I was really excited to eat here. The menu looked fantastic. The food, not so much! I had filet mignon medallions, 1/4 lb of crab, and garlic mashed potatoes. The mashed potatoes were good, my steaks were over cooked and kind of tough....shouldn't it have melted in my mouth? The crab was boiled in wayyyyyyyyy too much salt. The bread was luke warm and had bird seed bits all over it. Tough as well. The garlic bread appetizer is something I'm sure my bf's nephews could whip together. Disappointing. The service was VERY average. I don't think I will be making a re-appearance anytime soon or at all!

Used to be one of my favorite restaurants but the past 3-4 times I have been there it was awful. I ordered prime rib, then 30 minutes later they come out to tell me that they do not have anymore and I would have to order something else. I understand if you run out, but 30 minutes after I order??? Give me a break! The waiters/waitresses there seem to be incompetent and scatter brained, and do not come and check on you very often. Based on my last experiences, I will not be going back there ever again, and they are extremely overpriced, you can get a better steak down the road. Complete disappointment...especially because they used to be good, not so much anymore.

Love picking out my own steak. Service is impeccable. Nice romantic atmosphere. Would go there over and over. Food cooked to perfection without a flaw. Lovely

We walked in near 5:30pm on Saturday (Sweetest Day). It was busy, but we were seated right away. We ordered Bacon wrapped scallops & escargot as our appetizers. Both were very, very good. The scallops have a great wine sauce drizzled on top that made these the best scallops ever! My husband ordered a rib eye with blue cheese (he loved it) & I had the pan fried Lake Perch (great flavor). We both devoured the garlic mashed potatoes (so good). We left there full & completely satisfied and made plans to return.

Our last experience there was awful! Had a waitress that clearly hated her job, the French onion soup tasted like dirty dish water, and the food that I ordered was terrible! They served it on what looked like the dish they cooked it on and it was just slopped on there. Portions weren't worth the money either. Horrible presentation, Horrible food, and horrible service. They don't even deserve 1 star...

The server was nice and he had a positive attitude. You could tell he was new but the service and food quality was terrible. Management is very unprofessional and we were told that between 4-6 pm was the early bird special but were charged full price and told the charges were irreversible. Over priced for the service. Do not recommend this location

I will be surprised if this location is still around next year. The French onion soup was hardly warm. The steaks were over cooked. (which might explain why it took so long to be served in a nearly empty restaurant.) The kitchen is much better at the Valparaiso location. Drive a few extra miles and go to Valpo.

Yet another dinner stop for us on the way back to the East Coast from the Midwest. As we had a National Champion amongst us, we decided steak was in order, and this is what we found (sort of) close to the highway. The place was deserted on a Saturday night. We were the ONLY table there, and it was 8pm. My immediate first thought was "this place must be terrible." We entered and there was no host/ess, no servers in sight.... We were finally sat and ended up with a different server than we started with...no biggie, but the second one seemed far less competent. Everything we ordered took forever. Our salad app was probably the best, since it was an "endless" bowl. I probably should have just eaten the salad all night. Other friends at the table got the ribeye and filets, which at least was cooked very medium rare. My steak tips said they came "smothered" in Monterey Jack cheese and with mushrooms, but I wasn't expecting the cheese to be an inch thick, and for the mushrooms to be whole, and outnumber the steak tips 3:1. My tips were overcooked and a little sinewy, but I suppose that's to be expected since they're so small, and they were served in a hot skillet dish. The steak itself was pretty decent quality - I did manage a bite of ribeye, and it was good. The sides, however, weren't awesome - the mashed potatoes were kind of dry, and the bread was cold, hard, and generic. While the place wasn't terrible, as I had at first considered, it certainly wasn't a place I'd go to again.

Had a great experience and a great steak, cooked to perfection. Also our waiter recommended the coconut shrimp for an appetizer and we were so glad he did, absolutely delicious, my wife doesn't like seafood at all yet she ate half the shrimp appetizer.

This place isn't just a disappointing restaurant, it's a scam of the magnitude that should be illegal. You will have a better experience and meal at any chain steakhouse restaurant, for a fraction of the price.

Wife and I always love going to Kelseys in Valpo. Never have had a bad meal, service or experience there. The portage location leaves a lit to be desired. The service was slow and the meals were not at the proper temperature. Won't return.

We went to this restaurant on Mother's day. What a big disappointment!! First when we arrived, we ordered drinks and an appetizer. Then we ordered our meal. The server was clearly not familiar with the menu. We waited over an hour after we ordered for our mean to be served. Three of us ordered salad, and it was served in a small bowl full of brown lettuce, two tomatoes and too many croutons for three people. My steak was overcooked, so was my daughters. The steamed veggies was maybe 1/2 cup and were obviously from frozen. It then took forever for us to get the check. We were there for over 2 hours. Do not waste yo ur time or money at this place. Also at the end of the meal, they brought out this tray of so called desserts that loo k like they came from the Bakery outlet store.

This place use to be awesome!! Until the new managers took over. Don't even bother wasting your time here. Longhorn isn't far. It's a Friday night and you come in expecting a wait...15-20 minutes was quoted but as we waited you could see at least 5 empty tables. We were sat and our server arrived about 10 minutes later. Our drinks were delivered promptly, and this was the only prompt part of our experience! We ordered an appetizer which arrived in 10 minutes, at that time I asked if we could have the bread that came with our meal. 10 minutes later out server clears the plates and I ask for bread again. She rudely responded with "yep, when I bring your salad" but I wanted it now!!! If I wanted it with my salad I would have asked for it with my salad. It took 30 minutes into our visit to receive our bread and salad! 1 hour into our visit the food arrives. We ordered two Monterey Filet Tips -one was Medium well the other medium. The medium was cooked rare-medium rare and when we sent it back, the waitress rolled her eyes. At the same time the guests behind is sent back their prime rib because they were cold. A few minutes pass and our undercooked filet tips came back.....WELL done. There seems to be a problem with the new mangers here. Maybe they have never owned a resturant....I really don't know. I do know, they have really run this place into the ground. Once a great place to done and the last few experiences have been less than desirable. Don't waste your money here!!! Go to Longhorn.

No Thank You. When we moved here from the south suburbs of chicago we were looking for a nice steakhouse. My family has eaten here a few times because we were told it had the best steak in town. This is the "nice" restaurant in hobart. Sorry folks...you need to venture out some more. We gave them several tries and the food is not that good. definetly not worth the money. We have 3 small kids so the atomsphere was good for them and they are happy with the food but if you"re looking for a NICE dinner with great food you should go to Gino's Steakhouse in Merrillville or Bistro 54 in Downtown Hobart. (kids need to act like adults here though) Both have delish steaks and also real good fish choices. These are are go to places for a nice dinner...not kelseys. We go to Texas Corral when we have the kids with...they love the peanut shells on the floor. fyi- Bistro 54 is a little quaint and is only open thurs-sunday and their menu changes every week....Whatevers fresh and in season I'm guessing.

Ever since I received a moldy dessert at this location with only a quick apology and only the dessert being taken off my bill, I would NEVER EVER go here again.

Everyone in the area will tell you Kelsey's is the best steakhouse around, they fail to tell you that it's the only steak house around. The menu doesn't have much variety and if you're going to go with a small menu you better have perfected what you do have. It looks average inside and the food is average. There is nothing special about the food, certainly nothing special enough to make you want to pay the prices they charge you for it. You'll pay triple here what the food is worth. Do yourself a favor, if you're in Portage and in the mood for a steak grab the south shore and head to Chicago. I bet even with the train fare you'll pay the same you would at Kelsey's and get much better, higher quality food.

If you like filthy, generic, & over-priced...you'll love this place. Do yourself a favor and SKIP IT.

I don't know what all the fuss is about. The steaks are alright. I'd rather go to Texas Corral.

Great steak, probably the best in Portage and even the surrounding areas, but it can be damn expensive (of course, what steak house isn't?) The atmosphere inside leaves a bit to be desired, nothing very special, and non smokers even get a dose of nicotine due to bad circulation (at least when walking in, sometimes even when dining in non-smoking, although not as often). They are remodeling though, so there may be a lot of change coming to this place. Personally, I've only had the steak, they make great stuff, in fact, I'd recommend passing on the A-1 - these guys are flavorful. I usually get mine covered with blue cheese and every time it's come out perfect - just know what you're getting into when you tell them how you want your steak done. Unlike many steak restaurants, they WILL give you a medium when you ask for a medium instead of cooking it so it's done to the center as to avoid any conflict with confused customers. Overall, if you're looking for a good steak and you really have plenty of money to spend, check the place out.
