Fantastic torta- perfect ratio of bread to steak and chorizo and all the fillings. And a delicious freshly-made horchata. As a Californian on her way across the Midwest, I didn't think it would be possible to have such authentic Mexican in Indiana, but this was a welcome surprise. Thanks Yelpers for leading me here!

I was meeting a friend for dinner and this place happened to be close to our evening meeting. Next time it will be an intentional destination. I ordered the green enchiladas, homemade tomatillo sauce, it was wonderful! I got one pork tamale, just to to try. Oh my, it was the best tamale I have ever had, hot steamy not too spicy lots of pork filling. Makes me want to drive back right now for lunch.

I've been several times. The food and service is always the best. The sign will read "Mexican Grill". You won't find it by Tortas Johann, the name on this Yelp page.

Get outta here!!! This place is amazing! Try the tortas. I live in Chicago and have tried tons of tortas from authentic mexican restaurants. Nothing compares to this, Kokomo has a real gem here. This place should be packed every single day, food is outstanding!!!!!!!!

Now serving breakfast. It is awesome as usual. I've been in twice for breakfast. Juevos Rancheros and Chilaquiles are highly recommended.

Thanks to the yelpers for putting this little hidden gem on the radar. Awesome little torta shop! Had the milichori (steak and chorizo) - regular size - excellent sammie. Wifey had the quesadilla - served open face. Shared chips and salsa (extra price). $12 meal. I could spend 2 weeks just going through the torta options. It's a storefront - expect dive-ish. Very friendly staff. Family owned/operated - if busy expect a wait. Fellow in front of us dropped $50 on carry out tortas - and the place was a bit busy on a Friday eve - had a brief wait but not terrible. Can't wait to get back!

The sign says "Mexican Grill," and as a former California girl, I can happily tell you that this is the best authentic Mexican food ever (in the world)! I suggest the tacos (they're all good), torta (chorizo is my favorite), Hawaiian burger (it has jalapenos on it - yum), mama's chicken (the sauce is to die for), ... seriously everything on the menu is perfection. After my first visit, I was so thrilled that I actually went to Food Network's website and nominated them for Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives...I doubt Guy travels to Kokomo for his show, so too bad for him & more tortas for me!

I know authentic Mexican and I am happy to have finally found it in Kokomo! Excellent tacos and tortas and yes, totally authentic (and don't even ask if they're hard or soft shell - if you don't already know the answer you might as well go back to Taco Bell). But sadly, no lengua, cabeza or menudo on the menu - I briefly spoke to family member / owners and they indicated they only make it for themselves but Kokomo wasn't ready for it yet! They do offer tamales on occasion - you just need to ask, and yes - they're awesome! Apparently the owners started Tortas Oscar in Galveston and sold it to their brother / uncle to open Tortas Johann so that's why the food is very similar. It's great to see local family owned eateries that obviously care about their food and place.

The torta was delicious and everyone was super friendly! The man working the register recognized all the regulars. After ordering the food came out with in 5 minutes. I would go back again!

This is probably one of my favorite restaurants in Kokomo. I go here for lunch whenever I can. I love the tortas and the tacos. The tacos are very authentic and not like the run-of-the-mill tacos you would get at most Mexican restaurants that pop up on the Indiana landscape. I also enjoy their tortas.

I love the tortas. Best I have ever had. The service is great and the hot sauce is perfect.

This little restaurant in a strip mall blew me away. This place was highly recommended by several Kokomo residents, so I made it a point to stop for lunch while I was in Kokomo for business. I must admit, it didn't sound too promising when the directions I was given were, "It's in a strip mall between a smoke shop and a lingerie store." But the restaurant is extremely clean and the staff are exceptionally friendly and helpful. I am a vegetarian, and I was assured that anything on the menu could be prepared without meat. The ingredients are all fresh and everything that I have tried has been excellent. Tortas, quesadillas and the authentic tacos are all amazing. The red sauce is perfect. I travel for work throughout Indiana, Illinois and Ohio and I always look for good, clean authentic Mexican restaurants. This is one of the few I have found that qualify. Indiana has Mexican restaurants everywhere and although most are adequate none are special. This one is. I live in Westfield but plan to make the trip to Kokomo when I am craving Mexican food, which is often. If I lived in Kokomo I would be at Tortas Johann at least once every week.

Stayed for business at Hampton Inn and jumped on Yelp. found this a few blocks away and rated 4+ stars. Walked in and ordered 2 pork tamales combo to go w/lemonade from fountain. $11.11 total. Took only 10 minutes. Server was very friendly, fast & polite! Tamales were hot, flavorful and wrapped in corn husks and then alum foil to keep heated. Rice, beans and salad sides were good too. Oh yes I'd recommend the lemonade...it cools the spice. The sign says Mexican Grill and is middle spot on strip mall. No frills inside but open and clean. I wish I stayed in Kokomo more often so I could return and try other items!

Wow. Dining experiences must be really bad if this place rate five stars. Our family of four stopped by here having been attracted by the five star ratings. A five star restaurant this is NOT. So, the good: The cash register person was very friendly and the restaurant for the most part was clean. No body got sick afterwards. There were serve yourself refills of soda pop. The bad: No table service or waitress. You go in, pick up a menu, figure out what you want, then go to the cash register person and place your order. Everything is extra including chips and salsa. It is not inexpensive either. We had three entrees that we shared, four drinks and a couple of appetizers and the bill was over 55 dollars. They close and lock the doors at 8 pm. When you do get ready to leave, you have to figure out how to unlock the door yourself as I could not raise anyone to help us out. I guess one other good thing--at 8 pm they did not kick us out. I don't want to give the impression that the place was horrible because it wasn't. I will say that it was the biggest disappointment I have ever encountered from a Yelp five star rated restaurant. Really. If one of the reviews had not been from a Yelp elite person, I would have thought the ratings were all bogus. Definitely not worth any special effort to get there. I won't be going back, and as much as it pains me to say this, Taco Bell would have been just as good and a whole lot less money.

Tortas Johann saved my lunch life recently when nearby Jay's Thai went on hiatus. It's labelled as a "Mexican Grill" and is the sister restaurant to Tortas Oscar in Galveston. If you want authentic Mexican this is probably the closest you will get in Kokomo - the tortas are delicious! There's also standard fare like tacos and nachos. I would in fact most recommend the Nachos Oscar for anyone in a cheesy mood. Tortas Johann has a very no-frills, family-owned atmosphere. The food comes fresh and fast. Prices are reasonable and in some cases cheap - be aware you'll get big servings. Even the cook will tell you a full-size torta is "bigger than a Whopper."

Thanks to yelp, we had lunch at this gem today. Restaurant is on the small side, very clean, with a fairly extensive menu. Staff was friendly and efficient. Many customers appeared to be regulars. Husband had the quesadillas--chicken; I had nachos. Both of us were pleased with our selections as they were tasty and ample portions. I was a bit surprised that chips and salsa were not complimentary; however, the food was prepared quickly so we didn't really miss chips and salsa.

Well, they're doing this new thing. If you ask for a veggie taco without cheese, they put grilled pineapple on it. You'll want to do that. And you'll want to try the guac. You'll want to do it, and you'll want to do it soon. Feel free to thank me later.

Had the Beef and Chorizo torta. The chorizo is made in house and was awesome. They have two sizes. If you get the big one you will be in a food coma. I also ate the special which was passoa (sp) soup. Fresh and tasty. Go you will like it!!

Food is really good, and the staff were delightful. Coffee is okay, but the food makes up for it. Only tried their Taco and the special hotdog so far.

Wow! Authentic, made fresh (not reheated frozen) Mexican food in Indiana!! And in Kokomo?! Yes, yes, yes!!! We were absolutely delighted to find this little gem in a strip mall in the south Kokomo area. No cheezy atmosphere or stereotypical muzak in the background!! Johann served us and was wonderful as he explained some of the items that are unique to Tortas Johann. We were absolutely delighted when we saw our dinners because they looked wonderful - not the runny bean, dried rice and over microwaved entrée that the chain Mexican restaurants serve. Everything was fresh and delicious. Definitely going to be our go to place when we are in Kokomo!!!

From the outside, this tiny restaurant doesn't look like much of anything special. It's smashed in between a cigar shop and a store that sells "relationship aids." In a rush and with a craving for Mexican food, I decided to stop in one day for lunch. It is now one of my favorite places to eat in town. I usually order Mom's Chicken. It's probably the best thing on the menu besides the Watermelon Water. All of the ingredients taste fresh and the staff is beyond friendly. In fact, my family and I ran into one of the workers at the grocery store and he remembered us (and our names!). This place is seriously impressive. The average cost of my meal is about 20 bucks, and I don't skip anything. I'd recommend this place to anyone in or out of town who is looking for REAL Mexican cuisine, down-home service, an exceptionally clean environment, and reasonable prices.

Being from California and picky about Mexican food, this place definitely gets four stars. Outstanding authentic flavor... I highly recommend the tacos!

Hands down the best Mexican restaurant in Kokomo. This place actually has flavor and friendly service. Homemade items with FRESH ingredients... No other Mexican place in Kokomo can say that. I don't even bother with all the other restaurants anymore.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
