Chips and salsa-- oh my goodness yes. The salsa could be spicier but overall, really delicious. Got the shrimp tacos-- very tasty but again, had to knock a star off because it wasn't hot. Guac is $3 here too, that's too expensive. Rice and beans were like a thousand other places so nothing special. Would come back for a lunch special, but dishes did not seem too authentic. Left with enough for lunch the next day which is always a plus. Management seemed friendly too.

Friday night - not too late - this place was very busy!! We got lucky and were seated after just a few moments. Chips & salsa delivered to the table promptly. Our server was friendly and happy! My husband ordered the steak tacos and I had a shrimp chimichanga. Food was delivered rather quickly (considering how crowded it was) and it was hot and tasty!! We will definitely go back there again!

I think this place is genuinely over rated. The food was ok outside from being bland and our waiter was a complete ass. I also think the drinks were badly over priced.

This place is great! The lunch acupulco. Sit at the bar and have a rainbow margarita. Youll be drunk with one but the rest of your day will be smooth. The food is better than most if not every mexican i been too

For some reason, I thought this place was an upper class kind of place. We finally paid la cabana a visit and learned it's more approachable than previously thought. Felt like Applebee's in there. The TV was frozen, but I don't go out to eat to watch sports or anything, so I didn't care. Anyways, I had Texas fajitas, and they were good. We will be returning.

Always solidly good tasting Mexican food... Treat yourself and have Carnitas! They are really tasty here! Carnita tacos! Carnita quesadillas! Carnitas! It's a must. Their Regular house margaritas are great as well! And the prices at La Cabaña are very fair! Enjoy yourself!

Nasty restaurant experience I've ever had and i will never go back there. There was giant chicken bone in my taco and some kind of food on the inside of my drink. See pictures attached.

The ambiance is nice. There is a huge patio area that would be great to sit in on a nice day. We didnt wait long to sit, but the waitress was slow and not very helpful. I ordered a chicken taco meal. It came with 3 shredded chicken tacos, rice and beans. It was a little dry and not very flavorful. Also served on a flour tortilla. I didnt think to ask for corn cause every place I've gone serves them on corn. My husband got a giant burrito. He said it wasnt anything special. Really the best thing there was the salsa. They should bottle it up and sell it. I probably wouldn't make a special trip all the way out to Valpo just to eat there.

Ugh. Slow and poorly trained service, and flavorless, unattractive dishes. Mexican food is my favorite, so I came here expecting to enjoy it. Alas, no. The service was very slow overall. It took a long time to be seated, a long time to have our order taken, an unbelievably long time for the food to come out of the kitchen, and so on. The server didn't do basic things like remember who ordered what beverage or dish. I can understanding forgetting an item here or there, but when you show up and just start asking "who had X?" for everything, it's like you're not even trying. Our meals came out incomplete and we had to ask twice before we got everything. Actually, one person never did get a refill on his drink, and I do mean never. The menu was what you'd expect. Tacos, burritos, combo plates, etc. Complementary chips and salsa, which were unremarkable, but hey, they were free. Salsa was thin and bland. Chips seemed like out of a bag. I had a combo platter with a tamale, burrito, rice and beans. All of it was bland. The enchilada sauce had an odd flavor, maybe clove, which was at least interesting, but not good. My fellow diners said the same. Nothing we'd go back for. There are three filtered one-star reviews for this place that are spot on. The star rating for this place is artificially high as a result. It's a two star at best, I promise. Not a bad place for a margarita or a beer, I suppose.

Great restaurant. We eat there on a regular basis and had our rehearsal dinner there as well; they accommodated 25 people on the back room, no problem. They also brought out all our orders at the same time, and they were all hot! I usually get the shrimp cocktail or the ceviche-both are delicious. My wife typically gets the carne asada, which is very good, too. Mango margaritas are my go-to drink...make sure you try one!

I don't understand how anyone could have a bad experience here. We're here almost weekly and have never had a bad experience. The service is always spectacular and the food is always hot and NEVER disappoints. If you love authentic Mexican and have the time is 100% recommend here.

I love the food here. Been here 4X's Never disappointed. Best salsa and chips around. Carnita tacos are really good too. They use the real mexican queso cheese. Service is pretty good too. Dos Equis green on tap, my favorite. Very nice and clean atmosphere. Good Seating. Never let down.

The food is on point and the atmosphere is a good escape from campus and the dorms. Their margaritas are one of my favorites in Valpo and the staff are always friendly

Horrible service. I would give 0 stars if I could. Took 30 minutes to sit us. Told us that they did not have any glassware so they served our Margaritas on beer glasses. Food was gross too.

I love this place. The food and service is always excellent. The patio is awesome, and the servers are always fast and friendly, been here least a dozen times, haven't had a complaint yet. Shrimp Diablo is by far my favorite, but be warned, they are spicy!

It starts with the salsa and chips. I'm serious... if you bring out Pace picante and some store bought tortilla chips I'm gonna choke you. La Cabana had the decency to bring out a reasonably good salsa and chips. Good start! I ordered the fajita quesadilla which, from the picture, looked good. It was good and I mean good not in the sense of, "We are in northwestern Indiana" but good in the sense of "They got it down." Maybe it was a bit pricey but overall I was happy with the meal! I shall return!

I drive by this restaurant every day and am glad I decided to stop today. We were greeted right away by a friendly staff and everything was brought out promptly. I ordered the quesadilla la cabana. It had delicious chicken and shrimp inside along with fresh veggies inside. The rice I chose for my side was tasty. Not the best I've ever had but still good. I am very impressed with the service and new decor. We sat outside, very comfortable seating. I am giving 4 stars because the traffic noise did get a little loud sitting outside. It would have been nice to hear music instead. Regardless I will be returning soon. The bill for 2 entrees, 2 pops and complimentary chips & salsa was a little over $30. I hope this restaurant has better luck in this location then in the past.

AWESOME place! Best authentic mexican food in town, in my opinion. I've been to El Amigo, El Salto, and some other places but the food at this place blows all the others out of the water. I ordered a a vegetarian plate combo that came with one cheese enchilada, a bean and cheese burrito, and rice/beans. The beans were amazing, and the red sauce atop the enchilada was perfection. Their plate combos range from $8-12 dollars. They bring out chips & salsa which was pretty good. I liked the salsa (and you HAVE to enjoy the salsa or else you shouldn't go back, in my opinion)! I don't know about any happy hour prices or drink specials - I was just there for the food. The ambiance is very nice, and the service was great!

My wife and I have been going there once a week since they opened. I love the chips and salsa for starters and the loco tacos are fantastic. I also enjoy the large selection of hot sauces they have available as well. The service is usually fantastic and always very nice. In my opinion, the best place to go for Mexican food.

I am in between a on ratings. To explain my rating, over all I will give a 2 star rating mainly due to how the first woman greeted and sat us down, there was no welcoming at all, just a two of you, and sat us down. I could tell she had an attitude about something, not sure what, but very unprofessional. Our waitress I would give a 5 star as she did a great job in opinion. Issue is not her fault on my decision of not coming back ever again, I believe management needs to talk to the front girl, and the kitchen on their food and service. I come from a family that is multiracial, so I have been lucky to try foods from different ethnic backgrounds. Not to mention friends who are Restaurant owners, chefs, and master chefs. So critiquing restaurants is what I do at times. I got to say I read some the reviews on here and I got to be honest, most who said the food is authentic, I think need to go read the true definition of what it means to be authentic mexican food. The food is not 100% authentic, in my book, especially with how fast our meal was brought to us. In opinion I feel our food may have been frozen and reheated, just due to taste and flavor. I had at the beginning while reading over the whole menu, asked our waitress how big their burritos were as I like quantity in my meals. I ordered the burrito thinking it would be well sized and packed with ingredients. My Lady ordered a dish I forgot the name too, but brought flour tortillas, rice, beans, lettuce, shrimp, and couple other things. Our food was brought out to us within 10 - 15 minutes, usually those types of dishes take longer to prep if made fresh. The food tasted like it was reheated in a microwave. #1 Pointer to point out, I have been to dozens of mexican restaurants a burrito is not tortilla filled with shrimp and some ingredients. seriously if I wanted a taco I would have ordered a taco(that was the #1 thing that annoyed me about my meal). Not to mention later in the day my Lady and I got sick, I hate to say it, but be cautious on getting seafood dishes from this place, one's experience may be different than ours, I know it happens at a lot of locations, but I as well know fresh from not so fresh. The only thing I can say tasted fresh was my salsa I requested to be made spicy, That was the only thing I really liked sadly, but true. #1 issues with the menu, I have seen this with all restaurants, but La Cabana is the first I have run into that does not have a Mole dish on their menu, these guys seriously need at least one or more Mole dishes. #2 Prices, you guys need to research your prices more, some your items on menu are priced hirer than other restaurants, I am unsure if it is because this restaurant is in Valpo, or if it is another reason, but I have seen other places server better and real authentic dishes for better prices. #3 I am unsure if this is due to the door being open several times, but you guys have a real bad fly problem that needs to be looked into, while eating I noticed two flies flying around us, so that is another red flag not to come back to this location, like stated earlier, other may have a better time than we did, more power to those who go, but I am just trying to be honest. customer service and food preparations is the major reason not coming back again.

We went to La Cabaña today for lunch and the food was very authentic Mexican. Let me first start off by saying that the place has been completely rehabbed since the last time it was open and the changes are apparent in both the atmosphere and the food! We were a party of three and all of us ordered three different dishes. I had a burrito which was as big as the plate it came on, It was a combination of beef, chicken, and shrimp, came with re-fried beans, rice, and a typical garnish found in Mexican cuisine. All of the food was fresh and arrived hot. The spices in the food were consistent with the cuisine and it was very good. What was not standard was the presentation- the burrito came out folded in half like an omelet rather than a standard burrito folding. This was fine as I am not a huge fan of hefting an entire burrito up to my mouth and prefer eating them with a fork and a knife. The second dish ordered was a shredded pork dish which also come with the standard garnish and the elected charros beans. This dish was set apart by both its flavoring- the onions were partially caramelized before they were added to the pork stew and then finished, the result was a delightful addition to taste as well as a variation in texture. The third dish was the carne asada, which is a very common dish to almost every Mexican Establishment. The same technique of grilling the onions partially before combining it to the dish gave the same contrast in Texture and accentuation of the flavor, also came with rice and beans as a garnish. We also ordered an appetizer of guacamole... it was OK, but we were not crazy about the texture, it was way too creamy. We are fans of more of an old fashioned Guacamole. I would love to see them put it together table side so you can get a sense of the freshness of the ingredients. The end result were three empty plates and a four star review. There are a lot of Mexican Restaurants in Valparaiso, and this one strives to set itself above the rest in terms of the variety of the menu as well as the atmosphere, and I think it succeeds admirably! I will be back.

I've eaten here several times with my family. The food is consistently good. My favorite is the shrimp and chicken fajitas. The shrimp are large and well seasoned and taste very fresh, which can be a challenge in the Midwest. The margaritas are also excellent. I am also happy with the service. This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in the area!

This is our go-to place for Mexican food. The carnitas are delicious! I love the perfectly carmelized onions. The dining room is clean and service has been wonderful. Our waiter came by to check on us throughout our meal. The chips and salsa are very tasty and promptly refilled if you're like me and can't stop eating them!

I really enjoy the food at La Cabana, but have never had good service. It always takes forever to get drinks and chips. The outdoor area is beautiful so I would recommend going if you aren't in a hurry, but if you are try El Salto on the north side. It's much faster.

Excellent food, had the carnitas, delicious. Good service. prices reasonable. would not recommend the guacamole-it was not made fresh, was cold from fridge storage and tasted funny

People say on yelp they hope this place is a success well it's not. The food frankly is subpar unless you've never ate Mexican food. The service was worse. The area outside is not set for outdoor dining. It basically is chairs and tables with no blocking for atmosphere of the road. This place to me frankly is a hillbilly Mexican restaurant. Go down the street to downtown if you want great authentic Mexican food this place may stay open only cause people think Taco Bell is authentic Mexican, lol.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
