Right from the start I knew this would be a place I will frequent. The staff was very friendly and the smells from the kitchen were authentic! My first visit was early (8:45 am) and I got the breakfast burrito. I'm not sure about this but the tortillas tasted and felt homemade. The burrito itself had sausage, cheese, eggs and potatoes. A very authentic breakfast burrito. My second visit. I had to try the torta. It was packed full of shredded pork. My favorite! But other meats available. It was very authentic with a grill warmed bun and had all the fixings. With my order I grabbed 6 tamales and chips n salsa The chips are good/extra crunchy and the salsa is on point, smooth with a little kick. The Tamales are as good as you could Ever ask for this side of dodge;) get a dozen and just warm them up. They are to die for!!

I came to Kansas to visit from Fort Worth, Texas and stopped by this amazing place. I had their enchiladas, Texas tacos and a breakfast burrito it was some of the best Mexican food I had here. I really recommend their breakfast burrito! I wish I could have one every morning and I will miss this place when I go back home. Service was great and the people who run the restaurant are sweet and very sociable you will feel right at home. If you ever find yourself in this neck of the woods I definitely recommend you to stop by and try their delicious food. Ps: props to the very handsome cook in the back

I really enjoy the food here, but for the second time in as many weeks I came by to eat and they were closed. This makes it very difficult to recommend since they may not be open. I get that it is a family business and family happens, but they need a good backup plan other than just being closed.

I was so happy to find that not only does Carmen's Cocina sell breakfast food, but they sell breakfast tacos on white corn shells. For me, that's the holy grail of breakfast foods. The freshness of their food combined with their amazingly friendly staff should keep people coming back, even to this small sister location to the original Carmen's Cocina in Merriam. It's in a tough location but their business is holding strong and I hope more people will support this excellent local Mexican restaurant.

At its heart a restaurant should be about food rather than the experience or other factors. That said, upon entering this establishment I was assaulted by the multiple good-natured persons eager to help me, as this was my first time here. I had the Crispy Taco Platter which came with chips and salsa, refried beans and rice. I chose one ground beef, one chicken and one carnitas taco. The best part was the taco shell - unique in thickness and taste. Ground beef had flavor, as did chicken for the reason it was aided by jalapeños. Carnitas was surprisingly dry. I left satisfied but unexcited. Salsa sauce needs a remake. No flavor. Best of luck to this establishment, as the people running it have heart.

My wife works nearby and stops in for lunch with her co-workers a lot. She has hyped this joint for quite awhile, so I was happy to finally try it out. We were here during breakfast and it was great. The gorditas are a lot of fun and pretty unique for KC. There is a real family atmosphere here too, which is cool. Just like at Carmen's Cocina I, the chips and salsa are awesome. Might be the best in town.

Awesome every time! Would never know it by looking outside, besides the line out the door of course. Highly recommend stopping in. Super friendly staff and amazing taste. Well done!

I had the hue is rancheros. It was good.. They are mostly set up for takeout orders. It was great to know they are open for breakfast. I am going to go back and try the breakfast burritos. With all the Mexican restaurants we have in Olathe, more should open up for breakfast. Thankyou and ad the guy at the counter says to everyone. Have a blessed day.

So I have now been to Carmen's Cocina II three times to include having breakfast there. I gave them four stars on my first review simply because I needed to get a better sampling size in order to justify five stars. I have had their burritos, tacos, chile rellenos, gorditas, tamales, and breakfast burritos now and this place is legit and absolutely deserves five stars. Their food is authentic and fresh and the owner is very friendly. Try their 'hot' salsa.....it will clear your sinuses out quickly.

Simply fantastic food and friendly service. Good value as well. My only complaint is they're not open every day. Which is fine, I'd be tempted to eat here every single day.

Since my last review, I've received amazing service. The food is still delicious and fresh, and now the service is to my liking. Maybe it was first timers bad luck, but ever since then, the atmosphere and service have been great. Thanks for the response, CC!

I've been to Carmen's several times, and have always had great service and great food. The restaurant is small, so dining in during the lunch hour can be a little difficult especially on $0.99 Taco Tuesdays. The chips and salsa are really really good, especially their chips. The chips are super crunchy and thicker than most Mexican restaurants. Everything I've tried here has been very good. I normally go for a steak burrito or one of the daily specials. The only thing preventing them from being 5 star is that they now charge $2.50 for the chips and salsa.

Came in just based on the special of the day- 3 soft tacos (aka street tacos) and a drink for 5.52. I had tacos de carne asada (steak) dressed with cilantro, onions and tomatoes on corn tortillas. They were awesome! They sell churros (fried dough covered in sugar) so I had to get that... perfection! !! You know it's an authentic mexican restaurant when they make gorditas so I'm going back for that very soon. Good customer service and a clean restaurant. I'd recommend it if you're looking for authentic mexican with just the basics. My rating is only a three as I have to try the other items on the menu

Wow! You know when the line is out the door the place is good. Love the 89 cent taco Tuesday's!

There is nothing on the menu I would not highly suggest getting. IT IS ALL GREAT. Best authentic Mexican place in town. Puts all the big chain restaurants to shame. Best part is it is family owned so they treat you above and beyond.

Moving out of state today. Why, oh why did I wait until today to first try Carmen's? Breakfast burrito was excellent AND breakfast for two cost les than our coffees at Starbucks. We will stop here every time we return to town.

Best breakfast burrito we've had since moving to Kansas! Coming from Texas breakfast burritos were plentiful and awesome and we've been searching for a good one for two years. This place has excellent breakfast burritos. Plus the service is great and the staff are friendly. I highly recommend Carmen's Cocina II!

I never expected to eat Mexican food this good in Olathe of all places. The food and the service were top notch. Will definitely make this a frequent stop.

Just had the hard shell tacos and they were edible. But that is about it. Shells seemed a bit too thick and tough. The meat was not very flavorful. The staff was friendly however not the most professional. I am still searching for a place that can compete with Margaritas tacos, a bit closer to home. But have still not found one.

I've been twice now to Carmen's and boy is it a gem for Olathe. The food is very tasty and they treat you like family. So far the carnitas gordita is my favorite. It reminds me of the ones I had when I lived in Mexico one summer. The pork is so flavorful and moist. I highly recommend it. My husband loves the ground beef gordita. I tried the tamales one my first visit and I wasn't overly impressed. They were good, but not amazing. Recently I tried the chicken enchilada and was not impressed at all. The red sauce had a strong metallic taste and it was topped with a blend of thinly shredded cheese that wasn't melted. It didn't add to the dish at all. The chicken inside was good, but really that's the only good thing about it. We love their chips and salsa, the chips are browned and crunchy. They are addicting. The salsa is thin and has good flavor. If you want hot sauce, ask for the bottle and be warned...it's legit. I do wish could enjoy a margarita with my meal, that would make it a bit better. But I understand they don't have a liquor license.

Very small, locally owned place that seemed to be staffed by family. The cutest little girl brought our food to the table. They charge extra for their chips and salsa, but we felt they were good enough that we were okay with that. We requested the spicy and mild sauces which was good because we mixed the two and really enjoyed it. Hubby was impressed they had shredded beef as a meat choice - always his favorite. The food was very fresh and seemed reasonably priced. Their hours are limited, so check before you go. We will go back.

I Love Love Love their taco salad with beef. By far the best taco salad. I just tried for the first time their breakfast gordita! I requested egg whites and the gentleman answering the phone said I have never had this request but we will see what we can do for you! They pulled it off and this was one of the best breakfast dishes I have had. Carmen's Cocina is now my favorite place for Mexican food! All of the staff here is super nice too! Prices are great too!

Normally I start with talking about the food as it is the most important part of a restaurant. Carmen's has awesome food, but I have to start this review with the service! Wow! The best customer service I have received in a restaurant in a long time. This is a fast food restaurant. You go up to a counter and place your order, pay, get your drink and have a seat with a number for your order. That is where the fast food service stops and the full service restaurant service starts. After I sat down, they brought me out chips and salsa, they brought me my meal instead of just calling out the number for me to come get it. They checked on me a couple of times and offered to get me refills. The cook, possibly owner came out and asked me how everything was. Everyone was smiling, polite, genuinely happy to have me come at their business. Three different people interacted with me during the visit and it was not in an overwhelming way. This is the kind of service that if the food was just ok, I would still add them to my list of places to go. The food isn't just ok, the food is pretty darn good. The chips appear to be homemade. Fresh and crispy The salsa has good flavor, not the best I have had, but not disappointing. I ordered the gordita dinner. It came with two gorditas, beans, and rice. The gordita shells are homemade and absolutely delicious. They are authentic and if you expect taco bell gorditas, keep driving. I got mine with pork, which had good flavor and a good helping of pork. They were topped with lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese. The rice was really good. Excellent flavor for a Spanish rice. The beans were good, could use a little more flavor. I am excited to go back and try the other options. The only thing that disappointed me today was that I didn't get a tamale. It was one of the specials and a lot of people were ordering them, I think I missed out on something and can't wait to try them. Carmen's opened last spring. I went in about 1:30 and they were pretty busy. A couple of tables were open and as people left their tables filled up. Pretty good turn over for the middle of the afternoon. (granted a lot of people are out and about today, but from the quality of food and service, I wouldn't be surprised to see them as a place that maintains a steady flow all day!)

Super friendly staff! Delicious authentic (non industriale) food! I had the tacos (bc it is taco Tuesday), a carnitas quesadilla, and nachos. Very good find! Thanks so much to all the staff!

Like other reviewers here, I hesitate to give 5 stars because I would like to keep it a secret! But they certainly deserve 5 stars as this is great, authentic Mexican food. Like real street food. The tamales are amazing, and all of the items I have tried have been so tasty. They are open limited hours, which in a strange way adds to the specialness of the place. And they don't always have tamales...look for the sign out front!

Dirt cheap, and DELICIOUS! The enchilada carnitas was particularly great. The owner came out to greet me and tell me about Tuesday Taco Night- yup, I will be there. Excited to find this little authentic gem.

I don't do a lot of reviews due to my schedule, but I use Yelp almost weekly because I am on the road a lot. I am writing this one with only one hesitation: I would love to keep this secret to myself. This place is insanely good. It is not convenienly located for a lot of traffic, but if you live north of 159th and do not have a reason to travel south, do yourself a favor and try this. First, these are the best breakfast tacos (burritos) you will find anywhere in the US (not an exaggeration). They are made fresh to order and are very generous. And they have the best salsa I have eaten anywhere-I wish they would bottle it. Then last weekend I went back because my son was craving another breakfast burrito (at 1 pm), and I ordered non-breakfast food for the first time. It was unbelievable. The tamales were heavenly. then even the tacos and rice were some of the best i have ever had. I don't know how you can make the best rice ever, isn't rice just rice? But everything they do is done with such care! I hate to make this place too busy and share my secret, but they deserve the props.

A welcome addition to South Olathe. Great food. Reasonable prices.

Everything was tasty, but the deluxe nachos were outstanding. For $6.50, we got a large order of crispy tortilla chips, beans, cheese sauce, chicken, lettuce, tomatoes and sour cream. You can also get jalapenos if you want. Quick, tasty, inexpensive and nice seating area. What a gem!

Great Tex Mex in the heart of Olathe. Luis' and his family go out of their way to give you an enjoyble dinning experience. My favorites are their carnita soft tacos and tamales. Ask for their spicy salsa. It has a nice kick!

Carmen's is my families favorite Mexican food. There Tuesday night taco special keeps us coming back week after week. We have tried most items on the menu and have never been disappointed. The tamales and Barbacoa are fabulous. Our family is made up of some picky eaters....no one complains when we bring Carmen's home. Family run and locally owned, this little gem is worth the trip to south Olathe.

Carmen's food is amazing. This is the quality Mexican food I've been looking for. Compared to other area Mexican food establishments this place blows them all out of the water. Flavorful meat and cheese sauce keep me coming back. As well as the quality customer service from the staff.

Amazing food, especially 89 cent taco night on Tuesdays. The only problem is the hours are horrible. I have tried most of the menu, and it is all good.

they sell the worst homeade crispy tacos ever! && worst chips and salsa! :D Also, previous review was from an owner/manager/employee.

Some of the best Mexican food I've ever had. It's quality and pure deliciousness and if that doesn't sound good you should have their breakfast because that stuff is straight fire. The owner gets time to know you and they always put your needs in front of theirs. I come here weekly and I don't ever see that changing

I love this place! If one likes great Mexican foods served by friendly helpful staff you will appreciate Carmen's. You will savor the chips which I think are the best I've ever had, super tasty chicken burritos and crunchy tacos. My wife and I make Carmen's a regular stop each week.

After sampling a few street taco places around the metro now this place is slipping downward. The tacos themselves are just middle of the road in flavor. They have not sauce/salsa that is even remotely hot. I compare non-spicy salsa to non-alcoholic beer...Not good! And when you pair this along with mediocre service its a measly two stars tops.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
