Stopped in with a friend on a Saturday evening for a burger. I think prices are high for things like fries and other sides, but that may be just me. The food was tasty, but the restaurant was unorganized. Granted, it was close to closing time, but we had to request everything from silverware to ketchup and salt. Floors were littered with straw wrappers and other items that could have easily been picked up as the day went on. Because it was close to closing, we got the hovering routine from the wait staff while we were eating. They wanted our dishes and made no bones about it. Hurry up and slurp the last of your Green River, that glass has a date in the kitchen. It was just short of irritating was was rude. After the toe-dance about the dishes and then wiping the table, the stare-down started for the check. Closing time is 9:30. At 9:35, I could no longer stand the piercing stares and rather than take the time to split the check as my friend and I had intended, i gave them my credit card, which they then told me I had to bring up to the register, 4 feet away. Someone grew a brain in those seconds, and took the check and card to the front and completed the transaction, even bringing me the receipt and card to sign. We were then eagerly shown the door. I definitely did not feel welcome and won't be back to this location.

My friend has been raving about this place since I moved to town. So I finally went there for a meal. It is one of those vintage burger joints with all the memorablia all over the walls. I don't know what they do differently with there fountain machine, but the Coke was delicious and didn't leave that slimy aftertaste that Coke usually does. I had the Chicago Style Hot Dog where my friends all had burgers. The Chicago Dog was a typical Chicago Dog: sweet green relish, onions, mustard, hot peppers (I opted for chili and cheese as well) and was tasty. My friends all ordered the burgers and they looked delicious. My friends all agreed.

just got back from schoops. I've grown up in the area and have eaten schoops and pretty much all the locations. we live in valpo now, for the past 12 yrs and have eaten here often. BUT i will never be back. today was so terrible. i could try and say "well maybe they had a bad day". nope! we entered and the place was empty so my 8 yr old asked if we could site at the counter. so we did. since the place was empty the servers had allot of time on their hands and didn't seem to worried about cleaning,,,,the menus and salt/pepper, ketchup, etc where so so greasy. just nasty. usually is though. but tonight was special, there seemed to be even more grease.!then for the whole meal i had to watch them roll silverware at that counter! really? go in back or in the waitresses box by the restrooms. i watched the girl chew her fingers and nails 4 times while rolling. and she didn't wash in between chewings and rolling. i had to listen to them complain about boyfriends, facebook, and CUSTOMERS! yes customers. couldnt find the manager cause no one had on tags. they had no manners. rude. i dont know if the manager there or if the parents of those servers just did a crappy job raising those kids. so rude to talk about customers in front of customers. plain ole stupid. im done....

M'eh. What more can I say about Schoop's? I know people who out of deep nostalgia absolutely love this place. But, I just don't get it. Yes, it has a well-worn, 50s diner feeling. And, it's generally very clean, which I guess is a plus for a greasy spoon such as this. Although others have complained about spotty service, my experience has been pleasantly average. I really can't say much positive about the food. The burgers are just a half step up from fast food--thin, mealy patties fried in fat on a spongy, white bun. I give them slightly better rating because their breakfast is decent. Their biggest advantage is that they are open earlier than anyone else in the area, so they are great for crack-of-dawn breakfast meetings. But, when push comes to shove, there are at least two dozen other restaurants in the immediate vicinity I'd rather eat at.

Was told I had to eat here The burger was filling.. My only mistake was ordering the Irish nachos If you like a lot of cheese and bacon and ranch dressing you might actually like them Needed a cup of coffee after this meal

I love their burgers! I love the fact that they're crispy and fresh. The only reason they get three stars from me is because they end up being a little pricey. They up-charge you for almost anything you get on your burger, even cheese!

Just as good as I remembered from when my grandma brought me. Vintage themed decor but not lagging in the yum department! Staff were quick to acknowledge you and very pleasant servers. Patrons were varying in ages across the board. They have a kid menu & senior selections also.

Located in a strip mall, Schoop's was a stop we made on a road trip. Since we were not ready for dinner, I had fries & diet coke & husband had the green river shake & onion rings. He said the shake was good. I could not partake due to dairy allergy. Service was lack luster but that might be because we didn't order dinner & waiter was bummed. Not sure. We arrived at 5pm & it was almost empty but when we left at 5:20, it was filling up. I'm sure the hamburgers are good since they have been around since 1948.

I have eaten at a number of Schoop's restaurants since I was a child. From childhood to when I was a young adult, I frequently ate at the Schoop's in Calumet City, IL. I went to a Schoop's in Chicago for the microsecond that it was actually there (Irving and Damen) and then mostly to the Munster IN Schoops. I consider Schoop's a regional treasure, one that I sorely missed while living in Sacramento, CA (though the Squeeze Inn Burgers made almost equally satisfying Burgers). I have often thought or fantasized about Schoop's serving breakfast. I happened upon a Schoop's in Valparaiso and was pleasantly surprised that it served breakfast, which is noted on its outside marquis. Of course, this Schoop's serves the typical Burger fare that the other sites do, but also has a pretty full breakfast menu with omelettes, pancakes, waffles, and the like. I ordered "#8" with one egg, one pancake, and one bacon for $3.49 and a side of hash browns ($2.19). All was very good. Let's face it some places don't even do eggs respectfully. So, I'm happy when an egg tastes like and egg and so on. The pancake and hash browns (well done) was amazing. This particular Schoop's has a definite small town, honkey tonk feeling to it. It was 3/4 full, yet pretty quiet, no irritating din. There were also patrons roaming from table to table because they knew each other (I did say small town). The 5-6 year old girl sitting with her mom in the next booth was singing along with a country song that was playing over the speakers. I'm definitely not in Lakeview (Chicago) or Midtown (Sacramento). I highly recommend this Schoop's for breakfast. I need not sing praises about their burgers. All the locals pretty much know this as common knowledge.

Horrible. Imagine someone took a hamburger and ground it up into a paste and then spread it out on a grill top and cooked 'til thin and crispy. Then throw that "meat chip" on a dry bun and serve. Yuck. The Irish Nachos (fries with cheese, bacon, onions, and ranch dressing on the side) were good, though, and the place seems to mix their own Cherry Coke, which I like. But the service was awful despite no fewer than ten employees standing or sitting around. No refills, no one asked if I needed anything (I did, they forgot to bring ketchup). Just me and crummy dry burger trying desperately to wave down one of the many employees to were just goofing around. For this highly disappointing experience I paid top dollar, easily more than Five Guys, Red Robin, or any number of other places to get a burger. I can't imagine going back here for any reason.

When I was in high school, this was our breakfast place. Sure, it is a greasy spoon, but it is our greasy spoon! Owned locally, it is one of 2 or 3 in the area. In college, you'd meet up with friends on school breaks here and recently, when I was back in town visiting my parents, came back for another breakfast- Schoop's did not disappoint!! It's got a 50's vibe, offering typical diner food- hash browns, eggs, bacon in the morning, BLTs and grilled cheese for lunch and burgers with fries or onion rings at dinnertime. What I think sets them apart from other diner restaurants is the service and hometown attitude. It is comfortable and very quick. Pleasant service with a smile! When I was in high school, it was usually the owners or their teenage kids that were taking your order, so they really had a vested interest in their customers. It still seems like that today! Green River never tastes better!! I found it bottled at the grocery store, but it tasted like flat Sprite. Try it at Schoop's, or better yet, try it in a float or shake! It seems most sodas taste better here from their fountain! Located in a strip mall, the parking situation is great here. Almost always ample parking right in front of the restaurant.

Schoops has several locations around NW Indiana and a few in Illinois. This is one of my favorites. Burgers are consistently good. Fries and sides are excellent. The burger is a flat top grill fried masterpiece. Crispy edges and tender center with all the toppings you can imagine. I suggest washing it down with a Green River Soda. The chocolate shakes are bomb! Service and interior are alway great. Highly recommend. If you can't go to this one, I also suggest the Monee, IL and St. John, IN locations. Pretty much any Schoops you go to, you are gonna get a great burger.

I love this place. I've been a few times while visiting my girlfriends childhood home, and this is the best 'basic' burger I've ever had. They smash the patties to give the edge a little crispiness but they don't lose any of the juiciness that you sometimes get when using thin patties. They have a few variants, but the regular cheeseburger (or double or triple!) is the way to go. They also have a variety of syrups to add to your soda if you know to ask. The locals know about things like the 'green river' but they will make you a fantastic cherry or vanilla coke as well. The service is fast and nice, and the place is cheap and clean.

Great atmosphere, and good food. A little pricey for what you get ( 4 chicken tenders and sauce for 5.60, fries extra). I would go back there though and would recommend trying out.
