Tried this place again, still awful. Extra charges they don't tell you about until the bill comes. Management doesn't manage. I will never be back.

We love Sportsman. We live less than 5 minutes away and often order carryout as well as eating in. Love their wings, salads, soups, sandwiches and several of the entrees (I'd avoid the pasta, not my favorite). Haven't had a bad appetizer here. All of the servers I've had have been great. Their bar mixes great drinks as well.

Our favorite place in Monticello. The fish is great. The steaks are delicious. The chicken tenders are to die for. And the view of the lake is so nice. Well done Sportsman Inn!

Only giving it 3 stars, because I see much potential at this establishment, but with it being the only lakefront dining option on Lake Freeman - it's a must. Definitely sit outside to enjoy the lovely and relaxing view. Often they will have live music. Could definitely improve the beer selection and the service is average. A wonderful location, i'd recommend based on that - but many improvements could be made to make The Sportsman the talk of the town!

This restaurant deserves 0 stars. My family and I went to Sportsman's Inn on July 5th for the Lake Schafer "Proud to Be An American" boat parade. We went there because they were specifically honoring my wife's Grandpa, one of the founders of the boat parade. The emcees for the event asked us to attend, and even dedicated one of the flyover formations to Steve (Grandpa). While the event was beautiful, the Sportsman's Inn did everything in their power to ruin this event for us. They refused to let us reserve a seat, although the event coordinators asked us to be there. When we arrived, there were a few cocktail tables on the upper deck open, so we placed our group of 12 up there. They assured us that we wouldn't get a "real" table, and that we had to order at the bar if we wanted any drinks or food. We went to the outside bar, and the bartenders refused to serve us since we weren't seated in their area. After searching for the manager, George, a few merciful waitresses helped us order some food, and we were going to pick it up from the indoor bar, when George showed up, chest puffed. He angrily told us that we weren't allowed to even HAVE food, and there was no way we would get an exception (even though he was aware that the event was honoring the patriarch of our family) We decided to ignore this imbecile and pick up the food we had ordered, but he proceeded to follow us around and heckle us, telling us that he was going to cancel our order, that we had to serve ourselves, carry our own plates outside, and as we picked up the food he literally told us "make sure you bring your dirty dishes back inside when you're done" After nearly missing the flyover due to George's badgering and the delayed self-service, we were reminded several times to "pay the bill"... Why would they assume we weren't going to? We left with a sour taste in our mouths, this beautiful event and day spoiled by the unprofessionalism that pervaded the entire hierarchy of this establishment... From bus boys who asked us to open doors for them to an absolutely asinine manager, we were treated like garbage from start to finish. Considering that the work of our Grandfather brought immense amounts of business to this restaurant each year for the boat parade for the past decade, and will continue to do so for years to come, I am ashamed of the Sportsman's Inn and they will never receive my patronage again.

The first time I visited the Inn, I was with my girlfriend - who is now my fiance'. Had a fantastic pasta. And there was a fellow named Clint Brandt playing. Great sound, great atmosphere, nice people. It was early wintertime, so I didn't get to experience the outside seating. R. - rickerrocker.com/Places_…

Been coming to Monticello for years. Tried the Inn. Great Wings!! Crunchy fried chicken, sautéed veggies with dinner were perfect. Big windows, perfect lake views.

Confronted the manager and was told our food was ready to come out in just a few minutes :) Not able to comp our bill or any discount for the long wait ! Manager didn't even offer our drinks free !! TyLer the waiter needed some help !

UPDATED, CONVENIENT TO LAKE FREEMAN FRIENDS Locals and lake visitors like the updates the current owners have made to the lakeside dining room and more intimate bar room. The food is above par, but the Sportsman Inn doesn't yet have folks standing in line like the old days when it was operated by Roy, Beth and Becky Conrad. With more marketing, better front- and back-of-house teamwork and some exterior maintenance, the Sportsman Inn could once again be among Northwest Indiana's leading restaurants (ala Roy talking politics; Beth, antiques; and Becky greeting and seating guests). Sportsman Inn still commands much potential and remains a convenient first choice for Monticello's south-side residents and Lake Freeman's tourists.Today's owners deserve our patronage and support for keeping this landmark alive!

Admittedly, we did not find the Sportsman Inn. The Sportsman Inn found us. We were tired of being in the car and hungry, it was getting dark, and we needed to get off the road for a while. We happened to drive past this nice looking place on the river and decided to stop and check it out. I was really surprised by how good the food was. I got the fried chicken and it was just out of the fryer, smokin hot but not dripping with oil. Also I had a French Onion soup that was perfectly done. The drinks were a bit on the Chicago side (i.e. $2 for a diet cola) and the food was too, but the portions were gigantic. They had some great choices on the kids menu with good prices. Our server was really nice to us as well. We were asking for directions to get back to a certain road and she spent a few minutes explaining, then gave us a to go menu and said if we got lost just to call her back. They had a really nice looking deck on the water side but it was a bit too cool for it this evening. Also there is a party room upstairs where they had something going on. You can still smoke in the bar here (like everywhere else in Indiana) which caught me a bit off guard since Illinois is no smoking now. It just makes sense. Who doesn't like to light up whilst drinking?

I had the Sportsman Inn cater a party for me. The food at the event was not as good as we expected. We had stations set up with appetizers - the spinach and artichoke dip was cold and the sliders didn't look like something one should eat. People seemed to enjoy the stuffed mushrooms. We also had pasta stations but the pasta I was served was drowned in oil and garlic. I love garlic but it was even too much for me. George was very helpful with planning before the event. He would respond to emails and calls within 24 business hours. Because of this, I incorrectly expected great customer service during and after the event. At the event, George never introduced himself to me - I had to ask around to find him at the end of the night to pay the tab. Once he got the check, he took days to respond to calls and emails, if he bothered to reply at all.

It's been three years since I wrote my last review here, and it's been three football seasons that I have been frequenting the Sportsman Inn every Sunday to watch Vikings football. If there is another bar in Monticello that has NFL Sunday ticket, I haven't found it, but even so, I would still chose the Sportsman Inn. The Sunday lunch menu hasn't changed in three years (at least, not noticeably), but that's fine because it's everything you could ask for and is heads above anything else you're going to find in town. For us, the best quality of the Sportsman Inn is the staff who we have a relationship with, and it really matters when you are a Vikings fan in the heart of Colts and Bears country. Misty, the bartender, is usually also our server, and we totally heart her, as she knows we never order alcohol, but still happily gets us the 10 free refills of Pepsi and ice tea that we drink in 3.5 hours watching football. She was also kind/spunky/forward enough to speak to the next table of bigots who made us very uncomfortable with their conversation. The manager is also a sweetheart, as he comes up to us at least once during the game to talk football. He also fixed the wifi problem that we rely on to work on our laptops while watching football. Despite the fact that Susie has only been our server once or twice the first couple of times we came to the Sportsman three years ago, she always greets us and asks how we are. Even when it's crazy crowded to the rafters in the bar with Colts and Bears fan, they set up a new table for us or find a table to put us and a tv with Vikings football just for us so they definitely have our loyalty. As for the food, it's easily the best in town. They understand their football fans so they have all-you-can-eat wings, breaded or not, in 6 different varieties that you can mix and match. The onion rings and fried chicken are always huge, battered well and fresh out of the fryer. We love their clam chowder. On the special, rare occasion that they have pork shank on the menu, order it. It's phenomenal and only $16.00. They make giant, beautiful, mixed drinks that if you're like me, you like to taste the fruity/chocolate mix more than the alcohol. Their desserts are shown to you on a giant, silver tray and they are not disappointing. I can't say enough about how great this place has been to us and for us so give it a try!

Three Words - Great Chicken Wings. The Daytona sauce for their chicken wings is to die for. I've had a variety of food at the Sportsmann and have been very happy. The service is decent - although sometimes it seems like a long time between visits from a server. Price is a little expensive but the food quality mostly warrants it. A very good place to eat.

Food was fantastic! We visited on a Thursday evening and sat on the deck enjoying the band Tone Bones. They were such a nice pairing with the perfect weather and food. What was not enjoyable was our server. Our party of 5 sat down before 7 and left at 10. We did not stick around that long because of the band. Don't get me wrong, the band and food were excellent. Had our waitress been more attentive, we would have ordered more drinks and probably dessert but I had to track her down for more beer and water and she never brought the dessert tray around. At some point you just give up and say "we've been here long enough". We saw all the other servers come by their tables very frequently. Ours continued to take 20 minute smoke breaks. Let's be honest, ours sucked! Good places to eat are hard to find in Monticello. Please don't let our bad service keep you from going. Just request a server that doesn't smoke.

Do NOT order the Giant Margarita without 2-3 others with whom to share it! Taste-wise it wasn't the best, but the attention it garnered kicked off the dinner well. Our server was superb; we said we were in no rush and she accommodated that for the most part. We had a great indoor table overlooking the water and felt tucked in and sheltered from the hustle-bustle. We arrived shortly after 4:00 on a Saturday, and the dining room was virtually empty. When we approached the hostess stand, she looked up, so I began speaking to her. She looked down again, asked for a moment to go get a server and left. We stood there for roughly 2-3 minutes as staff hustled and bustled past us. Someone else finally asked if we were being helped, and when I replied we weren't, she got a baffled look on her face. At that point the other hostess came back and we were seated. My reason in reporting this incident was that they had been open for 5 hours when we arrived. Appetizer of fried pickle spears was great. Based on that, I ordered their homemade ranch dressing for my salad. The mix of greens on the salad plate was nice, but dressing was scarce. I had the fried haddock entree, which came with what appeared to be a mix of over cooked fresh and some canned veggies. One may not sub out the veggies. Baked potato and sweet potato are only available after 5, so I ordered the onion rings. They were excellent. The fish itself was moist and flaky, nicely done. Would I go back? Probably, because choices are few around here. They also have excellent parking accommodations for drivers with disabilities - a big plus in my book!

Went back last night. The restaurant was very busy but we were seated pretty quickly. This time I ordered their big rib eye. It was a standard size but not big to me, maybe 12 oz. But great seasoning and tasted like it off a BBQ grill. My wife had the rueben, she loved it. My son had the cowboy steak...now that was a nice size piece of meat. I'll be definitely getting that next time. Service was better than expected with the restaurant being so busy. I think her name was Katherine, she was very good!!

Nice patio on the water. Wings and steak salad were pretty good. Limited beer selection. Needs some good craft beers on tap to round out a nice experience.

Great food and handled our large crowd wonderfully. Salmon was wonderful and a friend had the shrimp and was raving about it.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
