I have always loved Tony's pizza. Last year my husband and I started a vegan diet so no cheese, but the pizza is AWESOME without it! We order it with extra sauce. I don't understand the bad reviews. If what these people say is true I doubt this venerable landmark would still be in biz.

Yesterday my wife suggested we actually try this place because we've lived here for a while and they have a gluten free pizza. My wife just found out earlier this year she is gluten intolerant. I thought that most people who get all snobby about gluten intolerance were pompous jerks, until someone I love went through it. Anyway we order the pizza two salads and a kids spaghetti. Takes about thirty minutes then my son and I drive up there. I get him out of his car seat and we open the door and see the sign that says they don't take credit cards. I have no cash on me but I remember that I just happen to have two counter checks in my glove compartment. Annoying but we'll live. I go to pay and the cashier makes me put my phone number and drivers license number on the check and I'm immediately flashing back to the early nineties when my mom used to pay by check. Like honestly how do you not accept credit cards. It makes your while business seem shady. I get home and we sit down to eat. I put my son's spaghetti on his plate and it just looks like slop. Whatever it's spaghetti and he'll probably hate it anyway. We open the salads and are underwhelmed. Pizza places cannot make a decent salad. Moving on, we Unbox the pizza and it looks awful. It tastes like rubber, and it completely falls apart. Whatever I'm sure gluten free pizza isn't easy to make like normal pizza but the real kicker is what happened today. Either the pizza isn't gluten free or it was cross contaminated with some regular dough because my wife had felt awful all day. Needless to say we won't ever be going back especially when there are so many great options in Valpo.

Tried this place for the 1st time and the pizza was horrible. The crust is bland, the sauce is bland, it was very greasy, and they put so much cheese on it it just slid off the pizza. I came here with my husband and two kids and not one of us liked it. We won't be back and I wouldn't recommend it to anybody.

Regular cheese pizza is VERY bland and almost undercooked. Unfortunately will not be returning or recommending to friends.

I have been coming to Tony's Place for as long as I can remember and it still remains my favorite hometown restaurant. The pizza in a pan with pepperoni, mushroom, onion and pepper is my standard order. My parents also enjoy the anti pasta salad. Friends from Chicago have tried to sell me on other deep dish pizzas, but I have yet to be convinced any other is comparable. I am slightly biased, but the hand-tossed dough and homemade sauce just keeps me coming back!

Not that good. I might try Tony's again I might not. It was just blah. They have good bread but that's about it. I wasn't a fan of their sauce and service was lacking.

The only saving grace to this place was the main meal. First, we arrived at 9:30pm on a Saturday night... The place was totally empty. They told us we could have a seat and we tried to order drinks. The server was horrible. She did not even know if the served margaritas and just starred at us confused. We had to literally ask her to go find out. She looked confused. It took this girl over twenty minutes to bring our drinks, even then she missed one (there were only four of us). We watched them at the bar struggling to figure out the margarita blender. Once she brought them over, they were a mess! The margarita was piled two inches over the rim, so when it sat at our table for two minutes ended up all over our table! Next, she brought out my salad which was soggy bag lettuce and it was drowned in dressing. Our food did eventually come out and was good. While we were dining we could smell the bathroom, which were no where near us. After a while we could smell bleach after we told them about the odor. Lastly, the bus girl came by and grabbed out dishes and then two seconds later came back and tried to grab dishes we were still using. I get it, it was late, but just a little awkward.

Hands down, my favorite pizza! Their sauce is so good, they sell it in jars. The deep dish pizza- to die for crust, balanced sweet sauce, and tons of cheese! They use a ground Italian sausage. Their thin crust is great as well. Their pricing is very reasonable. Well worth the visit even though they are inconvenient with street parking, cash only, and don't open until 4. I still make the 20 minute drive to pick one up. They have dine in and carry out.

The most awful meal of my life! Pizza is bad, but the veal is terrible! The establishment looks and feels very old and dirty. Not a good atmosphere with all the dead animals on the walls. If you decide to brave it, make sure you have plenty of cash as they don't take cards.

Our family of 5 came here on a Friday night. It was busy, and their menu says it will take up to 60 minutes to get your dinner. We waited 80 minutes until I complained and we finally got our salads and breadsticks. They did give us a round of drinks on the house, but we waited another 20 minutes for our food. My eggplant parmigiana was forgettable and bland. The lasagna was seriously inedible, the macaroni and cheese wasn't very good and the pizza was undercooked and the cheese rubbery. The salads were just a plate of iceberg mix with dressing and a package of crackers. The staff was pretty inattentive to us and needless to say we won't be going back. I hate to complain, and I really tried to be patient, but this place is ridiculous.

If you like pizza like I like pizza, under no circumstances should you eat here. Bad pizza, bad attitudes, substandard food. I think the only people who like this place are folks who grew up eating this stuff and don't know much else.

Last time there sat in restaurant for 10 minutes or more and was never approached by anyone. No waitress, busboy, owner, nothing. The place was not even busy. Lifelong Valpo resident and will most likely never step in the place again. Went right next door to B-dubs and was tended to immediately. Downtown has too many other choices whose staff is welcoming and want your business.

Anyone who craves true Chicago pizza should go to Tony's. I've been a fan of Tony's ever since I had their pizza when I was 7 years old. Every time I visited my grandparents, we would go to Tony's for dinner. My Grandpa would get the spaghetti and my Grandma would get the Italian beef sandwich. My Grandma would make fun of him because he would sneak Kraft Parmesan cheese into the restaurant for his spaghetti. She called it "Grandpa's Stinky Cheese!". As for my family we get the Italian Sausage, Pepperoni, Mushroom, Deep Dish Pizza every time. We love this pizza so much we get one hlaf-baked to bring back home to eat. Things to remember: 1. Bring Cash 2. Ask for a pitcher of pop 3. Enjoy yourself

First off, I'm a deep dish pizza guy. Tony's has a great deep dish pizza, not as good as Uno's or Lou Malnati's but definitely good. The decor has not changed since the 70's, but the staff is friendly and it makes a great family night. Cash only! 3 1/2 to 4 stars is for pizza; also not a place to get a salad.

  • Glen S.

I can't believe that anyone would give this place less than five stars. To me, this is what a pizza joint should be. Just outside Chicago, this place is a must if you want to taste what real Chicago pizza tastes like. We walked in with 5 total college aged guys thinking we would clean the place out. Turns out, one large deep dish serves the whole country of Djibouti. The prices are right and the beer is cold. If you're thinking of walking in this place and ordering anything but the pizza, you might as well just move to Djibouti. The second you walk into this place, you feel like you're in a South Side 1950's pizza joint. Do what you know is right and order the pizza. If you can, thank Tony on the way out.

Meh. Ugh. Blah. Never again! This place has been open forver. My childhood memories were that it was a great old fashioned Italian restaurant. Memories must be misleading because this was $40.00 worth of Italian food that would embarass Chef Boyardee. Everything was from a can. Everything was bland, salads were wilted and brown, pop was flat, everything was considerably overpriced for what you were getting.

One time we went here and ordered sandwiches. There were two of us. It took us almosst 30 minutes to be waited on. We finally got in our order. The sandwiches never came. We called our waitress over so we could pay for our drinks and told her we were leaving. She began to cry and begged us to stay because they would "deduct the amount from my paycheck." I walked to the bartender and asked him if this was true. He said, "No." That's the last time I was there.

About the best pizza I ever had. Never got a bad pie here and I've been going here for at least the past 15 years. To this day it is hard to make a decision of what I like best, the thin crust or the deep-dish??? The staff has always been extremely friendly, the bar area is pretty cool as it has a glass encasing of a MUTHA F'N MOUNTAIN LION!!! Beer selection is kind of lacking though. I hate to dis anything about this place but their original beer well it kinda sucks and labatt's is like miller light, but they do have 3 Floyds which is fantastic. The Pizza is even still really awesome reheated. Just how Lasagna is. I have never had anything else on the menu besides the Pizza but I hear that their italian beef is very good as well. Hands down my favorite pizza ever and I've had a lot of different pizzas in my day. Lots of good memories with friends/family here as well. WE LOVE TONY'S!!!!

Went here on a Saturday late afternoon. There were 6 full sized adults, 2 kids and we were stuffed into a table for 7. When I asked if we could push 2 tables together to have a bit more room, the waitress rolled her eyes and said no. Several minutes later, she returned to take our drink order, with more attitude than the first time. This place does not offer free refills, and a request for water almost set her over the edge. When one memeber of our party ordered, and thought she hadn't been heard, she repeated her order and the waitress rolled her eyes (again) and said, "I heard you the first time."I've never seen so much attitude, and I work with teenagers! After putting in our orders, we realized that this place was cash or local check only. We are the card carrying type and after all the attitude, didn't really care to eat there. We cancelled our order, much to the waitress's dismay and headed out the door. Buffalo Wild Wings is next door, we went there, had a great service, and could use credit cards. A much better way to go. Sad thing is, we are all very generous tippers. Boy did Christina (Miss Attitude) miss out.

I keep hearing from people this place has some great deep dish pizza, so me and my hubby decided to try some. We never got a chance to. I hate going to a place and being ignored and it wasn't even that busy, not to us anyway. Ridiculous!!! After waiting 15 min we decided to leave. Never again. They had two seating areas, one for the bar area and one when you walk in. We sat in the bar side, maybe we shouldn't have. It was a weird arrangement. Oh and cash only, WTF? And I don't get all the stuffed deer heads etc all over the wall. Whatever... so we wound up at Gelsosomo's and were taken care of immediately!

READ READ READ - Sitting here at Tonys, right now. Pizza isn't bad. We walked in, nobody here to greet us. We wandered around until we found someone. Strike one. Then they have signs posted that they don't accept credit cards. Strike two. Then when I get the check, they charged us 50 cents for a box for the left overs. Strike three. Avoid this place. It's not worth it.

Wow I must be insane. I've been going to Tony's the past 15 years and have not once had a bad experience. Granted, I only get the pizza/salad/beer when I go, so I can't speak to the rest of the menu. However, the pizza, in my opinion, is the best pizza in town with fresh dough, excellent spices, and incredible cheese. Being an early fan of deep dish, I had later opt'ed for the thin crust and have not turned back. Not only does the food please, but the environment is super relaxing. It's a pub/tavern, so you won't see some bullsh*t granite countertops or neo-modern stylings, but it's kept it's rustic charm for decades, enough to keep clientele coming back year after year. The waitstaff is solid without ever appearing to succumb to the "service line blues". Personally, I prefer to not have a waiter/waitress act like I'm the last thing standing between them and their night out on the town, which I've felt in numerous restaurants (and pizza parlors) across NWI. The staff at Tony's doesn't jump backwards through hoops but certainly doesn't text their boyfriend about the new Linkin Park single while neglecting to fill-up your glass. One improvement I wish Tony's would make is on their beer selection. They did acquire some 3Floyd's which rules, but Labatt Blue? Honestly, people in Canada don't even drink that. It's not even cool enough to be hipster. Just get rid of it. If anything, hook up with more local brewers and cement yourselves as THE local pizza place in Valpo. Also, echoing the comments on credit cards. Truthfully, it's not a big deal to pay in cash. I agree it'd be easier, but certainly not a deal breaker. If it breaks your deal, Papa John's is right down the street. Executive Summary: Pizza: 10/10 (absolutely my favorite pizza anywhere in the country) Bar: 6/10 (could use major re-working, 3Floyd's redeems the rating a bit) Atmosphere: 7/10 (cozy, chill, vintage, homey) Waitstaff: 7/10 (solid, nothing special, reliable) Payment: 4/10 (they don't mind splitting bills in groups, cash only is a downer) Parking: 8/10 (plenty of street parking with lot across the way, on a Friday night, takes a little hunting)

From reading the other reviews, me and my entire pizza-crazed family must completely insane or genuinely out of touch with our own taste buds. This place is phe-nom-en-al. Let me tell you though that after venturing away from the pizza for a few trips (stupid, stupid!), the pizza is the ONLY WAY to go!! This is a deep dish pizza, abundant with sauce, cheese and toppings. The crust is special. Its flaky yet heavy and doughy at the same time. It's freaking delicious and a medium can feed 3 large men. The beer is cheap and of good selection, the pizza is incredible, the service is friendly and personable, the atmosphere is cozy and the prices are fair. I have and will continue to take myself, my friends and my family to this place each and every time I am within 30 minutes of Valpo. Keep it up Tony!!!

It's a great pizza, cheap for a family or group of friends! But, you'd better bring your cash! They're old school!

This review is for the Pizza. I consider Tony's Place a pizza place, right or wrong, that's why I go. And the Pizza at Tony's: absolutely wonderful. I've had a lot of great pizza in my life. I actually worked at Lou Malnati's for 4 years, in Chicago. Earlier in my life, I worked at Ronnie's Pizza in Valpo. Back in the day, I didn't need to eat pizza other than Ronnie's and I thought Ronnie's pizza was the best in town. Man was it good. I didn't know how good it was 'til it was gone. Snappy (Ronnie Sr.) would spend hours hand crafting the ingredients for those pies. He would try different brands of mozzerella and experiment with blending the different brands for their various characteristics, melting, taste and browning, to get the right results. (Bear with me, I'm going somewhere with this). He would cook his own sauce and grind and season his own sausage. He spent the time and effort to put out a hand crafted product, made from scratch with care and love. These are the same characteristics I taste in Tony's pizza. Now I don't know if everything is from scratch or not. I guess I could find out. But the cheese is just right. It doesn't just melt into a gloopy mess, it also browns just the right amount. When I put the pizza in the oven to reheat it, I get a little crispy brown on top that's most welcome and makes a reheated slice almost better than a fresh one, in a way. The crust. The crust is crumbly, Chicago, cracker style thin crust. It's crisp and has a good flavor. The sausage is crumbled on and applied liberally. With the cheese and the generous toppings and the sausage, it almost has a lasagna-on-a-crust experience that is right up there with the best Chicago-style pizzas (which is the best style of pizza). The sauce complements the whole thing perfectly. I can't say that Tony's is the *best* pizza I've ever had. I lived in Chicago for 10 years and we scoured the city's small pizza shops for the best pizzas. We did a damn good job finding them. Tony's is right up near the top though. Let me put it to you like this: Pat's Pizza in Chicago is considered by many to be the best thin pizza in the city. At one point, my roommate worked there and he brought home their pizza all the time. I've had a lot of Pat's pizzas. Yes, they're good. I'll take a Tony's pizza over a Pat's pizza any day. I don't know what you're looking for from Tony's Place and if you want me to critique their service, their beer selection, the decor or anything else then this isn't the review for you. What I want from Tony's is exceptional thin crust pizza, which they regularly deliver. My expectations are met. If you're looking for the same then I think Tony's might also make you happy. P.S. And yes, it's worth taking the 5 minute stroll to the ATM to get some cash. For Pete's sake.

Well can't really rate Tony's since we were never waited on. We just moved to Valpo early this year and another restaurant worker told us about Tony's. Went last night place was busy and we did find a table but was never approached or even acknowledged for over 10 minutes. Wow they either need more help at this place or a better manager.. We found several things on the menu we wanted to try but not sure if we want to go back. May want to update the outside since it doesn't look like much from the outside.

Decided to stop here with the family since we were taking a drive around town Wednesday evening. Got some drinks (not alchohol) since we had visited a brewery the night before. Small drinks and no free refills. Cash only restaurant. The pizza we ordered was not terrible but sorta bland compared to other pizzerias. Not looking forward to stopping here in the near future.

  • Korey A.

My husband's family has always ordered from this place. We decided to try their "stuffed" pizza and I thought it was disgusting. I never thought I would say this, but it had too much cheese. It looked like instead of making thicker crust, they just added ten times as much cheese to the pizza. The little sauce that was there was okay. The cheese actually wasn't very greasy, which was the one plus. The dough was mushy and time in the oven couldn't even fix that. A slice was impossible to get out of the box. What I did get out looked like a huge blob of cheese, not a slice of pizza. It was even more difficult to eat. I asked the guy at the place if they had crushed rep pepper packets and he said, "You could buy some." Seriously?

I use to love Tony's. Use to. The pizza is good and not overly priced, but the service is horrendous. The waitresses are all very nice, but the service is incredibly slow. We waited nearly 50 minutes for one pizza and one sandwich. There was hardly an apology about the wait and waving down your waitress was not easy. Also the restaurant is very hot, loud and crowded. I expect most places downtown to be crowded on a Friday night, but Tony's needs to invest in some more cooks and ovens to accommodate the surge of customers they get over the week. They also need to start accepting credit cards. I was excited to bring a friend to Tony's, but after the awful night we had I doubt I'll be going back.

  • Bob P.

Pizza is average. Slow servers. Awkward layout. Outdated decor. No refills. But worst of all... No credit cards accepted?! Hello? It's 2010! I wonder if they realize how much business they are missing out on b/c of that. Another locally owned business not making an effort to compete in the market. Your loss.

    (1)
  • Brian C.

Tony's has some of the best pizza in the area. It's good enough to occasionally tolerate all it's other shortcomings. The rest of the menu is bland at best, the service can be excruciatingly slow, no refills, and cash only.

Meh. I've experienced better. In general, Tony's has a good reputation but I was disappointed. My friends had no complaints or compliments about their lasagna. I ordered mushroom ravioli and was surprised to see a large bowl of sauce surrounded by 5 neatly placed ravioli. I thought it was a joke and asked my friends if they ferreted away my dinner while I used the restroom. But the server confirmed that my meal was indeed complete. . So I ate slowly...then found the ravioli to be overly salty. What a disappointing meal... I won't be ordering the ravioli again and actually I have no inclination to visit Tony's again.

This is one of my favorite pizza places! I grew up in northwest Indiana, and I long for Tony's. The prices are very very cheep. My wife and recently went to Valpo for the weekend, and this was the first place we went to when we got into town. We got some bread sticks, a medium pizza, and a pitcher beer for under thirty bucks! Plus, Tony's now offers their own beer. We got a pitcher of a craft brewed light lager for $6.50........a pitcher.........not a single beer.......a pitcher! You are not going to find that in Chicago! I love this place!

  • Jason M.

When I learned that the place hadn't changed since i was a child, I just had to bring my family in to relive being a kid in Valpo again. I read the reviews here before we headed out, and since most were bad we almost didnt go, but were glad we did. Its a strange place, anachronistic place, but not bad. The decor is like an old lodge, full of stuffed animal heads and old framed newspaper clippings. In the bar there are 2 full-size stuffed lions in glass cages, just as a I remembered. The prices are pretty cheap, and adds to the overall feel is that the place is a time warp. Beer was $2.75 for a 10oz mug, most of the dinners were under $9.95. The food is OK, I had Veal Parmesan and it was great. The tomato breadsticks were skippable, no flavor. They have 3 Floyds Beer (good), but they served it in an icy cold mug (bad) - you couldn't taste it, might as well have been Coors. Get this - no free refills on your soda. And the glasses are small. Despite the other reviews about bad wait staff, ours was actually really good. Cash only is pretty strange these days, but they're up front about it so hard to call a foul there.

I have never been able to decide if I love Tony's or not. There pizza is great, probably the best in the area really. There pasta changes every time I go in I think but it is usually enjoyable for the price.I think Tony's is one of those places where you have to have been enough to know what to order and how to order it to really enjoy it. Overall I like their food and I like that it's not a chain style place. I also like that the atmosphere and lack of windows kind of makes me feel like I'm eating where the mob eats. Now as for the service, I've never been impressed with the waitresses. They are typically rude and not very attentive (lack of sunshine from not having windows?) I also don't like the seat yourself thing because the staff isn't going to search you out. I hate that the drinks are no refills but the pop tastes flat when you buy pitchers like they are pouring in contents from various 2 liter bottles. The salads are usually not very fresh and over loaded in dressing and the free bread sucks (but order the cheap breadsticks, they are worth it). Overall not great, not bad. I like em.

  • Hal E.

Pizza! What else? Beer and pizza. Tony's takes you back. when pizza parlors were the thing. It hasn't changed in at least 60 years. When you are dining in the bar you can look at a full size stuffed lion ( in a pizza parlor?) you bet. Also stuffed heads on the wall, animals of course. Back to the pizza. I recommend the thin crust. Trying to keep the waistline down HAHA. The thick crust is popular with other family members. Reasonable price. There is family dining. .

Handtossed pizza was pretty good. Prices not bad. Not so sure about the decor. It looks like a hunting lodge. No complaint about the service.

Eh, it's tolerable pizza. Not crazy about the pasta. Last time I had their lasagna all I could taste was fennel seed. Good for a large group of people but there are better pizza options in town.

  • John H.

Rude waitstaff, horrible food (most of which is the cheap/industrial frozen food garbage , or from a can), they accept cash only. I honestly can't think of one positive about this place. Don't waste your time. I'll never go back.

Pizza

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.

Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.

Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
