My brother and I ate here twice in 4 days. It was pretty good, especially for what I was expecting out of this part of Kensucky. The staff were all very polite, and the food was good. We had the Chicken Bacon Ranch pizza the first night, and it was tasty, but the second night we had the Mountaineer. Holy shit, it was really good and had all sorts of fresh toppings. They put some garlic in their pizza crust which really sets it off. I also had some garlic bread, which was buttery as a motherfucker. Now, the only downside to the mountaineer was what happened after eating it. It gave my brother the worst gas he's had in YEARS. I mean, this motherfucker was stinking like nobody's business. Which is normally pretty funny, but we were sharing a hotel room. I suggested he go fart in the elevator, which he did. I then suggested that he sneak down to the first floor, walk up to the front desk, look the attendant in the eyes while he farts and then walk away without saying anything. He wouldn't go that far with it. What a pussy.

The pizzas are pretty good, best around, but that's not saying much. The service is about as slow as it can be. One night I called in an order and still had to wait 30 mins. Sometimes it is worth the wait....other times the pizzas aren't so good. Oh yeah, very pricey too.

Good pizza but if you are wanting a salad don't bother. The "all veggie" Alternative Salad was as alternative as a Celine Dion ballad on Muzak.

  • Jackie S.

Had a pizza there for the first time. Toppings were good but not enough sauce. My biggest dislike was the crust, too much big pizza dough for my taste. Willing to give the place another try with a pasta dish.

I am a huge fan of Papaleno's! My friends and I seriously go there whenever we get the chance. The staff is friendly, the atmosphere is chill and great for families, and the food is delicious. The pizza is reasonably priced and most of the pasta is also. They have a lot of deals as well to save you money! This place is a must when you visit Berea.

Great food largest bread sticks I have ever seen in my life. Prices are reasonable. Not fancy but nice. I would come back. I had the baked spaghetti.

  • Lauren H.

Papaleno's is great! I go to Berea College and that means I have tried just about everything on the menu. The service is reasonably fast and they have free Wifi. I recommend getting a pizza because they hand toss the dough and put so much delicious cheese on the pizza! My overall favorite thing from Papaleno's is the chocolate cake! This is literally the best chocolate cake I have EVER tasted!!! Overall I highly recommend going to Papaleno's to experience some mouthwatering food!

I just paid for a greasy pizza . It is expensive and you have to stand in line to order , do not walk in and expect the waiter to come to your table . There are better places in Berea , do not waste your time !

  • Harry T.

I have eaten at Papaleno's a few times, and I have always enjoyed my meal. I just do not enjoy the wait times. I wish the food was served faster.

  • Adriana W.

Papaleno's is okay . It is one of the hot commodities down in berea and known for their homemade bread and pizza crust . But honestly I'm not a huge fan of them . Their pizza taste weird and they are over priced . My time that I did enjoy their food though is when I got the shrimp Alfredo which was very delicious and worth my money

It was a great place to get some Italian food, while staying within the college student budget. It definitely makes you crave their bread often, so I find myself coming back again and again. If you need to be full and have some money left over, this is the place to be!

  • Jackson D.

Best Italian in Berea. Really great breadsticks and great pasta, spaghetti, lasagna, etc

  • Katherine M.

This is a great place to eat. It's a nice warm environment, and the food is really good. The sandwiches here are some of the largest I have ever seen. The pizza is wonderful and cheesy, and the entire restaurant smells like it. The pastas are good, though i would recommend the baked ones they have. The meals come with a bread stick drenched in garlic butter, and it's something to look forward to. The soup of the day is really affordable, but it's enough for an entire meal. I look forward to my visits here, and i never leave dissatisfied.

  • Adam S.

Great pizza and even better lasagna. I was told the Lasagna is a old family recipe and you can taste it. The large garlic breadstick they give you with your meal is a little overindulgent, but it tastes great. Great menu in a small college town. Always have great, ready made salads as well. A lot of options on the menu. The only thing missing from the meal is a pitcher of beer. If the town was wet (moist) and they were allowed to serve beer, it would be an absolute 5 star. Definitely the place to eat if you are coming through Berea.

  • Suzy W.

Pretty good, especially for the price! Both of us ate until stuffed for less than $15. We really enjoyed the breadsticks, which we were surprised came with a lot of the entrees. Not enough meatballs came on the spaghetti & meatballs, and it seemed like maybe some of the pizza toppings should have been cut a bit smaller so you'd get more in each bite, but these are very minor complaints. We'll be back!

We popped into Papaleno's while visiting family over the holidays. Nestled in downtown Berea, Papaleno's offers up some very good Italian food. First off - the four stars is based almost entirely on the garlic bread (which on its own merits five stars). If you go here, you must try the garlic bread. Unlike most pizza-joint garlic breads which are either the pizza dough in another form or a thick-crusted Italian loaf, Papaleno's serves up a softer bread (almost like a yeast bread dinner-roll) in a POOL of melted garlic butter. The result is fantastic and I would return for the garlic bread alone. The pizza is also solid - I'd rate it a three stars. The sauce is clearly tomato puree (not paste) based, which gives it a very fresh, clean taste. The crust is crispy on the outside and chewy under the rim (the way I like it). Papaleno's leans heavy on the garlic (did I mention the bread). You get a lot of fresh garlic taste in the sauce and then you get hit with garlic salt on the rim of the crust. Overall, this proved to be a bit too much garlic for my tastes (skipping the garlic salt on the crust would've been a nice taste break). Great place in a town with tons of charm.

Great atmosphere in this place! Love the kind of college/hip vibe it has in the front seating area. Also the pizza...is great. Good hometown spot, if I lived closer I would for sure try other items on the menu.

Get a bread stick. Love the pizza (even if it is a bit on the greasy side). and get another bread stick.

  • Holden D.

Best pizza joint in town! This mom and pop pizza shop has been apart of the Berea experience for me ever since I was a little boy traveling here with my grandparents. The food is absolutely amazing, and the ambiance of being in a local small business is a great feeling while admiring the beauty of Berea College's campus.

I enjoyed eating here, and being only a few yards away from great enterprises such as the historic Boone Tavern Hotel and the Log House Craft Gallery. The service is not the best but they did have very good food. I have eaten here several times and have found that they tend to have quality food. I do not like the dim ambiance of the restaurant and think it would feel a lot more inviting were there more natural lighting. Overall, I think that it is a good restaurant.

  • Taylor S.

My friends and I dropped into Papaleno's Restaurant the other day for lunch. One of the reasons I enjoy Papaleno's is the atmosphere is always fun and it's the place to be during lunch. My friends and I split the 16 in Mountaineer Pizza and we couldn't even finish all of the deliciousness! I love that it comes with just about everything on it except the kitchen sink and is well worth the trip! I also got the Mango Sweet Tea which I was really concerned about at first but I ended up enjoying it.

Solid Pizza, Good Service... Cute Girls working there... What more could you ask for! Oh yeah. Beer... But it's in a dry county

  • Katherine R.

The cost of my salad ($5.95 plus tax) was pretty prohibitive, considered the salad consisted of wilted iceberg lettuce, waxy old cheddar crumbles, a fourth of a hard boiled egg, and a sprig of broccoli. The crowning glory? A gluey packet of Italian dressing. I don't call that a salad, I call it a disappointment. The pizza was very doughy, nothing to write home about. Not a meal I would recount with any relish. Seriously guys. $6.00 for a salad merits a more decent protein source. Chickpeas, black beans, goodness, anything.

  • James M.

Been going here for years and the food and service has been consistently great.

  • Jonathan R.

Located in the heart of Berea College. They have really good pizza, usually me and my friends go and order a Mountaineer Pizza after we get paid at the end of the month . The service is always great, the pizza does not take long, there are TVs always playing something interesting, and the pizza...well, the pizza is the best pizza from Berea. The prices are more in the expensive side which is not a surprise after the quality of their restaurant and their foods. Is a must-go place if coming to Berea.

If you imagine a typical college town pizza pub, Papa Leno's would probably not be too far off from what you conjure up in your mind. Dim interior with quirky decorations, tons of students, faculty and staff from the college, and the odd tourist on the way to, or back from, Florida, can all be found there. The pizza is quite good, though I wish they had more oddball toppings like spinach and broccoli. Pasta specialties, ditto - ravioli, spaghetti, chicken parm all really good and they come with the garlic bread for which PL's is famous. The sandwiches are ok - a Philadelphian wouldn't recognize their Philly cheese steak, but if you just think of it as a shredded steak sandwich it's good enough. Their sweet tea and desserts are also something to come back for. Haven't tried their salads so can't comment on those. I haven't been back in a few months due to finances (just graduated; no job yet) but I will return, regularly and often as long as I live in this area.

When I first walked into Papaleno's Restaurant I was not impressed it was very crowded. It was not until after I got my order, sat down and took a bite of the garlic bread did I realize how amazing this place was and why it was so crowded. Never have I tasted such delicious garlic bread, I feel as though there is a secret spice or two added in. The pasta is fantastic. The vegetables are very fresh and they give a great size serving. The prices are very reasonable for college students and average income families. They have a very patient and kind staff that puts up with all our noise.

The best thing about Papa Lenos? The smells emanating from the building. I walk past it everyday on my way to and from work and those aromas are truly intoxicating. Unfortunately, the food itself rarely lives up to the smells. To be fair, I have had a PERFECT pizza there at least three times. I mean PERFECT - delicious chewy AND crispy dough with generous tasty cheese and toppings. Unfortunately, I have eaten there nearly 20 times over the last 15 years and all of the rest of those visits have been dampened by terrible pizza. If it weren't for those seductive smells, I wouldn't keep gambling with my hard-earned money by patronizing the place. I just keep hoping things will change, that this time it will be like that last good time, and so I give it another shot, only to find myself disappointed. The quality issues vary - one time it will be a burnt (literally black-bottomed) pizza while the next time it could be a pie with only enough cheese to cover half of its' surface. The one-time I branched out and ordered a sub, I received a soggy/squishy/bland mess of mush. I don't mind paying more to support local businesses - truly I don't - but I do object to a restaurant that can be great being inferior instead.

I really liked Papalenos. You can go to hang out there, go on a date, have a business meeting. It is perfect for any setting. I typically get the Italian sandwich with chips. The bread is super good that is on the sandwich. I have also had their chicken Parmesan. It was very good, but the bread was like covered in butter on the bottom of the pan. It was covered in cheese too, which may or may not be a good thing depending on if you are lactose intolerant.... Also, I think their salads could be a little more pretty and not come premade! One time a friend of mine tried ordering a salad without cheese, but they came pre-made so they couldn't do anything. However, they did offer to pick off most of it, but my friend said it was okay and not to bother. That was good service! They have yummy cheesecake! Overall, a nice and casual local restaurant to eat at while in Berea.

The food was great! I was with my two sisters and we all ordered different items, we tasted everything on the table and we were all three very please. Really good food. We will be back!

At the time of arriving for my tour of the college, my friend said that this place is excellent to eat at. So, my family and I ate here. It was before they had the new room. It was so hard to get a table because it was limited. I am glad to see that more people can eat their delicious pizza and pasta. If you like pasta, this is the place to be. On the side comes butter bread. It is very good. I recommend having the bread.

By far my favorite Italian restaurant! They have amazing pizza but their manicotti is fantastic. The service is wonderful and they have the best desserts in Berea. Much better than chain Italian restaurants in service and food quality!

Big portions, great taste, homemade bread--need I say more? As a student, I frequented Papa Leno's. It was always a treat to go, especially with our meager paychecks. Got to eat there again yesterday and the Stromboli Sub tasted the same as it always has, which comforting and like coming back home. The sub came out piping hot with a side of fries that were crisp, hot and had the perfect texture. You can't go wrong with anything here. Between my roommates from undergrad and I, we favored the Stromboli, the Chicken Philly, and the lasagna (which is to DIE for!). I've never had a bad meal from this place in the 6+ years that I've been dining there. Even though I live out of town now, this is one of the places I would gladly make a two hour trip for.

Looking for a quick and tasty bite to eat? Do you want to sit down or take it to go? Papa Leno's has decent prices for their salads, soups, pizza slices, sandwiches, pastas, and dessert. Most dishes come with butter smothered garlic bread that if your not careful, will fill you up before you finish your meal. I'm not much of a heavy pizza eater but I do like Papa Lenos, especially the large portions that people leave at their tables that allow for freebies!

The restaurant is one of the famous in Berea especially for Berea college students. Me and my friends went there and I ordered Grilled Beef with fries. The food is good. But as my friend told me that this place's spaghetti is famous. The interior design and settings are very spacious and very suitable for both a group of friends and a couple.

Good food for a great price. Very nice staff. Pizza was solid. Wings were tasty. Garlic bread was alright but not up to the rave reviews on this site. Very good value.

A cute little Italian restaurant located in the middle of Berea College. It's convenient for students to come here to grab a quick meal. I ordered a HUGE sub. I couldn't finish it, and I usually could finish a sub at Subway or Penn Station easily. Their portions will definitely fill you up. The interior is very homely, with a lot of wood furnishing. It's a little warm in there but it could be due to the ovens baking all that pizza.

Stopped here on our way through KY. Food was surprisingly good for a random pick. I had the baked spaghetti which came with garlic bread. It was good, but a bit too much food. My boyfriend is vegan and he had the vegetarian sub which he thought was very good.

It might not be the best Italian I've ever had, but it sure is good! Papa Leno's has a warm atmosphere and filling portion sizes. When ordering on a "poor college student's" budget, the menu is 100% approachable. Its a great place to sit down with friends and share a meal. The atmosphere caters to socialization and a full tummy. (And the $1 chocolate chip cookies are a great purchase)

Papa Leno's Restaurant is one of the famous Restaurants in Berea, KY. It is a nice and cozy place to chat and eat out with friends. Its location and popularity are the main foundations of its existence. Being a student in Berea College, I have been to Papa Leno's almost four to five times now. It is always pleasure to see how the workers are cooperative with good approach. Most of all it is a good place to have conversation with friends. I remember I ordered Veggie Sandwich one day and Lasagna in one of my second visits. The sandwich tasted yummy, I have never tried like that before. Lasagna was well prepared with good smell and taste. When I want to dine my guests Papa Leno's is my first choice because they serve good food, excellent customer service, neat place with fair price. Good deal. Visit Papa Leno's and evaluate it for yourself. Reviewed by:- Luwam Okbazion

I went here for lunch and for dinner. Lunch was good, had the chicken parm. It comes with a large chunk of garlic bread... Very buttery and good. The pizza is great too. Plenty of toppings and the crust is chewy and delicious. They need to update their website though. Prices are a lot higher than what it says. I don't know the area very well, but here they charge a "special" tax on top of the sales tax. It's about 3% on top of the sales tax. A little ridiculous. But the food is good. If your in town or staying at the Boone Tavern, it's just a couple steps away. Worth the very short walk.

This is easily the best restaurant in Berea. I eat lunch there at least twice a month. They have the best meatballs ever. The chicken parmesan is insanely good as well. And the hot, garlic butter covered individual loaves of bread are the deal. I also live close and have a pizza delivered once in a while and they never fail.

When I first walked into Papaleno's I was confused. I went and sat down at a table like I would any other establishment. It wasn't until sitting and waiting for 30 minutes until I realized that I had to wait in line up front to place my order. You can imagine my frustrations. When I took a look at the menu it was organized, neatly and was very eye-catching. The prices are great for the meal options in comparison to most Italian restaurants I have visited. As I waited for my food I realized how crowded the space was around the drink machine and in the bathrooms. Of course now I have seen the renovated restaurant which has improved the crowded space some, but not fully. I then waited for around 15 minutes for my food which didn't bother me because the smell was so tantalizing. Once I received my chicken Parmesan, and began to dig in my stomach was thanking me. The food was absolutely wonderful. The garlic bread was a little too buttery for my taste, but if you like butter you will love it. I couldn't have been happier with the food. If you are a patient person willing to wait on yourself at the beginning then this place is for you. The only problem I had was lack of clarity and understanding and space. I constantly had to say excuse me pardon me the whole time.

A rightfully beloved spot for families and college students. Comfortable atmosphere and certainly the best pizza in Berea. Good options for vegetarians. Downsides: In the winter, you experience a cold blast every time someone walks in the front door, which is about every two minutes. The management seems to believe that bread is best served swimming in hot butter (not true). (And just about everything they serve would be well-matched with a pitcher of beer or a carafe of red wine -- but that's not their fault. Vote wet!)

Papa leno's is an excellent Italian restaurant in Berea that has also proved mastery of the art of pizza making , also popular for its tasty garlic bread sticks that accompany every choice on the menu. The most revered pizza choice is the mountaineer which has a variety of toppings for your taste. And if you are fun of pasta and spaghetti, the place to be is still papa lenos. I also love their chicken grilled sandwich with butter milk sauce -grab that for lunch

As a college student, Papaleno's was the next best thing to a home cooked meal. The warm, welcoming environment lent itself as the family dinning room for hosts of hungry college students who needed a break from Berea College's foodservice. The large portioned Italian meals were always served piping hot and fresh, as was the buzzing student life. And just like home--we'd have to be mindful of what was said, and done, at the dinner table. Parental-eyes, in the form of college professors, weren't as distracted as you'd hope they'd be...

Papa Leno's is literally tucked away across the street from the Berea College Campus. My daughter, a freshman at Berea, has spoken well of it often. On what was my first visit there, she recommended it over the famous (and 1/2 block distant) Boone Tavern. Nowhere near as formal, nor as expensive, it would seem that Papa Leno's attracts a younger and more local crowd. When you enter, you order. Not at a counter, per se, but at the register. Even though it was the Saturday before Easter and the campus was almost totally empty, Papa Leno's was almost completely full. The crowd was a mix of college age students, local families, and a couple of tables with young women dressed up for their prom from a nearby town. The atmosphere is comfortable and casual, and the smell of garlic and pizza strikes you before you even step inside. My daughter ordered the Apple Tuna Stuffed Tomato salad, and I went with the Portabella Mushroom and Provolone Sandwich (1/2 order). You seat yourself, and await your food, which is delivered to your table. Drinks are self-serve, and there is a reasonable selection of Pepsi products and tea. There is no alcohol anywhere in Berea, as Berea sits in a dry county. This is true even at the apparently inappropriately named Boone "Tavern". The salad came with a single huge piece of Garlic Bread. It looked like a giant slice of Focaccia: soft, dense, and warm inside; browned, crusty and chewy on the outside. The top was brushed with a generous swab of very garlicky Garlic Butter, with plenty more seeping out and onto the bottom of the plate. It was absolutely delicious, with plenty of butter on the bottom of the plate for "soppin'". The salad was more than generous, and came with a whole large tomato that was more sliced and partially dissected with the Tuna on top, than hollowed out and stuffed. There was an abundance of veggies in amongst the greens. I enjoyed the Portabella and Provolone sandwich very much. The marinated mushroom cap was well cooked and came with chips. Holding it all together was also Focaccia type crusty bread; equally warm and wonderful as the aforementioned slab of garlic bread. The cheese was nicely melted and the toppings seemed fresh. It was not a large sandwich (3 to 4 inches), but it was a flavorful one. There was a nice contrast between the crunchy, toasted bun and the soft portabella inside. We found the staff to be friendly and efficient, the pace to be busy but not frantic. Papa Leno's is what one would expect in a college town - fast, friendly and affordable. I would most certainly come back.

I have eaten here many times throughout my life and can say that I have always been satisfied with my meals here. There is a warm environment, and tasty food (I highly recommend their pizzas or lasagna). I would say this is definitely my favorite place to eat in Berea, and if I'm going to spend my limited funds (I'm a Berea College student), at a sit down restaurant, then this is where I go.

This restaurant is a nice place to sit, bring friends, and relax while you eat a meal. Their prices are very reasonable and their home-made bread is delicious. I really like their grilled chicken salad with balsamic dressing. They are prompt on service and have a clean atmosphere. You definitely have to eat here if you happen to be in the Berea College area.

I've eaten here too many times to count (I'm a local student) and I have loved it every time. The atmosphere is very laid back and friendly with very hospitable and patient staff. Though I don't like pizza myself, the restaurant is well known for delicious pizza. However, I feel the pastas are truly down played because they are amazing. The spaghetti (either with meatballs or meat sauce) is zesty and delicious but my personal favorite is the fettuccini Alfredo. Whether plain, with chicken, or with shrimp, it's always delicious with creamy, tasty sauce. The bread is a bit too greasy for me, but. many people rave about it and my roommate once said she wishes she could live off of it. Papaleno's is definitely worth a try if you're in Berea for a visit.

Their Vegetarian pizza is amazing! It was my first time and I was not sure what to expect, it was truly delicious! The thickness was just right, the veggies were fresh and crispy, while the crust was just rightly cooked. Yummy all the way! Can't wait for my next visit and order :)

If you come to Berea, you simply cannot miss Papaleno's. Located in the College Square in the heart of the College, and with prime restaurant hours, Papaleno's attracts countless customers. The food is really commendable - fresh and great taste. I recommend the BBQ Chicken Pizza and Chicken Alfredo. For desserts, they have different options every week, but the Chocolate Brownies are a must try! All in all, one of the best things that happened to Berea.

There's no place like home. Once you step into Papaleno's you are immersed in the scent of fresh hand-tossed pizza made in an oven you can see from the front door. Everything is delicious-not good-delicious.

So amazing! This was my first date place with my wife and the food is amazing! It is a must place in Berea.

Papaleno's is ok. They have pretty good pizza, and the big slice is nice. Sometimes the service and food is inconsistent. Usually the food is cooked well, but I've gotten really watery pasta and undercooked food a few times. The service is usually sort of slow, but not terrible. It's nice to have a pizza/pasta restaurant so close to campus, and most of my experiences have been nice.

This place sucks, overpriced, weird atmosphere, food sucks. Their ingredients are oldish tasting and I swear if their sauce doesn't come from a can, a can would be a step up. The curtains are ugly ( and they are everywhere) and the atmosphere is "tasteless bourgeois" The two times I have eaten here I left with a sick feeling in my stomach, and it wasn't because I stuffed my face, as I have been known to do. One of the worst pizza joints I have ever been to, almost as bad as Mario's. *Additionally...Why would one even attempt to do a full menu Italian restaurant in a place where you can't even serve wine?

Pizza

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.

Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.

Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
