruit bar, and dessert bar. The food selections were quite extensive including pot roast, meatballs, fried chicken, corn dogs, bbq ribs, fish, shrimp, mac & cheese, mashed potatoes, spaghetti, vegetables, onion rings, cold salads, chowder, chili, and much more. For dessert-fresh fruit, cobblers, cakes, pies, cheesecake, bread pudding, banana pudding, cookies, brownies, and soft serve ice cream. The food was not fancy, but tasted pretty good for a southern style buffet. My friend was very overwhelmed by the selection of food, and he really enjoyed the fried chicken with mashed potatoes and corn. The service was good and we were given refills on the soft drinks. We were stuffed and waddled out of the restaurant satisfied with our lunch and very happy about the low price, under $20 with tax and tip.

All I can say is wow. Our family went here for dinner only to find literally everything on the bar wiped out at 7 with nothing coming out over the next 30 minutes. We asked our waitress, Teresa, if anything would be coming out. She said that they were working on it. A part member said that it is frustrating when you come out for dinner, pay, and there is no food. Her responce was a incredibly aggressive "yeah, try having 250 soldiers here. I said we're trying." I could not believe how rude she was. We asked to speak with a manager and we did see her talk to a manager...who rolled her eyes and never came over. Forget this place man. Staffed mostly b ex-felons and employees who have no manners.

These days, I try to talk my way out of eating at Ryan's whenever family or friends want to go there. It wasn't always this way. When I was very young and poor, I'd eat anything that was put in front of me and be grateful for it. Also, maybe the food was better then. I base this review on more recent visits to Ryan's. If you didn't already know, Ryan's is an "all you can eat" buffet. Honestly, "The Hog Trough" or "The Slop Shovel" would be a more appropriate name for this chain of restaurants. It seems that quantity is far more important to most of its customers than quality. Most of the food seems to be fatty, jiggly, mushy or runny, terribly overcooked, and lacking flavor. Ryan's is one of the most depressing dining experiences I've had.
