Whenever I visit Wichita, Angela's Cafe is first on my list. I've been eating there for over 25 years. All locations are fine. The service is ok, but the food is fantastic. I almost always get the smothered burrito dinner. It is out of this world. If you've never been, it's worth a try.

I stopped in today for the first time. Very small and the interior is quite plain. But the service and the food made me not notice. The waitress anticipated everything...even down to whether I wanted a lemon slice in my water (I never do) and she brought extra napkins (I usually have to ask for them since spicy food makes my nose run). Rather than bring me both hot and mild salsa she asked. I said hot and it is among the best I've had...hot but not oppressive...just right. I ordered the beef fajitas and after bringing a generous plate of guacamole, sour cream, pico, beans and rice along with some warm tortillas, she brought the fajitas. I could hear them sizzling on the cast iron serving skillet as she came from the kitchen. The food was delicious. The waitress kept my glass full, asked me if wanted more tortillas and volunteered to bring a carry-out box since it was obvious I had more food than I was going to eat at one sitting. This isn't a true 5-star restaurant by, say, New York City standards. But Angela's is among the best at what they do, therefore the 5 stars.

Nice little hometown place. Good was fresh and pretty good. Good service Downsides: we were one of 2 tables and waited a long time for our food- even longer for the fajitas.

Wonderful food!!! Reasonable prices and service was friendly. The only thing bummed about is space. It's small but warm. I would go back for sure. :)

I have only eaten here once and just got something small to try it because I had heard how good it was. I noticed this location just a few blocks from my office. I ordered a chicken and bean burrito and a tamale-wet. I ordered the tamale "hot" and it was! Both items were very good.. the burrito was excellent!! Mmmm, could have eaten a couple more! Can't wait to stop there again! I hear it is VERY busy at lunch time and it is a very small place. Two booths and a few tables. Mostly street parking. There are a couple of spaces in a tiny parking area next to the restaurant. 4/11/08: I have since tried the E Kellogg location @ Kellogg & about Greenwich. All I can say is a BIG YUMMMMMMMMMMMMM!! I ordered a bunch of stuff so we could try it. Chips & salsa, I prefer their mild salsa over the hot. The mild had more flavor. The chicken flauta dinner was great. It came with rice & beans. I had another Chicken & Bean Burrito, delicious again. A Bean & Rice Burrito was delicious and we tried the Beef Taco. The taco was a flour shell, fried there. It looked greasy but surprisingly didn't taste that way! And no... this wasn't eaten all at once!! It lasted about 2 days and was shared by 2! I also stopped at the downtown location again on Central. This time I ordered a Chicken Sancho combo w/ rice & beans. Also some Guacamole. Very good!!

Angela's cafe has by far the best burrito's I've ever eaten. It's one of Wichita's best kept secrets. My husband and I ate there two times for lunch in the four times we were in Wichita because we were so impressed with the quality of food and the great prices. The hot sauce is more like liquid lava and the chili relleno burrito with medium hot sauce is my favorite thing to order. If you go during lunch you might be able to grab a table or wait a few minutes for service, but it is well worth it!

How many times have I left Old Town in the evenings looking for somewhere to eat, before turning onto Central and driving past the tiny Angela's Cafe, only to find they were closed? A couple of dozen, by my estimation. Seeing as how I rarely come downtown during the afternoons, I was beginning to doubt it was still in business. But then, on a another Friday night where it's getting increasingly more difficult to find a new place to try, I was resigning myself to trying Sumo when I drove past Angela's and like a beacon of hope the fluorescent "Open" sign was illuminated! I didn't know when I would get another opportunity like this, so I did one of those 180-degree turns usually reserved for car chases in action movies and grabbed a booth. (Turns out, Angela's is only open until the odd hour of 7:30 during the week.) You only get one free order of chips and salsa. It didn't bother me, as the chips were fairly standard and the mild salsa was poor, consisting of nothing but tomatoes, it seemed. The spicy version was better, containing visible chunks of pickled jalapeno and a general overall impression that care was taken to make it taste good. I ordered a barbacoa burrito. It was a gut reaction, though more of the "I wanted to eat this" kind of gut reaction, not so much the "I think this is what will taste the best." Smothered? As if you have to ask. The burrito was fairly large, loaded with meat, and some tomatoes and refried beans came along for the ride. The meat was plenty tender and quite tasty for a Friday night, and the gravy which spanned the plate was gelatinous from the slowly-simmered pork and subsequently quite unctuous. I didn't know that the burrito didn't come with any sides, but given the price, I chalk it up to me not reading the menu very carefully. Given Old Town's reputation for not offering more than one good place for any type of cuisine, I would suggest that Angela's Cafe be the go-to place for Mexican cooking, but I'm sure there are still people who would prefer to drink frozen margaritas at Playa Azul instead. It's the neighborhood's tiny, dirt-cheap Mexican restaurant, and while it may not have the flare of those bigger places, I'll always consider places like Angela's to be the Mexican restaurant of choice.

The first time I went, I liked their spicey salsa and I thought their mild salsa had too much salt. Their tacos were also too salty, and the meat didn't have the flavor as some of these smaller authentic Mexican restaurants that I have been going to. What saved that visit was their tamale. It was awesome. The second time I went, both salsas were perfect including the mild. I had an aqua de horchata, which I enjoyed being the first time I ever drank that. The burrito I had was good, but again the meat was not as good as I had hoped. I like going to family owned and family ran restaurants. You get the best service from places like these, and this place was no exception. I did go during off peak hours both times, around 2pm. I have seen master bedrooms bigger than this place. So if you go during peak hours, you will probably need to bring a lot of patience.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
