The main reason we go to Russell's is if we can't think of anywhere else and want a salad. They have a small salad bar with the normal add-ins. However, while we used to go here on a more regular basis, the prices have increased so that they are one of the most expensive restaurants in Salina. While the food is decent, the atmosphere is really lacking--it doesn't look like this place has been updated since the 80's. For the price, I would much rather go to Tuscon's Steakhouse or Martinelli's Little Italy. Sidenote - If you would like an intestinal struggle, they have an all you can eat fried chicken night on Thursdays.

My husband and I ate breakfast there this morning. We got seated quickly, got our coffees quickly and got our breakfasts quickly. My breakfast was very good, I ordered two eggs over easy, patty sausage and a biscuit. Eggs were nicely done - at alot of other places I have to send them back because they come out too cooked. The restaurant was clean and a lot bigger than I thought. I'd go there again.

I had pancakes with ham and eggs. The price was kind of steep (just under $10), but the portions were big. Both the ham and eggs tasted great, but the pancakes were basic - not bad or good. My wife had a cheese omelet that had too much cheese in it for her, which is noteworthy since she likes cheese. The staff were friendly and we left full. More expensive than I would have preferred - the bill fit the portion sizes not so much the flavor.

We sat in silence at the restaurant bar in a haze from the years before. Four coffees, some black, some light brown. Empty creamers scattered. Loose silverware rearranged by our boredom. The salt and pepper shakers laughed at us with their confident postures. The waitress knew anything would do, but still felt obligated to ask "what are y'all having?" We looked up and smiled. Sometimes just simple human interaction is enough to keep you going. After dissecting the menu I knew only one item would suffice, the western omelette. I must admit that I didn't even ask what ingredients made the western omelette, but the title had won me over. This was my new life, miles upon miles from the dreaded east, eggs folded over ham and peppers, home fries so generously put together. I was saved. Our hearts and bellies were filled with optimism to live and love another day. Oh, Salina you rekindled my fire. Our journey from the east was plagued with hardship. We lost men on the way. We were lured by promises and fueled by dreams. I write this now from the road, with a new outlook on life. Our journey continues forever onward, thankful and hopeful.

The food was the decent down home kinda fare and the atmosphere made you think Flo would be telling you to "kiss my grits" at any time, but waaaaaayyyyyy too slow. Slow to be seated (not at all busy), slow to have our order taken, slow to be served (and we ordered the all you can eat special) and extremely slow to check out. If you are on the road and wanting something good and fast...keep looking.

Hit this place up 2x while in town. Key location right off the freeway. Good down home old style family coffee shop / diner flavor. Portions are VERY LARGE, large enough to satisfy any appetite. Pancakes (as there server warned us) are the size of HubCaps (she used Tires - I modified as they are the size of HubCaps). Basically, plate is just large enough to hold this behemoth. Great Flavor ! Egg dishes were cooked perfectly and the hashbrowns are some of the best I have had. 2nd trip in, stayed away from pancakes, not because they weren't great, just wanted to try something different and went with the waffles. Still a great portion size and light and fluffy. Service was pretty good and about what you would expect. This place is loaded with Locals, of course, there is not a whole lot around this kneck of the woods (aaah I mean plains). You walk in and it is funny as they will take a look at you as they know you aren't "from around these parts".... but they are still hospitable. If I am every in this part of the country again, Russell's is definitely on the Stop List !!!

Nice little no-frills diner. We stopped here for breakfast on our way through Salina. We did not order anything elaborate, scrambled eggs, biscuits & gravy. The sausage gravy was very tasty, which is important for a diner. The staff seemed stretched a little thin, but our waitress was very sweet and did an excellent job of multitasking. I loved sitting at the bar and watching all the orders come up. For a simple breakfast, we found it to be filling and well priced.

Not a bad little diner/cafe right on I-135 and near I-70. The portions were large, and there were a lot of options to customize your breakfast order. The hash browns were home made and fresh, and the service was just right. It's not fine dining; it's roadside dining, and it was value priced. Including tip, 2 breakfasts, a burger and a BLT, it was $40. Even at 8 at night, the biscuits weren't hard like you'd expect them to be; the mexican omelet was large, tons of hash browns, good BLT and burger, and lots of onion rings and fries. The server did a nice job of keeping our waters refilled. We've been to 'finer' places and the service was worse, as was the food. There was a slight smell when we entered, but that smell was only near the restrooms and you couldn't smell it from the restaurant. Plenty of booths and tables available. We'd probably eat there again.

I hope you read reviews. I know I gave them 3 stars, but that is only because the hash browns were really good. It is Thursday so I got the all you can eat chicken. The chicken was terrible. DO NOT ORDER THE CHICKEN

My wife and I eat here a lot. My favorite is the biscuits & gravy....homemade biscuits, lots of sausage and huge proportions! The pies are outstanding but usually no room for desert after such a large main course! Bob must be channeling his inner Italian Mom.....

My son and I stopped in wanting to try something new in town. We were totally impressed the portion amount. Much much larger than expected. My son liked his chickend fried steak. It was as large as the whole plate. They used another plate for the other stuff. I had a steak. It was ok. It was so thick it was not cooked like I wanted. Had I had it done a bit more it would have been much better. Salad bar was not that great. Will go back definately.

Stopped in on a Thursday night and tried the chicken dinner special. $8.95 for salad bar, entree and dessert isn't a bad deal. Still, I wasn't impressed. The service was ok - not great, but not bad either. Just ok. The food wasn't memorable either. The chicken was dry and bland, the fries were fries. They were out of baked potatoes by 6:30 and the waitress couldn't tell me if the mashed were homemade or instant. The free dessert was about the saddest little slice of a strawberry shortcake I've ever seen. I'd eat here again in a pinch, but I just don't see myself being that desperate. I guess it's ok for what it is - it's a diner right off the highway next door to a truck stop. If you've eaten at one greasy spoon you've eaten at most. Some do it better, some do it worse, most do it about the same as these guys. Not worth going out of the way for, but if you're there and you're hungry, you can do worse.

My husband and I may have eaten here once, during one of his first vists to Kansas after we got married. I've eaten here many times during my childhood and college years...since I basically grew up in Salina. To me, Russell's was (and hopefully) still is the place to go to get good old-fashioned humungous pieces of pie after an evening event somewhere. If you enjoy more of a mid-western way of cooking, then you'll enjoy the food here, too. The overall taste gets a 2 from me, the pies get a 4, and that makes a 3!

I've eaten at Russell's a few times, but it seems like they need some direction on how to cook a steak. I ordered a 14 oz strip & it was one of the worst steaks I think I have had. If you're going to cook a good cut of steak, please don't pan fry the meat. I think they need to invest in a grill to cook a good steak.

We ate dinner here will road tripping from Boulder to Tennessee. I wasn't expecting phenomenal food, but fresh vegetables would have been nice. Their salad bar was big, but mostly stocked with iceberg lettuce and canned vegetables. Meals (fried catfish sandwich and chicken served with mozzarella) were pretty good. Very tasty onion rings. They make and serve a variety of pies that looked pretty good but we did not eat dessert. It was non-smoking and conveniently located not far from I-70 and several hotels.

Been eating there for a time, food is always good. Biggest chicken fried steak in town and is good. Place used to be packed a good portion of the time but now even over the noon hour it is hardly half full. Not sure why as the menu hasn't ever changed, but maybe it is just more competition over the years, and yes the prices have gone up, but then everywhere else has too. I am not a big salad person but I like their simple salad bar and are one of the few to offer bacon bits. My wife really likes the peanut butter pies. And it is casual, no jacket required as another review seemed to indicate.

my daughter and I tried to eat there on Fri. first they wouldn't seat us. When we Finlay did we had to wait and wait for our waitress to come ask us what we want to drink. Finally someone showed up took our drink order and brought it and said our waitress would be with us. A couple came in sat down behind us got there drink order right away and ordered right away while we were still waiting. For our waitress to show up. I finally looked at my daughter and said how much was your drink (pop) 'i don't know". i got out $2.01 thought that was more than enough and took it to cash register and asked to talk to manager and explained everything to her. she said I didn't have to pay. I said we have been coming here over 20 years and this is the worse service I we have ever gotten and WE WILL NOT EVER EVER BE BACK. went to another restaurant the waiter was very nice (he could give them a few tips) and gave him $2.01 and explained the whole story above we all got a good laugh and he was very happy to get it.

This place is the first time I've been disappointed by yelp. We were using the android app while on a cross country road trip and the two 1 star reviews are filtered and so don't show up. Do not get off of I70 and get food from here. We had hopes for the pie, and ordered a slice of dutch apple and a slice of peach. Both were extremely disappointing because they were made with generic canned fillings and were not in any way good. I'm giving this 2 stars instead of the 1 it deserves because the food we ordered was what we expected, and I want to make sure this review shows up on the app. And the service was depressed, weird, and uncomfortable to be around.

I had a nice order of biscuits and gravy... the biscuits were soft and fluffy. The gravy was a little bland, but not bad. I had them put a couple of eggs over-easy on top, and they were cooked perfect. The hash browns were also perfect... crispy outside of the serving... fluffy inside. Coffee was okay. The service was A-OK as well. Not a bad breakfast spot. We got there right as they opened... 6am.
