Great place to have breakfast, lunch, and dinner with family. Very fast service. The waiters are very nice and always check up on you to ask if you need anything else. The bread rolls and croissants are delicious. The soup wasn't that great I had the creme of chicken and rice. I also ordered the johnels special sandwich with turkey breast and turkey bacon. I love turkey! It was alright not all that great as it sounded maybe bc the tomatoes tasted too soggy. The raspberry ice tea was delicious!!!! Other than that the waiters make you feel very welcome and bring your food right away. I was surprised it was fast service especially on a Sunday it was a little packed there. I recommend if you're looking for a breakfast, lunch, or dinner place to eat for the whole family and are looking for fast service.

Just another exceptional diner of the Midwest. Nothing is fantastic, but thy do know how to treat you right when it comes to service. The food is good for the price, and they completely overlook portions, so you'll always end up with a to go Baggie at the end. The lemon rice soup is a must, as far as I'm concerned!

I was pleasantly surprised... again... when I ate here yesterday (the last time was about a year ago). I didn't have high expectations because 1) this restaurant is right next to a hotel, 2) it's a diner, 3) the menu was like a bible. I actually ate at Johnel's a year ago for lunch with a client and forgot. My meal was good, 3 stars. Though the decor is "outdated diner", they have a humongous selection of breakfast lunch, dinner and dessert. I remember the Lemon chicken soup was good and you really cannot go wrong with steak and eggs (which was cooked to my request, medium rare). Even steak restaurants have a hard time cooking the steak at a perfect med-rare. For the price, it was a really good deal. I usually expect diner type restaurants to serve mediocre tasting (liked a 3 stars), however, considering the options around here. This place deserves a 4 star because of the good prices and the food quality vs. the other options around.

A popular, nicer than usual Greek restaurant. Standouts are the corned beef hash, beef stroganoff special, and key lime pie. It's hit or miss on service and Sunday mornings are too busy for me.

The service and food was wonderful!! The homemade croissants are so good and buttery and flaky. I had to buy 6 of them to take home. The chicken salad stuffed melon was an awesome. We got a lot of food for the cost of it. After eating at restaurants for the last 3 weeks, this was home cooking food. If I lived here, I would come all the time. But next time I come to this area, I will stop here for sure.

Warm and cozy welcome. Great service throughout the whole meal. Food is traditional American, not the best food I've ever had but great value for the price. The lemon rice soup was delicious. Great place to eat diner on our way through town

Great family spot off of calumet ave in Hammond. This place never is a disappointment when it comes to diner food. Great service and very spacious. I have been going here since I was in high school and now I take my kids. This place gets fully packed in the weekends and they have great breakfast food. I usually eat here for breakfast or lunch

The breakfast is really really good. Staff is great and it's always clean. Croissants are extremely good. This is by far my favorite breakfast restaurant.

the Yankee pot roast it was bland no flavor, the salad was plain and to much lettuce. My kids got sandwiches and french fries they said they did not care for it. The service was slow and the chocolate cake was hard and dry.

Ignore all the local reviews if you're out of town. The best part of this place was the free bread. The much talked about lemon soup is no more than citrusy progresso chicken soup being passed off as such. In no way does it resemble Greek chicken lemon soup. I ordered the Athenian chicken against my better judgement vs the fried chicken. It was a sad chicken composed of a mix of parts with soggy, not crispy skin. The seasoning was not bad, but it could not keep the overall chicken from culinary purgatory. However, the Grecian potatoes were not bad nor were the fried pickles, but the breading was more spectacular due to a lack of pickle. On a final note, the group I ate with left half their food and only about 2-3 out of 8-10 eating took something home in a box. So....lots of food, just not very good. I'd definitely pass this place up, but it might do it for you if you're a local. I did get a kick out of reviews that mentioned driving 1.5 hours for chicken lemon soup or hitting this place up on NYE?!?!?!?

  • Coka B.

I love this place. They have the best chix lemon rice soup thus far! I use to work here when I was 16 and the recipes stayed the same. Every time I go home to hammond, I try my best to stop in. Even if it's for a piece of pie or cake. They also deliver to the hotels in the plaza. Monte cristo sandwich- LOVE!

This place has ruined breakfast skillets at other restaurants for me. I am always comparing them to Johnels skillets and they just can't compete. The Johnels skillet and veggie skillet are the best I have ever eaten anywhere. Ask me about the Lemon Rice soup and I will tell you that it is perfect. So perfect I order quarts of soup to have at home. I have tried the hamburgers and clubs and those satisfy as well. Mention the Johnels skillet and my mouth instantly waters. Yum.

Why is this rated 4 stars??!?!?? Why?!?!?!? Would you rate a Denny's 4 stars? The food was mediocre at best and the service was at a crawl! I had fried smelt, fried shrimp, fried scallops and fried halibut. The shape was the only clue to which was which.

    (1)
  • Marie L.

Very tasty breakfast skillets. My husband looooves their three meat omelet. Good pancakes. Service, however, was dreadful. Waitress bypassed our table twice with coffee pot, didn't bring the bill for ages, forgot a couple items. It wasn't even terribly busy at the time.

A great Greek owned restaurant serving good, home style food. My favorite is probably their lemon rice soup. I always try and stop by for l lunch or dinner when I'm in town.

Ate here on New Year's Eve before the festivities at Horseshoe Casino. I had already read some reviews here before we went, and was hoping they'd have the lemon rice soup. They did! And it was GOOD! I ordered from their specials of the day -- a Grecian style chicken breast served over rice. The sauce on top of the chicken was much like the lemon soup -- paired with the Grecian seasonings and the char of the grill -- it was delicious!! I devoured my meal and left happily stuffed. My friend had the roast turkey -- and she couldn't finish there was so much food. I just wish Johnel's was closer!!! I'm about an hour and 20 minutes from there, but you better believe that I will be looking for a reason to make my way out there again soon. Next time I'm ordering the skirt steak and eggs!! I'm a SUCKER for skirt steak, and I have high expectations.... sooooo..... we'll see if they can fill it.

Good family style restaurant, with a huge menu. I also recently had for lunch an amazing amount food for $10.00. I had their fried smelt lunch for $8.75, which was ok, but the smelt basically was a generous serving of heavily battered fried frozen fish sticks. For another $1.25, I made it a complete dinner, which meant in addition I got a vegetable noodle soup, a salad, a small bowl of cottage cheese, and a dessert - a huge slice of carrot cake. Probably the most non-buffet amount of food I've ever gotten for $10.

  • Soly Z.

Super nice staff. We were starving when we got there so my high rating may be bumped up b/c of the hunger talking. We stopped by on our drive across Indiana at around 9:30 pm. The Greek chicken dinner was great, and the parmesan chicken sandwich was super moist. Both meals came with french fries. The lemon chicken & rice soup was delicious - apparently it's their specialty. The portions are generous & the overall experience was positive.

  • Nix G.

The food is good. Not spectacular or something I would crave. Not sure if Ill be back again. Service was good and quick. And they have a $1.75 add on to any meal which get you soup, salad, vegtable and dessert. So that's a good value. I wasn't impressed or disappointed just kind of meh. My husband on the other hand compared it to nursing home food.

A friend of mine lives down the block from this place and I insist that we go there every time I'm in town. Holy cheapness! I forget how expensive living in Chicago can be. A giant plate of AMAZING biscuits and gravy with a side of suspiciously good (ie: most likely filled with butter/sooo fattening) scrambled eggs set me back $6. Coffee hit the spot after a night of insomnia: also cheap, constantly refilled, freshly brewed and strooong. And the cornbread! The freakin' cornbread! I'm no size zero but I can see why I was one of the most petite patrons here... Heh... I had to. Hammond might not have JapaneseThaiMiddleEasternIndianLatin&so on like we do, but they have Johnel's. Touché, Indiana. Touché.

  • Justin G.

Well, I was only here once today, but if I move to this area, I'll probably be seeing a fair amount of this place. Only like 3 blocks from the expressway, it's convenient to get to if you're visting Hammond or heading out. And if you're in a hurry, that's good too, since I think I was in and out in a half hour. I came around 3pm and had a $10.95 breakfast of a marinated skirt steak, 2 eggs scrambled and a healthy side of hash browns...what John T. also cited in his review. While I wouldn't say that anything was the best I've had, it was all very solid and four stars in every aspect. While I'm sitting here talking about breakfast food, let me turn 180 and also say they've also got a bar on the other side.

Love this place because the food is always exceptional! I highly recommend it to anyone in the area or visitors that are staying in Hammond, IN. It's the only place in nearby Hammond where someone can get a phenomenal skirt steak and eggs for less than $11.

A great family restaurant with a large (but not too large) menu and daily specials. Whether breakfast, lunch or dinner, service has always been friendly and efficient. Good sized portions are the norm and the food, while not gourmet, is quite delicious. There is a selection of soup daily; and unlike some restaurants, it is never too salty. It has a nice home-made flavor. And as a bonus, you can order a cocktail, beer or glass of wine with your meal. Definitely the place to go if you live in or are passing through the area for a tastey meal.

  • Ginger R.

It's true that this restaurant offers large portions at reasonable prices, but, other than breakfast, what they serve is lukewarm, cafeteria quality food -- canned veggies (yuck!), fish that obviously isn't fresh, hard baked potatoes that have been sitting for who knows how long. I'll choose a chain restaurant over this one in the future.

I like this place. They close kind of early so thats not great. The food is good and its not pricey either. The staff is really nice. The soups are good. The portions of some of their food are huge. I love the chicken parmessan. Its huge and really taste it. Really recommend it :)

I went there for dinner on a Friday night when I was staying in Hammond for the evening. I don't know if someone was out with the swine flu or had a funeral to attend, but the service was SLOW. Granted, several tables walked in as we did, but it seems like someone should have a contingency plan for, I don't know, people actually trying to eat there. So, we finally got our drink order in. Then, much later, our food order. We were ready for another round of drinks (everyone was having whiskey) and they apparently had to go next door to get more whiskey. Wow, Johnel, you're really not looking on the bright side. 4 drinks dried you out? Three of us had open-faced turkey sandwiches with cranberry sauce, which were pretty good-- the gravy was a little overwhelming. One had the Greek omelet and he was pretty disappointed. He said it tasted like there was only feta cheese in it, no tomatoes or olives. One of us had the crepes and she seemed happy. Seriously though, Johnel, we want to give you money for drinks. Please give me more drinks so I can give you more money.

This place used to be awful, well not awful I guess, just not anything very special. Luckily they built a new restaurant, and the parking lot is where the old restauarant was once located. The new restaurant is much better than the old one used to be. It looks pretty nice inside, and the waitresses are much better than the old ones. The service is good, and the food is not bad. Ironically, the worst part of the place is the bar area, which was the one promising thing in the old restaurant. I used to hang out in this bar with my friends, but mainly because we knew the bartender because we used to work with her. Since she left, we hardly see a reason to go there.
