One of the few BBQ joints that is consistently on point with their food. I don't know how they do it but SH5 has it figured out. I haven't had a bad meal here, or at any of their locations for that matter. My favorite is the Carolina sandwich with pulled pork, spicy slaw and Bubba sauce. The portabello Z-Man is my go to when I'm in a non-meat (what tha...) mood. As for sides - you can't go wrong with the fries or onion rings but if you are in the mood for something different go for the smoked white chicken chili and BBQ dirty rice. The BBQ dirty rice is OMG good and beautifully spicy. My only desire would be to see something more interesting for the salad options. The base of the salad is like something from a bag and very uninspiring. When people visit from out of town, this is the first KC BBQ experience they get and so far, not one of them has been disappointed.

There are other BBQ names which have a longer history and bigger name. However, Joe's is clearly stealing the hearts and taste buds of the locals. If you are visiting the Kansas City area or just haven't had the opportunity to visit Joe's yet, do yourself a favor and treat your taste buds to what I believe is hands down the best BBQ in the Kansas City area. After you eat, be sure to pick up a bottle of their famous sauce to use at home. This should help hold you over until you can go back for some more great BBQ.

So, I haven't tried any other KC BBQ, but I totally loved this place. We went at 12:30p on a Tuesday and the line only wrapped around the inside of the restaurant - I considered that lucky since I'd herd about it wrapping out and around the building. It moved pretty fast, too! We probably only waited 10-15 minutes - just enough time to look over the menu. My husband ordered the Z-Man and loved it! I got Hog Heaven, which was delicious! And we shared an order of fries - thank goodness we shared because they give you a huge bag of them! They're seasoned nicely and have the perfect amount of crunch! We'll definitely visit OK Joe's next time we're in town and probably order the exact same thing!

Nice place to hangout with friends or family. Loved their bbq sauce. Had the bbq ribs and chicken. I loved the chicken better. It was so tender and juicy the I decided to buy some more bbq chicken for take out. I'm on a temporary stay at KC and I think Joe's BBQ is something that I'd be reminded of whenever I think of KC!!

  • Andrew C.

Just excellent. Arguably the best ribs in town. I like the hog heaven, let the extras fall out of the bottom in to my baked beans and hose it with the best spicy bbq sauce in town!!

I'm from out of town and visited on a Wednesday night. The line was to the front door but went quickly. I ordered the rib dinner with fries and potato salad. I honestly think I am ruined of bbq for life. There is no Joe's in my city and nothing else will taste like it. The ribs were perfectly seasoned and meaty...my table had 2 sauces, a regular and a hot...I mixed them together and I think that contains the meaning of life. I'll need to come up with an excuse to visit again very soon.

    - catered food for a friends event so I can't say anything about the establishment itself - recommend: ribs and burnt ends - cheesy corn is interesting, its basically canned corn in kraft mac and cheese sauce - ribs were almost fall off the bone, with a s

Wow!!!! What a place - amazing food! Loved the BBQ sauce. French Fries were also a great treat. Looking forward to coming back to KC!!!! You should open up a place here in Omaha!!

"As good as it gets," sums this place up in a nutshell. Formerly Oklahoma Joe's, Joe's Kansas City has only changed their name. The food has always been off the charts good- that remains.

The best Beef Burnt Ends and French Fries in the USA! Number 1 BBQ joint. A Kansas City Staple. All three locations are equally amazing. Don't believe the hype when people say the original gas station location is better. There all the same and they are all excellent.

Having been thwarted a second time this year from visiting the original Oklahoma Joe's, my co-workers and I decided to venture to their outpost across the state line in Leawood, KS. Even though this location did not have the ambiance and mystique of being located next to a gas station and in downtown KC, the BBQ was every bit as good. I'm not sure it's the best 'Cue I've ever had, but it is definitely top 5. As we pulled up during the lunch hour, there was a line that snaked out the door and around the block. After about 30 minutes, I thought to myself, "this BBQ better be worth all the hype which has garned praise on Zagat, Yelp, Food Network, and lots of other national media". After my first bite of the succulent fall-off-the-bone ribs and I knew the hour wait was a small price for this awesome 'Cue. With each bite I kept thinking, "OMFG!!! These ribs are freaking delicious!" And how to describe them? Excellent smoke ring, with a flavorful spice rub, and I really like how the ribs were not drenched in sauce which allowed the qualty of the meat to shine through. As for the brisket, it was tender, moist, with a subtle smokey flavor. Really good, although not as good as the brisket I've had in Texas. One of my co-workers was nice enough to let me try his burnt ends, and those were heavenly. My side of so-called "spicy slaw" was okay, but not nearly as spicy as I would've preferred. It really tasted like their regular coleslaw with some Texas Pete mixed in. Stick with either the beans or the Dirty Rice. TIP: Of the two available sauces on the table, I'd recommend the spicy BBQ version over their original. I was chatting with one of the staff as they were preparing my meal and she indicated that by year's end, Oklahoma Joe's would be changing their name to Joe's of Kansas City ( kansascity.com/news/busi… ). Whatever their name is or will be, I HIGHLY recommend a visit to sample either their award winning ribs or burnt ends. This is one of the few dining experiences I've had recently that actually exceeded my expectations.

    (5)
  • Zach S.

The best BBQ you will ever have. If you are there on a day that they have burnt ends, you're in for a real treat. If not, then the Z-Man is the way to go.

    (5)
  • Eric S.

What can I say that hasn't already been said? This place puts KC BBQ on the map. I always call it in for pickup now because the popularity has become overwhelming, and while I respect the owner's vision to not expand, there's a building connected to the east that would make a great dining area. The Z Man sandwich with fries is the best thing on the menu, and I'll argue that any day. The ribs aren't as good as Gates, but everything else on the menu is phenomenal. The Z Man chicken is really good too, as is the Smokey Joe, but nothing comes close to the Z Man brisket on bun, with the mozzarella cheese, pickles and an onion ring.

  • Jaewon L.

Had Carolina Pork Sandwich and the pork was soft and tender with spicy slaw to balance the sweet, tangy bbq sauce.

  • Sheila B.

Always has been the best. Always will be. I love the new vegetarian option - zman! We love you! Amazing sides- especially spicy slaw & fries. Most amazing sauces.

  • Lauren E.

So the fact that this place has gone hopelessly corporate has not changed the fact that this barbecue is damn delicious, at least not that I can tell. Despite the tshirts! cube o sauce! coffee mugs! gift shop! I would recommend this stop.

  • Michael P.

This place is pretty good, I am actually writing a review to address the one deficiency. But first, the pulled pork was excellent, I didn't even waste time with sauce. Fries, very good. Baked beans, tasty. Now for the negative. What in THE HELL are they doing with their brisket? I got the 2-meat dinner plate with the pulled pork and the brisket, and the brisket looked like the meat from an Arby's roast beef sandwich. What is the point of taking the time and care of smoking a brisket to tender goodness if you're just going to slice it like it's going on an Arby-Q? Brisket should be sliced about 1/4" thick so you can appreciate the tender meat and the delicious fat. Slicing good smoked brisket paper-thin is just a complete and utter waste. I'll go back to Joe's, but ain't no way in hell I'm ever touching the brisket again.

  • Vanessa G.

Great food. Great ambience. I came here for a work dinner. It isnt a fancy pleace, but then again if you are having messy barbeque I think thats best. I got the 2 meat dinner: brisket and pulled pork with a barbecue side. Only bad comment. Their spicy barbeque was not spicy. But I also can take the heat. I fully recommend this place.

Really enjoyed their BBQ... Fun atmosphere in the gas station! Need to come eat here again before I move away!

  • Kay L.

The restaurant's name change to "Joe's Kansas City" makes my previous review seem out-of-date, but be assured that nothing has changed other than the signage on the building. My love for the Z-man is as vast and abiding as always. The seasoned fries are pretty kick-ass. And I love the separate take-out counter, which has always been really fast for call-in orders. This, ladies and gents, is my go-to BBQ in town... which, in Kansas City, is an important & momentous declaration to make. Chow down.

  • Matt B.

The best bbq I've ever had....the burnt ends May be one of the best things I've ever ate. This place is awesome. It's worthy of all the hype.

Best Q in the KC area, and it's not even close! Sauces rock and the ribs, pulled pork and sausage are personal faves. Never had a meal there i didn't like!

  • Rahul H.

Good not great. I was expecting the world from the pork ribs. Especially since this is one of Bourdain's "must eat places". They were good but a little dry and needed a decent amount of the crutch of BBQ sauce. What I did think was phenomenal was the beef brisket. Real flavorful and I did not think the smokiness over powered the tender meat's flavor. Sides I had were spicy slaw and red beans and rice. Both were half a step above the sides we used to get from KFC when I was in middle school. I would absolutely go back though for the much talked about Z Man sando, which has brisket in it.

  • Josh R.

Excellent Bar-b-que. Had ribs and pulled pork. The pulled pork was a 4.5 out of 5 stars, a bit more bark and it would have been a five for me. The ribs were a 5 out of 5. Excellent flavor, good smoke without it being too much. Perfect consistency in that they were just shy of falling off the bone, but you still had to bite it. Whenever I am back in the area, I will definitely be back!

Best BBQ. Had the Carolina pulled pork and pulled chicken with onion rings. All great

I consider myself somewhat of a foodie, enjoying trying the best local eateries when I visit new places. One of the first places my co-workers took me to when I first came to visit Kansas City was Oklahoma Joe's. While my reviews are not the same caliber as Anthony Bourdain, the star of No Reservations and I share the opinion that Joe's is the best BBQ in Kansas City. And if you didn't know, Kansas City is one of the top BBQ cities in the world. I recommend their pulled pork and their brisket. Their potato salad side is wonderful as well. If you love BBQ, you'll love this place!

  • Alonzo Z.

BBQ On point! Must stop here when visiting Kansas City. We got lucky with no line around 4pm. The baked beans are sweet & the onion rings are crispy. I recommend ordering the Z-Man sandwich.

  • C M.

My team and I come to Kansas City about twice a year on business, and this place is one of the highlights of the visit. We have tried other BBQ joints around, but this place is the epitome of Kansas City BBQ. I have tried the ribs, burnt ends, sausage and chicken and everything is melt in your mouth tender, juicy and well seasoned. This isn't your white table cloth scene like some other places around. This is real plastic table, plastic tray, family style bbq. So bring your appetite and get ready for some good down home food.

We heard amazing raving reviews of Joe's BBQ, and I have to say...meh! We came the day prior to Thanksgiving, and the line was out the door, which meant that the restaurant was chilly! They have a sign that asks everyone to keep the doors shut, but it doesn't work. After waiting at a table with my 89 year-old Great Aunt (and getting some rude stares for it...jeez! She's 89!), my parents delivered our food. The pulled pork was okay, but the ribs were terrible! These ribs encapsulated everything that is NOT fall off the bone meat. Cold and unsatisfied, we left, and thankfully had the most delicious smoked ribs the next day from my uncle! Don't do ribs if you aren't going to do them right.

Best ribs I've ever had hands down. Service was fast too, what can I say. This is a must stop when visiting KC. Next time I'm going to have visit the original home of Oklahoma Joes.

Had lunch here this afternoon. The food was ok. Had combo sandwich with pulled pork and ham, w fries and coleslaw. Was not bad but not the best either. Would have like the meat to be juicer with more flavor. Service was efficient and good.

My boyfriend and I were in town for a family wedding. We had been out shopping with my family when someone suggested we go to Oklahoma Joe's for lunch. We already knew we would be having Jack Stack at the wedding so we debated having BBQ for lunch as well. Boy, am I glad we decided to go for it. There were seven of us on a Saturday for lunch. We waited in line for maybe ten minutes, not bad at all. Five of us ordered the zman. The other two had a salad and a turkey sandwich. We had several orders of fries and onion rings along with some beans. We were easily able to find a table to fit our entire group. Everything tasted great! The zman was probably one of the best BBQ sandwiches I've ever had. Everyone devoured their food. I can't wait until the next time I'm in kc to go again. I'm pretty sure I've ruined all non kc BBQ for my boyfriend as I've now taken him to two kc staples and he's said it's the best he's ever tasted. Great food and quick service! When we left, the line was out the door.

This place is one of my favorite BBQ places to go with my friends. I really love the Z-man burger and the ribs! Decent portion and GREAT taste! Honestly, it's amazing! The only downside of this place would be the fact that IT'S ALWAYS SO CROWDED!! Get there early, or be prepared to wait in line.

  • Rhonda P.

This is more a 3 1/2 stars. The BBQ is good but not the best I've had so far. I keep comparing BBQ places to John Russel's. The hunt continues.

  • Jordan R.

This place has awesome BBQ. I got the ribs and brisket meal and it was awesome. Their spicy BBQ sauce is outstanding, good tasting and a little bit of a kick. Fries are awesome too. Only reason I rate it 4 instead of 5 is because their sides aren't all that. Pretty good but nothing too special. Get the fries instead of a side and you won't regret it.

This is THE place for BBQ in Kansas City. I've tried Arthur Bryants but this is hands down tastier and fresher. AB has always tasted a bit more like fast food and stale. From the ribs to the Z-man you really can't go wrong with anything on Oklahoma Joes menu. It's SO DAMN GOOD. Anytime we have visitors in town, this is the one place they want to eat at everyday :)

We waited all week long for this special outing, and boy was all the hype met with some truly delicious BBQ. Our table had several individual orders plus the slab of ribs and extra orders of fries and onion rings for everyone to share. I personally ate an entire Carolina pulled pork sandwich with spicy slaw, plus a couple of those falling-off-the-bone tender, perfectly cooked ribs (not charred, not fatty). The line can get long, and being in it seems like some clever trick to get you to order more than you need -- as you wind your way around the restaurant watching people eating unbelievable amounts of meat and the light smokey smell of BBQ makes you 100x hungrier than you thought you were when you first arrived. I'm no BBQ expert, and I know the war rages on for the top spot between a quality few in KC, but this was a wonderful meal even for someone like me who never actually craves this type of meal. Folks who have grown up here took us to Oklahoma Joe's, claiming it's the best. TIP: buy a beer at the register by the front door to help you meander through the order process.

Who in the world voted this place anywhere near "best BBQ"? Yuck! I find it hard to believe that this place has won awards at the American Royal, or anywhere else for that matter. Having lived in the Kansas City metro all my life, I've eaten at just about every BBQ joint around town. OK Joe's is just that...OK. And I'm being generous when I say that. Sorry, but for my money I'll stick with Zarda, Gates, or Jack Stack. Even Arthur Bryant's is better, and I've never been an AB fan. I have no explanation for why this place gets such rave reviews. This was my first visit, and my husband's second. My husband's first visit was a disappointment. Well, we were both disappointed this time round. My first visit will also be my last. The line was almost to the door, and the dining room was extremely crowded and LOUD. Most of the tables were either so close together there was barely enough room to pull out the chair and sit down, or they were pushed together in a "community-style" dining arrangement. I absulutely DETEST community-style setups. When we finally got our food and managed to find an empty table, I had to sit with my stomach almost crammed up to the table top, and I'm not a large person. I can't imagine how uncomfortable a larger patron would have been. The table top and bottles were all greasy. Yuck. The last thing I want to do when eating food with my hands is to handle something with the last person's finger grease and who knows what else on it. I couldn't wait to get out of this place. We both ordered the pulled pork sandwich. First off, I'm not a child. As such, I do NOT need you to cut my sandwich in half. I want a whole sandwich, so I can add toppings and sauce without having them and the meat fall out of the bun. Second, this was NOT a pulled pork sandwich, but two huge chunks of pork slapped onto the middle of the bun, so the whole outer ring of the bun had no meat at all. Pulled pork should be...pulled. Third, while the pork was moist, is was completely bland and flavorless. It had no smoke flavor, not even a hint of seasoning. It tasted and looked like a Boston butt that was cooked in a crock pot. Actually, it wasn't even that good. Just a huge, bland chunk of pork slapped on a bun, with about a teaspoon of sauce squirted on top. Now, on to the sides. We ordered a cup of baked beans and a cup of creamy coleslaw, along with an order of fries, thinking that since the menu said "feeds 2 people" that we could share the sides. I noticed that they didn't give us plates, but a tiny flat plastic tray lined with brown bag paper. Irritating, because it made it impossible to divide the sides. Sorry, but the thought of liquidy food seeping through a thin piece of paper onto a greasy tray that was last given a good scrub who-knows-when is not appetizing to me. I hate eating out of the same container someone else is eating out of, even if it is my husband. My hubby generously offered to let me eat what I wanted from the sides before he dug in. I took one bite of the beans and right away noticed a strange spice that I couldn't place, but whatever it was, it did not belong in baked beans. I ate a couple of fries and decided to give the beans a second taste. Egads, whatever they put in those beans is awful. And I love baked beans. Even beans that are just mediocre I can usually stomach. But not these beans. Two bites was all I could stand. My husband thought they were just tolerable. I had pretty much the same reaction to the creamy coleslaw. It was some of the worst I've ever eaten. KFC and Popeye's slaw is way better, and that's sad. OKJ 's slaw tasted like watered down mayo poured over cabbage. Bland, bland, bland. I had already spooned some of it onto my sandwich before I tasted it, and I immediately regretted it. It didn't add flavor, just made the bun soggy. I love good coleslaw, but I couldn't eat this stuff. I tried to give it a chance, but after the second bite I gave up. Even my hubs couldn't eat the slaw. The seasoning on the fries was very tasty, but it wasn't evenly coated. Some fries had hardly any seasoning, while others were much too heavily coated, rendering them almost too salty to eat. In addition to the food, my husband also ordered a beer, with the total coming to $29. If the food had been good I wouldn't mind paying this much. But for the bland crap we were served, NO! One thing I noticed was the children's menu pricing. Specifically the fact that an adult could order a kid's meal but there would be an up charge of about $1.50 or so. WHY??? Pure nonsense, and especially crappy for someone who is trying to watch portion sizes. You might as well order the adult portion, but that's not really the point, is it? Again, the fries were good, and the portion of fries was HUGE. So if you're looking for pretty good fries go ahead and get in line. I wouldn't recommend wasting your time on anything else though.

I finally made it into Joe's. I thought it was solid BBQ, but I was not blown away like I expected to be. I got a simple beef sandwich and sides. Seating was sparse and would be a challenge the larger group you brought in. Overall, I would go again and would try the famed Z-man next visit.

Stopped by for lunch and although there was a pretty long line ahead of us, it moved pretty quickly. I had pulled pork and a side of baked beans and both were delicious! Hubby had ribs with pulled pork and coleslaw and he enjoyed it all, although he LOVED the ribs! Would definitely return!

Not a whole lot I can say about this place that hasn't already been said. It's a Kansas City must eat type place.

As an out-of-towner, THIS is what I wanted from a KC BBQ experience. I must admit that I am a vegetarian, so imagine my surprise that they had a portabello bbq sandwich, and let me tell you, it was amazing. The sauces were out of this world and the fries, baked beans and slaw were top notch. My boyfriend had the brisket sandwich was was blown away as well!

Word's can't begin to describe how good this place is. The wife and I took a weekend trip to KC and BBQ was the objective. This was our first dining destination. First off, this isn't a sit down and order place. You walk in the door and you get in line. It was 2:30 on a Saturday afternoon when we arrived and the line was to the door and it wrapped all along the outer edge of the restaurant until you got to the counter. It took about 20 minutes to make our way to the front which considering the size of the line I was pretty impressed. I ordered the burnt end platter which burnt ends are only offered on certain days of the week. My wife got a two meat dinner. Both came with a side and a piece of toast under the meat to soak up the goodness. I opted for the potato salad and she got the slaw. My dinner was absolutely fantastic! The burnt ends are the way to go if you happen to stop in on the days they serve them. I got a heaping plate of them and then smothered them in their Night of the Living Barbeque sauce which is their hot BBQ sauce offering. Words can't do it justice. The potato salad was a dijon mustard based salad and was just ok but who cares? I'm not there for the sides. They do serve beer but that's about it. There is no bar or anything, this place is about the meat and sauce. One last thing and it's a small hiccup, not even their fault. If you have AT&T for cell service like I do the inside of this place is a dead zone. Not sure why but the building construction really kills cell signals. And they don't have WiFi. Not a deal breaker but when I was standing in line for 20 minutes it was hard not being able to use my phone. This is a must visit if in KC. If you consider yourself American then you owe it to yourself to get to one of the Okie Joe's locations if in town. Do it.

Perfect BBQ. My favorite in Kansas city. There is usually a line no matter when you go Saturday, but outside of busy lunch and dinner times, its not too long of a wait on the weekdays. Remember that all joes locations are closed on Sundays!

The BEST BBQ in KC! Brisket is to die for as it melts in your mouth. Ribs are best in KC. Lines are long depending on time of day, but service is friendly and fast. You won't wait long even if the line is out the door. Prices are decent for the amount of food you receive. Honestly the only thing I don't like from here is the baked beans. Fries are always a hit with my wife and daughter. Don't be afraid to try something new as everything (except the beans) is fantastic. Almost every celebrity has tried this while in town and they have won multiple major awards for their food. Always a highlight when I can say I am eating there later in the day!

Oklahoma Joe's has a great atmosphere and scrumptious food. Of all the barbecue places I've been to in Kansas City, Oklahoma Joe's is certainly my favorite. They make some tasty ribs and I love the Carolina sandwich and the Z-Man. Their fries are also quite good and they give you more than enough of them so consider sharing with a friend.

Best pulled pork (jumbo sized) sandwich I have had in the KC area yet. The onion rings and the z-man sandwich looked delicious. Portions are generous & fresh! Can't wait to come back & enjoy this deliciousness

Great service - will get some bbq in your hands. Really helpful staff. Sauces are self serve so you will get what you want. Chicken was great, ribs were ok.... Sorry we had better ones before, brisket was outstanding!

  • Toby N.

This is our go to place in KC. We're not a fan of the new name as we liked the nostalgia that came with Okie Joes, but their bbq is top notch!! Our go to is pulled pork and the chicken. If you haven't tried their chicken gumbo or chilli you must give it a try. We're not a fan of their beans and their brisket and ribs are good but it's the chicken and especially the pulled pork you want. As for sauces, we mainline Night of the Living BBQ sauce. It's worth the wait and they move you thru the line quickly but it's worth the wait.

    (5)
  • Justin G.

As good as it's advertised. And the wait isn't very long. Some pro tips. Always get the fries for a few folks. One order is enough. The Z Man comes in veggie form with a portabella mushroom base. If you're a veggie, order that and the fries. All in all, amazing!

With all these reviews of Oklahoma Joe's as the "best bbq in Kansas" and the line out the door when we arrived, you'd think that no one had ever been to Arthur Bryants, Fiorella's Jack Stack, or KC Masterpiece before! We inadvertently had OK Joe's twice in one day--at lunch and then surprisingly for the reception dinner at a wedding we attended that evening so I can speak more broadly about it having had two experiences. Now, don't get me wrong, Oklahoma Joes is ok. But really--just ok. It's more like fast food bbq than a true bbq experience. You order at a window, slide down to another register to pay, and you receive your order at a counter before you head to your table. That's McDonalds...and I don't like McDonald's so I'm not looking for the McDonald's experience. The side dish options are minimal at best compared to other bbq joints. The overall selection of bbq is just meh. The food tastes alright, albeit a bit salty but it is not dressed AT ALL and it's just meh. You have to add your own bbq sauce to taste at your table once you've found a spot to sit. There was no help in finding a table at all though the table hops are real quick to clear your tray before you've even finished your food! We ordered the Z-man and the portobello Z-man. Both are just ok. The brisket was fatty and it's not dressed at all. The portobello Z-man was good but also not dressed. You'd think there would be some sort of sauce already on these sandwiches but they are plain jane and salty. We had potato salad which is way over dressed but under seasoned and we had the beans. The beans are EXCELLENT. At the reception, we had the same under dressed, under seasoned fatty brisket, sausage, coleslaw, the same over-dressed under seasoned potato salad but those amazing beans. I guess I just don't get the hype at all after having eaten at Jack Stack's, KC Masterpiece, and Arthur Bryants. Those are BBQ joints at their finest. Oklahoma Joe's is BBQ fast food. If you like fast food, you'll like this. But if you desire and deserve something better...there is much better in Kansas City.

You'd think with all the times that I've been here I'd have a review for it. But apparently in the multiple times I've been here over the past year and half I'd never written a review for OK Joe's. So I best get on it; don't you think? First and foremost, I want to make it clear that I have yet to go to the original OK Joe's location. Mostly because the only time my boyfriend remembers that I haven't been there we've 1) already eaten dinner, 2) it's 2am and they aren't likely to be open, or 3) he wants BBQ but this location is closer. Anyway based on everything I've heard about Kansas City BBQ and OK Joe's I was excited for my first trip about a year ago with my co-workers. I am in no ways an expert on BBQ - honestly I feel that other than the differences in dry rub or sauce...it's really just meat. But having lunch here multiple times - I have to say that in comparison to some other BBQ places I've been (which really isn't all that many) the food is excellent. When my boyfriend and I eat here we usually share a rack of ribs and get either french fries or onion rings. The smell alone was able to make my mouth water, which doesn't usually happen when it comes to BBQ. The meat was tender and fell of the bone. Really when talking about BBQ all that counts is the meat...besides I can't remember what the sides were like. Delicious BBQ, fun ambiance, but busy as hell during peak hours.

Hands down the best BBQ in KC. The Z Man sandwich is amazing and so are the ribs. Usually a fairly long line, but very much worth the wait!!

In a town known for its BBQ, this place is the king. Whenever friends and business colleagues come from out of town, this is the first place I take them to. I insist on ordering the Z-Man sandwich, the brisket meal, and a side of ribs--- you cannot go wrong with anything on the menu. If I ever leave KC, this will be in the top 5 places I'll dearly miss.

Great atmosphere! I had the turkey sandwich and baked beans. It was amazing!!!! I have heard a lot about this place and it was true. One of the best if not the best BBQ I have ever eaten. You will not be disappointed.

REALLY?? The best in KC? Last night I found the brisket lacking in flavor, with a vague smoke taste and little rub to enhance it. Also, the meat is sliced wafer thin, masking the fact that it obviously was not smoked long enough to get past the "stall" (look it up amazingribs.com/tips_and… ) to break down the collagens. Perhaps I'm spoiled by Chicago's Smoque, which earned Michelin awards, but the brisket was 2nd rate. On the other hand, the BBQ chicken gumbo was tasty, with just enough heat, nice roux. Although, the gumbo/rice ratio was a bit low. One irritant, my wife, on Weight Watchers, likes limit her potions, so she ordered a child-sized sandwich. They up-charged her $1.60 for the privilege since she was over 12. What's the point of that?? As an over 40-year old, that's age discrimination. I don't see how ordering that somehow games the system. Other people, in our party of 11, also felt disappointed by their meals. The food was serviceable, but KC, you're better than this.

So good! This is my favorite BBQ in KC. I think KC Joes has the best ribs especially. The fries are also pretty amazing.

Food was great! Here's how it works: you wait in line, order, get your food, and find a table (no saving tables allowed). While in line, you can grab a beer. We went on a Saturday night and had no trouble grabbing a table; the system seems to work with a great rotation. We got the two specials: both had ribs, sausage, and two sides. The only difference was that one came with pulled pork and the other came with brisket. Ribs were yummy fall off the bone with the perfect smoke. The fries are uber good; I bought some of the seasoning to bring home. The spicy slaw is unique and very tasty. Oh and the onion rings: divine!! The Boulevard Pale Ale was the perfect complement. Service was friendly and prompt.

I was initially put off by the "chain" look and feel of the place but the fear wasn't necessary. This is a revenue-hauling operation. Huge, fast moving lines, a simple pickup window operation, etc.. I can't imagine the money they are pulling in. That said: prices are lower than I would have expected. I had a Saturday night special of brisket, sausage and a couple of ribs plus 2 sides and toast for $14. HUGE portion of fries that were cooked great but unfortunately over-seasoned. VERY salty and I'm a salt lover. The sausage was nondescript but fine, the brisket was very good and the Ribs were *stupid* good. Deep flavor, not overly salty or spicy, just remarkable. I was tempted to just try to eat a rib bone *just in case* there was more flavor to be had there. Red beans and Rice as a side were surprisingly good. Their sauces were okay but nothing remarkable. Super sweet, super thick, etc. However, I found a bottle of Bubba's Carolina style sauce on the condiments table.. WOW was that stuff a revelation! PERFECT flavor compliment to the 'cue.

I recently took my first trip to Kansas City, I had heard about Oklahoma Joe's on TV and could not wait to give their smoke BBQ a try. I went with a two meat dinner, turkey and pulled pork, and my side was beans and rice. Now I understand why everyone raves about this place! The smoke on the meat along with their ability to keep it from getting too dry is really outstanding. The beans and rice and corn bread were tasty as well. The setting is super casual and very friendly to families and groups large and small. The space is open with lots of wood and decorations containing references to BBQ, I imagine a lot of birthday parties and other celebrations happen here. I would definitely recommend Oklahoma Joe's to anyone passing through the K.C. area looking for some authentic smoke BBQ!

I was at OJ's a couple of years ago and thought that it was excellent. I must have been really hungry after standing in line for an hour. At his Overland PArk location, I didn't have to wait in line for more than 15 minutes. That was great, but the food experience just didn't do anything for me. the ribs and chicken were just OK. The sides were average. The beans were nothing special. I didn't eat all of my food because I hate wasting calories on average or below food. I didn't see dessert on the menu. Maybe they had it and I was just already anticipating stopping by Jack Stacks' for my OMG delicious carrot cake. Wish that I had gone back there for dinner too.

Anthony Bourdain named this place as one of the thirteen places to eat before you die. It definitely did not disappoint! Best BBQ I've ever had! Tried the Ribs and Brisket Dinner with cole slaw. Fries were killer. Sauces were delicious! Cool ambiance. 5 stars isn't enough!

Kansas City is known for many things such as the Kansas City Royals, Chiefs and maybe none better than the tender, slow smoked barbeque that is a trademark of Kansas City style barbeque. In the upbeat city of Kansas City there are many local favorite restaurants, depending on whom you ask, you may receive answers such as a very historic Arthur Bryant's to a new on the scene Q39. Among these local favorites you will most likely hear the name Oklahoma Joe's', with a recent name change to Joe's Kansas City Barbeque. Sitting just over the state line on 47th street in Kansas City Kansas Oklahoma Joe's offers a unique experience all its own. Having lived in Kansas City my entire life I have never experienced this place that everyone around me raves about. Recently I had the privilege to go visit Oklahoma Joe's a classic Kansas City barbeque hotspot and finally after twenty-one years getting to experience it myself. As I pull open the door I smell the fresh aroma of the smoked meat that will soon be sitting on a plate in front of me. I stand there for a moment to glance over the easy to read and very descriptive menu offered to me. With plenty of choices to choose from I came to a conclusion that I was going to try the "Z-man sandwich". The Z-man sandwich comes with a tender slow smoked brisket, provolone cheese, topped with two onion rings all on a Kaiser roll with a side of fries. After waiting so long to try what Oklahoma Joe's had to offer I couldn't wait any longer to dive into this well anticipated sandwich. After I took the first bite I realized that I needed more of Oklahoma Joe's original sauce, which had been very lightly applied to the sandwich as it was prepared for me. The farther I get into the sandwich the more I realized that the smoky flavor, unique to Kansas City, was coming more from the sauce than it was the meat. One other thing that I noticed about my sandwich was that the tenderness of the meat could be because of how thinly sliced the meat was. However I still found the sandwich very satisfying. The seasoning that coated this mountain of fries sitting in front of me was like no other seasoning that I have tasted on fries before. When it came to the portions that I received with my order I found rather strange. The ratio didn't seem to go with one another. I had this huge mountain of fries but my sandwich was not to big at all. This could have been just the Z-man sandwich that I had ordered. Looking over the prices listed on the menu they were more than fair, however, in my opinion I would have preferred to see bigger portion sizes with them being relative to one another. Oklahoma Joe's still offers a unique experience unlike any other you would get in Kansas City. Even with these few, minor things I still got a positive experience and meal from Oklahoma Joe's. I will be seeing those doors and smelling that smoked meat as a walk through those doors once more. I would in fact recommend this Kansas City classic to anyone that plans on staying in or passing through this beautiful city.

I had read one of Anthony Bourdain's articles where he stated that KC Joe's (used to be Oklahoma Joe's) was one of the 13 places you should eat before you die. Hmmm, I thought there is one just around the corner of my house. That is indeed the BEST barbeque I have ever eaten in my life!!! If you are craving BBQ this is a must go to!!! The smokes taste, the juiciness of the meat, the tenderness...ohhh it melts like butter in your mouth!

Back in October, I made my first trip to the Kansas City area for the American Royal World Series of BBQ to cook with one of the teams there. With such a rich tradition of BBQ history and an overabundance of awesome BBQ joints, it was difficult to narrow my choices down to just two or three... for the most part. Hitting up Oklahoma Joe's was an easy decision for me. I went with a good friend of mine for dinner on an early Thursday evening to the Leawood location. The restaurant was busy but not overflowing with a long wait. After much debate (that consisted of... me: "What should I get?", friend: "Brisket Z-Man"), I went with the brisket Z-Man with onion rings and a small gumbo. I never quite understood the reason behind cutting the brisket so thin... but who cares? The brisket on the Z-Man was perfectly cooked! And I wasn't sure about the combination of cheese, onion rings, and brisket... but I was proven wrong! The sides? Just as delicious! The onion rings were perfectly crispy, while the gumbo was mighty tasty (and an acceptable substitution for authentic Louisiana gumbo). I only wish I had more time to spend out in the KC area, because I'm pretty sure I'd go broke at Oklahoma Joe's!

I met a customer nearby and mentioned that I never had KC BBQ. He said I had to try this place. I got to the parking lot a few minutes before the restaurant opened and there was already a line so I knew this would be good. I walked around the corner to the pick-up/carry out door and ordered two ribs. That's right, just two ribs (I had to get to the airport and didn't have time for more). I took the ribs back to my rental car and unwrapped the foil pouch. The ribs were huge, not suacy and smelled delicious. They tasted even better. They fell off the bone and there was nothing left but the bone. I usually like my BBQ saucy but these ribs didn't need it. I'd like to go back when I have more time and try some more food.

My friend was visiting from Vegas and was told, she should go here before going home. Now i've been to the one on 47th st and it was good but i've only been once. She ordered the half slab and beans. I ordered 3 ribs with ham and a side of fries. Her ribs were dry and so were mine. The texas toast looked like white bread cut at an angle. The beans were ok but sweet, i like hickory or smoked. The Night of the Living bbq sauce is my fave that's why i got fries to drown them in it and it tasted like that sauce was married with another one. Not spicy like when it comes from the jar. The only way those ribs could be better was if they had ketchup on them. -Do i get killed for that? We didn't finish anything but the ham, fries and pickles. If we wanted less than good bbq we woulda went to Zarda's, which i only get the salad bar there. :) Next time i'm at 119th i think i'll go elsewhere. Stay away from the ribs, at least on mondays. I was told i shoulda got the Z sandwich but who knows what that is, not me. I'm adding a pic. Didn't mean to get the girl in it but i had too. Lol

Holy delicious, Batman! While traveling for work I stopped by Oklahoma Joe's to see what all the fuss was about. In brief: the sauce was world class, the meats were cooked to perfection, and the fries, both in quality and portion size, were overwhelming. Food: [5/5] I picked up a two meat entree, a side of fries, and a fountain drink. The two meats were brisket and chicken. Both were stellar, smoked until deity level perfection, moist, and delicious. The fries come in a white paper serving bag that is roughly the size of Guam. As a pure Irishman, and fatty, this fulfilled and exceeded my expectations by far. And the house BBQ sauce - mind melting. In fact, it was so good, I ordered an entire gallon and had it shipped to Florida. I've now made addicts out of my family. Service: [5/5] From door to table was about 4 minutes, including ordering my food, getting my drink, and having my food ready and in hand. And that was with this place being packed to the brim on a weeknight. There was plenty of available, not-scrunched seating. This place deserves all of its accolades given to it and more. I actually look forward to visiting Kansas (who says that?) just to go back here again so that I gorge heartily and happily.

The food never disappoints; it's always tasty and fresh. The floor staff is helpful, and friendly Drawback: The lines at peak lunch or dinner times snake out the door, and down the side of the building. My suggestion is to eat a light lunch then go to an early dinner at OJ to avoid the long lines.

YUM! Last time we were in Kansas City we did not try their Bar-B-Que. I am cursing the BBQ gods as I write this. I loved every bit of my meal here - the beans, cole slaw, iced tea and pulled pork were outstanding. I loved the cafeteria style seating and casual atmosphere. I was at a convention where I finally met in real life some quilters I only knew from Twitter. (Who hasn't done that, am I right?) This was the perfect place to meet. Casual and friendly, some noise to cover awkward silences and terrific food. Plus we all paid our own bill as we went through, no fumbling with the bill and doing math. I hope I get back here to chow down again.

Joe's Kansas City Bar-Be-Cue, formerly Oklahoma Joe's, is definitely a Kansas City favorite. You might be thinking, what would a vegetarian like me eat at a BBQ joint? Well, Joe's KC actually offers a meat-free menu item, the portobello z-man, a sandwich with grilled strips of portobello mushrooms, topped with melted provolone cheese, and two onion rings. The sauce at Joe's KC is hands-down the best BBQ sauce I've ever had and it totally completes the sandwich. It's a lot of food, though, and can be pretty heavy - but it's BBQ, so honestly what else would you expect? I will let you know that you will never arrive at Joe's KC when it isn't busy. The lines are always long, so make sure to plan about a 20 to 40 minute wait time into your meals. But the lines are fine since the place is always lively. It's even better if you go with close friends! After you order, you can peek behind the counter and see the food being prepared right in front of you. The cooperation in the kitchen is amazing and nothing takes longer than about three minutes to be prepared. The prices are reasonable and the staff is friendly. They really keep the restaurant moving and make sure that tables are bused/cleaned immediately. Great dining experience! Would very much recommend to anyone in the KC area.

Classic KC que in a strip mall setting. I had the brisket and rib dinner. Both were delicious. Nice smoky flavor, but not over smoked with just the right amount of sauce. My only beef (pun intended) was that I usually like the brisket sliced a little thicker when I'm not having it as a sandwich. I say give Joe's a try - if you like classic KC que, you'll like Joe's Cheue`

Great food! The burnt ends are the BEST I've had in KC by far- it's not only the taste but the tenderness that is great. The ribs are delicious too, that's what my husband always gets. We always are sure to take our out of town guests here for dinner. The only thing I don't care for here is that it's cafeteria style, not table service, but that's only personal preference since I'm paranoid I'll drop my tray!

Excellent half rack pork ribs and baked beans here. The brisket was tender and good (though I prefer Jack Stack's which has more flavor) and the place is huge which is nice as they request patrons to order before finding a seat to keep the traffic flowing. I liked it all and will come back... It's very comfy with the booths, flat screens and yummy food. I can see why it's so popular! One personal pet peeve: at self-serve places like this where one orders at a counter, pays at the counter, gets one's own drinks, silverware, has to pick up own food when it is called at the counter, bus own table, and wrap up own food...I don't think patrons should feel obliged to tip - yes, there is a tip line on the receipt. After all, one doesn't tip at fast food places where we self serve the same way. It just confuses me where the environment seems like there will be table service, but it really is an upscale fast food BBQ place. Now, I have nothing against self serve establishments; I just don't enjoy feeling tricked into pre-paying for a service gratuity I won't receive- hence I felt Yelp-karma bound to share the sentiment... But now I know for next time (and so do you!)

Joe's KC BBQ, formerly Oklahoma Joe's, has the best vegetarian offering for BBQ lovers. As in, no other KC BBQ house has a vegetarian offering outside of salad and sides. Regardless, the portobello Z-Man, a vegetarian version of their trademark Z-Man, could stand on its own. It originated from a meatless Monday tradition. Now permanently on the menu, this is a sandwich I always eat anytime I visit home in KC. Joe's has amazing BBQ sauce. I prefer the normal sauce over the spicy sauce, but both are amazing with fries, onion rings, slaw, etc. The most recent visit for me was with a high school friend. Fries and onion rings are always enough to share between two people. The portobello Z-Man is delicious, and I'm not even a big mushroom guy. Onion ring, cheese, and grilled mushroom on a crispy yet soft bun with a trademark sauce that Air Force One stops in KC for? What more is there to ask for? I still have not figured out the difference between portobella and portobello. It's something that could easily be Google'd, but I'm old-fashioned and enjoy the wonders of not knowing. Yes, Barack Obama is a huge KC BBQ fan. This location is in the wealthier burbs of KC. It has a faster line than the original KC location (the one in a gas station), but the food is of the same quality. Full disclosure: I shamelessly own a Joe's t-shirt, but never wear it.

What can I say, though the name Oklahoma has been removed from the franchise, it is still some of the best BBQ you can get in the KC area. My first experiences with OK Joes was pre-Yelp, at the original location years ago. This weekend I made it back to KC and decided to try one of the now four locations and was pleased to find an actual restaurant with plenty of seating. If I had been a yelper some 6-7 years ago I would have given the other location a 5 on its own, so I have to get a little creative and award two bonus stars for this location, the first for simply having a convenient location and the second for the dedicated restaurant! The food is consistent from the original, hefty portions, amazing flavor, and some ridiculously good ribs! Definitely worth a shot if you like BBQ, and a (few) return trips to boot!

If you want BBQ in KC this is the place to go. Get the burnt ends and you won't regret it. Also like the beef brisket. Your going to leave very satisfied. I like this location because they are an operation that moves fast and your not sitting in a gas station. The lines can get long, but it is well worth the wait.

The Z-man brisket sandwich is one of the very best BBQ food items ever. Every single bite was perfection. Get there early to avoid a line. By 11:15 the line was out the door. We live in Denver. This is always a must stop on the way to Branson. The fries and onion rings are just ok to me but the sandwich is that good that it still gets a 5 every time.

Okay my 2 check-ins in one weekend should tell you something. Was brought here by a friend of mine on Friday evening to try some of the best BBQ KC has to offer. There is a reason this place is on Anthony Bourdain's 13 places to eat before you die. IT IS FANTASTIC! The location in Leawood is very unassuming. When you walk in you have to stand in line to order cafeteria style. Despite the long line that is usually out the door, service is very quick so don't be deterred. Once you order you pay at the end of the counter and typically within minutes your food is ready for you. Don't look for a seat, you'll miss your food. I decided on the Z-man sandwich which is their specialty. A beef brisket sandwich that was juicy and phenomenal. So phenomenal I had to have it a second day and it was still great! Consistent taste and juiciness. A side order of fries is generous so definitely share. I couldn't resist and ordered the 1/2 order of the burnt ends just to try it. Not as "burnt" as I'm used to but thick juicy bits of marbleized beef with a nice amount of fat. Now this place I believe is different than Oklahoma Joe's so you have to search "Joe's KC BBQ". Final Verdict: Love it!

I had my first burnt ends from Joe's tonight, and the boyfriend had his first Z-man. I called a to-go order at 4:10, and they said we could pick up at 4:20. I headed out the door, and arrived at 4:30. I paid for the burnt end dinner, Z-man, and an order of onion rings for just under $30. I waited about 10 minutes and headed home. Our meals were still warm by the time I arrived home. The burnt ends were definitely the best I've had in KC so far. I find their cole slaw and potato salad to both be pretty good, but not the best. The Z-man was awesome -- hype is now understood. The onion rings may have been the best I ever had. This Joe's location seems to be just as good as the original! A swankier, less-crowded version of the KCKS joint, but feels like a less memorable experience.

This location specifically has the art & science of bbq down. Joe's KC is delicious. The ribs and burnt ends are like pieces of heaven. The dirty rice is a fantastic side. The fries are addictive. This location is built perfectly. It keeps things moving, has plenty of seating, and even allows for a beer while you wait. You can't ask for more. Absolutely 5 stars and a KC gem.

I'm going to keep this review unusually short but you don't need to go on and on about this place they know what they doing. I hate to compare but since I have been in KC I have had Gates Barbecue which in fairness was a day old and Joe's being the second spot. Let me say in short I have had some good Barbecue in my time being a major foodie but Joe's got it, from the ambiance, setup, service, food especially. I had the brisket sandwich which was outstanding and not lacking at all on meat. I also had the fries which were fresh and had a nice crisp taste and a generous helping. The baked beans were not out the can and homemade very good actually inspired me to start making my own. Now a few people had the burnt ends special let me say this was outstanding and I liked the way they mix some chunks of brisket with the burnt ends. I also like the self serve to go area where they have condiments cups of barbecue sauce packed, plastic eating utensils, napkins and styrofoam containers etc. definitely a must try.

Atmosphere: BUSY! We went on a Saturday night and the line was pretty long but it moved quickly. I like the cafeteria style seating- kept it casual but it can get chaotic trying to grab a refill and moving through tables. Food: Z-Man: DELICIOUS. Can't wait to go back and eat another one. Ribs: Pretty good but not the best I've ever had. Smoked Chicken Gumbo: Flavorful and pretty delicious but I honestly just wanted to eat another Z-man. Spicy Slaw: Pretty good

So I am in town on business and decided to visit this place. I went with the rib and brisket with baked beans. First the ribs were good not great but very good. The brisket was some of the most tender and juiciest I have ever had. The last was the baked beans... WOW those were good with at least 3 types of beans and meat added. Overall it was a great place and would go back again.

I came here on the recommendation of the hotel front desk worker and I wasn't disappointed. When I walked in I was a bit confused and stood in line for ten minutes before I realized I was in the line for eating in and if I just wanted to carry out, then I needed to go to the other other side were there was no line. Once I figured that out, the guy working the carry out side was friendly and patient with me since I hadn't been there before. I went with the ribs and baked beans and they were both very good. The ribs had a good smokey flavor and were very tender. I would definitely come back here again.

We don't have much patience to wait in long lines for food, so this location an hour before closing was perfect for us. The rating above is for the chicken. That's right. Not the ribs, or the brisket, or the pulled pork, but the chicken, which was smoked to perfection. I'm talking dark meat here. My hubs ate 3/4 of a whole chicken almost by himself. He said this is one of the best chickens he's ever had, and he can grill up chicken really well. Being that I do eat pork, I had to try other items. It unfortunate that the three meats I listed above were all a touch dry...no where near the perfection of the chicken. I can't vouch for the flavors, b/c I don't eat bbq that much. But I do know that meats cooked low and slow properly should be not only fall off the bone, but moist. B/c I'm only a half hearted carnivore, I ordered the combo sandwich with pulled pork and brisket and added coleslaw. This way I can try both, without having to eat a full portion. But I couldn't leave without ordering the ribs, too. (I was supposed to only get 3 ribs, but they gave me 4). I left stuffed to the gills, but a little underwhelmed. I also ordered a separate side of fries. Again, what's with the hype? They were nothing by solid fries. The bbq beans were good and flavorful, perhaps an item that I'd order again. The red beans and rice will be a pass for next time. Service was lightning fast. I have to say they have this part down to an art form. I don't think I even waited 5 minutes before my order was called out. So for the incredible chicken and service, I've given 4 stars. The rest is passable.

I love Joe's! There. I said it. To me, Joe's Kansas City is everything right about Kansas City BBQ. The meat is always sweet, smoky, and tender. The fries are amazing and plentiful. And the sauce! Oh, the sauce! Don't get me started! It's the perfect combination of thick, sweet, tangy love with just enough of a spicy bite to keep you on your toes. In my personal opinion, Kansas City BBQ is the best BBQ out there. I have tried all types, Texas, Memphis, St. Louis, etc. Kansas City BBQ trumps them all. Also in my personal opinion, Joe's Kansas City is the best BBQ in the city. Therefore, Joe's is the best BBQ in the world. I have had Jack Stack, Arthur Bryant's, Gates, LC's and I keep coming back to Joe's. It is unbeatable! There are a few newer contenders like Slap's and Q39 I still will try, but I honestly doubt that anything will cool my love for Joe's. I talk them up to all my friends and family. And when they finally get to taste the smoky, meaty goodness, they too are singing Joe's praises. When my wife and I visit, I get the Ribs and Brisket meal with fries to split as the portions on the fries are quite large. My wife gets a Z-Man and loads it up with pickles and sauce. I have also had the full Ribs meal and the Cowboy special. The Cowboy special is similar to the Ribs and Brisket except you get 1 less rib and some sausage. Still very yummy! Every location in town is great and serves the same great food. This one is the newest site of the 3 and the one you'll find the shortest lines the most often. Of all my visits, I can only recall having to wait in long lines twice and those were on very heavy times like dinner on a Friday or Saturday. Go to Joe's Kansas City! You won't want to go anywhere else!

I came here on a thursday- line was long but it went by fairly quickly. Ribs were ok, kind of dry. Cole slaw side- average. The z Man sandwich is effing delicious. It's basically tender brisket with provolone cheese topped with onion rings. The combination is SO good!!! MUST GET and only ~8bucks. I would come back for this. SO GOOD!!!

I was really excited to try this place on a road trip. Stopped for dinner at 6pm. The line had about 20 parties ahead of us but moved quickly. My fiancé and I split a two meat tray (pulled pork and brisket) with baked beans and a 1/2 rack of ribs with spicy slaw. Honestly, I was let down. It was very disappointing because the pulled pork and Texas toast were cold. I loved the baked beans and though the pulled pork was cold, it was delicious. The brisket was my least favorite. Not a fan of the spicy slaw.

Great place, the line was huge, but don't let that scare you, it moves fast. Have a beer while waiting in line is a great way to pass the time. Ribs were the best I ever had! Seriously. The chicken is great. I didn't care for the saved turkey, just my preference. The Fries are great, don't spring for the onion rigs, nothing special. Disappointed no Mac n cheese, but you really don't feel cheated once you bite into the delicious BBQ.

Catered an event by Joes KC delivered in Lawrence. Delivered on time as promised, food was delish, Katie was awesome to work with for planning as our event grew to 315 people w rsvp. We had plenty of food. The crowd raved! Thank you Katie. Thank you Joes KC

The best BBQ in KC. The sides not so much - prefer Jack Stack beans and cheesy corn. We love the brisket and ribs. Sauce is the best in KC. They even offer a vegetarian Z-man now (although I'd never order it a nice option for vegetarians lol). Not sure about the new name - it will always be Okie Joe's to us!

Paint me impressed me! People talked this place up and it lived up to all the hype. This place has long lines but don't let that stop you because they go fast. I got the Ribs and Brisket and it was SOO GOOD! I love that portions are so generous here, too. Can't wait to come back to KC to try some stuff at this place!

  • Cassandra A.

How can anyone not love this place? Okay I could understand if you were a vegetarian or vegan. But there's not too many of those out in the midwest. This is a great place to take out of owners who need to experience the famous KC BBQ. I personally always get a pulled pork sandwich. You can't go wrong with any of the sides. Don't forget to get some local boulevard brewed beer to wash down your BBQ! The lines can be crazy long on a Friday for lunch or almost anytime on the weekends. But don't fret, the lines move fairly fast and there are always seats when you get your food.

Oh mannnn! Savoring that spicy sweet slow smoked KC brisket as it melts in my mouth. So tender and juicy you can cut it with a fork. Guaranteed to disappear faster than a Dairy Queen deep south snow cone on a hot August day, or gub'mnt accountabili-T. They really know how to do BBQ here....... Oh yeaahhhhh.

Man! This is probably a comment by many, but I was pretty impressed! We went to the one in Overland, KS and not the "original one". My aunt and I came here around 11:30 and within an hour it was packed! I ordered a two meat combo platter with potato salad being my side. In addition, we ordered the Z-man with a side of french fries. I would say the brisket alone wasn't anything to rave about (I usually like my brisket sliced fairly thick), and the ribs were moist but didn't fall off the bone. I would say the z-man sandwich was so good!! I still think about it now. Slightly dense bread, thinly sliced brisket, mozzarella cheese, onion ring, and some BBQ sauce. Paired up so well! Fries had the skin on them and fried to crisp perfection. I want one now writing this review!

Oklahoma Joe's is quite possibly the best barbecue on earth. Everything is freaking delicious. You quite honestly can't go wrong. The ribs are always meaty, perfectly cooked and delicious. The brisket is scrumptious. The sausage great. Turkey awesome. Seriously, it's all good. The only way you can screw up is by not going there. If they have the burnt end special available, get it! Oh, and the fries are some of the absolute best ever. So good and addictive. This location is bigger and cleaner than the original gas station location (though you should go there sometime just to experience it once) and the food is just as good. This place, like the other locations will get totally busy at regular meal times but this once has plenty of seating usually, so that helps. I'd still highly recommend calling in an order and picking it up if that works for you. Why wait for the awesome delicious food if you don't have to?! I could go into fine detail about the food or the cleanliness of the restaurant and all that but it doesn't really matter. Just know that this place is ALWAYS on lists of the best BBQ on earth and so you should just go and try it for yourself and have faith that it is going to be great no matter what my review says about anything.

I've never had a bad experience at any of the three Joe's KC locations. Food is always top notch, consistent, and its my go to BBQ place. When guests come in town, this is where I take them. I actually like the way this one is laid out the best. Plenty of seating, and it was designed to handle a long line of people waiting. I typically get the Z-Man or Burnt Ends if they are available. If I had my choice of a "last meal", Joe's Burnt Ends would take the top spot. They've been described as "meat candy", and I'd agree with that. Joe's is so good, I once met some friends at the gas station location for lunch, and then met a different group of friends at the Olathe location for dinner. If I had only worked in the Leawood location somehow, it probably would have been the best day of my life.

I sporadically crave BBQ. We were in the area, though I haven't been a fan of the original location the last few times, this location restored my faith in Joe's BBQ. The no holding tables rule is in affect at this location too. I usually panic because I worry we won't have a table. But it was nice to have the long line move right along. With relief, I saw plenty of seating in the dining room while in line. This location defnitely has the seating the original lacks. I had the ribs and potato salad. I don't remember the last time I have had fresh (non carryout) Joe's. The serving of potato salad was ample; definitely more than carryout. The ribs were tasty, juicy with a good bark. The Saturday special was the burnt ends platter which my husband had. I tried one of my husband's burnt ends...delicious! As always, I dipped a few bites of my Texas toast in the hottest sauce. So darn good! The dining room is kept immaculate and all the employees were friendly. My husband and I agreed if this location was closer we would dine here more often.

Overall a very positive impression. The line was out the door at 2 pm, well after a typical lunch rush, so I had a feeling it was going to be phenomenal. I wasn't wrong. The burnt ends were the true star of the show. Incredible marbling and tenderness, deep smoky flavor, and they were cut into these perfectly sized one-inch chunks that were so easy to dip into a bit of BBQ sauce and pop into my mouth. My group ordered a bit of everything and shared amongst ourselves. The ribs were a solid second place. Tender but firm. Not falling off the bones but still easy to enjoy. The brisket was pretty good but could have been more tender. It had a nice smoky flavor but fell a bit short of my expectations, given the first two meats I tried. The pulled pork was in last place...the flavor was too mild (as in I could barely taste it at all) and too dry for me to eat. In my opinion there was a wide range of options, some much better than others. A nice touch were the hot seasoned fries. Usually a place that has such a strong focus on meat has a hard time doing good sides. I would love to see what they could do with some mac and cheese. Final tip: make sure you know exactly what you want when standing in line. Once you're at the counter, locals will bite your head off if you are indecisive or talk too slowly. ;)

Joe's serves their world famous BBQ cafeteria style. The limited menu is mostly ala carte. Pros - Brisket (five star), BBQ sauce Cons - Bun served not warm (should be toasted), limited bar. I did not care for the Bbq beans, however not enough to list it as a con. The decor is new and kept clean. They do have staff on the floor keeping the tables clear since they are geared to get folks in and out the door as it can get very busy. Yes I will be coming back to try other items on the menu.

Great burnt ends, not tough but very tender. Creamy slaw was so-so. Not much flavor in slaw.

Great pulled pork. Quick service. Large portions and very tender. Had the pulled pork sandwich and it melted in my mouth. Very noisy and very busy but the service was pretty fast considering the amount of people eating

Horrible customer service... I personally believe that a terrible experience with their managers and general manager is enough for me to never eat there again. Remember it doesn't matter if you are disabled or have children etc. don't sit down until you have food!!! Otherwise a very nasty manager will come out argue and belittle you until you leave! Talked to the general manager afterwards and he wasn't bothered with the fashion in which the situation was handled. Very poorly run chain with abusive staff.

I must say, this is the best BBQ my wife and I have had in Kansas City so far and we've tried a lot of places. You just can't beat Joes KC (Oklahoma Joe's) and the best part about this new location is that you get the same killer BBQ but, unlike their original location, the wait is never too long and you can always find an open table or booth. I'd recommend anything on their menu but I'm especially fond of their Z-Man or pulled-pork sandwiches. They also have a little selection of beer to choose from if you're in the mood for a cold one to wash down their amazing BBQ. It has a fun, casual atmosphere and is never empty (which speaks to how good the food is). Great place for lunch, quick dinners with family, a casual dinner date, take out, or you can call ahead of time to order for pickup.

Was it a bad night or is this the way it is all the time? Pulled Pork was very dry without adding some sauce to it and some slaw to mask the dryness. Also could have put more meat in the sandwich. Ribs were also very dry, over-cooked to the point that the little cartilage ends got in my mouth, hard to chew and had to pick it out of my mouth with my fingers. They were also over-seasoned so much so that left the meat itself tasteless. Do not see how this place got such glowing reviews. North Carolina and Oklahoma must think folks in Kansas are living on a different planet.

The wait to get into this place is so with it. 15m to 3hrs... It doesn't matter. The end result and entire process is amazing. Burnt ends!!!! Yum. I ordered a half slab of ribs too. I just couldn't decide. The spicy slaw could've been spicier. The meat plates made up for that and then some. Night of the dead sauce is the bomb!!! Wish I lived closer. Yum yum and hell yes!!!

We always make it back to Oklahoma Joe's when we're in the area! It's my favorite BBQ place, and is as good as it gets whether you go to the original restaurant or one of the others opened in different parts of town. My favorites are the Z-Man or Burnt Ends (if they're not sold out!). Don't forget the amazing onion rings!

Awesome! Just Awesome! Z Man with a side of beans = best lunch in Kansas City! Also, the whole smoked turkey I bought for Thanksgiving was incredible and the star of my dinner in Van Buren, AR! Spreadin Joe's love everywhere I go!

I really like the new set up. Always hits the spot when i'm craving BBQ and I consider myself a BBQ snob. But the sides could use a little work, the patato salad and baked beans were pretty weak and not tasty, but you live and learn and you will not find better BBQ in the Town Center Area.

Get here early or expect to wait in line! Totally worth the wait. Ribs were really moist and meat practically fell off the bone. I had the Z-Men Sandwich which was also delicious. Highly recommend the onion rings and rice. Great service and fun atmosphere.

I am new to KC (2 weeks) and on the hunt for the best BBQ in town. A week after eating at the gas station location of Joe's my family and I ventured to Leawood. The food was awesome. All first timers should be required to order the Z Man. We also had burnt ends and pork spare ribs. My kids went simple with hot dogs and loved them. This is a newer family friendly location, very clean and spacious. We arrived at 5 pm, by the time we left the line was literally out the door. If you have small kids like us, get their early! Side selection could be a bit more, but what we had was delicious. Joe's KC BBQ does not disappoint.

It was our first time at Joe's and I'd come back, just not soon. We picked it on a whim and chose our food based on reviews. I got a Z-man and fries and my husband got the ribs and pulled pork with dirty rice. My sandwich was tasty and filling, but I didn't care for the fries. They were a little dry. My husband lived the pulled pork, it was tender. But said the ribs had too much fat. If you like spicy...real spicy, the dirty rice is right up your alley! Overall, I'd go back and skip the fries, just order sandwiches! Line was long but moved very quickly for a Friday night.

  • Matt C.

Oklahoma Joe's is always a great local place to eat. I love their chicken Z-man, and their rubs are amazing. The carry-out service in the Leawood location is fast. If you go during the evening, expect a wait on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and any time there is any sort of event in town. If you come to Kansas City, make sure to check out one of their locations. The one off Mission is a good bet for the authentic Okie Joe's experience!

Don't waste your time going anywhere else. This is from a girl who loves BBQ so much, I once told a date to turn the car around and take me home before we even got to the movie theater because he said he didn't like BBQ. Joe's KC is hands down, the BEST.

Your typical OK Joes, but I had not been to this location since I live right by the 119th/Strang Line spot. The food is the same - quite awesome. It's definitely in my Top 3 of KC BBQ, though I can't fault anyone who puts it as #1, as I have at times. Burnt Ends are something that I wish they had every day, but alas only 2-3 times a week (and I believe only once at dinner (Wednesday?)). That being said, the last two times I've had their burnt ends, they left me somewhat underwhelmed compared to previous times. I do hope that's not a trend. Anywho, this place seems a bit bigger than the 119th/Strang Line location, but perhaps it just has a better layout. It's still nice, new and clean. The people are friendly. They get you your food pretty quick considering how busy they are. Parking is plentiful, though you may have to walk a slight way if it gets really busy.

Just the best BBQ in KC. And since KC has the best bbq in the world, I guess that means this place is #1. As in the entire Universe. "Why?" you might ask. "Well have you eaten there?" would be my incredulous reply. "Have you tried the Z-man? You know the sandwich with the tender smoked brisket, melted provolone cheese and onion rings." "And have you had those sweetly flavorful & smokey, tender, meaty ribs?" If you're saying "no" softly to yourself in a meekly shameful voice as you read this, then I can't help you. You can only help yourself. You know what needs to be done.

Came here while visiting for work. Very tasty pulled pork sandwhich and french fries. Added the spicy BBQ sauce. Not the best BBQ i've ever had, but it was pretty good stuff and a pretty cheap

I think it's called Joe's Kansas City as of Friday, but regardless, I go all the time. I am a firm believer that there is no such thing as the best BBQ restaurant in Kansas City. I say this because I think each place is best at something different. Joe Kansas City is best at pulled pork, it's so good. I have never had a bad experience when I order it and it is my go to. The line seems long sometimes but they know what they are doing and they get you in and out pretty quick, so don't let it intimidate you.

I've had Oklahoma Joe's on numerous occasions and it's amazing!! I've never sat down to eat here, it's always been in a catered situation but it's still wonderful none the less. The pulled pork and the brisket are my two personal favorites, while people I work with go to town on the ribs. They cook everything to order so it comes out hot and moist. Today, I picked it up and took it back to work for an end of program event and you could smell it from down the hallway. I will warn you though, that the line at the restaurant can get long, especially around the lunch rush, but this place is an absolute must for KC BBQ

Went for lunch based on reviews and was very happy I did. Great BBQ pork sandwich, couple of good sauce choices at table. Reasonably priced and good BBQ. If you want a sit down BBQ with full service, this is not for you--line starts when you go in an you order, get food and then find a table. Sandwich and sides are worth it!

  • Gene K.

Stood in a really, really long line...sold beer while in line. Got the pork ribs/brisket and a side of beans...ribs were good, not close to fall off the bone, but ok flavor, meaty/ brisket was ok, not that tender..best part of the meal were the beans...great flavor, had chunks of meat...

  • Banen C.

If there's a line, I promise you it's worth the wait. The Boulevard beer stand is a nice touch to keep the line entertaining. I usually order the Z-Man sandwich and a side of chicken gumbo. Don't waste your time on the baked beans. Get onion rings or something like that. A lot of people try the baked beans and decide they don't like OJ's. The beans just aren't good. I don't know if there's a better way to describe that. ANYWAYS - If you want to leave with a happy tummy, get the Z-Man. At least try it once. I crave it way too often.

I'm from Oregon. We have lots of Q joints up there and I frequent them. This place is Q on steroids! The BBQ smoke hits you immediately when you pull into the parking lot. I had ribs with brisket with spicy slaw and beans. This may be the best BBQ I've ever had. I'm not kidding. The brisket was perfect. Moist and flavorful. The ribs were perfection. Nice smoky flavor. Slaw had a nice vinegary slaw flavor with a pleasant afterburner. Service was friendly and quick, atmosphere was excellent, and this is what a BBQ restaurant is supposed to be. I'll be back.

Everything I had was excellent, though nothing there is as unique as gates or Bryant's sauces. Plus the wait is unbelievable, which is why I haven't been back.

Pros: great beer selection, amazing Z-man sandwich, huge portions, great set up with order at counter - get food - then find a table, delicious sides (beans, coleslaw), no line as we went around 5pm on a Monday Cons: none

  • Amber H.

Glad we ordered TO-GO... the ridiculous line of people let me know right off I was not going to be let down. We got the Z-man sandwich and it was delicious (even cold). The order of fries were large enough to feed a minimum of 2 people but possibly 3. Definitely wouldn't have gotten one for each of us. All and all, a great place to eat, friendly service, and appeared clean although we were only in to pick up.

Best BBQ in Kansas City, neh, the World! I love this place. In fact, just writing this review has inspired me to go get it for lunch today. $hit I gotta go before the line forms! BRB..... Phew, made it! Seriously, get the Z-man sandwich (briskit, melted provolone cheese, and an onion ring) with fries and your day is instantly better. They also have my favorite ribs and don't get me started on the burnt ends! I believe burnt ends are only available Monday and Friday, but don't quote me (call and ask them). If you haven't eaten here, then you are SERIOUSLY missing out. Go! Eat! Be happy!

  • Corie C.

There is a reason this was voted as a top restaurant to eat at before you die. Get the chicken Z-man. It's AMAZING!!! The chicken is super tender with a delicious smoky taste and they add a chipotle mayo, provolone, and an onion ring. The fries have the best seasoning salt on them and are truly addictive. I ordered a turkey from them for Thanksgiving and it was the hit of the dinner. So tender, juicy, and flavorful and bonus-it freed up my oven for other stuff. BEST decision I ever made as far as entertaining goes and it was very reasonably priced. You have to be on the ball because they only have a limited number of them.

    (5)
  • Julie B.

Portabella z man is AMAZING! Mushrooms (small ones in sauce do not a slimy giant cap) with cheese, spicy mayo, and onion rings - one of the only BBQ places in KC to have a vegetarian option thats more than just sides and they nailed it!

  • Joel C.

When I heard my favorite BBQ joint in KC was opening another location in Leawood - I knew I had to check it out....and it didn't disappoint. It's the same great food, with more room, and the option drink beer while in line! Could it get any better? I ordered my standard smokie joe and fries - which I've had multiple times at the original location and in Olathe. Some may claim it doesn't taste as good as the KCK location, but I couldn't tell the difference. Positives: -Best BBQ in KC in my book -Bigger restaurant with more parking -Order and drink beer while waiting in line! Negatives: -None, more OK Joes is always a good thing! Oklahoma Joes only solidifies their place at the top of KC BBQ with the addition of this location. Can't wait to go again...

There are so many Barbecue restaurants in KC -- but being from KC, I think it's fitting my first ever review on Yelp is about a Barbecue joint. This location of Oklahoma Joe's is in Leawood, Kansas -- in the heart of upper-class Johnson County. The restaurant, however, once you step inside, retains a down-home feel that is refreshing in this area. I visited on a busy Saturday night, so expected a wait -- the line was long, but actually, the wait was very minimal!!!! The line moved at a consistent pace, and nobody (well, except one patron) was grumbling about the wait -- cause there was none!!! I chose the Carolina Pork Sandwich, which comes with a side of spicy cole slaw, and a side of fries. First, the sandwich: the pork was a very mild tasting pork flavor, moist & tasty. The cole slaw was dressed with a very mild, tangy sauce ... combined together, a sandwich that lasted about 1 minute on my plate! The barbecue is fantastic (can't wait to try the ribs on a future visit!) ... but oh my!!!!!! Their french fries are KILLER!!!!!! Seasoned with a salt/spice mix that adheres nicely to almost each fry you place in your mouth --- a truly magnificent taste each bite you take! I requested the "hot" barbecue sauce to accompany my meal (ideal for dipping the semi-fat fries) ... perfect amount of "heat", along with the ideal barbecue flavor that is Oklahoma Joe's!!!!!! For as long as the line was, the service was spot-on, taking orders quickly, accurately, and very nicely, and my order was up way quicker than I thought it was going to be! Huge menu on the wall is easily read, so making up your mind is NOT a problem here. For those that care, Pepsi is the cola choice here, but local Boulevard beers are also available for purchase. I plan on returning for a sit-down experience, so will update my review then -- but totally expect a repeat STELLAR visit, with exceptional service & culinary barbecue delights!!!!

Loved Oklahoma Joe's! Great BBQ, brisket, and beans. I like not having to tip as well! Everything was clean and delicious. If you're looking for great barbeque look no further than Oklahoma Joe's.

We used the walk up window for our dinner tonight at the Leawood location. Busy is great for the restaurant, but a drag for the customers. Other than that, it was Barbeque. Tasty but not rll the eyes in the back of my head good. I only saw two sauces and was thankful that they weren't sweet. The original was close to "Stubbs original", a texas sauce. The spicy was one og=f the hottest BBQ sauces I have ever had and I loved it. Not for the faint of heart however. It made my wife say, "Nooo!"

I've often shunned the Olathe OK Joe's. "You have to go the gas station," I've said. And it's still true. But the opening of the Leawood location allowed me to enjoy a Z-Man at just a 15-minute drive and a 5-minute wait. No line out the door. They even have a special "pick-up" window. Sorry, I don't need something to be inconvenient to be authentic. This location has a damned patio. I don't often revel in JoCo restaurants, but this is definitely one of those times.

Seriously, this place is awesome! Went here while visiting family and had an awesome meal! I ordered the Z-Man sandwich and it was delicious. The BBQ sauce is amazing and the spicy BBQ sauce is just as good. People are friendly, service was great and I can not wait to go back!

On principle alone, I have insisted on only eating at the original OK Joe's KC location (47th street, gas station). However, when we rolled up to that location and saw the longest line yet (to the end of the building!), we decided it was time to take a risk...and try one of the satellite locations. Huge risk (dripping sarcasm)! This location is shiny and new, with a big parking lot and a larger dining area, yet both were pretty full. Yes, there was a line, but much like the homes and lawns in this area, people were spaced out and the line moved very quickly. Within 10-15 minutes we were sitting down with our piping hot food. Most staff were friendly and accommodating. My biggest concern was "will it taste the same." I would say it 90-99% tastes the same. I'm sure it was all in my head, but the fries were a little different (less seasoning) and the ribs weren't quite as amazing. I felt like the smoke ring was either deeper or more dispersed (if that's possible), and perhaps this made it taste less than 100% good. However, don't get me wrong, it's still amazing. I will continue to prefer the other location with its well seasoned smokers and employees, but when in a crunch, I would be happy to go to their new location. In case you don't know what to get, here are the highlights in my humble opinion: 1. RIBS mmmm... 2. French fries 3. Pulled pork 4. Smokie Joe 5. Gumbo

I find it funny reading the reviews of people who gave it a three or less... "There's no place to sit" and "it's a long wait" That means the food is superb, folks. If anyone rates this place below a four, ignore them.

    (5)
  • Scott F.

The Z-man sandwich is very good: yelp.com/biz_photos/okla… Great contrast between the crunchy onion rings and the BBQ meat. But, it's not as good as the hype. It wasn't a life-ending experience. I prefer the burnt ends sandwich.

Read the reviews about the Z-MAN and fries. It was amazing! I would get it again in a heartbeat. The sweet tea was perfect. Great service all around. Will be back again soon!

Excellent local BBQ. Great, smokey flavor in every bite- good options in pork, chicken, and beef. The ribs are superb- and the burnt ends are great when available (they're special item). The sides are good, not great. Beans aren't as good as Jack Stack in my opinion. The fries are yummy- crispy with a hint of spicy salt. I've heard the dirty rice is good with bits of sausage in it but I've yet to try it. Be prepared to wait- this is counter service restaurant. You'll likely wait in a long line to make your order then panic to find an empty seat if you're dining in. The new location seems to be a little bigger but same process. They do serve beer and wine here, no alcohol. They have a decent selection of microbrews to taste. Prices are right- take the whole family for low cost. This place is clean, open and gives plenty of space for large groups and kids.

I called in for a to-go order because I keep reading about the lines. When I called in they said come back in 10 mins. I ordered the 3 ribs, 1 meat dinner, and 1 side. They were running a special I got to choose 1 more side. Cool! the ribs were melt in your mouth good, the pulled pork was ok, the rice & red beans were ok, but the french fries kicked butt. The texas toast was inhaled! The BBQ was excellent.

We had a Z-Man and Hog Heaven plus Fries and rings. Short line on a Saturday afternoon. This was my son's first time to OK Joes. He was very happy. Now I need to get him to Jack Stack before he goes back to Chicago.

Does Oklahoma Joe's really need another review? Couldn't we just link to Anthony Bourdain listing it as a place to eat before you die, and leave it at that? Rhetorical question, I guess. And so I write this review not just to pile on, but to offer forth what is sure to be an unpopular recommendation. Don't order the Z-Man. Is it one of the best sandwiches you'll ever eat? Without a doubt. But there is a lot going on. Smoked provelone. Sauce. Onion rings. Oh, and the brisket. Instead, I would offer that you should focus on the meat. Pulled pork. Just brisket. Ribs. Oh lord, the ribs. This sandwich doesn't need the extras. They're great. They add to the overall experience. But this meat deserves focus. As for the location, some might discount my opinion because I have never been to the 47th Street version. If it's that much better... I should be floating on a cloud after eating there. Because the Leawood and Olathe locations are outstanding. Just go. And remember. Meat. Focus.

Awesome. I had a hankerin' for chicken BBQ and these guys delivered! The gumbo was spiced just right and the chicken was excellent. Put on some spicy BBQ sauce and it was perfect. Onion rings were generous and just right -- not too much batter like other places often have and worked great with the spicy BBQ sauce as well. Will definitely go back when I'm back in town.

I have been to the original and it was satisfying, but I'm not a huge bbq person.....mainly because I am a chick. Anyway, on this particular day, bbq sounded good. Although we arrived about 2 pm on a Saturday, the line snaked to the front door. It moved pretty quickly and we were ordering within 20 minutes. Just like the other location, you are not allowed to take a table until you get your food. I noticed several groups had figured out a work around. They just bring the oldest person in their family and use them as a table placeholder and no one is going to say anything. Yeah, I am on to you! What old lady wants to gnaw on a bbq rib with a full set of falsies? Poor grandma. I don't know what it was about this day, but the bbq at this location really hit the spot. The fries were so hot I could barely eat them. The pop was super bubbly and my pulled pork was extra tangy. The stars aligned and I really enjoyed my meal. Plus, the layout at this location makes sense and the seating is ample.

Best BBQ in KC? Really? You need to step it up KC. This is the second time I've had bad BBQ in KC. I had the Z man sandwich and fries. The sauce is smoky, which I like, but that's all you can taste. The brisket on the sandwich was bland and had ZERO flavor to the meat. I mean, it wasn't bad, I just wasn't good. I felt like I was consuming an arby's roast beef sandwich!! Seems like the only good joints are the small Mom and Pop places. Roadkill Grill in vegas and Lil' Mickey's in St Louis are the BEST places for BBQ in the US that I've ever had. Oklahoma Joes was a joke..

  • Trey H.

Z-man Sandwich is the lunch choice!!!!! Great beans, of a Bean medley... Burnt Ends!!!! Would probably have to give them just the 3 stars as my heart truly lies with Burnco, Inc. in tulsa, down by TU. This place has a great sandwich, and really decent ribs.. I would say if you are over by Basspro and need a place for some good lunch or dinner, this will fit the bill!

  • Desiree R.

I did not have a good experience with my family at Oklahoma Joes and I will never go back. First of all, we stood in line for one hour during the lunch hour. Then when we finally got our food, it was just bland and mediocre. By the time we sat down and got our food, we were worn out from standing so long. Then we were all cramped at a small table with a roll of paper towels as the center piece. This paper towel roll turned me off as it reminded me of a roll of toilet paper and was not in the least bit appetizing. My dad reached for the barbecue sauce and accidentally knocked over his drink all over the table and floor and there was nobody available to help us clean it up. I helped clean it up and then we found a bus boy and asked for his help. It was a pretty miserable experience and I will never go back.

So happy they opened a Leawood location! KC is known for their barbeque, but this place is the clear winner in my book, hands down. It's priced well and you'll leave stuffed. If there's a line when you're there, it does move fairly quickly. This place has a little more seating than the other locations, which is nice. Pulled pork is their specialty, but I've had the turkey and chicken too -- all of their meats are so tender they just melt in your mouth. The sandwiches are awesome, but my favorite splurge is the rib dinner ... BBQ heaven!

  • Midwest M.

The best in KC area hands down. Wish they had a location North of the river !

    (5)
  • Brian R.

Four stars because the meat is great and the service for a counter order and sit place is pretty good too. Sides are it's Achilles heel. The potatoes in the potato salad drowned in mayo. I would have used an onion ring as a life preserver but the onion rings were a limp greasy mass that couldn't save themselves. The spicy cole slaw is spicy but not flavorful. The best thing we had was the chopped beef/pork sandwich which rocked. Meat lives up to my idol Anthony Bourdain's praise but they need to pick up their overall game at this franchise

Delicious and friendly!! Line looks long when you get there, but it moves fast and gives you time to read their menu.

we had a really off night I guess last night. We got there about 6:15 pm and the place wasn't busy but our food was cold. We asked for fresh extra crispy French fries and the manager was very rude to my friend who is from out of town trying them for the first time. Last night was the rib special and the ribs were lukewarm the manager said she never served not hot food well they did last night. I think I'll stick with the Oklahoma Joe's in Olathe

I have been to many BBQ places in KC. From the nice restaurants to the product being wrapped in newspaper. OK Joes is absolutely one of the best I have ever been to. The best beef and best ribs with no doubt. They take call in orders. If you get there at prime time for lunch you will be standing in a line; however it is worth the wait and the line moves quickly. My favorite item for lunch is the Carolina Pulled Pork Sandwich. Dinner have to go with ribs

Second time at OK Joe's, first at this location. Arrived at around 11:30 am on a Wednesday, and ordered at the counter within 3 minutes. During our meal the line increased significantly, wrapping around outside the door. We got there just in time. You place your order then walk down the line to pay, and after filling my drink cup my order was ready. Had my usual - ribs, slaw and baked beans. The beans were unique, very peppery and very good. Slaw was above average. The ribs...holy smokes. The most amazing rub - sweet and spicy. They fell right off the bone, which usually means they're overcooked, but they were amazingly tender and flavorful. Fast service, AMAZING ribs, top tier baked beans. In my opinion the best BBQ in KC.

The food was excellent as usual. I am giving it three stars because of the lack of courtesy employees. After we ordered are food, the cashier was less than patient in helping us with the drinks. The place ran out of sweet tea at the beginning of the rush time. I asked her if they were getting some more and she answered with " she will get to it soon". After fifteen minutes, they replaced the tea. This was about the end of our meal. In addition, the cleaning staff used the same gloves to clean tables and put up the clean silverware.... I think this was an isolated occurrence and would recommend it to anyone they do have the best BBQ. I forgot to mention we drove from Colorado to eat here!

New sexy location, same sexy ribs (and everything else....)! Eat up!

  • James K.

Not much to add to other reviews, but my review would easily be 5 stars if all of my food was hot & fresh, but some items on my combo platter were lukewarm at best.... honestly, I would make this 4 1/2 stars if I could select it, because despite the temperature issue this was by far the best barbecue I have ever had. The ribs were amazing! They were very meaty, and extremely tender.

  • Alexander F.

The BBQ here is pretty good. I tried the ribs and I would say it was avarage.

  • James R.

Really as good as it gets. Yet to have any item I wouldnt get again whether it be the carolina pork sandwich, ribs, or the go to Z-Man. They have an amazing no beans chili that is very hearty and full of flavor. A side order of fries or rings is big enought for 2 adults so beware! The wait can be a bit of an issue but if you are from out of town and their isnt a line out the door you have to stop.

    (5)
  • Kate N.

Love this place! I had the Z-man sandwich which is what I always get, can't mess with perfection! (Although this visit they might've put a little more brisket on the sandwich as the bun to filling ratio was a little heavy on the bun.). My husband had the rib & brisket dinner with a side of fries (we shared the fries)...he cleared his plate. The place was hopping but the staff was doing a great job keeping pace & the dining area was clean. We will be back!!

What's not to like, a new Ok Joe's 5 minutes from my office and 5 minutes from home. This could get dangerous... To my waistline! I've stopped in a few times and I've found that while there is always a line out the door for the "Dine In" counter, the "Carry-Out" counter is always open. I've started to take my orders to go rather than wait for an hour in line then attempt to find an open table. The Pulled Pork is the specialty here, hands down the best in KC. The Ribs, Brisket and other meats are good but you can find equal or better offerings in several other BBQ joints around KC. I would always choose Jack Stack for brisket and ribs over OK Joes. On the flip side, I would never order Pulled Pork at Jack Stack. Is OK Joe's overrated? Of course, how could it not be with the amount of national publicity!?! That said, OK Joe's is still great BBQ...

  • Rebecca W.

Impressed! I've loved their BBQ before but with recently told I have to go gluten free I look much harder at who is preparing my meal. I asked for my meal with no toast and gluten free. He turned to the girl about to make my meal and told her gluten free and to change her gloves. She did and proceeded to care for my plate down the line. It's great food ... And fantastic that they have allergen processes in place.

After several other well known BBQ joints this one came out above all. Glad we ended our tour here. Pulled pork and ribs were amazing and fries with "5-guys"-like seasoning were scrumptious!

Knew I was at the right spot! Dunno why I snubbed trying OK Joes when I lived in KC but I sure do miss the opportunity and was going to make sure to savor this experience! It was barely 11am and the place was packed! So glad they took over the TGIFridays location. Order the ribs and brisket platter with drink for $16.93 out the door price. 3 large pork ribs with lots of smoke ring and bark. Thick smoky brisket beans, and several slices of beef brisket. A big slice of buttery Texas toast. A++ Best meal to date!

There are a lot of choices for Bar-B-Que in and around Kansas City, but Joe's Kansas City Bar-B-Que (formerly Oklahoma Joe's) is, in my humble opinion, THE BEST! But don't take my word for it. Go to one of their locations and see the line out the door, even in really cold nasty weather! People don't do that for mediocre food. MmmmMmmmMmmm Think I'll head over there for lunch right now!

    (5)
  • Jamie L.

Best of the best - everyone has said it all on here, so I won't go on and on. I prefer to get carryout from OK Joe's, as the line is killer. But it's worth it. Especially on burnt end days.

    (5)
  • Dave F.

Z Man sandwich is perhaps the best brisket, ever. The BBQ burnt ends are insane. This casual BBQ spot is the old school, stand-in line and order cafeteria style restaurant. Prices are very reasonable. The half chicken is moist and wonderful. Boulevard on tap along with a wide selection of non-vegan options offer a wonderful carnivore experience for all!

Oklahoma Joe's and their Kansas City BBQ has ruined all other BBQ for me. haha. I came to KC on a business trip and my coworkers (who were local) decided to take me here. Man, oh, man. The smoked chicken Z-Man was out of this world. Like seriously the best sandwich I've ever eaten. The onion rings, the gooey cheese, the smoked pulled chicken and of course their smoky sweet barbecue sauce. Mmmm, I wish Nashville had one. haha. If I ever make it back to Kansas City, this is where I'm eating first!

Best gumbo in town, and I'm Cajun so I can vouch for it. But be prepared for a line, it's always packed at Oklahoma Joe's!

  • Mike M.

BBQ should be smelled long before you reach the front door of a honest to goodness real BBQ joint. And despite this location's squeaky clean surrounding in Leawood, you know it's the real deal as soon as you step out of your car and smell the smokey goodness that's just past the front door. I came after the lunch rush, but I was impressed that they designed this place knowing that there would regularly be long lines for their awesome Q. It's set up like a ride at Disney with a space for the line along the outside line wandering up to the counter for ordering. Good move! All the good reviews are correct. Food is a great as at the gas station, but there's no beating the gas station location for the whole experience. This feels like a counter service Smokey Bones with better food, but I'm still a big fan.

Nothing short of spectacular every time I go. Obviously the Z man is incredible but maybe the most underrated burnt ends in KC. Wish they had them every day

I have eaten here several times since it opened in its Hawthorn Plaza location. The line is almost always out the door, but it moves quickly. I love their seasoned fries, and the z-man sandwich is hard to beat! The smoked turkey sandwich is also one of my favorites. If you have never been here, the single fry order is a lot of fries! Also, you have to order at the first "window" and pay at the second. That threw me off on my first visit. Their prices are reasonable for the amount of food. If you ask they will even give you a to go cup when you are done eating, so you can take your drink with you. When I have friends or family in town from out of state, I love to take them here for a taste of KC. The only place a like a little bit more, is Arthur Bryant's but I am just as happy to eat at Oklahoma Joe's, so really it might as well be a tie. Great KC BBQ, I highly recommend it!

wow, this place is off the hook im a northern so our idea of bbq and ribs are very blah to me. i came to this place on business with my friend who happen to live in the area and he recommended this place, of course with me anti bbq person i was skeptical. The ribs was soooooo juicy, and big (its bigger here than ohio!) i enjoyed every bite of it and the sauce is awesome. its a must go to place if u here in town.

I've made an effort to try numerous KC BBQ spots and OK Joes is at the top of my list with Jack Stack. The Z Man sandwich is a staple that everyone should try. I also bought their steak rub which is also excellent on home made bloody Mary's. The line can get long but don't worry...they have a beer stand to make sure you don't get thirst while you wait!

here in Kansas City excellent BBQ that is unique and local is an institution and okie joe is our goto spot!carry out people are so nice and always smiling call ahead and they'll tell you a pickup time and even cook fries and onion rings when ya show up so they're crispy Try the ribs, and of course the zman and you're good to go!

I wish we had Oklahoma Joe's BBQ in California. BEST BBQ in KC! It was so GOOD! I went here with my husband's family, so glad we went. This is the 3rd restaurant Oklahoma Joe's opened. It's not as crazy busy as the original one in KC. It had tables to sit. What I ordered? I had the Two Meat Dinner - brisket and pulled pork. It's die for! I ate the whole plate. The pulled pork was good. It was juicy and tender! The coleslaw is so yummy. It wasn't drenched with mayo. It had right amount of mayo and seasoning. It was so good. The only thing I wish I ordered was the burnt tips. It didn't see it on the menu but I did see people order it while I was eating my meal. :( I guess next time!

Love. Absolutely BBQ love. I was stoked to see a location going in this close to home, Strangline is a bit of a drive for me, this is a lot closer. The food is the same great quality as Strangline.. I still have yet to venture out to the gas station location, which I am told is the best of the three still. Z-Man makes my day. It was refreshing to see how much room this location has.

I would like to title this review "Good things come to those who wait" and by "good" I mean "awesome" and by "things" I mean "Kansas City BBQ." If you're visiting KC and wanting to taste and experience authentic BBQ, look no further, don't even think about going any where else, trust me. When I first moved here, the only BBQ place that I was familiar with was Jack Stack but then Okie Joe's (as I like to call it) opened this location in Leawood and my life and taste buds were changed forever. Here's a confession for you - when the Leawood location opened, I may have visited 4 different times in 2 weeks. If you come around 11:30pm - 1pm or 5:30pm-7pm plan on waiting a little bit, but like I said in my title "Awesome Kansas City BBQ comes to those who wait." It will be worth it. Though the line to order may be a little long, once you place your order you receive it quickly. Also, if the weather is a little nicer, you could get carry out, drive across the street and eat outside one of the shopping centers. The carryout line is never that busy (and they have their own entrance), it's perfect for grabbing a bite to eat on a short lunch break or grabbing something to take home. My favorite menu item is the Z-man sandwich (smoked brisket, melted cheese, and fried onion rings on a bun) coupled with Okie Joe's famous fries. I also love their burnt ends (which you can get on Wednesday nights) and their new pork chili. Oklahoma Joe's is closed on Sunday, but don't settle for anything less, just ride that BBQ craving through until Monday and you won't be disappointed.

  • Darcey R.

I can't say anything that hasn't already been said. Best BBQ in Kansas City. You need to go on a Saturday or Wednesday to get their burnt ends; they will change your life. This location gets just as busy as the others so be prepared to wait if you go at peak times (or just go at 11am when they open like I do, never have to worry about getting a table). The Z-man is awesome, I suggest you try it at least once. But that is a sandwich and all that does is make you fill up on bread. Less bread, more meat.

  • Clayton R.

Guys, I want to give this place fewer stars... I really do. When a restaurant opens up near you, and you have absolutely NO self control related to consuming said restaurant's delicious fare, and then you gain weight because of all the deliciousness that you've been shoving in your face... you want to give them a bad rating so they'll close and you can be skinny again. Alas, I cannot. I must give them five stars. I don't like chains, and I was a little bit hesitant about Ok Joe's expanding to their third location. I was worried they might lose the charm and the special sauce that made the original so damn good. However, they didn't. The food here is comparable to the original, and that means it is awesome. The line also moves much more quickly, although it will occasionally be out the door at dinner time. All worth it. Plus, they've added a tiny bar near the front of the line so you can enjoy a Boulevard draft while you wait. Good service and good business decision as well! I've had every meat here, the ribs, the ends, the sides. They're all great. My favorite is the Z-man and fries, still. There is just something about that flavor/texture combination that drives me nuts. Great place to take out of towners. Nothing like it.

  • Justin M.

The best BBQ on the planet's new location continues the tradition of great food and fun. This location is set up a little better than the Olathe location as the line skirts the perimeter rather than cutting straight down the center of the restaurant. You can't really go wrong with anything on the menu here. I always say I'm going to try something new, but I never do. Get the Z-man and fries, it's the best sandwich on Earth.

    (5)
  • Chad B.

Exactly like the 2 reviews I have done for the other locations, but much closer to my house/work. What's not to love? The new location is very well laid out. They put a little bar right inside the front door so if you have to wait in line for 20 minutes you can at least have a beer. Plenty of seating and the same vibe you get at the Olathe location. It is almost like they read my mind!

  • Darryl R.

Came here for lunch (11:30AM) on a Friday because of the excellent reviews. The line was out the door (45 min wait minimum) so I went to the carry out and ordered a jumbo pulled pork sandwich. After I ordered the sandwich, they said they had a special with a free side - but it turns out the free side was $1.50 extra. However, the real rub was that when I got home, it was not a pulled pork sandwich, but sliced turkey that looked like it came off a pressed roll from a deli counter. The meat had no flavor (thank goodness for the sauce), and was mediocre - all for almost $10. Could have done better at Subway for half that. Maybe it was a one time bad experience, and if I actually got what I ordered I might have had a different opinion, but I don't plan on returning again for lunch.

My wife and I went for dinner tonight at the Leawood Oklahoma Joe's about 7:00pm. Having read the reviews warning us about long lines, I expected the worst. But we walked right in and ordered, with absolutely zero wait. Are the crowds dying down now that the restaurant has been open a while? Or is it just dead on a Monday night? I'd say only about 1/3 to 1/2 of the tables were full. I ordered the ribs and brisket plate, with a side of dirty rice, plus a cup of gumbo. The Mrs. had the Open Face Lean 'n' Mean Sandwich (turkey). I had water, she had red creme soda. I'd give the ribs an A, the brisket an A, the dirty rice an A-, and the gumbo a B+. I also liked the turkey sandwich. I'm a Texan, and so I think good smoked meat needs to speak for itself, without a lot of sauce. I appreciated that they put just a little sauce on the meat in the kitchen, so I could savor the flavor of the dead animals properly. (I also tried two of the sauces on my brisket and liked them both) The ribs were some of the best I had. I got the sensation that the meat was salty all the way through, so I wonder if they brine the ribs before smoking them. The brisket was some of the best outside of Texas, and was very respectable. It very well may be better than Arthur Bryant's, which is my personal favorite in KC. The dirty rice was really good, way better than my own. And the gumbo was tasty, though I prefer it to be made with a darker, richer roux. This gumbo is very creamy, as if it's been thickened up with a little too much corn starch. I'd love a bowl of it on a cold winter day. But as I was enjoying my meal, something seemed out of place. It took me a while to put my finger on it, but then I realized that I didn't smell any smoke either inside or outside the restaurant. And none of the cooks seemed even the slightest bit dirty. And there was no smoke coming out of the top of building. As we left, I even drove around it, and that's when I realized there's no wood pile here. How do they make real BBQ with no wood, no smoke, and apparently no fire? It's very mysterious, and the only explanation I came up with is almost too horrible to imagine - that they actually smoke the meat somewhere else, and then truck it in, and then just warm it up in the kitchen. Could it be? By the way, for the meal I mentioned above, we spent $26 for 2 people, including tax. There was no service, so I didn't leave a tip. UPDATE: I got a message from someone at Oklahoma Joe's. He said the smokers are in the back of the building, but the city of Leawood made them build a high brick wall around them. And that's where the wood is, too, which explains why I didn't see any wood. He said the reason I didn't smell any smoke inside is due to their great ventilation system, and the reason I didn't smell any smoke outside was just an unfortunate breeze. I learned they use Missouri white oak.

Full disclosure: My dad owns BBQ restaurants and so did my grandpa. I eat a lot of BBQ. No place is great at everything but people in KC talk about this place like Jesus is working in the back so I finally have in. I tried the ribs and brisket. The food was good. I would eat it again. Waaaaay better than Jack Stack. With that said, they kind of tasted like the vacuum packed ribs you can buy at Sam's or Costco. Very generic. They're definitely not cooking this meat over wood. It's made on a stove or gas grill. I also had the beans. They were gross. I like the sliced brisket you can buy at Sam's, but it's not authentic and neither is this. The sauce tastes like Kraft. Overall, the food was good like McDonald's fries are good- not like fresh cut fries with skin on but still pretty good.

I had ribs, brisket, Z Man, pulled pork. I practically had a buffet and about like their original location, it's not bad, overrated, yes. This place has good BBQ. It's good KC barbeque served in a loud environment with no table service. Don't get me wrong, I love little holes in the wall but recreating that for a faux experience at a larger restaurant makes me realize how unpleasant the experience of standing in line for 35 minutes not be able to find a table can be. And the barbeque is good but so is a lot of other barbeque in KC. It kind of reminds me of Zarda's in Blue Springs and I outgrew that gloppy stuff some time ago. But the neophytes and koolaid drinkers pile into this place with reckless abandon expecting some barbeque nirvana and when it doesn't happen cognitive dissonance forces them to believe that they had some of the great barbeque of our time. Ignore your televisions. Another thing that annoys me is the children's menu. They offer small children's items but charge more if adults order the item. Why? If the corndog is $4 what makes a difference who's eating? That's chintzy. If you want $6 for a corndog then just put that price on the item. They're not making their living on the children's menu. As for Anthony Bordain, whatever. He'll eat monkey nuts in a mud hut, his recommendation, while influential, should not be the only deciding factor.

Food is usually good at all their locations, but not any better than a lot of other established BBQ places in town. Hey, it's Kansas City!!!! If you are trying to avoid salt in your diet then definitely do not eat here. Too bad, the food would taste way better without the heavy salt flavor. Lots of salt always makes me wonder if the purpose is to increase the "shelf life". It worked for the pioneers.

By far the greatest bbq sauce I have ever had. I never was the biggest fan of bbq, but since I just moved to KC, I figured I should give it a try. And boy am I glad I found this place!!

Loved the Z-Man. Thought the line was going to be horrendous, but it moves quickly and surprise...there somehow appear open tables just in time. Great experience.

If KC is the world capital for BBQ, Oklahoma Joe's is the capitol building where they decree and declare what is good for BBQians. If you're already a fan of Okie Joes but are loyal to the original location, have no fear, this location is even better and the service is streamlined to keep the line moving and still carries the original store's service quality with a much more comfortable vibe. The quality of the meat far outweighs all the other BBQ joints in the region, and the BBQ sauce couples perfectly with the fries and the beans. I always get the Z-Man (and make it jumbo) and always it down with a coke, lemonade or Boulevard Pale ale. Do it weekly and grab a second meal and spoil a homeless man.

I recently drove 600 miles for a sandwich. I know, I know, that sounds crazy. But once, I drove 900 miles for a sandwich...which makes 600 miles sound almost-sane. I've been to Kansas City before, but never really had the opportunity to get properly acquainted with their world famous BBQ. Rachel, grew up in Kansas, and has a "been there, done that" approach to beef, making it hard for me to wrestle up the carcass-fest I've been dreaming of. Finally, I had my way. We were going to be in Manhattan, Kansas (the Little Apple) and since we weren't going to get any closer to KC, I finagled a quick, 600-mile side-trip to try Oklahoma Joe's "Z-man." We heard the legend of OK Joe's from every single Kansan we spoke to -- their stories varied, but the same points were always there: 1) Go to Oklahoma Joe's 2) I went there today/yesterday 3) It's on Anthony Bouidan's (or often, that guy, what is that guy's name, oh god, it'll come to me) "13 Places You Must Eat Before You Die List" 4) It's in a gas station 5) Get the "Z-man" -- smoked brisket, provolone (I know right!?), onion rings and BBQ sauce on a sweet golden bun We rolled into Kansas City about 5pm. Rachel wanted us to call in our order to avoid the often hour-long wait. I called and they said they weren't busy right now. "A sign from above?" I wondered aloud.

Absolutely love Oklahoma Joe's BBQ. Zman is a must try! So glad they opened up this location and it has the same great taste as the rest! KC is BBQ central and OK Joe's is my favorite!

I hadn't eaten at Oklahoma Joe's for at least 15 years and when I moved back to the Kansas City area I was excited to find out they had opened a restaurant down the street from me (Towne Plaza). I went within a few days of finding out and was not disappointed. I had the pulled pork sandwich that has slaw on it and it was as soon as I remembered it. My son had the burnt ends and I have not had better. The fries were SO good which is funny, because I didn't remember them at all from the past. The self serve soda machines are fun because there are choices you don't usually get. The friendly staff is appreciated, especially in a KC BBQ joint!

I simply cannot comprehend the rave reviews of this place. I've tried all three locations and have always found the food to be mediocre at best. The brisket is dry and chewy. The pulled pork is very ordinary. The ribs are also dry and pretty tasteless. I am a big fan of BBQ, but I guess I just don't get this place. We tried to get excited when the Leawood location opened near our house. Sadly, it was no better than the other locations. I'm not saying the food tastes bad, but the pulled pork sandwich was incredibly ordinary. The brisket was bland and dry. Their french fries are actually pretty good, though sometimes way over seasoned. The beans are pathetic. If I want beans, pork or brisket I head straight to Jack Stack. If I want great ribs, I go to Brobecks. I've probably given up on Oklahoma Joe's.

Great! Brisket and ribs. Potato salad a little runny and brisket a but cold. But otherwise fantastic!

Oklahoma Joe's get's my vote for best BBQ in KC. The Z-man is a great sandwich, and the only time I tried something different I got the ribs which were also well above average. I would say they have the best french fries in the world hands down. You can't beat the food quality for the price.

I really wanted to go to eat bbq in a gas station as my first experience but work beckons and only had time to go to one nearby and it was awesome!!!! The pulled pork and rib combo was tender, smoky and delicious and tasted just as good the next day since portions are ginormous. Be sure to get their bbq sauce (spicy one good too) and fries yum. I'd love to try zman next time before heading back to Cali but seriously this place bears Lucille's bbq anytime. Love Midwest bbq!!

I like BBQ ribs, with sauce, without sauce, about anyway they can be served I enjoy them. Oklahoma Joes ribs are this rib fan the ones I continue to go back for. They are moist, falling off the bone perfection every time. Did I mention I really like ribs.

Until recent trips to the plains, I was unfamiliar with the best bbq. So, maybe take my amazement with a grain of salt. But, I do know quality food. And this stuff was top notch. Great, broad selection, unbelievably delicious stuff. Probably the best I had in my tours of plains' bbq.

I know these are fighting words, but OK Joes is the best BBQ in KC (actually, anywhere I've ever been). Jack Stack may have more and better sides, but my goals is to procure the best ribs possible and pair it with a simple cole slaw. OK Joes is perfect. I also like their system of waiting to order and being able to sit and eat as soon as you order. Love that you can buy a beer while waiting in line. Bottom line: best ribs ever!

This is the new location for the legendary Oklahoma Joe's, and while I was skeptical at first that it would be as good as the original I was completely satisfied. Its actually better than the gas station in a few ways: * Dining room is much bigger and the line moves faster * Location is a lot more convienent for Overland Park people * Atmosphere is very nice while still retaining that classic "down home" feel from Joes * More drink fountains And the BBQ is the same perfect meat that you get at the 47th and Mission location. Literally cant tell a difference, it is so good. Places like Arthur Bryant's may lose a lot of their actual appeal when they open additional locations but Oklahoma Joe's has kept this one classic. Well done.

When people ask me what my favorite BBQ place in KC is I tell them Oklahoma Joes. I think it has the all around best meat and BBQ sauce around. If I have any out of town guests, this is one of the first places I take them. Although if they want the touristy fun vibe, I take them to the other location in the gas station. But I can just order this over the phone and pick it up in 15 min. I get the slab of ribs to share with two other people with french fries. The beef brisket and Z-man are also great choices. The meat practically falls off the bone.

This may just be the best BBQ on earth. Seriously. If you want to go to lunch, get there before 11:30 or plan to stand in line a while (20+ minutes). Yeah, it's that good.

Went to Oklahoma Joe's for the first time today. After reading and hearing about all the hype and praise this place has received I decided I probably needed to look into it before I passed judgment. I ordered a regular sized brisket sandwich, fries, beans, and their spicy slaw. The brisket was tender and juicy but not smoky tasting despite the smoke ring. I didn't care for either the regular or the hot sauce. The fries were very good although they were too salty for my taste. The beans were unusual. They didn't have the typical barbeque joint sweetness and meat chunks but was more like chili. It had black beans as well as a prominent onion/green pepper taste. Their spicy slaw was anything but spicy.......it had a vinegar type dressing as opposed to the creamy-mayo type dressing but not spicy at all. A good meal but hardly the world beater as many proclaim it to be. Overrated and overhyped......all of the items I had are much better at LC's.

Oklahoma Joes is definitely my favorite BBQ spot in KC. I have been to all 3 locations, and have yet to be let down. I always bring people from out of town to Oklahoma Joes! All of the sandwiches are great, and the ribs are amazing. This place does fill up fast, but the wait is worth it. Line typically moves quickly. You can also call ahead. Brisket is always cooked to perfection, and everything has a nice smokey flavor that you look for. I really like the "Night of the Living Dead" sauce, which is their hot sauce. You really cannot go wrong with any of the menu items. Everyone I have taken to OK Joes from out of town, requests to go back again and again. Would highly recommend if you are looking for great food!

I don't think I really need to review the food rather than to say, "Yum." I feel like BBQ is a personal preference and I always seem to get quality food from the various OK Joe's. This was my first time at this location. It was clean and nice as I expected it to be since it is new. I utilized the call-ahead service and made use of the nice carryout parking spots. As this OK Joe's is located in an area heavily-patronized by 9-5 workers, I was happy to see that it was not overcrowded during lunch hour. However, I did not go until1 for this reason. I don't think it would have been too much of an issue if I had gone at noon because the service was very fast and efficient. The staff were so nice, too. They used my name when asking if I wanted any crackers with my order. Nothing big, but I thought that was a very nice touch. Especially considering the transaction took me all of 5 minutes to complete. Very nice; very efficient. I would definitely order through the carry out service again for fast delicious lunch to go.

Excellent BBQ! The brisket is tender, moist and flavorful. The ribs have great smokey flavor and are just right when it comes to tenderness. Great place to eat. The sides aren't as good as Jack Stack, but the meat. Is first rate.

Nice location addition... Hard to go wrong here...LOVE the Carolina Pork Sandwich, and 2 Meat dinner (Pork and Brisket), beans rock, and so does the chili! My friends all love the Z-Man sandwich.

Since I was in Kansas City I wanted to have some BBQ. My coworkers brought me here for lunch and I opted for the Z man sandwich (I think it was called the Z man, there was a Z in the title). It was a beef brisket with onion ring, cheese and sauce. It was tasty to be sure but I don't know if it was any better than some of the brisket I get in PA (to be fair, I usually get Hess's BBQ in PA which wins awards every year).

Solid BBQ. When I entered, there was a line wrapping around the restaurant ... and everyone seemed to be having a great time standing in line. A good sign ... and I was not disappointed. Came back to order for a group of 50, big hit with the group.

Decent, not great bbq. I had higher expectations for Kansas City bbq. Gonna try Jack Stacks tomorrow. OK Joes was no better than bbq I could get in Columbus, OH - at City BBQ (which is quite good, by the way). I had the ribs / brisket platter. Ribs were tender, but not particularly flavorful. I would've expected more smoke flavor. Brisket was thinly sliced and tender...but not the best I've ever had. Also, they didn't have burnt ends on the menu, so that was disappointing.

New Joe's owns. Burnt ends own/pulled pork owns/brisket is rockstar/z-man is amazing. So much winning in one building. Getting new glasses next week, and deliberately looked for a place to go down by the Leawood location so I could have delicious BBQ after getting my eyes done. This location opening is dangerous and is already having an effect on my waistline.

Amamazing brisket, very juicy and well flavored pulled pork! Ribs were not our favorite. Washed our meal down with a famous Boulevard pale ale! But overall a good experience for sure! Anytime Anthony Bourdain lists a KC BBQ restaurant on his bucket list you know you'll have some good grub!

This place is awesome. Tasty. Fun atmosphere, although crowdy. Long lines are worth waiting in for this casual family restaurant. Anything you get here will be yummy, but my favorite is the Smokey Joe sandwich, with mixed beef brisket and pork. YUUUMMMM!

Good bbq. Operational growing pains. The barbecue is solid though not quite up to the original location. The sides are all excellent and the meat quality is very good. Overall the food quality is consistent with the other two locations. However, new smokers just don't have that same "mojo" of the older ones. Their best meat is pulled pork. Ribs are second. Their beans are great as are their fries. All in all the food is what I expect from OK Joes. Consistent, good, and a good value. However, the Leawood location drops the ball in the service department. It's understandable there is a wait for a good barbecue restaurant in Leawood. When we called in the first time the woman who took our order was curt and actually kind of rude. The wait time for our food on that weekend evening was totally reasonable, only 20 minutes for two entrees. Then the second time we called in a carry out order the man (who was polite) quoted a 1+ hour wait. He quoted this before he even knew what I was ordering. Would it really take an hour to prepare one sandwich? That same sandwich that they make in five minutes when I walk it? I get that some orders are larger and take longer to assemble. But how do you know the food prep time before you hear what the order consists of? Also, an hour wait for carryout is a sign that they don't have it together yet. We've ordered the same carry out from their other locations on weekend nights and our longest wait yet is 20 minutes.. All in all these things will hopefully improve with time. Generally I think OK Joes is the most consistent BBQ in KC. But they need to get their operational issues taken care of. There is plenty of great barbecue in KC that is as good or better as OK Joes without the wait. Even Gates' employees are polite. This is why I gave them the two-star "Meh. I've experienced better." rating. Because I've experienced better from the two other Oklahoma Joe's locations.

Having recently relocated to KC, I was looking for a barbecue place that resembled the barbecue I grew up on - Memphis style. While some might argue it's not exactly the same, you can't say it's not delicious. Despite several locations, the food manages to stay pretty consistent. That is, consistently excellent. My go-to meal is the pulled pork sandwich & fries (seasoned with a slight kick). The sauce seals the deal, so don't forget to add it. You're gonna love it.

Best BBQ in KC. The most popular item is the Z-man sandwich, which is killer. The Burnt ends are amazing only on the menu Saturday (all day) and lunch Monday and Wednesday they usually sell out by 1. The ribs, pulled pork and Carolina style sandwich are also great.

I want to start with the fact that I am not a huge meat eater. Maybe once every 2-3 months, but not very often. I do however love some BBQ when I am going to eat meat. I had tried Jack Stack a couple months ago, and it was good. I would go back, but it wasn't something I was jumping up and down excited about. I decided to try Oklahoma Joe's on a Wednesday evening. I love burnt ends, and they only do them on certain days of the week. I asked the guy, but honestly I only remember that they do them after 4pm on Wednesdays and at some point on Saturdays. If this is what you want, I'd suggest calling ahead to make sure it's something they have for the day. We did carry-out which was set up pretty awesome. They had about half a dozen spots set up for carry-out parking only, and a seperate entrance for call in/carry-out orders. I probably would eat in, but the line was super long for those choosing to do so. At that point in the evening I wanted to put on my pjs and watch some Shameless on demand. I ordered the burnt end special. It was 12.99 and it came with two sides. Opted for the fries and baked beans. I felt like 12.99 was a fair price considering the amount of food they gave me. I figured it would be some smaller portions of the sides, but they gave me a full (massive) thing of fries, a small side of baked beans, and 2 pieces of Texas toast. Way more food than I could have ever imagined eating in one sitting. Cassie ordered the Z-Man and we shared my sides. This was plenty. We finished off the fries (they were just too good) and she ate half the beans. I probably ate about 1/3 of my burnt ends, but I plan on going home tonight and making a burnt end pizza out of the leftovers. I will say these by far were the best burnt ends I have ever tasted. If I hadn't made myself stop I would have ate until I was sick. Cassie ate every inch of her z-man and said it was worth it even though she looked a little pregnant after finishing it. Cassie really was pushing for Jack Stack last night, but I made her try out Oklahoma Joe's and she was really happy we did. She said the only thing she liked better about Jack Stack is the Cesar salad she always gets. I reminded her that you do not eat bbq for salads. If you are in KC, and want some great bbq this place is a must.

Their Z-Man and French Fries are THE best!!! The quality of the beef they use along with their sauce makes this place my favorite BBQ spot in the city. It does get a little crowded, but the Leawood location is still not as busy as their other locations. Overall, the location and the restaurant is better quality than other BBQ shacks, but then again BBQ is suppose to be in a small shack place!

I was in KC for business and couldn't pass up some good BBQ. Asked around and everyone seemed to point us to Oklahoma Joe's. So, our group of 5 went to check it out. It was extremely good! I had the Z-Man sandwich and a co-worker got a slab of ribs. We split the sandwich and ribs between us. We both agreed that the Z-Man was the best of all. The ribs were also excellent. Everyone else in the group seemed very pleased with their choices. We tried one other recommended BBQ place while here, but this one was the top favorite.
