One of the best hangover cures I've had in a long time! I thought this would be a typical greasy diner with tacky 1950's tchotchke, but I was pleasantly surprised. The choices for breakfast went in a direction I wasn't expecting...Irish hashbrowns and Green River milkshakes, for example. They played '80's music, which had me dancing in my booth in spite of my raging hangover. The only thing that would make this place better is a Bloody Mary.

Schoops is a great place for an old-fashioned dinery hamburger. We'd never been to this one before, but it stands up to all of the other ones I've been too. The Portage one is in an old-fashioned dinery building, too, all silver and shiny. The burgers are huge. You might think you want a double cheeseburger, but start with a single. They're grilled to be a little crispy around the edges, nice and juicy in the middle, overlapping the edges of your bun. Share a basket of fries (we like the curly) with your eating partner. And enjoy a vanilla coke, red cream soda, or green river -- straight from the fountain. I love me some vanilla coke. If you're like me, you won't have any room left when you're done -- but they do have ice cream and other yummy desserts. (I find it funny, by the way, that this Schoop's was not previously listed on Yelp -- this one was a campaign stop for Obama with Evan Bayh back in '08.)

My mom always said I should not say anything if I had nothing nice to say so I will keep this brief. My omelet contained CANNED spinach. What restaurant does that?? Not in love and I would not come back. The outside is super cute- the silver metal building is shaped like an old-fashioned diner car! And I did think the signs for the mens' and womens' restrooms were funny!

We went for the 1st time on Fri as we passed through town and went back again today on our way home. Kids loved the shakes and the burgers are GREAT! My daughter loved the chili and we enjoyed the irish nachos. We would go again the next time we are driving to Mi. Decor has lots of fun old pictures to look at.

They have one of the best hamburgers around, but their service is something to be desired. I've honestly never had good service here, but I keep going back because I love the food. The burgers are super thin but huge and definitely worth a try. I love that they mix their own cherry Cokes and make old fashioned milk shakes. You've got to try the green river!

Growing up we loved loved Schoops. The last few times I've been here though I have not been impressed. The food quality has gone down hill, the service is far below standard and it seems kind of dingy or dirty, I don't know. Just not very clean. They still have decent burgers but their fries, onion rings and desserts have taken a big hit.

This place is great for old fashion hamburgers. If you want something more than a typical burger than fast food then this is a good place to start. Their breakfast is great and served all day!

Decided one night (tonight actually) that cheeseburgers and milkshakes sounded good. Came in and sat down around 1915 with our kids. Waitress came up and we ordered waters and then my husband realizes that it's nearly bed time and tells her 2 waters instead of 5. I then tell him maybe one for all 3 to share instead and he says to the waitress 3 then. She then tells us waters are free, I told her it's not the money and it's that they'll piss the bed and she walks away flustered to discuss loudly with the other waitresses the "situation". So we left without ordering and went to buffalo wild wings. Basically, save your money. The service here was awful and disrespectful. How presumptuous to make assumptions.

Good place for burgers, especially if you like hand-formed, crispy-on-the-edges variety, like Steak 'n' Shake. I prefer this one to the one nearby in Valparaiso because the architecture is like an actual old-school diner, as opposed to a strip-mall storefront. The service is always prompt and attentive. My kids like the grilled cheese and burgers too, and they always get a milkshake.

I've never had a properly cooked burger here. The burger was dried out. the edges were charred and crumbly, they did not feather the patty like they should have, rather it was like it was a hand formed puck and then just cooked to bits. grosse. I even asked if they were training a new chef, which they were. They give a small amount of fries now too. The service was poor, and they didn't care when I told them about the burger.

The food here is really greasy and is seriously lacking in flavor. Also, the decor is very strange. I was eye-level with a picture of a baby covered in spaghetti and sauce. It was really distracting and kind of gross. I'm normally not picky about restaurant decor but having to stare at that picture for 45 minutes, I was forced to make an exception. I gave this place an extra star because they have a Green River shake on the menu. I ordered one and liked it. I would recommend taking a shake to go, but avoiding the food and the strange atmosphere.

My wife, my 4 year old,and myself decided to go to Schoops today in Portage Indiana.....as we sat down and ordered cherry sprite my wife noticed black flakes floating in her drink. She asked me did I know what it was? IT WAS MOLD!!!! I went to the front and spoke with who I believe was the manager and explained there was mold floating in the drink. She simply replied it is just the line. Then the waitress began to fill a new glass from the same fountain. I returned to the table and took he lid off my sons drink and again there was mold. I decided we were leaving and NEVER coming back. As we walked toward the door I told them this was unacceptable and we were leaving and they looked at us like we were horrible! They should be ASHAMED and I will NEVER return and will kindly spread the word. What a great place that went to hell. Dirty, rude, and inconsiderate!!! I believe they deserve 0 stars but the app is making me select one.

This place is mediocre at best. The service is garbage, the food is overpriced, and the interior is shabby. At least it's mostly clean. My last meal there was Irish Nachos and a Chicago style hot dog. The fries in the Irish nachos were extremely soggy. The Chicago style was a DISGRACE. The bun was soggy, the hot dog was poor quality, the onions were dry, no sport peppers, no mustard, and the relish was all mushed on one half of the hot dog. Absolutely AWFUL. Their burgers are all right if you like them flavorless and greasy. My recommendation is to head elsewhere. You can get MUCH better for the price.

I totally love this Schoops because I love the classic diner car feel of it. You can't find that anywhere else around here. Plus their burgers are probably one of the best too. Great prices as always.

Not a huge fan of this place; the main reason I keep coming back is that my daughter loves the milkshakes. The outside is charming, the inside is getting dated, the entire staff of teenagers definitely act their age, and the prices are way too high for the quality of food. But as long as my daughter craves it, I guess I'll be coming back.

Haven't been here in a long time and probably won't ever go back. I just wasn't thrilled and niether was my date. Ordered a double meat burger and order of fried mushrooms. It was ok but nothing special. Also was not as cheap as I thought it would've been... 33$ total for two people..... " it was burgers !" ....

Service is fast and friendly. Burgers are fresh not frozen. Blast from the past with Green River and cherry cola. French fries are good enough to take home as a left over, warm up later and still be good. Soups are excellent. Delicious sundaes and ice cream floats.
