Was up in Hammond on business yesterday and stopped by this diner on the way back home. I had an enjoyable experience. I ordered the cheeseburger and I must say it was delicious they even grill the bun...tasty. The waitress was really friendly and smiled a lot. There were what appeared to be regulars in there who the staff knew on a personal level. I would say that if I am traveling to Hammond again that I will be making a stop there.

Hand cut steaks...best in area. Really good food and prices. All the soups and side are made on site.

Average region greasy-spoon restaurant..prices are a bit over priced, it's not horrible, but it's nothing to be doing cartwheels about either

Worst restaurant in the region. I took my daughter there, who ordered a hot dog, which was burnt a touch, cut in half down the length of the dog, and served like a sandwich. I ordered the ground sirloin thing, well done. Well, the cook was too busy chatting with his friend, and the inexperienced waitress knew not what she was doing. I got my soup AFTER my entre`, and the "well done" meat was burnt on the outside and still pink in the middle. The place is dirty, garbage lies all about, and the menu items cost way too much. I'd rather starve then dine there again.

I will first say, if this sounds like an advertisement for Nick & Georges, it's because I had an experience there that separated the restaurant from 99.9% of the restaurants I've EVER been. I was not PAID to post this, and I have never been there before yesterday. This place doesn't look like much from the outside- but DON'T let that fool you. This restaurant stands up next to the BEST restaurants I experienced in Chicago, London, Paris and beyond. Probably why they have been family run for over 100 years. The hospitality- I met Pete, a member of the family that runs N & G's, and not only does he stress his personal relationship with his long time customers, he brings new ones like me into their world and shares his passion for his craft. You can tell he loves what he does. I met his mother who handles the food prep- what a sweet lady. The food- Everything is top quality and freshly prepared, and you can tell when you eat. I had a creamy chicken soup ordered an Italian beef sandwich with fries and they offered me a free order of their cole slaw. I DON'T eat cole slaw (EVER) but they insisted I try it. IT WAS AMAZING!! I ate it all! Not like cole slaw anywhere else I have ever been (which i always pass on to my wife), and I was seriously shocked at how much I enjoyed it. The soup, sandwich and uniquely cut fries stand apart from the same items at any restaurant I've been. Again, top quality fresh that you can taste. EVERYONE in NW Indiana (AND beyond) should know about Nick and George's. It is a special place that I am so happy to have stumbled apon while doing business in the area. I insisted on bringing my wife back over the weekend because I know she will love it. If you like finding a "hidden gem" as one of the other reviews said, then this is the place for you.

Went to Nick and George's for the first time today for lunch. Tuesdays special is Stuffed Peppers....if I didn't live 250 miles away I would be there every Tuesday!! The filling was all ground beef and hardly any rice...the way it should be made. You get 2 very large peppers and a scoop of real...yes...real mashed potatoes!!! My Dad ordered the " Monster Steak Sandwich"...it lived up to its name!! Not to mention that it was delicious! My Mom had ordered the stuffed peppers. I ordered the Italian beef sandwich...not a lot of overpowering spices..just the right amount of flavor. And my husband ordered a burger which was great too. Let' s critique the handcut fries....I usually don't like this type of French fry...I find them to be very greasy...but I will definitely order them here again..they were thick cut and not greasy!! In my travels back and forth to the Chicago area I will seek out this restaurant on every trip!!

I've been going here with my uncle for years. Well, only at this actual building a few times, because they used to be located in a different section of Downtown Hammond. From what I understand Al Capone used to eat at the original building, so it's a shame it no longer exists, but the new building has a much nicer appearance and is much easier to find. The old place was pretty much hidden. For years I thought the actual name was "The Cancer Clinic", but apparently that's just a weird knick-name. Now that I know the real name I never refer to it as that anymore because it just sounds wrong. My uncle and I do like to call it "Naked George's" though, because if you say it really fast that's the way it sounds. Anyways, I highly recommend "Nick & George's", because their food is "da bomb" so to speak. They have really tasty burgers, and one day I might try everything else on the menu, but so far I've always gotten the burgers because they're pretty awesome. So far I've never experienced rude or bad service neither. They have real nice waitresses and staff. It's just a great little burger joint.

Nick and George's is exactly what you would hope it would be from the looks of the place. The staff is friendly, the service is fast, the decor is non-fancy and warm, the food is pretty good, and the prices are cheap. It was a Tuesday, so of course I had the stuffed-pepper special, which was filling and yet didn't seem nearly as overwhelmingly unhealthy as a steak sandwich with fries. The whole affair was a little bland, although much improved by a liberal coat of salt and pepper. Actually, it might be the best stuffed pepper I've ever had outside of Mexican cuisine. Four stars would be a stretch on the basis of the food alone, but given both the service and the poor competition, I'm erring on the side of generosity.
