Five stars. Herb and Thelma's is exactly what it's suppose to be. Prices and decor are from 1979 (or before). The well-seasoned grill is over 60 years old and every burger tastes great as the meat is fresh from Bessler's Meat on Madison. Joe bought the joint at the first of the year, and he and his wife have given it a good scrubbin' and a larger beer selection including Upland and Rhinegeist. It's pretty intimidating going in, but relax and it will grow on you. They do allow smoking after 4pm, but I've only occasionally seen one person with a cigarette at any given time. I've had some friends avoid it for that reason, but there is a second room and the ventilation is good. Get down there, especially after a ride on the Devou Trails. Better yet, don't go. I don't want it to be too popular.

I'm updating my review because it is under new management, the burgers ($3 cheeseburger, $5.25 double) are still delicious BUT theyre open past 5pm on Saturdays (With non-smoking from 11a-4pm). Just as good as before but with a little more weekend time to check out the place, enjoy a burger and beer, and talk with the owners! If you like burgers and have never been, GO! If you've been but not recently, GO back!

I recently tried their Double Cheese Burger for lunch. Man... Was it good. They really take their time cooking their meals. I even came back for dinner and got the Italian Sausage a Sandwich. It was great. And their always so nice.

The burgers are amazing, the craft beer varied and plentiful, and the prices great. What more could you ask for?

Visited this place after a friend told me about it. I've seen this place on Yelp many times but I never knew exactly where it was even though I've lived in Covington for years. My first experience was a carry out order, but I hope to be back to dine in soon. This place is pretty no frills, but the cheeseburger was classic and delicious. I got a bag of Sun chips and a can of sprite plus the burger for $4.75. That blew my mind. I tipped the bartender/cook $2 on the order and he was blown away. PEOPLE, please tip your bartender on carry out orders. They spend the time putting together your food and making sure it's right and in this case, the guy cooked my food and packed it all up for me. I'm glad to have given this guy a tip considering he provided me with great service. Super friendly place! I will be back to dine in soon!

The burger was basic but very good. The atmosphere was divey (as expected) and smokey. The place still has potential for bigger things but is simply too smokey for my personal taste.

Great place with tons of character and fantastic people! Cash only - but totally worth it! BEST burger in town!

I love writing long reviews, but you can see from the other reviewers what this joint is all about so I'll keep it simple. - Fan Freakin' Tastic burgers. Hand Pattied, cooked on a flat top with choice of white buns or rye bread. Pickles and Onions included. - Great service. Chip also keeps it simple, and is a very nice host. Obvious Red's fan (I hear rumor that Pete Rose used to hang here). - Small atmosphere in an old room. - Cheap. I thought "$3.75 for a double, must be a small burger." I was wrong. I'll do a single next time. Makes the list.

Great little place, nothing special about anything. Just a great handmade burger. We had a cheeseburger, dbl cheeseburger 2bags of chips and 2 pops for $12.50. We will defiantly stop in again.

As a kid my mom would go here and get me and my brother hamburgers, literally the best things. I don't know what kind of beef they use but this place can cook it. However no idea what the bar itself is like, but for a burger it a good spot

My first time visiting after a friend recommended it. Folks, this place is legit. Five of us twenty and thirty-somethings decided to make this our lunch choice on this dreary November lunch. It is cold out and we needed something stick-to-your-ribs kind of meal. We parked on the street and went inside. There were about 8 other patrons inside, a four top and a two top. All older than 50 or 60. EVERYONE greeted us - the owners/staff and the patrons! The four top stood and offered us their table, and the table was quickly cleaned off and we sat. The waitress gave us the run down of the menu and beer offerings. The menu is VERY basic. Want tomato on your burger? too bad, your choices are onion and pickles. Bacon and BBQ sauce? nope. There are no french fries. Almost dinged a star for that, but they had a decent chip selection (sun chips, pretzels, popcorn, etc). The beer selection is not vast, but they do offer at least one of just about everything. I had the Upland Dragon IPA. On to the point that matters - I had the double cheeseburger, plain. WOW. I read good reviews and when I first walked in, I had my doubts. They were cooked medium well and had just enough of a crust on them to add a bit of a crunch. No fancy burger bun either, just a run of the mill bun. The burger had a lot of flavor! I'd consider this place over Five Guys and possibly Mad Mikes! The double cheese burger is $3.75 - it is a great deal! The patties are thick, but smaller than the bun. Not idea for me since you get extra bread initially, but it was very tasty! I can't overstate how friendly the staff we CASH ONLY

I went past many times and was afraid to go in, just because I couldn't see inside. One day I ventured inside and was amazed at how chilled out it was. The super friendly owner told me it's a family establishment, and families eat there - which I have seen on subsequent visits. So it feels safe and relaxed, not rowdy at all. Took my parents for lunch here when they visited from out of town and they loved it. Huge burgers at a steal of a price, served with genuine friendliness. Very cool little place.

If you like old school, this is your place, and I don't mean fake 50's diner old school. But in the way that this is a place that time forgot about, but the formula is still the same, good service, good basic American food(cooked right in front of you) and good prices(don't really think they have changed for decades). I am sure there has been updates along the way, I actually heard that some time back in the day there was a mudslide that took of half the back of the house. Sure they allow smoking and it is not well lit up, but that was just how they rolled back in the day. Chip is the owner and he took over the place from his parents, he is the only employee to my knowledge. They have the basic burger and hotdogs which Chip makes right there in the corner kitchen. Usually I go for a cheeseburger with a side hotdog or a bowl of homemade chilli. Again, Chip keeps the Burger simple with two add on options: pickles and onions. Last time is was there the regulars "group pressured" me into getting a double cheeseburger, which I of course did... I was also dared to try a Brian(I think that is what he called it), which is two cheese melts with a burger in the middle, maybe next time. This place has so much going for it that you can't help loving it, I would even go as far as calling it a piece of NKY history. There is one person that reviewed this place and suggested that they changed it up, this just means you don't get it! This place works because it is simple and do not have an extensive menu or fancy beer selection. But maybe you mistook it for a Max and Erna's... Sometimes less, really is more...

Old school. That's the way I feel about Herb & Thelmas. It's hard to believe that I lived in the Cincinnati area for nearly 30 years and had never visited this fine establishment until earlier this year. A good friend suggested we meet for lunch there and when I walked in and gave the place a once over, it felt like I stepped into 1979. The place probably hasn't changed much since then and other than a television, is relatively untouched by most technologies. An example of this is that they are a cash only joint, which usually bothers me but something about it was endearing here. The guy behind the bar was incredible kind and the burger he made for me was excellent and right off the grill. Not to mention everything on the menu is not far from 1979 prices either, you can get a beer, a dog, a burger and get out for less than 10$. The only negatives I can see that keep it from a 5 star are the credit cards thing, there were alot of smokers puffing away and parking can be tricky. But if you let it add to the overall charm of the place, you will be back.

simply good food at rock bottom prices. It's like 1970 hit this place and never left. LOVE IT! I'll be a regular. Oh and get the grilled onions.

Well, this is a tavern. I guess. Maybe more of a snack stand. H&Ts doesn't really look inviting from the outside. An old building with no windows, really no signage to indicate it's a bar aside from a non-illuminated sign outside. The interior is incredibly small, with ~5 stools, and two tiny tables crammed into a place the size of a bedroom. They were surprisingly full for a Sunday afternoon, so I guess they have a good network of regulars. I will say for one, H&T is cheap. A burger is only going to run you $2. They have a small, domestic beer selection, bottle only. The burger is pretty much "from Kroger" ingredients, and tastes exactly like a burger you could fry up in a skillet at home. Yeah it's not bad, but it's not life changing either. This place has potential, but it needs to be a bit larger. Get some light, an expanded beer selection, and then we'll be talking.

You have to be brave. Herb and Thelma's isn't the most welcoming from the outside. The building is old, the neighborhood may look iffy to out-of-towners, but if you have the courage to hop off I-75 turn right on Pike, drive up a hill, and step onto their well worn stoop, you'll be in one of the friendliest places you've been too. It's a small place. When my family and I walked in, everyone (who looked like they'd been coming for 40 years) gave us a friendly nod. The bar keep asked "what'll you have". We said, burgers. While we waited, he flirted and goofed with my 9-year old. Everyone relaxed. A guy at the bar turned and struck up a conversation with us. This is an old school, friendly, neighborhood place. The burgers are nothing fancy, but well made on a griddle, served on paper plates and prices haven't changed since Bench was behind the plate.

I love this place. I've been going here since I was a kid. I usually just order ahead and pick up the food though. They have the best burgers in town, and awesome chili. They're really cheap too.

I'm biased. I love this place! Bartender always remembers us, Cheap beer, good food. Homemade burgers and fresh off the grill sausages. This isn't gormet burgers but straight to the point, minimal, "I need food in my belly" food. New owner has turned this place 180° by putting taps and getting local breweries in the door. He plans on getting some larger windows. In a bit of a rough area but we are all grown ups and know the bar is a safe haven. Our diamond in the rough! Thank you for being so friendly!

The perfect throwback to where your dad used to take you. It's the return of the professional bartender, the place you can go alone and spend 3 hours talking about the history of the building, the grill and local beer with Joe. Go there hungry for the perfect burger, homemade chili, bean soup, bologna sandwich, brat, met, whatever. It's perfect from the wood paneling on the wall to the vintage Wiedeman's signs adorning the tavern. Save me a barstool.
