Yummy! Great fresh food. The falafel and eggplant pita wrap is awesome.

Really enjoyed this place, it is perfect for pick up or for dinning in. It has several vegan and vegetarian options and is very affordable.

Great place went to for the first time today. Waitress was super friendly and helpful in choosing what to order. Apple/cranberry/walnut salad was HUGE, with very tasty house dressing. Chicken kabob was moist and flavorful. My favorite was the nicely seasoned and textured beef shawarma. Looks like a family-run place which makes it even better. I highly recommend Mishkenut!

I've dined in here three times. The food is good, but the overall experience unfortunately declined with each visit. Rather than deleting the previous two reviews, I've kept them up just in case you want to read the full experiences. I usually just go here for take-out if I feel like munching on a shawarmah. The first visit was on December 12, 2012 for my older sister's birthday., that was pretty much first experience of Middle Eastern food (falafel, hummus, kebabs, koftas). It was very good and decent meal. The second was visit was on June 17, 2013, I visited there for lunch and ordered their "Mishkenut lunch special" for $5.95. On the window, they make it sound like you get a lot but as usual, they gyp you. It came with one kebab, one falafel (literally one patty), one kofta, some vegetables and little puddle of hummus. They also forgot to give me my pita bread, and ran out of lentil soup. Okay, my third time dining visit, November 30, 2014. I had their chicken shewarma ($10.99) and a 6-piece falafel appetizer for about $3.50 or something like that. The lengthy time waiting for your food is understandable, I got nothing against that because Arabic and Mediterranean cuisine is very intricate. But to be totally honest, the service just got really dissatisfying. A front desk clerk (permanent position) could be really nice, instead of two people running around to accommodate multiple people or groups - one of them is cooking, the other is taking orders and all that good stuff. The falafel also isn't the greatest-tasting. It tastes a little too burnt. I've had better fafafel at Aladdin Pita. By the time I devoured my meal, it took about five or six trips from one of the employees to the kitchen and the dining room and back, until I had to finally turn around and tell the dude, "excuse me, can I have the check"? Half of those times, he was out in the back doing something. I don't want to sound like an impatient little brat and that's obviously not what I'm trying to do, I understand he was helping other people [at times] but after setting their meals down, they could clearly see two empty plates in front me and it took having to call the dude to give me my check and a refill (one refill). I'm saying this because it would be beneficial and less work for the two. So the food, it's a four-five star, I love it - it is home-cooked and quality Mediterranean and Middle Eastern fare but the service.....eehhh...could do much better.

My husband and I first tried this place not too long after it opened. It was our anniversary and we got there near 9 p.m. Though we were the only couple in there, the owner's daughter, who was our server, told us to take our time. She recommended everything from appetizers to entrees, and she knew what she was talking about. Since then, we have gone many, many times (and introduced our friends) and have always been pleased with both the food and service. The hummus here is the best I have had. Ask for extra jalapeno, it's not hot, just spicy. I am a chicken shawarma junkie, so I always have the sandwich with yogurt. The hot chicken combined with the cool yogurt and crunchy cold vegetables is a winner every time. My husband has branched out and tried a number of different sandwiches, with his favorite being the eggplant. We almost always leave with leftovers and the chocolates they give you at the end, well, they are worth the trip alone. If you have room after the meal, the baklava is also really good. Bottom line: Consistently good food and awesome service (though it is sometimes a bit slow depending on who's working) make this place a go-to favorite for us!

I go to this place every now and then. They make some pretty good dishes. I love the hummus. It is fresh and delicious everytime. I've had a few of their pita sandwiches and they are always good. I'm not a huge fan of the interior of the restaurant, but it's not like it offends me or anything--it's just very plain inside. Service is always polite and timely. One very nice touch is that they give you a little dark chocolate and nut cluster to satisfy your sweet tooth at the end of the meal. Very reasonably priced, too.

Very good food. You will be suprised. Pros: - The Food! It's very good. We have been here multiple times. Everything we have tried has been good. - Very Friendly service - No wait. - Casual Atmosphere - Price. You get a very good value. Cons: - Not very visually appealing atmosphere. We will be back! Hoping more people will continue to try it.

Small portions. They dId not offer pita chips on table the way Mexican places have tortillas. Did not order dessert because service was slow. Left hungry.

We love this place. We usually get the combination plate, with extra pita bread and an order of grape leaves. I grew up in a Greek house where grape leaves were homemade and amazing. This place is the first place that is just as good as those. Staff is really friendly, and somehow she remembered me on the PHONE, after coming in person about two months earlier. I'm pretty sure they're in with the NSA on that one ;) But they're the best. Love this place.

My boyfriend and I went to Mishkenut Mediterranean tonight and the food was delicious! The service was so awesome! The restaurant reminded me of a restaurant out of Hyde Park. We both had the lamb kabobs with rice. I tried the Lebanon tea for the first time ever, it was great on a cold night! I will be a regular there before I venture over to Three Floyds.

Went here once and wished I had tried this place much earlier while working in the area. I split an order of hummus, which came with toasted, soft pita bread. I ordered the eggplant and falafel sandwich, and it was absolutely delicious and extremely filling. The falafel was cooked perfectly (some restaurants make them too oily or use an excessive amount of breading) and the roasted eggplant had a hint of sweetness. The service was superb, food was cheap, and it was perfect for a casual, work lunch. What more could you need? I look forward to returning the next time I'm in town!

Coworkers' favorite place in the area. Chicken shawarma was good. ALl of the chicken dishes (sandwiches, salad) seem to involve exactly the same chicken, so you know what you're getting, although the meat wasn't technically that shawarma-ey. On the sandwich I had a choice of yogurt or hummus, and the yogurt turns out to be a pretty huge glop of Greek yogurt, which was nice, and I'm sure the hummus would have been similarly hefty. Food took a while, but it came out steaming hot. Prices are great, I think under $5 for a sandwich. The cranberry salad is huge, and definitely a favorite among my coworkers. Coworkers also recommended the falafel. The place was absolutely freezing, and a blast of cold air came out when you opened the bathroom door, but hey, maybe they keep prices down by not turning on the heat, so I'll just need to remember to wear appropriate layers when I go there in the winter.

If you are going to eat Mediterranean food, this is the best place in the neighbourhood. Home-cooked meal with so many variations. Everyone is so friendly and the service is great too. Not to forget that they have good portions of meal and are well priced. I am a fan of their phenomenal Kabobs, Red Lentil soup, Falafal, Hummus and Pita and Shwarma. I love going here and will continue to.

This restaurant is such an awesome find. It is not often that you can experience a truly international cuisine in NWI. Munster has a true gem here. The servers are young, vibrant, friendly, and knowledgable. They have taken time to get to know my 5 year old, to the point that she would rather eat at Mishkenut than McDonald's! The food is wonderfully seasoned! Just the right mix of herbs and seasonings. The chef is wonderful, and really takes pride in his cooking...you can tell. Whether it's a lamb kabob, chicken schwarma, or falafel (sp?) sandwich you can't go wrong at Mishkenut!

    (5)
  • Lindsay M.

We were thrilled with our dinner here. We devoured the falafel and hummus, marveling at how fresh they both were. The entree portions were giant and both dishes (chicken kabob and chicken shwarma) were super tender and well seasoned. The homemade chocolates put us over the moon. Mishkenut is definitely a restaurant at which we'll become regulars.

Ok I guess I'll be the first to say it... We tried this place after watching all of the Avengers go out for shawarma... You know that scene, after the credits when they're all sprawled out with full bellies after listening to Tony Stark and going out for it after their big fight scene... yeah, we kinda mimicked that part... the absolutely stuffed part not the running around throwing punches part... We had the owners son as our waiter, who I was surprised told us he used to work at a "commercial" Italian joint in the next town over before coming to work for his dad, and on Friday he cooks to give his dad a day off! How cool is that? Never having any of the food before I asked his honest opinion about the dishes I was considering (as my fiance already had made up his mind - he was having shawarma!) He was not shy on his opinion and I ended up going with the Chicken Kabobs and LOVING THEM! My guy also loved the shawarma! Plus they give you these cool little chocolate nut dessert cups with your check. As we were eating I noticed that every table that got up to leave told him that they would definately be back! And honestly, when we left we said the same thing! This place is great, and so intimate. Great service + great atmosphere + great food = Happy Foodie!

Like so many others, I have driven past this place on Ridge Road for almost two years until we finally stopped in the fall. I can say I am so glad I did. The authentic Mediterranean food is delicious and the portions are huge and the price is extremely reasonable. Now, it's my favorite place to eat in NW Indiana. The food is outstanding. I have had all the appetizers, the Steak Kabobs, Chicken Kabob, Falafel, Beef & Chicken Shwermak, my husband loves the Beef Stroganoff. The dinners are served with Safron Rice and side cooked vegetables. The hummus is the best I have ever had. The Hot Lebanese Tea with Mint and Pine Nuts is a special treat before dinner. We always order several orders of Baklava to take home, because we're normally so full but we have dessert for later and it's also outstanding. After dinner, you get a homemade chocolate candy with nuts & raisins and it's delicious! This is a family run restaurant and it's small and yet so special. The decor is minimal like other's have stated and I feel if it was a White table cloth dining experience there would be a whole lot less petty complaints because when it comes down to the nitty gritty of it, the food is really good. When we go to Mishkenuts, I know I'm going to get a consistently delicious, hot, fresh, yummy lunch or dinner. The wait time that others seemed to have commented on is because the food is cooked fresh and to order, so you may have a little wait, but when the food comes out hot, fresh and it tastes so good, that's what counts! The staff is very friendly and there are times you go in and you are the only people at a table and then people start streaming it. I wish we would have found this place sooner. When it comes to going out to dinner it's not a chore figuring out where to go any longer, because we all agree on Mishkenuts!

Mishkenut is by far and away one of my favorite spots back home. Whenever I make a weekend trip to visit family, Mishkenut is always on the list of "foods I can't get in Memphis." Sure, we have Mediterranean food, but none of it holds a candle to this place. Favorite menu items? That's difficult simply because I've never had anything here I didn't like. The hummus is one of my favorites, paired with the falafel and grape leaves. Their bacon wrapped dates are not to be forgotten either. They are made with turkey bacon- which seemed so odd to me at first, but once I tried them it made all the sense in the world. The kabob and falafel wraps are delicious and killer sized portions for the price. If you want something off the dinner menu, go for the stroganoff- indescribably amazing people! Their baklava is the best I've ever had and those handmade chocolates? Yeah, I still crave them on a random Tuesday night all the way out here in Tennessee. Everything here is reasonably priced, which makes it difficult to not order the entire menu. I've noticed in many reviews people knocking the decor here. Yeah, it's in a strip mall and it's pretty vanilla and boring. My husband and I often discussed how we hoped they would drum up enough of a following that they'd be able to move to a bigger free-standing location someday. We made a solid effort to try and get them that business, I think I've told anyone I've met who lives within a 45 mile radius of this place how great it was. Regardless, there's something endearing to me about the ambiance here. It's BYOB and the family that owns and runs the place is incredibly welcoming. It's weird because I've never experienced it anywhere else, but the cramped, overly bright, ugly interior is part of the package that I miss so much.

What a great add to the area. Family run and excellent food. We get the house platter to go and can get through for at least two meals. Chicken and steak are tender, flavorful and juicy. The hummus is a winner every time. Don't miss!

Staff is amazing! The daughter remembered my mom and I after serving us ONE time and talked to us like we were old friends. The other staff is just as awesome. As far as the food goes, it's all to die for. Lasagna, awesome. Tabbouleh, awesome. And I've just never had falalfal that damn good. I always leave Mishkenut feeling both satisfied and happy.

Really this is a solid 3.5 star place But since it is hard to find enchain places in Indiana had to up the star. The menu is extensive enough that you feel that you must come back and try something else. But not overwhelming. What we had: Chicken kabob wrap Falafa wrap Chicken shawamana Red lentil soup I was quite underwhelmed with the soup -- it was watery and lacked good lentil flavor. Overall this little place is a find. Something delicious, nutritious, and inexpensive in an area overrun with fast food and chains.

  • Gregory P.

This one is a small little gem, with the most fantastic people running the place. The items are made from scratch (from the samboosa to the chocolate treats that come with the check). Large portions and great prices. This place is a weekly stop for me. Try the eggplant and falafel sandwich...as a chronic meat eater, it's the one sandwich I could give up meat for. And yes it is fresh, if you sit in the right spot you can watch them cook it. Friday nights are a bit busy so you may not get in right away (the place holds maybe 40 people). Try earlier in the week first.

We had a sampling of 5 dishes, and everything was pretty good. the people there seemed very nice. not the greatest decor, but not dirty. i wish indiana would let people drink (no more byob apparently). the only problem i had was the hours of diarrhea afterwards :( somehow though....i think i would go back (?)

One of my favorite things in the entire world are surprises. When I saw this restaurant I was so excited to eat authentic middle eastern food with a dash of eastern european flavor. The surprise? It went BEYOND expectations. My sister and I shared a chicken and steak kabob entree with a bunch of little appetizers and a piece of baklava for dessert. The entree: totally, 100 percent amazing. The meat was cooked to perfection, seasoned to perfection and sizzled, literally sizzled, when they brought it to me. The rice, fabulous and grilled veggies, to die. It was one of the best plates of food I've have in a WHILE. The ambiance of this restaurant is also so entirely awesome. The family who owns it are all about making their customers happy. The girl who served us (Hal, I believe) was super cute and made us feel like we had known her for ages. I know many people wouldn't think of Munster, IN as their to-go spot for food. But please, I'm begging you, if you are ever in the area go to Mishkenut. I promise you will be just as surprised as I was!

I don't know how I missed this place. One day during lunch, I was craving hummus. I checked Yelp for the closest hummus infusion, figuring that it would be far away. I was so happy that this place was so close! A co-worker and I ate here - and we have since been back several times. We have had almost all of the menu. The daughter and son (I assume) that work during the day are so wonderfully nice. The food? Fantastic. We have had many schwarmas, falafel, lentil soups, prune rolls (with BACON, people! you should try this!), grape rolls, baba ghanouj, kebabs, rice, salads, oh so much good food! This place is very very clean. I also like the chocolates that come with the bill! We have had such a good time discovering this place and we will continue to go back.

  • Lori J.

I love this place! The hummus, baba ganouj, My favorite is the chicken shawirma in a pita. I sometimes try a new appetizer and I am always impressed. The family who runs it are very nice and helpful with the menu when I bring new friends there...I wish they would redecorate a bit but I still come back for the food! Excuse my misspellings!

We drove over from Mokena, IL after hearing about Mishkenut. We were not disappointed, the food is excellent! The press their own olive oil and everything was fresh. Very casual, comfortable environment. If you like mediterranean, this place is worth checking out. I would drive over again just for the lamb kabob with yogurt sandwich.

Food is absolutely wonderful. Family owned business. Everyone is ssssooo friendly. I always get hummus, apple, cranberry salad which I don't think is on menu but a must have. Chicken/Lamb/beef kabobs or shawerma are finger liking good. I've had veal, well my son did and I couldn't keep my hand out of his plate. :) Yum!! I would recommend it to everyone. I've taken many out of town friends and family members here.

Mishkenut, as others have alluded to, is indeed a hidden gem. Stuck in the middle of store fronts on Ridge Rd in Munster Indiana is hardly an ideal location, but for those in the know it's a place that offers quality, authentic food at relatively inexpensive prices. Some may balk at a few of the higher priced items (I'll admit I probably won't be ordering their filet mignon anytime soon.) but overall this place is easy on the pocketbook. The soups and appetizers are really great, and the eggplant pita was especially tasty. Their falafel is damn good too. Family run, the personal touch to their service really makes the experience well worth it. For the location, it's really a find. Mishkenut is definitely a place I have no problem frequenting.

  • Gary W.

Great food with great service. I suggest the grape leaves; well seasoned. The "special" for $25.00 feeds two easily and covers all the bases. Chicken shawerma is not typical; very tasty and highly recommended. Family owned and operated with that "home kitchen" feeling. Don't expect the Taj Mahal, but expect amazing food that you will be back for again and again.

I have one word to describe this place: GENUINE! This is one of those 'hole in a wall' spots that serves delicious home cooked meals along with the warm & welcoming service consistently which equals to = AWESOME!! My 4 yr old son & I love Mishkenut.... his favorite the chicken schwarma and I love the chicken kabob; i always have to order an extra side of rice because my son cannot get enough!

WOW! This place is a delightful find in a storefront location next to the best burger joint in Chicago-land (The Original Schoops). BYOB. I stopped for a decent bottle of Chianti and planned to enjoy a solo evening with a book and food. Before my salad showed up, the couple next to me brought me a glass of the incredible Burgundy they were sharing - a glass would probably cost more than my entire meal! We chatted about wine and food. The couple at the next table joined in. Its that kind of place - you make new friends while waiting for your food. I started with the the tabula salad - very green! At first it seemed kind of grassy. But the lemon dressing was subtle. You could taste the parsley and little bits of green onion and tomato. I did finish the entire plate. My lamb kabob came with rice or steamed veggies - I asked for both. The marinade was wonderful and the lamb was grilled to perfection - medium rare. I asked for a sauce for the plain white rice. That confused the waiter and I ended up with yogurt. It was pretty good. Several times during the meal, the waiter described a dish by saying "My mom does this..." Two brother waited tables and Mom and Dad were in the kitchen. The family is Palestinian and l cannot figure out why they happened upon Munster, IN to open a restaurant but, boy, am I glad they did! I had the cheese triangle for dessert figuring it would go well with the last of my Chianti. It did. Sweet cheese, phyllo and honey served warm. Mmmmmm. The ambiance would be improved with REAL glass wine glasses - yeah, they actually have plastic wine glasses - and candles vs. the overhead lights turned on at dusk. Oilcloth tablecloths with plastic coverings can be forgiven as there are cloth napkins and the place is immaculately clean. I cannot wait to go back and try the veal and salmon. Each of the menu items is described in detail (thank you!) which is great for those of us who really don't understand the cuisine. My bill came to $17.05 - what a bargain! Try Mishkenut before they get a liquor license and move to a bigger location. Or worse, out of NW Indiana.

Wonderful place. Everything is delicious, and they have reasonable prices for a large amount of food. I love the vegetarian sampler meal, but everything I've tried here has been just great. I also love the apple, walnut, feta salad. It might be my favorite restaurant in the area, and I go here as often as possible! Polite, efficient servers.

The lunch specials are excellent! This is a great middle eastern resturant. The other 2 in the area do not even compare to this one. The kitchen is clean, saw the cook wearing plastic gloves while handling the meat. Loved that. I will not go anywhere else in the region for middle eastern food. This is it.

I work nearby and needed to find a place for lunch. Yelp directed me here, and I'm delighted! I had the falafal and my friend had another sandwich. I've had falafal in Israel, so I know when it's the real thing. This one was and it was DELISH! The perfect amount of sauce to cucumbers to tomatoes to falafal all perfectly wrapped up in a pita. We were really happy and are looking forward to returning. Soon! The bill came with a delightful, homemade chocolate treat. YAY!

This is a great addition to NWI. The restaurant is run by a family who takes great pride in their food. Our waitress was the daughter of the owner, I believe. She was very helpful and honest about the food, her favorite dishes, etc. I have to say I was a bit dissapointed in the pita bread and falafel. The pita bread is not homemade, and you can tell. While the hummus was quite good, it wasn't as good when using the stale pita bread. The falafel were not good or bad - I have had better and I have had worse. The reason this restaurant gets 4 stars (aside from being family-owned and friendly) is for their entrees. Wow, the lamb kabob, chicken schwerma, and beef kabob were amazing. Honestly, every bite of food was better than the one before. When the check came, the waitress brought us some delicious homemade chocolates. Prices were pretty good - some entrees got a bit expensive. But overall a really good experience.

Great "family run" business. I try my best to support small businesses. Mishkenut staff knows how to make good food. I ordered take-out chicken shawarma sandwiches, kufta kabob sandwich, baba, falafel and grape leaves (lamb). Very reasonable prices and the servings are nice and big. The lunch prices are a steal for the quality of food that you get. The girl working this evening was probably the owner's daughter and was very polite and excited to provide good service. This is the second time we have had food here and will definitely frequent it more.

This place rocks. I have eaten here a number of times, and tried at least half of the menu at this point, and haven't run into a sub par meal yet. The Lunch Special is the deal of the century. You get 4 different entree pieces (chicken, steak, kufta and falafel) along with rice and a really good salad . Oh yeah, you also get pita and hummus. Price? $7.95. A house made chocolate with the check makes it even better. Don't hesitate to give this place a try.

TL;DR - Stop reading and go now! Stopped in on our way to FFF and boy oh boy were we rewarded. This little hole in the wall had some of the best Mediterranean food I have ever had in my life. We got the Mishkenut special, it started with fresh hummous, falafels and pitas 10/10 Then the meat showed up, I am not a huge fan of lamb so the kufta was not my cup of tea but from what I understand it was excellent. All of the meat was WAY better than we were expecting. The rice was perfectly done. 10/10 Our server, owner, cook was wonderful to deal with. The little chocolates on top of the check were the icing on the perfect meal. The meal for 2 of us was $31 and we had enough left overs for a full meal the next day for 2. Anytime I find myself in Munster I will be back here. Guaranteed.

We unexpectedly were in Munster and yelped this place for something delicious. The food was great, the portions were large, and we had pretty good service, even though the place was slammed. I had a combo special, and they catered to my wife, who is gluten and dairy free. She had meat and rice platter The decor is unassuming, and the prices were more than fair. Will definitely go back, and they recently opened a place in Wicker Park/Chicago that we will check out.

Aw yeahh.. found some good food in an area I'm unfamiliar with. Score! There was one lady working when we visited and she did everything, yet nothing suffered. She kept everything together, all tables were taken care of and she did so with a cheerful attitude. She was awesome! Food wise we had a great sampler of many items, hummus, falafel, mushrooms in cream sauce and spinach pies. For our entrees we had rice and mixed meats; lamb and chicken shish kabob, chicken shawarma and lamb kofta. Though it's hard to pick any, my favorites were the spinach pies (fresh, tangy, pillowy and delicious) and the mushrooms in cream sauce. These had a light spice to them which balanced out the heavier cream. Our friend had never had falafel before and he loved these; crispy and fluffy..they were very good! I loved how all of the meats were cooked perfectly, all of them stayed juicy and nothing was overcooked, dry, or rubbery. I point this out because that often happens especially with kofta and chicken. Between service and food our dinner was flawless.

Surprising find in the middle of Munster. All food cooked to order, with friendly service. My 7 year old pronounced the homemade chicken nuggets the best he's ever had - and the grown ups loved the beef schwarma, kufte and steak. Hummus is also homemade and delicious. Mishkenut would hold up to any big city Middle Eastern place any day.

Have gone multiple times over the years and recommended this place to many people. The falafel and hummus are very good, and they have a good lunch special for those interested in large portions. I will admit my last visit wasn't the greatest of experiences as there is sometimes a delay in getting served, but they are a family business that is passionate and cares about their lovelihood. Definitely worth a try. Make your own decisions before reading others reviews.

I've never dined in here but I've picked up food plenty of times. They never disappoint!! First things first you HAVE to get the homemade hummus!! I've tried all of the falafel wraps-so good! The veggie plate is my go too! Yummm!! Salads, appetizers, chicken. You can't go wrong here! Thank you mishkenut for consistently preparing fresh, delicious food for me!!

I really enjoy this place and the hospitality from the host. I could tell its a family owned business but they make sure you feel like family when you eat there... 5 stars all the way

First time eating here - absolutely delicious!! Great value also. Prices are very reasonable. The chicken shawerma was amazing. My friend always orders the kufta kabob sandwich with hummus and he loves it. We also got the baklava and it was incredible!! I have had a lot of baklava and this one was amazing - do not miss out on this! Very friendly staff and great service as well. They ran out of our funghi mushrooms, so they only charged us half for that appetizer and gave us a free piece of baklava. I will definitely be back soon!

Last three visits have been disappointing. The quality and flavor of food is inconsistent. My frozen veggies were still frozen last night. For the 2nd time, they didn't have what I requested in stock. There's only one person cooking at a time, so don't go on a Saturday night. If the dining room is full of white people, expect to get your food last. Never fails. Even if my party is the first one there with the least number of people and complexity of order, always last to get the food.

nice hidden gem! it was delish. Totally agree with the need to be patient. 2 workes.. that were cooking... waiting tables... working carryout ..etc.... but worth the wait. Had the beef kabobs... hummas... and shawarma.. some salad with pita chips inside and falafel.. awesome.. found out they also have a place in wicker park.. Good to know!

Awesome. And delicious. Wish I grew up in the Mediterranean. The food is so fresh and good. The cook came out to us, and told us a little about what we were ordering. Made some suggestions and we were totally impressed.

It's a little hidden, but glad I found it. The food and service was amazing. I highly recommend the dinner for 2. It was very filling.

Are you people crazy giving this place 4 1/2 out of 5 stars?! This place was just brutal. I went here because there aren't very many credible mom&pop restaurants around town, but I saw this place on yelp it had good reviews so I was excited to give it a try. Walking in you can tell this place needs a decorating makeover but I'm not Martha Stewart so whatever. Looking around the room there are about 15 people in the dining room, several random people picking up their take out, and yet for some reason, there are only 3 people working the entire restaurant. There are clearly no specific roles for them - they all just do every job. The waitress is also the hostess, cashier, and cook. How am I supposed to feel about that? The same person wiping down the tables and taking payment is also handling my food. Oh btw nobody is wearing a hairnet or even a hat. But I'm not the FDA either. Oh yeah- who is doing the dishes? All of this and I haven't even touched on the food yet. My buddy and I ordered falafel for an appetizer and chicken shawarma for meals. First off how did it take 20 minutes for a deep fried appetizer? It was tasteless and gross. Just a big crunchy ball. We waited for another hour after it and never received our meals!! Are you absolutely joking me?! At some point in the waiting for out meals that the question arose if they had not even started to prepare our food. It wouldn't be that surprising considering there was 0 role clarity in the operational model. By the 90 minute mark this train wreck of an experience had to end. We left cash for the appetizer and left. I would like to think that they were upset that we left, but I'm pretty sure they won't even realize that we left. Two lessons here: 1)always trust your instincts. I knew deep down that I should never have even considers it but live and learn. 2)never trust the reviews on websites like yelp. 1% of the time there are positive reviews, 99% of the time it's whiny entitled people complaining about not having their asses kissed. But more importantly, these reviews are 100% garbage. Refer to lesson #1 and you won't find yourself in my unfortunate situation. And finally, if you look at my profile you will find that this is my one and only review. I never ever do this because I understand that once in a while you get a bad experience, but messing with my appetite is messing with my emotions.

Very good. Had falafel and chicken schwarma (sp?). And lentil soup was very good especially on a cold day. The people there are work horses. 2 workers were the waitresses and cooks. So it did take a little long, but very tasty. Only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is because I prefer Aladdin pita. But regardless, well worth going to.. and the price was very fair

I truly do not know what I did to deserve a meal like this--it is a debt I will not be able to repay. Anyway, this is a funny place. I can only assume that the salt & pepper shakers on the table, like the plastic flowers, and the large window overlooking a busy Munster, Indiana street, serve as helpful reminders of the mundane life I must return to when this meal ends. Best hummus I've ever had. Ever. This was an experience to treasure.

Eggplant sandwich was eggcellent! The falafel and chicken shawarma as well. Staff was very friendly and the baklava was some of the best I have ever had. We were traveling to Chicago and stopped by. You should stop by as well.

This place has the best Middle Eastern food in the whole area! Looks can be deceiving--the decor isn't fancy, and the outside is nondescript, but the food is phenomenal! We ordered the Mishkenut sampler to try a little bit of everything, and every single bit of it was delicious! The chicken shawarma is incredibly flavorful, and the kabobs are moist and tender but with a definitive hard sear on the outside from the grill. They also have the best baba ganoush I've ever had. We are longtime customers of Al Bawadi in Bridgeview, and Mishkenut blows them out of the water! The homemade chocolates they bring with the check are also incredible. This place is a gem hidden in plain sight. Definitely check them out!

I read the reviews, and thought I understood about the good food and wait times....but I didn't really. Upon my arrival I say to my husband, "Hey according to Yelp reviews this place has a wait time on service and food - pull out your phone and let's time them." At 20 minutes, the joke was on me. At 40 minutes the jokes was on them - I walked out. Bottom line if you are a small spot with an even smaller kitchen and tiny wait staff look for opportunity to distract people. Why prepare every single hummus appetizer at the time it is ordered? You know people will order it make it in advance or learn to do it faster. Have some version of chips and salsa that you can drop on every table so nobody notices how long it takes you to get around to them. When we got up and started walking out the waitress apologized and looked disappointed we were leaving BUT TRUTH IS! She could have saved herself 20 minutes prior with a glass of water, a good hello and something to just nosh. In NWI good places are hard to come by - so they can rest on their food for now...but in due time someone will get smart and do it right - then it won't just be me walking out, but an entire customer base.

I don't have much experience with exotic restaurants, but I really loved the food at Mishkenut. The hummus was incredible, and in fact got me to start eating hummus regularly. Whenever I want the best, though, I come back here. The restaurant is a little understaffed, so I have had to wait to get a server (about 10 minutes), and food can take quite a while to arrive. However, everyone I go with agrees it is worth the wait. The staff is very friendly. On a less busy occasion, we had a nice conversation with one of the servers, and actually ended up getting free appetizers. My only other complaint is that the ambiance could use some work - very plain decorations do little to disguise the mainly bland and boring color scheme of the restaurant. All in all, if you have friends with you and are willing to wait and talk while your food is prepared, definitely give Mishkenut a try. If you're alone or easily angered by waiting for food, look elsewhere.

Had the tabouli, baba, hummus, and grape leaves. Plus the beef kabobs and falafel. Everything was excellently prepared, presented, and tasted fantastic. The baba was the clear favorite! Finished off with baklava and hot mint tea. All was perfect and just what the hubby and I were looking for in casual dining at a very reasonable price. Service was also wonderful. Friendly with helpful recommendations and suggestions. So good to know they are there and close to 294. Finally, a go-to for dinner on my regular route between O'Hare and Michigan City!

One of my Wife's favorite places! I was not a big fan of meditation food until we came here. Friendly staff and family atmosphere, large food portions, and great food and prices.

I finally got a chance to drop in here after 2 years of passing by. There's a big sign in the window that says Kabob plate lunch special and I've been thinking about it for a while now. So I showed up at 2:05pm and was told I couldn't have it because it ends at 2pm. So much for first impressions. I guess the 2 customers they had in their restaurant was more than they needed at the time.

The food here was amazing! They were so helpful in making good recommendations and the service here was incredible. I got the beef shish kabob and my fiancé got the eggplant falafel and both were delicious. Since there were so many good food selections, they even gave us some complimentary chicken to taste and extra chocolate desserts which were extremely tasty. Thanks Hal!

Wait was long as others said. It appears the person that took my order also cooked. He was the only employee I saw and you can see into the kitchen. Higher rating would have come if service was more prompt. Please hire a waitress! Ok, so what about the food? Got the falafel appetizer and it was good. Tahini sauce was only ok and very thin. He said they would be spicey but I didn't find any heat in them. They were tasty however. Also got the lamb kabob and it was very good. Decor was minimal and confused me as it didn't fit with the food. This place has the bones to be better with a little attention to detail. Try it out if you have time to sit and wait.

No matter what kind of mood I'm in, when someone says Mishkenut, I get a smile on my face and immediately start to salivate. Our restaurant of choice going on three years now, I have NEVER eaten a morsel I didn't like. And it's so fresh, leftovers are just as good the next day (which is the longest they've ever lasted in my fridge). Sometimes I get the appetizer sampler (they are awesome about substitutions) and just eat that. Other times, I limit myself to one appetizer, then splurge on an amazing kebob or shawarma. I need to go more often, so I reach a point where I'll try something new. Give yourself time to wait . . . everything is prepared to order, so there's no pre-cooked or semi-ready portions waiting to be selected. And--if you choose--bring your own alcohol, relax, and savor the smell of those spices. I would love to turn Mishkenut's storefront location into a true Middle-Eastern harem style palace--we Americans want it all--but the owners are fabulous people, and the prices would triple! If it's healthy, authentic Middle-Eastern food you seek in your dining experience, Mishenut will leave you stuffed and wishing you had another stomach.

Friendly family running the restaurant. Very tasty olive oil they have made for them and you can buy. The food is good also.

Drove from Chicago to see a show at the Theater at the Center and chose Mishkenut because of the good reviews on Yelp. Boy, was I disappointed. First, it was a cold night out and my partner and I were looking forward to a warm, cozy dinner. The restaurant was quite chilly inside...couldn't have been more than 60 degrees. All the rest of the patrons had their winter coats on, or a sweater. We ordered a hummus appetizer (it was fine) and the salmon and a chicken kabob with rice and an additional side of vegetables. The entrees salmon and chicken were served hot, but our rice was room temperature, and bland. The vegetables were overcooked, slathered in oil with no additional flavor or seasoning. Then we had to wait a long time for our check which never came, so we had to get up and stand at the register. Bottom line, slow service, cold to the point of being uncomfortable dining room, and food served cold. I debated between 1 star and two but I hate to bash local establishments and the salmon and chicken were hot. But, I'd never go back.

Mishkenut is a gem in Munster, where the dining options are too often chain restaurants. This is a great place to meet up for a casual lunch or dinner and a fantastic carry out choice. The veggie plate is fantastic. Succulent rice topped with broccoli, squash, cauliflower, carrots, topped with light seasoning and a sprinkling of feta (smooth not tart) . The chicken or beef shawarma or lamb kabob are all delicious options as plates or in wonderful wrap type sandwiches. The asparagus chicken is great, as is the lemon chicken, and the beef stroganoff. The beef stroganoff is not made the way you might expect it but it is very good. (Keep in mind that this is a Mediterranean restaurant.) The stuffed grape leaves are the best around in my opinion. The salads are great with a house dressing that is excellent. If you have preferences, let them know. If you are a regular they will make the dishes the way you like them. This is a family business, run by family members. A few dishes vary depending on who is there. We have been regulars here for years and have seen that over the years many of the dishes have become more consistent compared to when they first opened. The pita bread is just pita bread, so if you are used to the soft right out of the oven pitas that a restaurant 20 miles southeast has be prepared to have plain pita bread here. There is nothing wrong with the pita bread here other than the existence of that other great restaurant that set the bar for pita bread pretty high. The appetizers are great, the falafel is better than I have had elsewhere. The prune rolls and the labana are both amazing. The hummus and tabula, both staples at any Middle Eastern restaurant, hold their own against the competition. If you haven't been to this easy to overlook gem in Munster, you are missing out.

I waited 1 hour for my food to come lady was upset because I ask for a receipt for a prepaid order I want to come back to pick up my order she said in front of everyone obviously this must be your first time coming I guess she strongly believe in good faith ordering 27 dollars is a wee bit too much to walk out the store without a receipt lady was over stressed food was very basic business needs to get rid of table and chairs and just have a window that would speed up service and have two people cooking instead of one I'm hopeful for major improvements

The decor wasn't the greatest and service was a little slow, but the food definitely made up for it. I went with my mom and we got the Mishkenut for two. It came with kabob, schwerma, hummus, and falafel. We were also supposed to get kabah, but they were out of it. They offered to replace it with lamb, which was fine. This was my first opportunity to try Mediterranean, besides gyros, if they even count. Everything tasted great. I'm so glad a place like this has come to Munster. It's so nice to have something different. I will definitely be going back.

I can't get over people that complain because of how simple this place is decorated. When it comes to trying to eat healthy out here in the suburbs there's nothing! Coming here you can't go wrong, one persons review they complained that there's not a lot of employees so what there all family. The service is never slow considering they make every thing in house. If you're sick and tired of the normal crap served at restaurants in the suburbs and you want something good not expensive then you need to come here!

Great local place with simple, unpretentious decor. Those Chicagoans who turn up their noses should probably just stay in Chicago. This is a family run restaurant with only family for employees. My latest visit was late on a Friday afternoon around rush hour. There were three other groups seated in addition to my friend and myself. One waitress and one cook. We had the humus (excellent), fatoosh salad and the sample meat platter (kufta kabobs, shish kabob, chicken shawerma). All the meat was perfectly cooked. We've never had a bad meal here.

Such a hidden gem! Very good quality , authentic Mediterranean taste and good portions. The chicken skewers were juicy and very tasty. I didn't give 5 stars because of the wait time, they are a pretty new establishment and very short staffed. I suggest calling ahead to avoid a long wait.
