Diabetics at Village Inn

Village Inn is a tough place for diabetics, and you must be extra cautious while ordering food at the Village Inn, especially if you're a diabetic. The food items low in sodium are high in sugar or cholesterol at Village Inn which makes it difficult for diabetics to choose the right food at the diner.

Foods to Avoid at Village Inn for Diabetics

Village Inn offers very few items edible for diabetics without any threat. You can avoid sandwiches and burgers at Village Inn and try the light breakfast items on the menu. You must also skip the shakes as well as other juices from the beverage menu. Almost all the dinner items on the menu are high in sodium except Grilled Tilapia and 6 oz. Top Sirloin & Toast. Avoid Soup bowls and opt for cups instead at Village Inn.

I will never recommend this restaurant because they locked their doors to prevent us from coming in to eat. After a long day of driving around, our group of travelers arrived in Colby, Kansas, hoping to get a restaurant dinner. Village Inn is supposed to be open until 11pm and we arrived at 10:30, only to have them lock their doors to prevent us from entering. Apparently, they didn't want to have to actually cook and work so they could go home as close to 11pm as possible. We had to watch people in the restaurant eating and drinking, before walking off to the nearby truck stop to eat. If they don't want our business, then as far as I'm concerned, nobody should be giving them any business at all. Here's a clue Village Inn: if you actually want people to eat and spend money at your restaurant during your normal business hours, you'd better not turn business away. Tip: the truck stop is open 24 hours and the staff there is friendlier than Village Inn folks who don't care about the people who travel up/down I-70. And on the other side of the freeway are plenty of fast food restaurants who won't lock their doors to hungry travelers during their advertised open hours.

After the bad reviews I was reluctant to give this place a try. I was really hoping to find a great mom n pop diner for breakfast. This turned out to be pretty good. I got the Denver omelet and my son got the pancakes and ham.

I come here just for breakfast at lunch time. I can't get crepes anywhere else and to lazy to make them myself. So, I love the crepes, hashbrowns, and pancakes. The eggs are always just ok for me. They do have a kids menu which is nice. My problem lies with the service, it's slow. And we waited 20mins to have a piece of pie, and the waitress never came back. She just assumed we were done when finished our food. Well it was my birthday, so everyone wanted a piece of pie. They do have really good pie when you can get it to your table. Plenty of seating and very nice restrooms.

My wife and I have eaten at the Colby VI maybe four or five times in the past decade. This review isn't about the food, though. VI's have been around a while. The menu is fairly standard. You get a good breakfast at a fair price. (I don't remember ever eating lunch or dinner in a VI, so I can only comment on the breakfast.) What I really want to comment on is the service, particularly one waitress. She wasn't our waitress, so I didn't see her nametag. However, I'll describe her . . . 40-ish, thin and a long blonde pony tail. She's a fantastic server, and VI is lucky to have her. Our server was one of those typical unenthusiastic 20-ish servers than comprise about 90 percent of America's wait staff. I watched Ms. Ponytail working her tables. Her smile was genuine and infectious. She was perfectly attentive without being gratuitous. I watched her make trips from the kitchen to two of her tables just to check on her customers to see if they needed anything . . . not because she was en route to or from other tables, but simply because it was the perfect time to check on her folks. I eat in lots of restaurants. I experience scores of servers in a year's time. I know excellent table waiting when I see it. Ms. Ponytail, whatever your name is, just watching you work made my breakfast enjoyable. And, I'm kicking myself now for not taking the time to tell you that. Best wishes always!

We don't like most breakfast restaurants, but we were passing through Colby, KS and stopped at Village Inn. Food was excellent, staff was very nice, restrooms were clean. Overall great experience.

It's hard to find a secluded restaurant with such a friendly, warm, and inviting atmosphere. I felt cared for from start to finish, and the one misunderstanding (iced tea instead of hot tea) was cleared up wonderfully. They even overlooked my unintentional rudeness as I was knee-deep in work and rather distracted. They served me with a smile.

Can't understand how this place is still open. Went in several months ago, they had a hostess and one waitress. Waited on a table and was finally seated and waited on a waitress while the hostess stood and watched. Got up and walked out. Went back again tonight and the same thing happened. Must be the interstate traffic because no one except me would ever go back twice.

In all my travels, there is a small number of regrettable dining experiences to remind me that the world is a dining minefield. And the Village Inn won a coveted spot on this dubious list of places never to visit. The employees looked like prisoners of forced labor. The place was filthy with food scattered below tables and with many tables uncleared. The food was sodium laden and lukewarm. The highlight of the evening was some chubby acne face do-nothing host that was too busy stuffing his face with food than to tend to customers. Best part of all is service without a word of thanks. I never thought a dining experience can possibly get this bad. This place is a complete, total failure.

This is a very average VI located in lowly Colby, KS. Starving while driving down I-70, we stopped here for dinner. I know VI is safe for vegetarians and meat eaters alike, so it was an obvious choice out of the very few that I could find in Colby. Service was average, as was the food. My breakfast skillet actually came out kind of cold and soggy. It was free pie Wednesday, so that was bonus. Other than that, I can't say much else. It's a good place for a quick meal, or for a night after drinking. That's pretty much it.

One of better food choices in Colby, not excellent tho. Country fried steak skillet is good, but not enough food for the price

This is your typical Village Inn -- it's mediocrity at its finest. The service, atmosphere is OK. It's nothing to get excited about but nothing that leaves you fearing for your life. I had lunch here on Saturday. I went with the Turkey Avocado Bacon Melt with mayonnaise on the side. The mayonnaise was on the side and in packets, which made a lot of sense to me and I was glad this is what our waitress did because I didn't end up using them. Another diner with me had the French Dip. He said it was fine, but that the au jus was salty. We ended up having some of the Inn's Award Winning Pie. Quick side bar ... I actually looked this up and apparently VI has been awarded more blue ribbons by the American Pie Championship than anyone else ... of course, I couldn't figure out who else VI was competing against. Anyhoo ... I got the Birthday Cake Pie. It was a colorful pie with a chocolate graham crust, a layer of yellow cake, a couple of layers of french silk pie filling, a thick layer on top of vanilla icing and a side of shame. If I had it to do over again, I would have gone with the Triple Berry pie. Other people had Strawberry Rhubarb, which apparently is one of the award winning pies. All in all, not a terrible place to stop when you need a break from driving.

Two of us waited in front of the store for over 5 min while the Hostess messed around with the stapler, I understand a wait but not once after looking at us did she even Acknowledge that we where standing there and it might take a few minuets.... We should have taken the hint .... After she finished playing with her stapler she, sat us down....... We saw there was a big table and we where willing to wait..... And wait and wait...... After 10 min we saw another table get seated .... They where waiting for about 5 min.... And a waitress came up and took there drink order and turned around to walk off... Needless to say.... We left after being ignored after 20 min..... Poor service skill... Poor hostessing....poor waitressing ... And just disappointing ...We usually tip about $10 a piece after coming here we decided to wait till the next town..... We will just go to Starbucks .....

We also were hesitant to try this restaurant because of past reviews. But we are glad we gave it a try. They were very accommodating to our large group, including small children. The waitress was wonderful. Great variety. Really good food. Excellent pies! We will go back!!!

There is little to choose from dining-wise on I-70 in Kansas. Village Inn is a chain, so you know what to expect. We had great friendly, fast service at lunch time. Decent food. Grace even wished us a blessed day and safe trip!

There is not much to choose from in Colby, Kansas as far as dining spots. While the Village Inn Restaurant has been around for many years, the place was very clean and we felt very comfortable in the establishment. The hostess and wait staff were very nice, and attentive. The menu selection is typical American comfort food (see the menu at villageinnrestaurants.co… ). Our food arrived in a reasonable amount of time, and was good. The pie selection is excellent, and was a satisfying finish. I'm not sure why this restaurant is rated as low as it is among the other Colby Yelp reviews, but perhaps it's because it is just a typical, older comfort food restaurant. But judging from some of the other reviews of Colby eating establishments with low ratings due to flies, filth, or rude staff, you might consider Village Inn, which was clean and pleasant.

What a waste of money. I ordered shrimp dinner and son ordered chopped steak dinner. My shrimp looked and tasted like pine cones. I had asked for seasoned fries if they had them and the honey glazed carrots. The fries came and they were NOT 'seasoned fries'. I questioned them and the waitress came back and said the cook had put Lawry's seasoned salt on them...THAT does not make them seasoned fried! The carrots came...cold and right out of the can.. nothing on them. My son got his meal and the meat was burnt so they put that side down to hide it. But gravy and mushrooms didn't cover the burned taste. His side of corn wasn't hot either... And the waitress Kathleen never even asked about why all my food was on my plate when she picked it back up. I went to Burger King and got a sandwich. The folks there told me they have heard many bad things too, and they themselves don't go there anymore either. Save your money

Twice we've stopped at this location when travelling through KS and both times we've been very disappointed. The cleanliness and Hygiene of the staff is less than acceptable. We had to ask that one of our meals be returned when the waiter sneezed on it as he was bringing it out, the water glasses had lipstick on them, they served our pancakes with the bottom of another serving dish sitting on top of them so he could carry it all at once, one of the wait staff was scruffy and dirty and looked like a vagrant, the waitress for the table behind us kept playing with her hair and served food without washing. Overall not something that makes you feel like eating their food. We won't give them a 3rd try.

I had breakfast here earlier this week. A warm and friendly greeting was immediate, and even our big party got seated quickly. They were pleasant as we lingered over our coffee longer than usual. I had the Garden Skillet, which was diced and deep fried potatoes mixed with veggies, topped with two eggs and served with a stack of three buttermilk pancakes. It was a lot of food, and everything was cooked to perfection! A lot of food, but a great meal before going out in the fields!

Sign says "Award Winning Pies" as you enter. However, they are not made at the Village Inn. We're only giving it a 1 because of service. Food was awful.
