I have no problem with Steak N Shake overall. It is what it is, I have grown up eating at Steak N Shakes all over Indiana since I was a young child. You get the typical burgers, fries, and other options. It is one of my comfort foods. I would give the overall Steak N Shake a 3 star rating, not the best, but not McDonald's. For me it is comfort food I grew up eating once a month or so. But if I could give this location a negative star rating I would. Avoid this location like the plague. First off they are always slow by the SnS standard I grew up with, half the tables being full in the middle of the day is not busy, but slow for a SnS they would usually be full for lunch in most other cities. Yet this location somehow can not seem to get a meal served from time of sit down to time of served in less than 30 minutes. Sorry SNS isn't fast food, but it isn't actually a steak house, my burger should be at my table before the 30 minute mark. And the "managers" at this location are so inept at their jobs it is actually comical, they couldn't fix a simple request for a burger to be remade and not to have to wait another 30 minutes to have it made. To be honest if you are looking to try SNS just skip this location. The best thing that could happen to SNS is it shutting down this location so anyone visiting doesn't get a bad impression. The best thing that could happen to this reviewer is this location shutting down so I am not tempted to get a taste of childhood on a lunch break and then be late getting back to work ever again.

If you're craving a late night burger and milkshake, this is the best place to go in south bend/ mishawaka. Open 24 hours. Never disappoints.

I love SNS. I always either get the guacamole chicken sandwich or chicken melt (with the best fresco sauce ever!). This is the location I normally go to. It hasn't always been perfect, but what business doesn't have it's off days? They are always so apologetic when mistakes happen, though. I even got free delicious cookies one of the two times I had a slightly less than perfect visit. Cut them some slack and enjoy what they offer: a casual atmosphere and yummy eats!

This is possibly the worst joint in the world. It's one of those places that makes me think, "Fuck" whenever someone suggests eating here and I have no choice. And for those of you who say this place has the best milkshakes, you guys don't even know what the hell a milkshake is. And I pity you. Their milkshakes aren't even creamy. It's more like cheap flavored ice milk than anything. If you like ice milk, then this place is for you.

Usually the decision to hit up a steak n' shake at 1:30 am occurs in the middle of an alcohol induced pang of starvation.... Tonight it was pure nostalgia and the need for a place to sit down before our trip to the airport. I'd like to report that it tastes just as delicious sober as when you're dying of hunger after a long night of cheap beer at bleachers :) Even though the place was packed and only one (clearly panicked) sever boy was running the show.... Our service was pleasant and quick. Even after my husband spilled his drink all over (again-- sober :P) the server passed off some napkins and a few quick witted jokes like a pro. Im way stuffed (especially since I gave into my chocolate shake craving) but glad we made the stop here.

This was probably the worst experience I've had at a steak and shake. I usually go to the Ireland road one but met some friends at this one. Silverware was disgusting my knife was covered in filth it looked as if someone was eating with it tried to lick it clean and stuck it back in the napkin. Service was terrible, on top of drippy drinks and not enough napkins on a table that was partially clean, it took a half hour to get seated another half hour to get waited and another 45 to get the food. Which btw was cold and lacked flavor. And not to mention lacked fries. I will probably not eat at this chain again I think I'll stick to Ireland road.

Terrible service. Took 15 minutes for someone to take our order with few people in the restaurant. Waitress came to our table once. Food took 25 minutes to get to our table and we waited for over 20 minutes to pay. This place is a joke.

Do NOT expect great service. They typically ignore you as you wait to be seated. If it is busy, as you are seated you will be fortunate to even be offered a drink to tide you over before they get back to you to get your food order. However, the food is typically delicious by a burger/diner standard. The value is excellent, considering it is a sit down place and everything is cooked directly to order. The service experience usually is much better once the food order process begins. Yes, there are occasions where it can be a complete "miss." But, the manager has always made it right with me by offering to remake the food and/or comping items. There are some really good servers, too. For what it is, this SNS easily makes the grade. If I go in expecting more, it is my fault.

EXCELLENT! The burgers, fries & shakes are so much better than any other "chain". Our service was also extremely fast even though the place was packed. Our waitress was extremely efficient and personable. I wish they had one in Virginia.

I hadn't had Steak & Shake in over 12 years, because I lived in a place that didn't have one. I use to love their food, I would go out of my way to eat there back in the day. I stopped last night after work only to find the fries cold without salt and pretty tasteless. The burger had a good flavor, but was exceptionally greasy and not greasy in a good way.

Pure garbage. The food was cold and tasteless, we were missing condiments and the booths were filthy. The manager was more concerned with chatting on his phone. I have two stars instead of one because our server, Max, made our experience a little more tolerable

The worst Steak N Shake we have been to. The Iced Tea had a terrible taste that I honestly can't describe. When I complained to the waitress she said she knows and agrees and that other people complain also, not just today. The french fries were cold .I ordered the chili with cheese and onions, it was barely warm and only beans, I ordered extra beef and was given a small cup with barely a teaspoonful of beef. When I said something about it too the waitress she said I would have to order extra extra beef. I was charged. 99 cents for the teaspoonful. We spoke to the manager about our concerns she didn't say anything not even I am sorry or what can I do make it right, seems like she is used to this. All she did was take off the chili. I sure would have liked to see her a little more concerned We will not be going back to this Steak N Shake.

I'm disappointed to hear the negative reviews. I had a wonderful experience at the grape road location. Food was served in under 5 min. We were helped right away. The food is anything but typical fast food. These are great, juicy burgers witth fresh toppings on real buns, at a cheaper than fast food price. It was my first time here as they dont have this in the west where I moved from. I love steak and shake.

I was vacationing and really wanted to try it. The people i was with finally caved in and decided to give it a try. I have no idea what's wrong with these employees. I couldn't decide if they were being racist or not considering that they're somewhat close to the campus. ANYWAYS, we walked in and it was not busy at all. There was about 4 tables being used. The hostess ruined my night. The fake blonde fake-welcomed us in. When she was going to seat us, we took some ridiculous route. She finally stopped at a table. This table was behind a booth-backrest and honestly, two more steps and you were in the bathroom. Seriously? the restaurant is NOT busy and you want to sit us near the bathroom that is obviously only meant for two people, not 3. We were obvious when we looked back at the other tables, back out ours, then at the hostess and finally asked for another table. She proceeds to take a few steps to the side and offers a retarded table corner table/ booth that seats one person on one side and 2 on the other near the fire exit. We gave up and sat down to be clearly isolated from the other four parties in the restaurant like we were lepers. The only upside was the server; he offered to seat us at a larger table AND closer to other people. He gladly explained the menu since it was our first time there. The experience was so bad that I can't even remember the quality of the food, except that it was hot when we got it.

I wish there were Steak n Shake restaurants out here in the west. The food are alright. But they have the best milkshake out of any places I've gone since. The restaurant also opens 24/7. So I was able to get my milkshake at anytime I wanted =) Will definitely be getting a milkshake everyday whenever I come back to Indiana to visit friends & family.

A chain joint, like a greasy spoon without the redeeming qualities. Average food (but good fries/onion rings), really good milkshakes. Redeemed by its 24/7 schedule--stop by with friends at any hour of the night, they'll be open and ready to greet you with a fake smile and their garish diner decor.
