Best Barbeque we've ever had! The only downsides where the limited hours they are open and how long we had to wait in line to get our food. But, oh was it worth it! The owner greeted everyone when opening and made sure to check on all the tables. We tried a little bit of everything and each thing was great. The turkey with spicy BBQ sauce was my favorite and the cheesy tators are to die for. Don't miss out and be sure to check this place out!

First priority if you want to eat here is get here EARLY. When I say early I mean before they open because you will stand in line waiting with 10-30 people even when u are early. The options are small but all are good. This place is only open for lunch and Friday dinner. We had a full slap of baby back ribs. The meat fell off the bone and had good flavor. Also had a brisket sandwich with 2 sides. The amount of brisket that you get is insane. The amount can easily make 2 sandwiches,..but from other sources that is what Lonnies hangs his hat on...portion and flavorful meats. The platters also comes with 2 pickle spears. We had cheesy taters and baked beans. Must get side is the cheesy taters. Again the portion size is huge. The beans were good, could taste the spices and all the home made goodness. I wasn't a fan of BBQ sauces. They offer a mild original and a hot. They had ok flavor however very runny..we are use to thick BBQ sauce that hangs on the meat. This sauce was more marinate type.

We've heard the legends about this place, and they are all TRUE. Yes, get there early for Friday dinner to be one of the first "seatings" in the door once they open. We got there 30 minutes ahead of time and that was perfect for us. Service is slow once the doors open, but worth the wait. We got 2 sets of ribs to share, a serving of the famous cheesy potatoes, and a few of the men got the "bowls". Our new friends in the waiting line always get the turkey...and after a sample, I can see why. Once you get inside, don't worry about saving seats. That doesn't work with the customer flow. There will be seats once you get your food. Order double and take some home for the weekend!!

I have been wanting to try this place for a while, but have a hard time being here when it is open (lunch M-F and dinner F). I was on vacation today, so I got a chance to eat lunch there. I arrived right about noon, and had to wait in line for about 15 minutes. I have a #1 combo, which is a sandwich, two sides and a drink for $11.95, I think. I chose brisket, cheesy potatoes and "cold" slaw. The brisket wasn't sliced. It was more chunked and shredded, and kept on the steam table with some liquid. Different than what I'm used to, but it had a great smoky flavor and was tender and juicy. I had the sandwich with some pickled jalapenos and their spicy sauce, which was runny, sweet & just barely spicy. It nicely complimented the meat. Fresh jalapenos would have been better, IMHO. The cheesy potatoes were tasty, and the cole slaw was fresh, creamy and delicious. Portions were huge! I had a hard time finishing the brisket, and ended up throwing a fair amount of the sides away. Great value and great food. I wouldn't go as far as saying it rates up there with Joe's Kansas City, Jack Stack, Boulevard BBQ, or Q39, but it was damn good bbq, and a nice find in Topeka.

We'd heard great things about this place and finally was able to make a visit. We arrived at about 6:15 on a Friday night and the line had probably 30 people in it. The line moved steadily but slowly. When we arrived at the counter by about 6:30 we were the lucky recipients of the last slab of ribs. And oh dear lord what ribs. I ate mine without any sauce. They fell off the bone and the rub made a beautiful tasty crust. We also got a side of the cheesy potato casserole....your typical good hash brown casserole you can find on any recipe site. We also had the baked bean - decent I guess (I can make better myself) but I didn't go there for the beans. Can't wait for visit #2!

If you plan to eat at Lonnie Q's, prepare for a wait! This place is absurdly popular and I've never been able to just pop in and quickly get food due to the lines. But that just means the place is good! Excellent meats (though I'm not a fan of the vinegar-based BBQ sauce) and the cheesy taters are THE BEST. I could JUST eat that and be happy. Nice space, though a little out of the way depending on where you're at. Definitely worth checking out if you're a big barbecue fan!

Great food and wonderful people highlight this restaurant. They are only open for 2 hours at lunch and 2 hours for dinner so plan your trip. The smoked turkey and beef brisket were out of sight. But then the sides were nothing to ignore either.

Absolutely delicious smoked & barbecued food!! The team at Lonnie Q's is extremely friendly, helpful and holy geez...do they know how to make some delicious food. The "cold slaw" is fresh, perfectly dressed and crispy. It's hands down the best slaw I've ever had. A plate with two sides runs me about $13 and it feeds me, my 5 & 6 year old AND I still leave with leftovers for lunch the next day. They're hours are limited. We went once right at 11 and it wasn't terribly packed. We went the second time at about 11:45 and the line was to the door! People clearly love this culinary gem. What a great find in Topeka! I will definitely make myself a regular.

Wow... What a hidden treasure!!! Really great BBQ & I'm not even a BBQ person. I've been to Oklahoma Joes in KC & this is as good if not better! Bonus: Lonnie is just an awesome dude. Hooked me up with some extra turkey to take home to my wife!!! (Brownie points were earned) On the downside: hard to find! I would've never known about it if it weren't for my friend Grant! And the hours... But I guess when you're that good you can make your own hours.

Locals told me about Lonnie Q's. I went the first day I was in Kansas on business and a girl met me outside stating that they were out of meat. I was bummed (but super happy that I didn't go all the way inside...that was really nice of them). So, I made sure I was there at 10:30 am the next day. Good thing I was. There was a line of people waiting. Boy was it worth it though. If I am back in KS for business again I am definitely hitting this place up!

Here's the deal folks. I know BBQ and Lon's got just about the best I've ever had. Not only is he a pit master but a very talented artist (he did ALL the murals) and a dang fine fellow. If you have a chance to go and don't your missing out. Seriously, this is good food at a fair price in a pleasant atmosphere.

Worth detouring to eat here! At the entrance of an RV park, and only open for two hours most days. Lonnie knows how to perfectly smoke meat! The Cup of Heaven is amazing and includes a sampling of turkey, pork, and brisket-all delicious-along with cheesy potatoes and beans, also very yummy. Excellent value and friendly service. The meat is "naked"--lightly seasoned with no sauce on it. Sauce is available but not needed because the flavor of the meat is so good. Truly a hidden gem!

Let me start by saying I am a native of the KC area. I love BBQ. It is a religion to me. Since moving to Topeka 30 years ago I have desperately sought edible BBQ. Most places here would not survive a month in KC. For that reason, I give Lonnie's an extra star. The portions are quite large and the price is very reasonable. I keep going to the Q cup which is brisket, pork and turkey served atop cheesy taters and baked beans. While Lonnie's would not crack the top 10 in KC. It would give a run. The ambience is wonderful classic rock in a very clean dining area. The down sides are their hours and their sauce. It is very difficult to make it there between 11-1 on weekdays. They are closed Saturday and Sunday. Their sauce is passable but not a Wow! Fortunately their meats are moist and tasty enough the sauce isn't needed. Finally, I'd like to see additional items on the menu such as burnt ends, sausage, and chicken. But regardless I will be back for my cup Q cup and hopefully get their ribs before they're sold out. My last trip I was 5 min too late.

Juicy tender pulled pork sandwich with a side of cheesy potatoes. Amazing! Hours are a bit odd, so get there early!!! Oh, and don't expect to go there on weekends, they are not open. Don't go late because they tend to run out of food... They are just that good!!! Wish we lived close by, we would be regulars!!!

At first I thought Google Maps screwed me over because of the sketchy location. But as soon as I saw the sign, I was in relief. I luckily got to the restaurant on time because there was already a line before opening time, I couldn't imagine how it would've been later in the afternoon. The menu at first didn't appeal to me due to the limited dishes but as soon as I saw the first customer with his first order, I drooled. The prices were very reasonable and even though they had a line, they had a steady flow. **Warning - you can't have more than 6 orders because of the waiting customers in line.** "World Famous" Cheesy Tots - I never had cheesy tots made like this but by far it was the best I've had yet. Their sandwich was a monster with a variety of their tasty meats and as a dip-o-holic i couldn't resist in drenching the meats with BBQ sauce (bad idea to clean freaks)

The meat and cheesy taters are awesome! I'd come back here again just for those. However, the BBQ sauce is not good. There are two types of homemade sauce. Trust me, go for the non homemade sauce also on the table.

Looking for some great BBQ outside of KC? Lonnie Q's is the place to go. Delicious sauce, great portions. Make sure to try the Cheesy Taters! So delicious.

Wow, delicious food friendly staff, awesome tag line. This place is worth a trip in itself. Ribs fall off the bone tender, brisket was juicy and tender, the smoked turkey was so yummy it was as succulent as a ham, the beans were fabulous and last but not least the cheesy taters omg best taters ever!!! World famous for a reason. Skip KC BBQ and go to this place and get some Lonnie-Q! Oh so good, so good

I now have a love/hate relationship with Lonnie's BBQ on the outskirts of Topeka Kansas approximately one mile south of I-70 not too far past the first toll booth entering Topeka. This all relates to the strangest hours of operation I've ever seen with a restaurant not operating out of a food truck. Let's preface this entire review with posting the stated hours of operation: Monday-Friday 11am to 1pm Friday open for dinner 5:30 to 7:30pm Saturday & Sunday......CLOSED! Don't ask because I'm yet to get a clear answer from anyone in the know. Most of the reviews rave and rant about Lonnies BBQ. Some have went so far as to claim Lonnies the best anywhere, including Kansas City. Um, not quite. I will say that any type of BBQ west of Wyandotte County in Kansas City is absolute garbage. Yes, this includes Lawrence, Topeka (besides Lonnies), Manhattan, Salina, Junction City, Hays, and all the way to Denver. Lonnie's menu is the smallest I've ever seen first hand. Literally 3 meats: Brisket, Pork, and Turkey. Pork ribs are served Thursday & Friday only. Sides: Cheesy Taters (basically cheesy hash brown type concoction), beans, and "cold slaw". There are "BBQ Bowls", which consist of three meats and a side placed inside a styrofoam bowl. No french fries, no regular slices of bread, no burnt ends, no ham, no sausage, and not many other traditional BBQ items. On the two occasions we visited, I have tried EVERY single menu item Lonnies offers. The combo plate is the best deal. Meat and 2 sides. Lonnie himself serves up the food and a young lady rings you up. Those are the only two employees I have seen. Lonnie runs a tight ship as I'm not surprised considering his hours of operation. Portions are decent and you will not leave hungry. Pickles and jalapeno peppers are offered with every item. The bun that Lonnies serves is quite unique. Hard to explain as it is quite dense and large. The bun alone settles in your stomach and quickly begin to fill you up. Prices are spot on and actually a decent deal. The meats are moist and tender. Brisket was a tad chewy but nothing major.Very good smoke flavor. Turkey is turkey and it was rather moist and tasty. The cold slaw was excellent. Very crunchy and light dressing. The beans were ok but I'm not a huge fan of vinegar based beans. The cheesy potatoes were different and very very good. Typical Coca Cola soda machine. No strawberry. Wish Lonnies had sweet tea but they do have unsweetened fresh brewed tea. Lines were long and consistent for the entire two hours. Moved at a good click and no complaints there. The building itself is beautiful and extremely clean. Yes, it's sit in a peculiar location. The building is at the entrance of an RV park and sits next door to a concrete contractor business. Everything is pristine and well maintained. I have a feeling Lonnie himself owns the land, RV Park, and construction business next door. This may explain why Lonnies BBQ is merely a stop-gap between the true money makers located on the property. Hey, I can't fault the guy too much. He appears to be a shrewd business man that loves BBQ and has taken his hobby to make a little cash on the side. Where would I rank Lonnies BBQ with the masterpieces of Kansas City BBQ?.............I would have to strongly consider putting Lonnies BBQ in the Top 10 of all KC BBQ joints. Heck, if he expanded his hours a little more, he may even crack the top 5-7. Lonnies way of doing things in Topeka works as most of these people have no idea what to compare Lonnies BBQ to. I'm telling you with 100% certainty, that folks in KC wouldn't stand for his hours of operation in that region. No way, no how. In the end, Lonnies BBQ offers a superb product and look forward to eating at Lonnies in the future.

We stopped at Lonnie Q's while passing through the Topeka area on a vacation. The BBQ was wonderful and the atmosphere was just as great! We tried brisket, turkey and ribs and they were all delicious. The meat melted in your mouth! Best BBQ we have eaten. We also sampled all the sides which were equally as wonderful. The owner made us feel like we were right at home. We would definitely recommend Lonnie Q's BBQ! We can't wait until we pass through again to stop for more wonderful BBQ!

A simple menu with motorcycle and guitar motif awaits you here. And if you get here during a busy day you will wait a few minutes to clear the queue. I had a combo plate with combo meat... pork and brisket. Both were chopped and keep moist in their juices before hitting the bun. Very tasty and medium smoke. Some decent pieces of bark scattered about. I would prefer just the slightest bit more seasoning. The sauces were okay... they had a regular and a hot (which the proprietor told me was regular plus cayenne pepper). The cole slaw was very good... course chopped and not watery. It could have used a touch of vinegar or spice for my taste, and I saved it with some pickled jalapenos. : ) The cheesy taters will destroy you. Rich and delicious. Again, adding some jalapenos sent them through the roof with flavor. Good place.

Just come! All the meats exceptional. LOTS OF FOOD for a very fair price. $10 will serve two good eaters. Note their hours, 11-1 M-F BUTT come early. Lonnie makes so much and when it is gone it is gone! Coke products. Plan on a LINE out the door after 12:15PM...not joking folks! Ribs on Thursday and Friday only. A bit hard to find first time but once you have you will be back. JUst watching the different folks come is fun too.

I got the cheesy potato and brisket. In the two weeks of many BBQ meals, Lonnie Q is the best. Also nice and clean atmosphere.

Cup-o-Heaven!!! I was told I had to try this place before I left Topeka and man was that good advice! As soon as I walked in If was greeted with a smile and friendly conversation by the manager/owner/chef whom, with only the help of one other person, was running the joint Kinda hard to find since its back almost in an RV park, but the food was top notch so worth the dig! I got the Q cup or the "cup-o-heaven" this consisted of potato casserole, baked beans, three different kinds of meat (and probably something else I don't remember) all piled high in an overflowing cup of joy! My meal was only 5 bucks and man was that money well spent! I will be coming back!

This place is great. Limited menu but here are the musts: You MUST get the cheezy taters. You MUST get the brisket. You MUST meet Lonnie. (He'll be there.) The ribs are top notch as is the pork. Portion sizes are huge, price is outstanding value. Get there early and note the hours of operation. When they run out of food (and they do later in the day), it's all done. Must eat place in Topeka.

This restaurant is only open a few hours a week but is well worth seeking out! We went to the Friday night dinner (5:30-7:30). The meats were all delicious (brisket, pork and turkey) as were the homemade sides. Lonnie, the owner, was making each plate and was very gracious. We seek out BBQ wherever we go and this is definitely a place we will visit again!!

A great place. You should eat here. No, seriously. Do it. The power of Meat compels you. Lonnie's should be on anyone's "best of" list for Topeka or the area. It's all good. Best things: the turkey is truly exceptional. Lyrically, magically exceptionally tasty and moist. Cheesy potatoes are an atomic, high-temperature, cheesy mess of wonderful. I'm not partial to Lonnie's homemade sauce - thin, vinegary with a hint of tamarind and lots of smoke - but its not bad and there's a more traditional store-bought sauce on the table as well. The hot version of the homemade sauce comes closer to being my thing. You don't really need that much sauce anyway. The beef is just fine but is the least interesting of the meat offerings. Get a Q-cup and do without the bun if you like. Super nice folks. Great, clean dining area. Great, clean bathroom. As mentioned in other reviews, crowded and hours limited to weekday lunch and Friday dinner. No weekends.

I've never had a bad experience here! Lonnie Q's BBQ is consistent and good! You can close your eyes and point to anything on the menu and you won't go wrong. Friendly service and a clean dining experience. Get there early though because they sell out fast for a reason.

Amazing BBQ! Juiciest turkey I've ever had and the cheesy potatoes are to die for! Only open for lunch but it's worth the stop if you can make it happen. The owners made us feel right at home! It's clear that they have pride in what they are doing. Stop by! You won't be disappointed! From Denver

If you want the best BBQ this is the place in Topeka! Their meat is delicious and their cheesy potatoes are ridiculous! Lonnie is a great guy and his slogan is the best! "We smoke it, and it's legal"! We had our Christmas dinner catered from him and everyone enjoyed it all! Thanks Lonnie! Well done!

Well, JUST found out about Lonnie Q's two days ago when I was browsing Yelp. I had today off, so we went with two of our friends. We all loved it. Got there about 11:30 right before the line got backed up and moved through pretty quick. I was expecting a small place since it was only open for two hours a day. But no, the atmosphere was open with probably 60 seats, was really clean and impressive. Even though the line was packed the entire time we were there, it seemed like most people got the food to go, and I always saw at least eight tables open. Lonnie was serving like everyone said. I told him that it was my first time there and that my mouth was watering the entire time I was in line, which it was because it smelled soooo good. He said that he hoped it was good. And it was. Duh. I had the brisket sandwich, beans and shared my wife's cheesy taters. I love baked beans, and those things were amazing. The meat was great and like everyone else says, those stupid cheesy taters were off the chart! Lonnie and the girl at the register were really nice and outgoing. I talked to Lonnie the entire time we were getting our food and he was great to talk with. I was going to give it four stars just because of the hours. I mean, this is amazing food, it should at least be open on the weekend some! But no, that's dumb of me. This place is well deserving of the five out of five stars, so I'm not going to dock it one just because Lonnie doesn't want to have it open more than that. It's his place, and his choice. Judging by the amount of people going through there, he isn't hurting by the hours he's chosen. So if you want the food, you're the one that's gonna fit it into your schedule... and you really need to fit it into your schedule. That was some great BBQ and a great place all around!

Some places may have awards and trophies for their barbecue, but the daily grind in the restaurant don't produce consistent results. Lonnie is different! He knows how to make it well and make it the same every time, year after year. Only a handful of different things on the menu, but he is a master of each! The secret to a good coleslaw? Add the wet stuff to the cabbage minutes before people eat it! What more ribs? He'll only cook as much as he can fit so it sells out in about an hour. Get there early, stand in line and enjoy visiting with people as you wait for the best ribs around!!

Had the brisket it was juicy and had a great flavor. Not a real fan of turkey but, Lonnie's was great. Keep up the good work.

Cup-o-Heaven is just as the name says. Cheesy taters, baked beans, and meat piled high in a bowl, how could you go wrong. The food here is great, the service has always been friendly and the place is always clean. My only "complaint" would be the house made bbq sauce and that is just a matter of personal taste. I think it has a cocoa flavor to it that I don't really enjoy. I like a spicier sauce. Great thing about the food is, I don't have to use any sauce because the flavor is so good without it!

  • Matt M.

Nothing is bad about this place. This is the BEST BBQ I've ever had. The cheesy potatoes were great, the meat was fantastic, the sauce was mind blowing, the portions were huge. I was full halfway through my meal, but I finished it because it was that good. I would eat here everyday if I didn't live 1000 miles away.

By far the best BBQ in Topeka! All I can say is you gotta try it for yourself!

  • Sarah B.

This is the best BBQ! We have had all the places in Topeka and even Gates in KC thi is by far the best. Lonnie is there serving himself and is very friendly- make sure to say its your first time and he will give you the run down. The building is very nice but if you get there too late parking is scarce- we usually try to be there by 11 if we go but if not most we have waited in line is 20 minutes and we would wait longer if we had to. Once you have BBQ here you absolutely will not go anywhere else. My husband and I are Topeka natives and found out about Lonnie's from YELP ourselves. My husband is a picky eater when it comes to good food and his words were " we will never eat BBQ anywhere else and it's worth the drive to get there". Can't say enough good things abou Lonnie's food, service, atmosphere and cleanliness!

Would be zero because we didn't get to eat here. Just to let everyone know that this is only open for lunch and Fri nite for dinner and even that is not dependable if he is catering.

Off the beaten path, but you will find them in a new, clean building. Beef is fantastic as are the cheesy potatoes and beans. Weird hours, so call before you go. Great little joint!

Found this hidden jewel on YELP while we're visiting family on a trip from Oregon. Hubby and I always like a good barbecue, and decided to take the advice of previous reviewers. SO GLAD WE DID! The owner was serving up the food like he didn't care about a profit! Generous portions! The folks around us were happy to be there and happy to stand in line--not the usual sight of people in line. Lonnie gave us a taste since we were first timers that could have been a whole meal in itself. The food was fresh, amazingly tasty, the service was fast, and the price was surprisingly lunch-time competitive, especially for the big portions. No bones or ribs, all the meat was pulled and ready to chow. The tables had three types of sauces available: two house-made sauces and a name-brand commercial sauce. We slathered all three on our lunch! Yummy. Everybody in the restaurant was happy and engaged in their meals--no complaints in sight! When we left, we were amazed that Lonnie had his counter worker come take his place as he took off his gloves and came around the counter to shake hubby's hand and ask if we enjoyed our meal! Now that is amazing customer care and service. He told us to have a safe trip and to come see him when we're back in the area. I have a strong feeling that we'll find ourselves "in the area" at least one more time before we leave tomorrow!

MAN! This is what BBQ is supposed to be. Another hidden gem in Topeka. If you're going to be in Topeka or you're just passing through, I definitely recommend stopping by, even though it's a bit off the beaten path. They're only open for lunch through the week, and the lines often get really long around noon. Lonnie himself is a really friendly guy and usually it's just him and 1 or 2 others working. As I have said in my other reviews, the meat is what makes BBQ for me, and Lonnie's is some of the best I've ever had. I love the brisket and pork, but the turkey is great, too. Also, the cheesy taters are amazing! This might be sacrilegious to connoisseurs of the Kansas City BBQ scene, but Lonnie Q's is definitely as good as Oklahoma Joe's - and actually, it might even be better in my opinion.
