My mother, grandmother, and relatives, who are Croatian, always made delicious Potica (also known as Povitica). I've tasted other store bought Poticas/Poviticas in my life but NONE come as close to homemade as Strawberry Hill's Povitica. My favorite is the English Walnut, but the Cream Cheese and Apple Cinnamon flavors are also delicious. We were thrilled to discover that Strawberry Hill Povitica Co. sells poticas Costco several times each year. But, we've also ordered them online and they were delivered promptly and were very fresh. I highly recommend Strawberry Hill!

When I was growing up, my mom used to make povitica around Christmas, and sometimes Easter. (She's Irish, but she grew up near the Strawberry Hill neighborhood and had Croatian friends.) Is Strawberry Hill Povitica as good as my mom's? Will she kill me if I answer that? Hmm, well...look, squirrel! Strawberry Hill Povitica is my favorite of the storebought poviticas. It is the closest I've had to homemade, and I've had homemade from several people (I used to teach in Strawberry Hill, and got the usual gifts of food for the poor starving teachers, aside from family and friends' povitica). Povitica should be about 50/50 bread/filling, but it can sometimes be either very bread-heavy or filling heavy. Theirs is just about perfect. Their other flavors are heretical, in my mind--sorry, I'm a traditionalist. I feel that "flavored" povitica is just wrong, and those that make it should be cast out. That aside, though, their flavors are pretty good. They have one flavor especially, the Cokolada...oh, dear Lord, that's good. It is chocolate povitica. Just take a minute to dwell upon that. I am pretty sure you're heading to your car right now, aren't you? In fact, now that I write that, I'm contemplating how long it will take me to get down there. Can I get there before they close? Hmm...

One word: DELICIOUS DELICIOUS DELICIOUS. Ok, that was 3 words but that's just how many times I have to say it to relay how I feel about their products. This stuff is good. It's it as good as the home-made stuff? Well no, but I guarantee you that it is the best of the store-bought variety. Try it for yourself. You won't be disappointed.

I can't not love this bread. A Croatian treat indeed. I have my favorites but never met one I haven't liked. They run specials on single loaves, mini 4 packs & shipping discounts every now & then so keep a close watch. You can sample till your heart's content & wash it down with some free water or coffee. All loaves can be refrigerated & only the ones with cream cheese can't be frozen. It's become my go-to gift selection. Check out baking days where you can watch them make the bread, actually a little hypnotic at times & a fun time-filler with out of town visitors.

I love Povitica Bread...and their new building is so much more roomy than their last one. You walk in and can see the line to make the bread on the left, samples are in the middle, and the checkout is on the right. My favorite is Strawberry Cream Cheese and Apple Cinnamon. Magically delicious!

good dessert. Stop by the bakery and you can watch the crew of around 20 making the bread.

This inconspicuous storefront on the frontage road paralleling I--35 is home to Strawberry Hill Povitica Co, one of the best kept secrets of Kansas City. Povitica is layered nut bread popularized by Slavic grandmothers everywhere. Stay here long enough and you'll inevitably hear "this stuff is good, but not as good as my grandmother's recipe." No, SHP is not as good as your grandmother's recipe (especially mine - hers was the bomb) but SHP is the best around and it's pretty darn good. Though you can often buy SHP in local grocery stores, this place is the factory outlet that provides freshly made loaves of povitica sure to please. There are different varieties to choose from including cranberry walnut, chocolate, pumpkin (seasonal), and the classic English walnut. If you're a povitica purist, it's walnut or nothing. If you're new to the nut bread scene, the other varieties are really good too. These three pound loaves are about 19 bucks a piece, pricey, but well worth it. Whether you are stocking up for the holiday season (a must in Slavic cultures) or just snacking, poviticas are a delicious treat that everyone can enjoy.

I LOVE THIS PLACE. It's the only place in town that I can get Potica just like my lovely grandma used to make. As much as she'd probably laugh that I buy it here instead of make it, it warms the soul to have a fond memory of a loved one. Definitely a favorite.

Sent the 3 and 4 loaf packs to customers for the 2nd Christmas in a row. I thought they were like the Babka bread from Dean and Deluca. This year, I ordered some for us to try at the office and am so disappointed in the pumpkin bread. It's bland, dry and tasted old. The lemon bread had better flavor but still dry and crumbly. Maybe I'm just unfamiliar with this bread, but I'm not impressed.

We love the povitica. It's not all that authentic when compared to the kind made in Grandma's kitchen, but in and of itself it's delicious. We buy it for our out of town relatives to give them a taste of Kansas City.

I was fairly recently introduced to this wonderful loaf that is Povitica. This is defnitely the place to get it, especially around the holidays. They often times sell their top 4-5 varieties at Costco for a little bit better rate in the fall/winter months.

I have been a fan of this artisanal sweet bread for years. Good Povitica is an art form, handed down from generation to generation. Great Povitica... can be found at Strawberry Hill Povitica Co. This is really a no brainer. Buy theirs. If you have ever attempted to make your own, you'll know what I am talking about. It's a lot of work! If you are lacking a Croatian Grandma, and really, how many of us can say we have one?, sample this wonderful, dense, rich, moist, tender, and decadent bread and share my enthusiasm. They have varieties like: Apple Cinnamon, English Walnut, Chocolate Chip, Blueberry, Strawberry, Cream Cheese, and Poppy Seed. Plus they will ship all over the country for a nominal fee. Who among you can put a price tag on a Croatian Grandma?

Povitica is a traditional Eastern European Dessert. Povitica has been a staple at many holiday and family gatherings for generations. I was excited to order a sampler of a few different flavors, but I wasn't very impressed. I would rather keep buying from local old fashioned european bakeries in the area.

Tasted it and bought it at Costco. Absolutely perfect! We loved every flavor, but bought the Apple Cinnamon. I would get that one again, and probably the walnut and the cream cheese ones in the future. Very soft and flavorful, moist. They look dry and crumbly, but once you bite into it, you'll be hooked on the soft texture and great flavor! Tastes homemade. You can actually taste the fresh butter in it! I'm get so disappointed in bakery products that taste artificial or chemically. The Strawberry Hill Povitica tastes totally homemade! We plan on using them as gifts as well, sure to impress! Better than giving a box of chocolates or a fruit arrangement! These breads are great for dessert and are nice an unique. It's a little cheaper when you get them at Costco, but they are only there occasionally, so stock up and freeze them! They stay up to 3 months in the freezer, but they don't recommend freezing anything with cream cheese in the filling.

Just like my family recipe, without all the work! Amazing. Many of my family could not tell which one we made and which one we bought. Excellent job, thank you!
