I have eaten at this location the last 30 odd years. Notice I say location because I have eaten here under the oldest owners, older owners and now the current. Thus, I fancy myself somewhat of an authority on the question of the food and service here at the now location. The staff has changed some, yet some of the most pleasant smililing faces are still the same such as Dave in the bar. Dave always is friendly as well as an excellent bartender. I do not know the names of the kitchen staff but presume many are long timers since many of the menu items are unchanged from the last 30+ years such as the Chicken Livers w/green onions.....need I say more! Where else do you still get free delicious cheeseball and relish tray?!?!?!
My husband and I went here for dinner tonight. The food was pretty decent, the prices were good, it was very clean, and the water wheel room was a really unique atmosphere! We enjoyed the mashed potatoes, and the roast was very tender and delicious. The house dressing was also very good! The macaroni and cheese was a bit bland and chewy though. The hostess was friendly, however our waitress, J.V., was very rude and ignored us a few times when we spoke to her. Aside from her, we had a pretty good experience.
Food is mediocre at best. Except the blue cheese dressing, which is excellent. Some of the staff is friendly, a few are questionable, and the new owner is absolutely rude. Will not be returning.
I'm surprised that this place wasn't busy, even though it was 4 p.m. I was photographing some AAU basketball games at the high school and there weren't any customers when I entered. When I saw the floor mats on top of the trash cans, I thought that they were closing--6 hours early. I took a couple of minutes to decide since I don't know the menu very well, and got the Subway Melt. It was interesting to see bacon going into it and when she asked what cheese, I decided on Pepper Jack. Another employee was ringing up the sale and asked what I wanted to drink, and I replied that I wanted Mountain Dew. She didn't tell me that it wasn't available and didn't ask what size I wanted. Since they only have Coca-Cola products, I ended up with green tea that tasted (and looked) like brown tea. Besides that, I got a little snicker, as one looked at the other with a smirk. Why? I don't know. Finding a place to sit, I think all of the tables were dirty. Let me guess--3 employees goofing off and no clean tables? That makes sense. The sandwich was good and even the tea was good. I noticed the other trash can had a floor mat on it. It just seems odd. They didn't really do anything wrong, but other than the sandwich, they didn't do anything really right, either. Hagerstown is probably pleased to have another place available after games at the school.
