Inexpensive Mexican food served fast and hot. Plenty of tasty treats on the menu, I get something new every time and it does not disappoint. Chips and salsa served before every meal with quick and attentive service. So good that Mosquito Coast star, Harrison Ford, even visits on occassion.

Connies is the oldest Mexican Restaurant in Wichita, with slightly better than hole-in-the-wall ambiance, and the place where Harrison Ford ate when he visited Wichita to have his private plane serviced in Jan 2007. Homemade chips with mild salsa (Mexican oregano variety flavor - not my favorite) and hot salsas are served in refill containers with one bowl each. The hot salsa is fantastic, literally some of the best salsa I've ever had. I know, in Wichita? I frequently have to ask for a second bottle of hot salsa and another basket of chips. As good as the salsa is I'm surprised that the queso is only a little better than Rico's variety - what's up with that? The cheese enchiladas are served in corn tortillas which is unusual in Wichita (most other restaurants serve them in flour tortillas which is just wrong) with meat chili sauce and covered with cheddar cheese - oh yes, these are quite good. Hard shell Tacos are served in typical Wichita-style fried flour tortillas (also just wrong - the rest of the world serves hard shell tacos in corn tortilla shells). The rice is standard but good and the beans are like refried beans that have not been smashed, or maybe like drained frijoles. I also enjoy their chili verde (they call it the 3-color plate because the plate is divided into thirds - chili verde on one third of the plate, rice on another third, and beans on the final third) served with tortillas. I think all their food is pretty good, although I would probably think anything was great if eaten with their hot salsa and chips.

Love the King sized burrito. I have liked everything I have ever ordered, and the staff is amazing. Best of everything in Wichita!!

It should have been a warning that during my busy Saturday lunchtime visit to this restaurant in the largest Hispanic neighborhood in the city there were absolutely no Hispanic people that weren't employees. It should have also been a warning that the majority of the menu was based around ground beef. I don't need to go to a restaurant and pay somebody for the first and easiest form of meat that people learn to cook. So it came down to choosing between a burrito with the pork or the one with their chorizo. I couldn't imagine eating a giant burrito filled with proper chorizo, so I went for the pork. Not that I ate the entire giant burrito in this case either, as the pork bites had been left sitting for too long, resulting in flavors running the gamut from 'dry' to 'hideously dry'. It was covered in a beef chili that was thin, greasy, and lacking in meat. I liked the salsas. I severely doubt the Connie's is under any delusions that they are creating authentic Mexican cooking, as you can walk to the end of the block, order from one of the taco trucks stationed in the Nomar Plaza and have a Mexican food experience that's infinitely better in all objective aspects of cooking. There are plenty of people who do like what Connie's is creating, but good lord I am not one of them.

The king size burrito is delicious with cheese and chile topping. The homemade salsas are very good. Ambience is 1960's style nothing fancy but there's no better Mexican food in Wichita anywhere.

If you eat here, be sure to order the "All Meat Burrito, Deluxe". It's the best item on their menu and the only thing I ever get (some of the other menu items suck to be quite honest). But you can't go wrong with the All Meat Burrito or the "King Size Burrito" (king size is the same as the all meat but adding pinto beans). Order it, thank me later. ;)

Recommended to us by my husband's boss -- so we tried it. They brought two types of salsa -- we liked the hotter version. The food looked better than it tasted. The place was packed. The server was efficient but not overly friendly. Just an 'OK' experience.

Bad service. Bland food. Got the chips and queso. Queso looked like velveeta and had to pay extra for chips. Always hear how this is a Wichita favorite but we would not go a second time.

Very Good! :)The #crispy #tacos are amazing! The beans have the best flavor. When I first get my order, I put one bean in my mouth and slowly eat it. I do this to #taste the mouth watering flavors. Connie is a talented cook. I bet her house is always packed at the holidays. YUMMY :)

The hot salsa was great and greatly helped the 3 "steak" tacos, oh wait, they only had ground beef. Went with the chicken and good, especially with the added salsa but food did not live up to the great look. Definitely take over the bell but thinking there are some improved options around.

I grew up in Wichita but never have been to Connie's. A friend took me there. He got the deluxe burrito plate...my goodness...his plate took up easily half the table...lots of food. I got the Monterey special with beef. Both of us had huge plates of food...so much so that I had to fork carefully so as not to spill food on the table as I served myself. The salsas were great. One mild which he liked, and one fairly hot which I liked. I used up the entire container of the hot sauce with my chips and meal. We both took home carry-out trays...him more than me. There were two meals worth of food delivered to us. Food tastes great and plenty of it. We plan to go again.

Good food, good atmosphere. Pretty authentic mexican with a hint of American mixed in.

Some people swear by Connie's. While I enjoyed my meal, I'm spoiled and have Mexican friends and will take their cooking over Connie's any day! It's in a strange location. Connie's is on north Broadway. There's really not much else up there. But it always seems to be super busy! The crowd is not what you'd expect. With it being so far away from downtown or other offices, there sure are a lot of suits there! I had the chorizo and eggs. My not-so-cultured dining companion couldn't stop looking at it and commenting on how gross it looked as I chowed down. I finally forced him to eat a bite and he changed his mind. Served with plenty of sauce and tortillas, it pretty tasty, but just a tad too heavy on the chorizo for me. The service was quick but not overly friendly. Definitely a bit of a hole in the wall, but worth a visit, if only to see what people are talking about!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
