We go to Bynum's every Saturday Night prior to the Indy 500 (Memorial Weekend). The steak is really good, but the French Onion Soup, Salad, and bread are very average. The baked potatoes are very good, just very small. It is very predictable and the meal is always good, just not great. It is a family tradition.

If you find yourself in Martinsville with a hankering for some steak...this is the place. Old school steak house that does one thing right....Steak! My traditional steakhouse test is ordering a rib eye and seeing how the place does with it...and Bynums does not disappoint. Super flavorful and while chewy (as a ribeye should be...) super tender and delicious. Others at my table had the 8oz filet and the t-bone. All of these were perfect displays of well seasoned, perfectly cooked steaks. All steaks come with a soup (french onion-esque...blah, but who cares...your steak will be there soon!) and a salad (if your nto bleu cheese, get their bleu cheese dressing!) Also, ask for a side of their horseradish sauce...leave you sweatin!

Our group ordered the ny strip & the ribeye. Both steaks were excellent & cooked exactly as ordered. The salads were generous sized and the bread also was delightful. We were a bit disappointed with the mushrooms. The interior decor is the only reason we didn't give it 4 stars. The prices were very fair and the service was very good.

Friendly staff? We ordered steak and one of our party had the steak severely overcooked and tough after ordering it medium rare. The other two steaks we had were good, but that's not the issue. The waitress assigned to us was not just rude but extremely patronizing and racist when we pointed this out. Not just that, but they were extremely friendly and serviced the neighboring table like a proper restaurant. I only learned about Martinville's racist reputation a few months after I came to Indiana, but this was the worst possible first impression of the state. In the end, the offending steak was left completely uneaten save for a bite. Any self respecting restaurant in L.A. or even Indianapolis and Chicago would have offered a comped meal for such a grave mistake. Here in Martinsville, you get rude and racist staff with a 50% discount on an entirely untouched steak. Wow. I'll avoid this part of Indiana until it catches up with the 21st century.

THE LOCATION: Bynum's Steakhouse is quite a gem. This is a sort of place where you have to know someone locally in order to introduce you to it. I came here with some family and friends and it is about 30 minutes outside of Bloomington and they are right off the main road. Their service was friendly and man, do they have good steak. This is a pricier place (as opposed to Outback or Texas Corral) but their steak is much better than any chain. Our party of six were seated at a long spacious booth and the decor was nice and cozy, with deep wooden panels covered in vintage signs and license plates. THE FOOD: Really good. I ordered a 12 oz. sirloin off their special "stimulus" menu (for smaller portions and cheaper prices) which was $14.95 and included a baked potato, beef/onion soup, salad and fresh bread. You will not leave this place hungry. Their meat is high quality and full of flavor. When our server asked whether we'd like A1 sauce or any other condiments for our steaks... six heads looked back with blank stares for a moment, thinking "nothing to taint the sacred simplicity of a juicy steak." They make their bleu cheese dressing in-house which the server will be really proud to tell you about (order it with your salad!) and they have a full bar. Other people at my table ordered the filet mignon and the New York Strip, all of which were raved as delicious. The meat was slightly seasoned and charred just right. Per person, the price ranged from $15-$30 depending on which cut of steak and the oz. of meat and they all come with the soup/salad/baked potato combo. Overall, you can't go wrong going to this family-owned steakhouse. There may not be many reviews for this place, but it is definitely a local favorite.

When you go to Bynum's you need to stay focused. Repeat after me, "I am here for the steak." They have been doing excellent steak since they opened in 1983. I lived there in the 80's and I remember it well and have been there occasionally ever since. Now stay focused as you look around at the semi-eclectic décor and wait (an indeterminate time) for one of the reasonably pleasant waitresses to get your drink order. When you do order your meal things will arrive in predictable sequence and reasonable pace. The bread will be a nondescript white, nothing to distract or attract you in any way. Don't be addled, bedazzled, confused or disconcerted by it or the "Whipped Spread" product you will be given to put on it. Keep your focus. The French Onion soup will be a very tasty broth with a bit of this bread floating in it and some congealed melted cheese in the bottom. Think of how valuable the hydration is and enjoy the soup. The salad will be very fresh. Freshly shoveled out of a bag of shredded lettuces, but fresh is important, even with the bottled dressing options. When your salad bowl is removed your used and dirty fork will be neatly placed on the bare table, or sometimes on a napkin, if you leave your dirty one on the table. (It continues to amaze me how many restaurants fail to see how much they could raise the tone with as simple a thing as a clean fork!) And then you get your reward. A steak, done well and worth the wait. I think. Not as well trimmed as in the 80's perhaps but very well cooked and a prime cut, well chosen. You will still get a gelatinous white soy product instead of real sour cream to put on your potato but the potato will be well cooked and if you stay focused on the steak it will not matter too much. I enjoyed my New York Strip immensely. Bynum's has been here for over 30 years so it is doing something right. Must be the meat. On the other hand, if you have a car and a bit of time, I can recommend some very good meat eating places in Bloomington which offer a few other attractions.

We will never return. Money is better spent somewhere els. It's really hit or mis with the wait staff whether service will be rude or not. The owner is fowl mouthed and rude the food is overpriced and limited. For what it cost the dining experience is like eating at a truck stop. There is no dress code so teeshirts and flip flops are the norm. I guess this place seems like it's hi-eatin to a few of the local hijacks but trust me any positive reviews you may read are probably friends of the ownners or they work there. This place is a huge disappointment !

Had reservations at 6:30.Got sat at 9. Unprofessional hostess. Manager comped meal. Owner called next morning accusing us of walking out. When asked for an email to CC in the email to BBB was told and I quote to "fuck off" by the owner. Spend your money elsewhere. This guy obviously doesn't run his business well. Multiple mistakes and no responsibility taken. Don't let your ego run your business Sir.

Sat there and gave drink order twice. After 45 minutes and no drinks also nobody wanted to take our food order. We walked out. I do not recommend.

I made a reservation here for my sister's birthday. When we arrived at the restaurant the hostess said that she didn't have any reservation for us and that I had probably called the other Bynam's in Indianapolis. First of all, I did not call the Bynam's in Indianapolis, I called the 765 number and I actually believe I spoke to the actual hostess that claimed we did not have a reservation. She was extremely rude and didn't even offer to see if she could fit us in. We were pretty upset by her behavior, and asked to speak to the manager. She stomped off and came back and said he would be there in a minute. In the meantime, she took a call and made reservations for 4 people, for this same evening in less than 1/2 hour from the time we were standing there. ARE YOU KIDDING? Once the manager came up front, we realized that the hostess was not the rudest person we would meet that night! He was even nastier then she was. He was so nasty that my dad got really upset. He and the manager had words and the manager told us to "get the hell out" and then went he hid behind a wall and actually threatened us! This coward was rude, nasty and completely out of line. Note to the owner: Not that I will ever visit Bynam's again, but you may want to find people with some sort of higher education and class to work here. Being illiterate may explain why the hostess could not remember our reservation and I believe ignorace and lack of exposure to main stream society may explain the manager's conduct. On the upside, we drove back to civilation and ate at Janko's in Bloomington. We were then actually thankful for the atrocious behavior we encountered at Bynum's, because we would not have had such an great evening at Janko's.

Every small town seems to have a place like this...unassuming and surprising. Stopped here after cleaning out our daughter's Bloomington apartment. Couldn't have been happier. Friendly and attentive staff, plenty of good high quality food. This s no local version of Outback. This s good food in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.
