I had heard of a good catfish place in Thorntown, IN. My wife and I went there early on a Saturday night to try it out. They open for dinner at 5:00 and we arrived there around 5:15 and were quickly seated. This is a large restaurant with a bar section, and 2 separate dining areas. We were in the Main Dining Room and had a booth near the door which was fine at first, but by 5:45 a crowd was forming and we had people directly behind us and on one side brushing against our table as they waited. We had to move any food items far from this side of the table to avoid people dragging their coats over our Food. We lucked out that someone did not have a cold, or flu, and coughing over our food. Felt like we were seated on a bus with people standing all around us. It was a cold night and several people would hold the door open as they waited letting in cold air. The booths are small and fine for two people, but with four I would prefer a table. The tables, in our dining room were in the middle with booths on both sides. The tables are in a straight line, one after another with little space between them so not conducive to have a intimate dining experience. But this is somewhat offset by the quaint small town setting. The restaurant in located right in downtown Thorntown about a mile or so West of Highway 52. They have a picture of their building on their website. You can park on the street. Primarily an older, rural crowd and lots of 4 person groups. There is a small selection of wines on the menu, but not a listing of their beers, but the server said they had a full bar and numerous beers. We had heard about the onion rings, offered in two sizes and we ordered the small. They were great and the small was just right for two as an appetizer. We saw a number of these come out to the tables so it is very popular. We of course ordered the catfish, in this case the three piece dinner. You get a whole fish, less the head so have to deal with the bones. But if you know what you're doing it's not a problem. The dinner is normally 15.95 but was the special that evening for 14.95. You get two sides, and I selected their vinegar cole slaw {very good} and baked sweet potato. My wife ordered a house salad which was one of the side selections. It was a nice size but mostly iceberg lettuce. You can get brown sugar on the side for the potato. Dinner comes with couple small pieces of Texas toast which was ok. The least expensive dinner is chicken or ham steak at 13.99. Looks like they should have low overhead and I would have expected lower prices, or larger dinners. The fish was very good. It had a light breading and was cooked just right. The pieces were not large, so not really a lot of meat. I would say there is only 1/4 inch of meat on either side of the bone, and their three piece dinner is equivalent to many places two piece dinner. Somewhat disappointed in the experience as I was expecting more. I would rate as average. Considered giving it 3 stars, but settled on 2. If we had a better seating arrangement may have rated higher.
I am from this area and have been here many times. Stookey's is a great little place to have dinner! The onion rings are worth the trip alone...the catfish is great, I mean it's fried fish so if you go there expecting fried catfish, you won't be disappointed. I have had the steak here and its just okay...stick with the fish and the onion rings and you'll walk away very happy! Small Town Indiana at it's finest!
Happy Stookeys customer for many years. The owner, John, is almost always in and always greets us personally, makes sure everything was cooked perfectly and if he has the time will sit down and chat. We're not anyone special, that's just how they treat everyone who walks in the door. The Catfish and onion rings are famous and are a must, however I think their steaks are the best thing on the menu. Always cooked perfectly, great cuts, and include two sides (I go for the vinegar slaw and hash browns). If you're there on the weekend the prime rib is killer. They have a number of local craft breweries on draft which is always nice and a full bar. I just wish they we're open Mondays!
