Right off the bat I'd like to say- Check the restaurant Business Hours. They're a little wonky so make sure you plan ahead!!!! Now on to my review! I love fried chicken. This place has probably the second best Fried Chicken I've ever had! It's perfect- crispy, juicy, and delicious! You won't have to worry about oiliness or the chicken being too dry- these people know their fried chicken. I loved all the sides- even the coleslaw- which I'm not usually a fan of was wiped clean! And don't get me started on the Baking Soda Biscuits! I can't believe how fluffy they are- they practically melt in your mouth! This is one of the places that just knows what good old fashioned comfort food is- and boy do they do it right. The portion sizes are VERY generous! Each adult gets half a chicken (Breast, Thigh, Wing, Drumstick) We ended up bringing two large containers home- and they were just as good the next night. Service was very good, quick, and friendly. I'd suggest this to anyone who likes fried chicken/comfort food! The place is definitely a time warp- Everything from the food, decoration, and even the waitress's attire is a throwback! Definitely a unique one of a kind restaurant you won't find anywhere else.

We had the worst experience at this place. The waitress yelled out us because one person in our reservation did not make it. From the time we showed up the manager was extremely rude. They tried to force us out the door and charged our child an adult meal because we didn't specify in our reservation his age. I will never go back. The owner must replace this manager. She is bad news.

Nice family style dinner. We went as a large group, welcomed by the current owners. This establishment has been around since the 1800's, they had another location, close by to the one here . Famous for their chicken & sides, very good

Overpriced and not what I expected. Food took 45 minutes to get to table even though we were one of the first seated. Meal after meal went by our table before we finally got ours and on the cold side. All food was generic and did not feel like home cooking. Bland and small portions for the cost. There are many great chicken resturants out there. This is not one of them.

The chicken was just ok it had been better and other times that I've eaten there also the coleslaw was not there as good as other times. service was just good enough. and the extorted and 18% gratuity out of me. probably the last time I go there. definitely not worth the time or the money

This place is pretty awesome you get half a chicken per person and free refills on everything else so it's great to take home and you get a scoop of ice cream for dessert. I drive about 30 minutes to come eat here but make it a special occasion as well I took my mom here for her birthday. The owner has always came and greeted us about every single time we go too.

Everything was absolutely delicious. Food and drinks were consistently full. I loved visiting this place and will come back again in the future when I come back to Kansas.

if you are a person who does not like spice, this place is for you. the chicken was crispy, not too much oil and juicy. The side dishes was pretty good. the colraw was a little sweet, the mash potatoes was creamy and good. As a runner, I thought the food needs a little bit of salt. the customer service was awesomeness. one other thing, it is in an old hotel that has character and classic with beautiful ceiling tiles.

The Brookville Hotel is a fine establishment with amazing fried chicken, however, the rest was lacking. Starting off the fried chicken is incredible. The other sides unfortunately were not what I would have hoped for from a restaurant with such an amazing lineage. We felt left down by the mashed potatoes and creamed corn. The ice cream and biscuits were also nice, but I have certainly had better in a Classic American restaurant. Overall I think the Brookville is certainly a better choice than any chain restaurant in the area and would recommend to others. It was not earth shattering and I think that is why this review is on the lower end.

What a letdown. I'd heard about this restaurant from my husband. So we went, finally. The minute I walked in, my head hurt. Seriously. The highly patterned carpet PLUS the highly patterned wallpaper were just TOO MUCH. The park benches where we sat while waiting to be seated were flimsy-feeling. The loud walkie talkies the staff used gave a cheap, cattle-call feel to what should have been a more serene dining experience. Plus, we noticed that we were on camera - that was really creepy to me. I did like the white tablecloth and white cloth napkins. The feel of the whole place, however, is stale, stuffy, fussy, overdone, dated, and stodgy. The food came and I was underimpressed. I don't eat cole slaw, cottage cheese, or pickles. That left TWO canned peach halves, which were on the same plate as the pickles (YUCK for those of us who like our flavors SEPARATE). They brought the preserves and butter but not the rolls--who does that??? If you're bringing butter and preserves, bring the rolls too, especially for someone who's had only one peach half for God's sake! Then the entrees came. Potatoes smelled funny--chemical-y and fake. I swear they dumped a bunch of sugar in the creamed corn. The gravy tasted icky, bland, and fatty. The skin on the chicken was soggy (those of you who love crispy chicken skin will be highly disappointed). The chicken MEAT itself was juicy and good. The biscuits had a good rich texture but again, were BLAND. I've been to other places that have far tastier biscuits. The dessert of vanilla ice cream was so NOT exciting. I did ask for some cinnamon to mix in with the ice cream, and they did oblige without a problem, so I appreciated that. So basically, except for maybe the chicken, they opened boxes, cans, and jars, and dumped the stuff onto plates. The couple next to us did not eat any of the sides. They were a younger couple (early 30's). That should tell them something. If I had to suggest only one change they could make, it would be to offer a mixed-greens (with grape tomatoes, carrot shreds, and other veggies) FRESH salad instead of the cottage cheese and coleslaw. I really did not feel that anything I had there was healthy at all, and I sorely missed having something fresh to eat. I won't return. There's simply no reason to.

Fun place we always bring visitors to. The meal is delicious, the service is great and the atmosphere inviting and homey.

I'm not sure what wormhole we walked through to enter this place, but I've been in scarier . . . wormhole exits. I'm not sure that made sense. It was like going somewhere time completely forgot. I'm not sure if that was just the shtick this place was banking on or if it's just how Abilene is. I'd love to go back to Abilene to find out for sure. First, don't eat here more than once a year or so! Please! Seriously, I mean no disrespect to the people that eat here more often, but it's not healthy! I am in no position to judge, but some of the people eating here shouldn't be. Really, I am only trying to offer some advice. You don't get a choice of what you're going to eat. You're going to each half a fried chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, "biscuits," coleslaw, and everything else you could possibly imagine having with fried chicken (and a bunch of things you wouldn't have thought of). Oh, and dessert. Yes, biscuits deserved quotes. They were not biscuits, no matter your definition of biscuits. I'm not sure what here was homemade and what wasn't (the biscuits made me question all of it), but it was mostly tasty and most of it seemed homemade. The problem here is that you should only eat here if you're passing through town for the experience. But, if you are passing through town, you can't take leftovers home. No one person should eat everything they're given here. No one. It's too much, don't try it. Hopefully I won't be back through this area within a year; I know I won't be able to resist stopping for dinner again.

Several people told me this was a "must try before you die" and I am glad I did. The portions are MONSTER and the chicken is phenomenal - really crispy, hot and delicious. The cottage cheese, coleslaw and relish plate were lovely and the biscuits were perfect. The mashed potatoes were absolutely out of a box, which is just an absurd shame. The creamed corn was as delicious as it was because it was loaded with sugar and butter (mmm, creamed corn). I'm glad we splurged on pie with the ice cream; they warmed it up and it was very nice pie. Docking a star for leaving the dirty dish cart in the middle of the dining room all night (as others have noted) and for making the waitresses wear the world's most uncomfortable, awkward-looking, unflattering uniforms. You can do retro without making people look like 1970s hotel maids, seriously.

We had heard about the wonderful Chicken Dinner at the Brookville Hotel for many years. Finally, we took the time to do a weekend in Abilene and started with this incredible lunch!! The cole slaw is so yummy that I purchased the postcard recipe in the lobby before leaving. The chicken was some of the best (and we've had other similar meals in Amish and Mennonite country) and you are allowed to take home any leftover chicken pieces. The remaining dishes will be packaged up for you at 50-cents a container. We were heading to the Eisenhower museum afterwards and glad that we had some time to stand, walk, and digest. We'll be back again! Be sure and make a reservation if you know what time you'll be arriving....just to be sure you won't be disappointed in the wait if it's a busy day.

Found this place by accident. We had driven 500+ miles that day and needed to sleep. We picked the holiday inn in Abilene and saw the signs as we exited the freeway. We had a large party of 8 but we were seated within minutes. The chicken was hot, crispy and juicy just like fried chicken should be. The mashed potatoes and gravy were great. Biscuits were amazing, and the cole slaw and peaches and cream cheese were enjoyed by all. Highly recommend eating here if you are staying anywhere near Abilene.

Great place to eat with a large group! The food is served family style by the waitress bringing out the food in huge bowls. The fried chicken is DELICIOUS and so are the mashed potatoes and gravy as well as the creamed corn. Service was very good and friendly so there's no problem there. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and will be revisiting for sure.

Had Father's Day lunch here. Great meal, I would have given five stars but my wife gets five stars for her Southern Fried Chicken. Absolutely no one makes better than my wife. But this place comes close.

Oh hot damn, this is some good fried chicken. This is probably the second best fried chicken I've eaten in my life. Located right off I-70, Brookville Hotel is not really a hotel, just this cute restaurant that's recreated from their old location some miles down the road. Some people are real uptight about it moving but as we talked to the fourth generation owner, we found that the establishment would have been closed down by the authorities if they didn't up and find a new location that suited their needs. And better to have to drive a little ways to find that chicken rather than have it gone entirely. So give it up haters. I will reiterate that this is a 4th generation establishment and they are so friendly and upfront about how they do things. And some damn good fine chicken this is. The skin is crispy and flavorful, coated well with a bit of lemon pepper spice that gave it a nice edge you don't find in other fried chickens. It was also dipped in milk for any of you with lactose allergies. We ordered takeout which was a super reasonable price of $4.25 for a 4-piece. Isn't that cheaper than KFC? And for far, far better quality. If you stay in, prepare for a feast. I didn't get to try any of the sides since we just did takeout but it looked good. And if tasted anything like the chicken... If you're driving down I-70 in Kansas, I reckon you stop here for a bite. Also take a look around. Since this place is recreated, it's still retained much of its character and you can see how things looked at the turn of the century.

Been going here for years, first at the original Brookville location now here in Abilene (still a little odd calling it the same name in a different town). Chicken and cream corn are great. I noticed they took carrots off the veggie tray however, so I don't like that very well.

I was really looking forward to this meal. I knew going into this place that the menu was fixed, and served homestyle. The cole-slaw was excellent, as were the biscuits and gravy. The big let down was the mashed potatoes. The instant mashed potatoes kept me from giving them a 5 star rating. The chicken was some of the best I ever had, and you get to take what you can't eat home with you. The cream corn was delicious. If you want pie, that will cost you extra, but you need to have a real appetite to want pie. The ice cream was good, but it's not homemade. You can also walk upstairs and see the rooms as they were in the early days. The Eisenhower Museum in nearby, so you can make a fun trip out of it. It's worth going to once, but I doubt I would return.

I had the pleasure of dining here for a rehearsal dinner and we got to sit in one of the back rooms with the excellent paneled ceilings and fun Victorian inspired chandeliers. Now for the food-the fried chicken is absolutely delicious. It was perfectly seasoned and moist. Everything else was edible. The mashed potatoes tasted like they were out of a box, the creamed corn had no flavor, the gravy lacked texture and flavor, the coleslaw was made with cream as opposed to mayo (again, no flavor), the rolls reminded me of my elementary school cafeteria and the vanilla ice-cream was average. If you're in Abilene it's worth the stop just for the chicken and atmosphere.

We stayed at a nearby hotel and walked to this place based on the recommendation of the hotel clerk. A mistake. Everything is served family style and there is no real menu. For $13.95 you get half a fried chicken and side dishes. If you want anything else, you better go to another restaurant. Okay let's start with the "salad." After taking our drink order the waitress, who was very efficient and pleasant, brought out a large bowl of cottage cheese, a large bowl of cole slaw, and a relish plate. I don't eat cottage cheese so can't comment. But the cole slaw was this white, foamy substance that had no flavor and a very unappealing look to it. Another reviewer mentioned it is made with cream? At any rate, this was the salad. Along comes dinner and we get a plate of fried chicken, a bowl of creamed corn, bowl of mashed potatoes, bowl of gravy, and a plate of biscuits. The chicken was just okay. It tasted like it was fried an hour ago and sat in a warm oven for an hour awaiting our arrival. It tasted okay, but was soggy. The creamed corn was pretty bland. The worst was the mashed potatoes. They had a cardboard flavor like powdered potatoes. The gravy was also bland. The high point of the meal was the terrific biscuits. They were fluffy and had a crunchy crust and were fresh. The whole time we were eating we got to look at a dirty dish cart that the staff keeps positioned in the middle of the dining room. As each table finishes eating the staff wheels the cart over and piles in the dirty dishes, then leaves the cart back in the middle of the room again. Does not do much to work up the appetite. Overall I think this place is just a gimmick and I can't recommend it.

Overall this place is way overpriced. The set menu included: peaches, bread and butter pickles, biscuits, strawberry jam, chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, cole slaw, cream corn, cottage cheese, and ice cream. Except for the ice cream it was served family style. It was $15.95 for adults and only water was included to drink. Also, you could only take home the chicken and not the sides. The chicken was good, but nothing really special. The corn was too sweet and the potatoes were instant. When a restaurant only serves a few items the least it could do is make mashed potatoes from scratch. The staff was very friendly and I found the place to be very charming. If the prices were lowered I'd consider going back.

We were there at opening, on our way from Denver, on June 21 2012, 5 PM. We had eaten here about 6 years ago. We were seated in good time, did not have to wait. My wife had just had surgery and with a statement from the medical group that stated she could only eat about 1 cup worth of food, or a child's serving, she mentioned it to the server. The server said she would have to talk to the manager. My wife went to the front counter. A lady saying she was the manager was not sympathetic and said that she would either not eat anything or pay the full price. We were not happy but I did want to eat and she also wanted a little. So, we paid the $16 each for meals. My wife had a tablespoon of potatoes and about 2/3 of one leg. I ate what I could but we ended up taking the balance with us. We travel a lot and the take home chicken will no doubt hit the trash can. I really think this place could be more understanding. The food is not great and unless we are traveling by there, we live in Kansas City, we will not make any effort to go there.

The issue with Brookeville is that you either like the sides or you don't. It's not rocket science. You like their brand of cottage cheese, or you don't. You like their coleslaw recipe (I LOVE IT! ) or you don't. But who doesn't love fried chicken? Beautiful dining rooms. Good for parties or catering. Friendly staff. clean kitchen. Make reservations, or you might be left wanting... **Or you can also call ahead for a take-out order. It is cheaper than dining in, but you get all the sides (minus the ice-cream).

  • Roxanne B.

I'm with Peter G. from Palm Desert. The side dishes were overcooked and bland. The coleslaw was scary and the potatoes tasted boxed. The chicken coating was very thick with not much flavor. We tried to prevent the staff from bringing us some of the sides that we didn't want, but they brought them anyone. Everything felt very robotic in that regard. My husband is from Kansas and had heard about this restaurant for years. I don't get it.

I visited the Brookville Hotel as the only member of our group who had not eaten here already....the only chicken virgin shall we say. But it had been bragged up to a gospel type experience...so in we go. There is no ordering or deciding what you want....except the beverage. The table was loaded with cottage cheese and what they deemed as sweet and sour cole slaw. It had a bit of a vinegary wang to it but not really outstanding. Also a relish tray with cinnamon apples and bread/butter pickles. Before that all got inhaled a large platter of chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, creamed corn and biscuits arrived. Chicken was fantastic, with crispy coating, steaming hot, nice and juicy....Oh by the way, they will refill it again and again, as long as you request it. But beware left overs of the side dishes are not carryout items, only the chicken that is left on the table, goes into a foil lined bag for transport. I commend them on the biscuits that were served, they tasted home made, and came with preserves. All in all I would recommend this place if you were famished and hadn't eaten in a few days, but it came up short of being the gospel experience. The hotel has an interesting history that is published in a brochure in the lobby, and the decor is old-timey....use your imagination a little and its a trip back to the pioneer plains, eating at the hotel before the stage coach arrives for you. Price was about $15 per person.....pie and drinks other than tea or water is extra.

Prepare for a feast. Try to fast for a long time before you go to the Brookville Hotel in Abilene KS for one of the best family style fried chicken meals you'll ever experience. I know, you're probably thinking "why should I drive all the way to Abilene KS for dinner?" Doubt not, the trek is more than worth it. Plus the Eisenhower Presidential museum is nearby so that you have a place to walk off some of the mass quantities of "chicken 'n fixins" you just devoured at the Brookville. The ambiance is hokey but charming. You're served by pioneeresque ladies that start bringing your food as soon as you sit. There isn't a menu, only tables and chairs. The food is not healthful since everything is either fried, has cream in it, or needs butter and or gravy. Here's what you get: sweet-Sour Cole-Slaw, Cottage Cheese, Skillet of Fried Chicken, Mashed Potatoes w/ Cream Gravy, Cream-Style Corn, Baking Powder Biscuits with creamy butter and preserves, Home Style Ice Cream! It's worth the trip.

What a nice surprise this was when we visited, based on a suggestion from a staff member at nearby hotel. In business since 1870's, run by same family, and recipient of a James Beard Award for 2007, this was an excellent diversion from fast food and chain restaurants. Remember the days of relish plates & family-style dining in more formal dining surroundings? We got Cole slaw (a unique Pennsylvania recipe with good flavor), cottage cheese, bread & butter pickles, peach & spiced apple ring. For the dinner, it's fried chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, biscuits and beverages. Great chicken, excellent creamed corn, good old fashioned potatoes & gravy (add salt & pepper, as they come out a little bland to satisfy the masses), and outstanding biscuits & jam. Topped off by fresh pie & homemade vanilla ice cream. Pleasant staff, great tin ceiling, old feel to the decor, and all for under $45 for two, including the tip....and we had wine plus took home chicken & biscuits. This place deserves recognition as a genuine slice of Americana. Just off I-70, it's worth the stop.

Being from Kansas, this place is an institution in the best possible sense. I experienced family style dining in an old, old hotel, and while I hear they've moved to a new location I'm told it's just a new building with the same classic historic charm and the same rocking food. Of particular note are the side dishes, the cream style corn, cole slaw, real mashed potatoes and gravy, and excellent fried chicken. Oh, I guess I just told you most of the meal... so you get my drift. It's a bit $$ but the service is excellent, and I swear you'll want to write home about it. If you find yourself in Abilene run, don't walk, over to check it out.

Our experience did not live up to the hype. It wasn't bad but wasn't memorable. We live in KC and have many chicken restaurants that are better than this. If in the area check out Stroud's, Granny's, or even Walmart take out chicken. Oh yeah, don't ask for a box to take your sides unless you want to pay an extra .50 a container.

Though I haven't eaten at the "new" Brookville Hotel, I ate at the old one many times over the years. I was born nearby in Salina but lived in Brookville for a couple of years as a young child in the late fifties. My father began his banking career at the Brookville National Bank next door, which later became a dining room in the original hotel. The food has always been noted for it quality and quantity - chicken, mashed potatoes, corn and biscuits - the classic Kansas supper. It was not uncommon (in the days of cheaper gas) for folks to drive from Kansas City or even Denver for a chicken dinner at the Brookville Hotel. I've heard that the new hotel fairly replicates the original. I look forward to visiting.

Rode past the Brookville Hotel at it's original location in Brookville, KS on the motorcycle many years ago. Remember the distinctive white siding with big black letters standing high atop the front of the building. Remember reading a sign, there, about the chicken dinners that it was famous for. Read today that it has been moved to Abilene. Have never eaten there, but am giving it 5-stars just because I'm so glad to see a picture of it, again.
