It was the chicken and waffles that drew me in. It was their signature item, and not something you expect to find in a diner. I mean, they've always had the ingredients, I guess, but when I say "chicken and waffles," the first image to pop into your mind probably isn't a diner. Though I think the 'diner' moniker is probably stretched a little thin, too: Brint's is a diner. Maybe even King's X. There's no counter service here - it's just a generic Family Restaurant. But one that's known for it's chicken and waffles! Except, as I was dismayed to find when showing up and looking at the menu, it's chicken strips, not an actual piece of fried chicken. The distinction doesn't appear significant at first, but when you consider the actual art involved in frying whole pieces of chicken compared to dumping a few pieces of chicken breast into a deep fryer for ten minutes, it's a letdown. To their benefit, though, I'm sure the waffle would have been fine. So I was left stuck searching for something else to sum up Solo's. Going over the entirely too large and expansive menu, I gravitated to the same sort of safehaven that's gotten me through menus like this in the past: the burgers. Right there at the top of the section, highlighted to show as a specialty of the place, was the tortilla burger. Here's a description of that tortilla burger: "A 1/3 pound of Angus beef grilled and smothered with red chili and cheese, wrapped in a 12-inch flour tortilla and topped with a classic salad of red chili, lettuce, tomato, black olives, sour cream and guacamole." Once again, I ask you to picture what this might look like in your mind. Did you picture a burrito? Me neither, but that's what I received. A burrito covered in a light film of cheap enchilada sauce. The beef had some Mexican seasonings, and the 'chili' wasn't applied to the beef before it was wrapped in the tortilla as per the description, but the 'salad' (lettuce) was nicely applied, in fact, the whole plate looked nice. Taste was about what you would expect from ordering a burrito in a family restaurant - placating and unoffensive. My seasoned fries - which now seemed silly given their pairing with a burrito - were frozen, but I don't mind that type of frozen fry so long as they're well-cooked. When I entered the restaurant the server was very nice and apologetic about how busy things were that evening. The room was less than 1/3 full, but there were only two servers, and maybe two cooks, and I think they were doing everything, to include bussing tables. So service was slow, and they were nice about it, though I wonder how much traffic they must normally get to consider this "busy". Between the "diner", the "chicken and waffles", and the "burger", I felt a little duped, and tired of applying air quotes. I realized as I was making my way through my faux-burger that I expected too much out of Solo's. This isn't a diamond in the rough at all; it's a hotel restaurant that serves as a meeting point for those too lazy to leave their hotel room. I actually felt a little sad, sitting in that mostly-empty restaurant waiting too long for my check as the people around me were talking about things other than the food, and already making plans to visit other places. Me? I wasn't going to waste time planning.

The service is terrible and the food worse. The Pasta Alfredo was basically Alfredo-flavored jello. The steak was overcooked, flavorless and 1/3 fat. It took half an hour after we placed the order for them to tell us they were out of baked potatoes.

AMBIANCE & DECOR: Wichita's own aviation themed diner! (Wichita is the "air capital of the world" if you didn't already know.) I especially admire the airplane models and wall art; they're very unostentatious. Plus kids get a free airplane thrower. I also think the black and red color scheme is a nice touch. Solo's Diner is conveniently located near the airport and next to Best Western, it's a good stop for out-of-towners. The place was pretty empty when I went, it doesn't seem like a place that gets too busy, that wins me over a Denny's/IHOP crowd any day. SERVICE: Excellent! When I went it wasn't busy, but regardless, the waiters were all very attentive and helpful; they came by multiple times to make sure everything was alright. FOOD: Chicken and Waffles! Pros: 3 pieces of moist, crunchy white meat on top of a fat, fluffy waffle. Cons: The chicken needs flavor. They had ketchup and tabasco at the table so that helped, but I would've preferred some Popeye's spicy chicken. Their seasoned fries were delicious; thick-cut but still crunchy and seasoned all around. The rest of the menu is pretty standard and reasonably priced given the awesome portions. OVERALL: The food is your standard diner fare but it wins over other restaurant chains because the food is of better quality and who doesn't love a themed diner?

We went to Solo's on April 28, 2014, for lunch at 11:00. We were the only people in the restaurant. We were seated and the waitress took our drink orders. We received our drinks and placed our food orders. I ordered a California burger and onion rings. The California burger had guacamole as one of the toppings. After waiting a bit longer than we thought was appropriate, the food for my dining companions arrived. The waitress told me that my guacamole was being made fresh and my burger would be out soon. After waiting until my dining companions were almost done with their food, my food still had not arrived. I got up from my seat at the table, went to find our waitress to find out how much longer it would be for my burger. She told me that the guacamole was being made by the cook and he was the only one doing the cooking. I remarked that guacamole shouldn't take that long to make and they weren't that busy that there should be that much of a problem. I told the waitress that my dining companions were finished and I wanted my food boxed up to go and the cost of my meal taken off the bill. The waitress did bring the burger out in a to go box, and the price of my meal was not on the bill. We also didn't get our drinks refilled and we had to get three different ketchup bottles off three different tables before we found one that was full enough to use. I don't think we will return.

The adjoining hotel is ok if you're passing thru with the family (like we were), but I really need to recommend against Solo's for dinner.

Very poor service. The food was not good at all. Very disappointed. I got the fried cod it was over done and soaked with grease. I would give it a thumbs down.
