But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

We love the family atmosphere at Felipe's and go on a regular basis. The menu is varied, and we have all found favorite dishes. Their fajitas are very good, as well as their steak nachos. While not particularly "authentic" I really like the Mexican pizza. They are well known for their bar, as well, and have some really fun, creative drinks if you are in the mood.

Terrible... Everything!! Lets start with the waitress; Completely oblivious to requests from me or my parents. Aptitude and attitude seemed to be about even... as in sorely lacking. Requested, several times more than one salsa, or at least one that was more than half filled if she wasn't able to figure out how to deliver more than 1 salsa at a time on her tray. Had to flag down and request every "normal" waitstaff attention item, i.e. drink refills, additional salsa/chips, the check, etc. As I expected, one half of my food was delivered to me. My parents... were left staring at me for 7 minutes. I know because I was texting my out of town wife about the miserable experience so far. We finally had to flag down another waitress, who by the way wasn't any better... by a long shot, to see where the rest of our food was. Another extended period passed before one plate at a time was delivered. Apparently, the cook and waitress could only mentally manage one order at a time, I guess. On to the food... or whatever that was. News flash: pork tamales are supposed to have pork in them. Seems pretty obvious, but what can you do?! Otherwise, it's a mass of gooey corn meal. Which was not what I ordered, BTW... not that anyone cared, one way or the other. The refried beans are puréed bean soup, the color of cement. Cement would probably taste better... with better consistency. And the "cheese" they top everything with... Government issue?!? Flavorless, weird consistency, probably a "food product" as opposed to actual cheese because that would cost a nickel more. If you want to try a Felipe's where there seems to be some care toward the food and customers; visit the one on Harry, just east of Webb. If you want a sour experience, a poor use of money, and frustration with a side of upset stomach, give this dump a shot.

Felipe's is the place to go if you're in the mood for a giant bowl of booze. If what you want is good mexican food, go elsewhere. The food did the job to sate my hunger, but was nothing to write home about. The queso is pretty good, but not really any better than anywhere else.

Consider the source here; I spent half my life in Texas and have had decades of superb Tex-Mex, lots of good Mexican meals in California, where I live now, and very nice examples of the New Mexico variety as well. The meal I had at Felipe's stands out as absolutely the worst Mexican food I've eaten in my life. Taco Bell is far superior. There could have been other factors as well: we were in a very large party, and the wait staff did a superb job under very trying conditions. I can't fault the service one bit. But trying to deliver so many meals in a short amount of time means that some plates are going to sit in the kitchen for a while, and that may have been part of the problem. I got the Felipe Deluxe dinner, which had a beef taco (the meat was gray and the shell had been soaked in the liquid runoff from the other parts of the meal, so I couldn't pick it up and had to eat it with a fork), a cheese enchilada (tasted like a slab of Velveeta in a soggy wrapper) and, on a separate plate, a tamal with chili, which distinguished itself as tasting no worse than a tamal from my local gas station food mart. My girlfriend got the carnitas, which she said were very dry and almost inedible. The couple across the table from us ordered vodka tonics and they couldn't taste the vodka, so they each ordered another shot to add to their drinks. I think the waitress felt embarrassed that the drinks were so watered down; she didn't charge them for the two extra shots. I would say that if you haven't had excellent Mexican food somewhere where there's a significant Hispanic population, you might think the food here was good. But if you've been raised on great Mexican food, I predict that you'll be horribly disappointed here. At least it's not very expensive and the atmosphere and interior decor are fine.

I've been going to Felipe's since I was a child. It's locally owned (by a guy named Felipe!), and it's expanded significantly over the last few decades. The interior (of the Woodlawn location) is spacious and well-kept, nice enough for a date. The service has always been courteous and attentive. But I'd come here just for the food. When I went earlier this month, they had these terrific enchiladas stuffed with spinach and ricotta. Personally, I think their chips are something special. I also really enjoy their tacos and carnitas. And they offer appealing egg dishes, like the huevos rancheros I've yet to try. The variety is great. Unfortunately, I wouldn't recommend the drinks. My party shared a Flaming Cazuela for fun, but it just tasted like 50 ounces of sour mix. For $11, I expected more out of a flaming drink. Everything at the bar was quite overpriced and their specials didn't do much to help. The food, however, is worth a try. Even at $$, it's a great place for sit-down Mexican food.

My family and I dine at Felipes frequently, it's definitely a crowd pleaser!! Friendly staff, super quick service & reasonable prices. I always order the 'jumbo burrito - pork" ($8.99). Their pork verde is killer!!! This large burrito is filled w/meat and beans (they don't mess around w/much veggies on this dish) BUT what makes this dish is the bean&cheese sauce smothered on top -- perfect for dipping! I can never finish the whole thing but never share the entree bc I love the leftovers! I took away one star bc their regular 'mild' salsa is horrible (tastes that cilantro-y marinera), their 'hot' sauce is mediocre at best - all fire & no flavor. So I just stick to the yummy sauce from my entree for dipping!

The menu has a large selection I've tried about everything once. My favorite is the compo 1 and 2. Warm chips and the best salsa in the United States.

My family and I had been in the car driving for 11 hours all day from Texas. When we finally got to Wichita, we were CRAVING some Mexican (we're from Houston so we basically always crave Mexican food, haah!). We picked Felipe's because it was the first Mexican restaurant we saw. As we walked in and saw their hours, we were so glad that it wasn't a Monday because they would have been closed! There was no wait and wasn't very crowded...but we didn't really expect it to be since it was 7:30 on a Tuesday. The menu was absolutely HUGE! It was kind of overwhelming because there was SO much to choose from! Everything sounded so delicous. I asked our waiter (who was very pleasant) what his favorite was. He recommended the Street Quesadillas, so that it was I got! (I don't think I could have decided for myself because of all the options. The chips and salsa were so addiciting! We couldn't stop eating them! As for the meal, I would consider it to have been average...nothing special. For the price you pay, you do get a good portion, but there was just a lack of flavor (well, for what i'm used to). It wasn't the worst...but definitely not the best. Bottom line, Kansas "Mexican" is nothing like Texas'.

Their special Cazuela cocktail bowls are amazing! That 50 oz. tequila and other mix into this clay pot of ice and sliced fresh fruit all blended together just perfect! To add even more excitement, they even torched up a lemon peel and was lit blue while floating inside the alcohol still. The flavors came together so well and had a wonderful citrus bite. The drink itself is light tasting and isn't strong.. But a another bowl would buzz a person up! I'd def come back for another! These are bomb! Wish we had these back home in the Bay Area!

Felipes is hands down the best restaurant in Wichita. We go at least once a week. My family always has a good time! The food is the best Mexican in the city. Everything on the menu is #1. The atmosphere is also great. It's just a good time!

I've had Mexican food in Kansas and have not been impressed, but I really enjoyed this restaurant. The homemade tamales are huge and delicious. I had the homemade corn tortillas were delicious and I had them with the shredded pork. The green sauce that I normally don't try was delicious on my tacos. Adding lime to the tacos really gave it an extra kick. I'll definitely go back and try this again.

First off, when I'm dying, I want my last meal to be a "Pancho Villa", Miguel style with the 2 eggs! Amigos, I've eaten a lot of Mexican food in my life - in fact, I think my momma should have been Mexican...Oh well, can't change the genes - but this is hand down one of my top 3 go to restaurants for when I need some real food! The Lujano family works hard to make you feel like a family member. The food is somewhat varied for different flavors - be sure to ask for a recommendation! Don't just order a combo plate and expect to get the 5 Star House Specialty recipe! Try the chile verde - perfected by Papa Roberto and his boys or a specialty item on the menu. Visit with the owners and then review the meal. Never have I left "wanting more"! Ambitious, happy, tasteful and reasonably priced! Multiple salsas, dips and desserts too. Catering option are great too... They do a great job and the appeal to everyone is positive. Gracias Felipe's - PS: Family owned, the 21st & Woodlawn restaurant is my favorite. Ask also about their special imported Tequila! Very flavorful. Hand selected and made especially for the restaurant. Wow, that's class.

Best Mexican food on planet earth. Chips and Salsa are outstanding. Service is generally very good. Prices are fair enough. The family that owns Felipes are always around to greet and shoot the breeze. Probably the best kept secret of Felipes is the 100+ brands of tequila they have available for you to try. With their guidance I've become quite the Tequila connoisseur and very much of a tequila snob lol.

I thought the food was good. They had two salsa choices, then the waiter brought out two more choices. The waiter brought marinated fried jalapeños. All of it was good. The only suggestion would be to have chunkier salsa, but it had a good flavor. My expectation was met, I heard they have a huge flaming drink there. It is 10 bucks and you will probably not need a refill. It is called the flaming cazuela. I also had the diamond margarita. On the back of the menu the rim had black salt and looked cool, but they served it with white salt. It is made with their blended tequila and they had a shot of the tequila on the side. I was skeptical when the waiter said it was a special tequila blended just for them but the shot was very sweet and smooth. Excellent and knowledgeable service. I heard their best dishes or signature dishes are on the back of the menu. I ordered the burrito diablo, which had a great flavor. Top it off the prices are reasonable.

This is hands-down my favorite Mexican restaurant in town! The chicken chimichanga (smothered in queso, of course) is so good I might request if as my last meal if I ever find myself on death row. There are other great selections too that I would highly recommend. The staff is friendly but a tad inattentive. I think if they re-trained the employees there on proper customer service, I'd give this place 5 stars. That's really only the bad thing I have to say about the place. The prices are about on par with Carlos O'Kelly's, but the food is far superior. I also like the quiet atmosphere this place has along with the semi-dim lighting to kind of make the place a bit more intimate than your average restaurant. I find it relaxing, and it allows me to enjoy my meal even more. This will remain my number one option to satisfy a craving for good Mexican food.

Service was good but taco meat and shredded cheese they put into tacos has no flavor at all. Rice and beans are also lacking in the flavor department. Would I recommend this place? No, I wouldn't.

Even though there are 4 Felipe's restaurants in the area, the gift cards they sell can only be used at the restaurant where they were purchased. We found this out the hard way. We should have left the carryout order but paid for it anyway (luckily I had a credit card on me). Be forewarned...they don't care if you are inconvenienced they only do what is easiest for themselves.

Canned tomatoes are a trusty pantry staple in Brad S.'s cupboard. They're great in cooked applications, but they don't taste that great in raw applications. They're also not good when you process them, add too much dried basil, and call it a salsa. Felipe's has been around for forty years, and is obviously a family business, as evidenced by the ten year old child acting as a runner. Still, I was pretty disappointed with the Mexican Special (aka "especialidad de la casa") - chile verde with pork, served alongside beans rice, guacamole, and tortillas. The pork and chile was nice enough, but the tortillas gummy, boring rice, and tasteless beans topped with neon yellow cheese. I had no problems with the guacamole - too many places do little more than mash up an avocado, but there was a nice ratio of chopped tomato and onion in there to make me forget to ask why they felt the need to include it in this dish. I was uniformly unimpressed with my meal, but I noticed Felipe's had a pretty nice tequila selection. Maybe that's the key to enjoying the food.
