On a drive across the country in November 2014 [Northeastern PA to Santa Monica CA!] my friend and I stopped at La Hacienda. They were two minutes from closing, but when we told them what we were doing they stayed open extra to make our food and chatted with us about our experiences. Very nice people, very good food, and truthfully the only thing we did in Kansas besides get a speeding ticket. Thanks for everything, La Hacienda! Kansas is known as a bane to any transcontinental road-tripper's enthusiasm, but you helped us recover!

I was brought here by a friend and now this is the only Mexican restaurant I go to while in Liberal. I have been to all the Mexican restaurants in this town, and this is the one with the tastiest food and bigger menu. If you are a fan of true Mexican food they have the platters that would please even people who grew up on Mexican food like me. If you want Tex-Mex, they have it too and they will modify anything on their menu to make sure you have a pleasant experience. If you want to try the authentic platters on their menu ask them what "guisados" they have for the day. If you think the standard salsa is to mild, ask for the "other" sauce, the green picosa one. I'm very happy to have found this place as I'm in town for business every other week.

This was the closest Mexican place to our hotel although there were other options. The atmosphere is nothing Mexican and looked much like a cafeteria. The complimentary salsa is a watery consistency that you pour from a plastic bottle on the table and had a slight bit of heat but not much taste. I ordered my usual"camarones a la diabla" that I get at most every mexican place, but this was very disappointing. The shrimp was boiled and then drenched in sauce that again, like the salsa, had a bit of spice but no real taste. The accompanying rice was sticky plain white rice like i've never seen served with this dish, such as the under-cooked waffle fries! The guac and salad was OK but nothing special. $15 of regret for this dish. They do have a full bar so thank goodness for Dos Equis and Patron!

At first, La Hacienda seems like a casual, authentic Mexican restaurant. However, it is all a mirage. First server who came to our table spoke about 5 English words. Not usually a problem but when we asked for margaritas we were told, "No. Don't have." Unfortunately for her, margaritas are listed on the first page of the menu and the bar with all the necessary ingredients was in full view of the dining area. The server was promptly replaced by another server who was more knowledgable about the menu and was able to communicate better. Pricing for what I ordered was fine but nothing had an authentic or bold flavor. This theme stretched all the way to the chips, which were stale and unsalted, and the salsa, which lacked flavor, spice, and was served in a squirt bottle. Service was fine and we were often asked if we needed anything else. Thank goodness they served alcohol or the trip would have been a total bust. My recommendation would be to try another establishment.

Found this hidden gem while getting our car fixed across the street! Read a review on Yelp and decided to check it out. Wide variety of VERY authentic Mexican food including sopes and tamales in addition to the usual taqueria style menu one finds in Mexican places in the U.S. I understand they have a secondary menu - if you don't see what you want just ask - they will probably be able to make it for you. The service was attentive, quick and accommodating. We were there just at closing and the owner kept saying "I have lots of work to do - just take your time!" And she meant it. Although they have a full bar, a more knowledgeable bartender would have been a plus; the margaritas were quite good, though. Housed in some sort of former Bob Evan's-like place, La Hacienda gets high marks for the food and moderate marks for ambiance. Which is all good because you don't go there for the decor - you go 'cause mamacita is cooking in the kitchen!
