I love South Side Soda Shop (or S to the 4th as I call it). I came here all the time when I was little. I finally managed to make it back around Christmas time. It was just as I remembered. The quarter pound burger with cheddar and bacon was just juicy enough. The yummy, fresh, greasy spiral cut fries which is enough to share with a friend. The cherry and vanilla phosphates. The homemade desserts. I had the pumpkin cheesecake which had a gingersnap crust. It was so good.

Restored Diner.. Very friendly people. Went around to the side by mistake only for the chef in the window to point me where the entrance is. The people here are so darn friendly you can really see it in their faces & smiles. I hear the clean cut crisp middle American accent in the diners voice two booths up as I'm drinking my cherry PHOSPHATE soda... dELICIOUs :D! Wow that is good! I ordered the ITALIAN cheese steakkk sub... (by mistake on the Swedish Limpa bread) Gott corrected on the choice of bread.. so made for some good conversation lOl. I've been driving around the country for awhile and just have recently been hitting hitting Guy's DDD's. Pics are taken. :)

Small, retro diner, complete with friendly service, nostalgic atmosphere, and quality down-home cooking. The Philly Chili was great, and a must for anyone visiting from out of town. Desserts, especially pies, definitely complete the experience. It's a small diner, and can get a bit crowded during lunch. Seems to overwhelm the wait staff a bit, could use a few more hands. If stopping in during lunch, there may be a line, and if you are able to grab a seat, hopefully you have plenty of time to sit down and enjoy.

I saw the South Side Soda Shop on FoodNetwork maybe 6 years ago and I now go there as frequently as possible. The food is fantastic, the service is always friendly (the lady that rings you out could be your own Grandma she is so sweet), and it is totally worth the drive. Parking is a bit of a pain but the food makes it worth it. I would definitely consider this one of the finer hidden gems in the area!

I really like the atmosphere and the food is very good. Their homemade pie selection is unrivaled.

We love Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, and since we were going to Goshen for Christmas with the family, the boyfriend surprised me by taking me to the South Side Soda Shop. The owner is from Philly, so naturally the diner specializes in Philly sandwiches. Not being a fan of cheese steaks myself, I instead got the clam chowder (and I could have just ordered more of that and been happy - it was delicious) and a turkey hoagie. The sandwich was so big that I took it home for lunch the next day and still made Brad eat half. I do have to mention that I didn't start with the sandwich. I ordered the seafood pasta and I can't recommend it. The noodles were beyond bland, and the shrimp were almost as flavorless. I asked the server to take it back (and I HATE sending food back, I just never do it), and she gladly offered to bring me something else. Then we got pie to take home with us. I picked raspberry creme, and it was quite good. My recommendation to anyone visiting is to stick to items on the menu that the place is known for, like the Phillys or the burgers or the chili (or the truly fantastic clam chowder), and you will not be disappointed - leave the seafood pasta to someone else.

Service was good, our waitress was clearly working very hard running all over the place. I thought the food was good, exactly what you would expect from small town America. The lemon meringue pie was fantastic. I like my pies with more crust though, this pie is all about the filling and the meringue.

I'll just say this place has been around for a verrrryy long time! And there is a veryyyy good reason it has been! Magnificent place!

We always visit goshen, and we love triple D, so of course we had to visit here. Nothing super spectacular, just a decent diner. Peanut butter pie is super sweet, so wasn't so good. This is the place where guy dared to make a pure syrup green river. Food is decent, decor is authentic, not a bad place.

Best cheese steaks outside of Philly itself. Good chili and the desserts are delicious.

We came here based on the fact that they were on Diners Drive-Ins and Dives combined with the positive reviews here on Yelp and we were not disappointed. I wish I could give half stars because I would give them 4.5, but I just cannot give them five stars, as I will detail below. We started with a Chocolate malt for our daughter and a strawberry shake for myself and my wife opted for a vanilla diet coke. We all tried each other's drinks and loved them all. As my wife said, "They were nummy!" For an appetizer, I had a side salad and a mug of their Snapping Turtle soup. It is not something I had had before, so I wanted to give it a try. I am so glad I did because it was great, it had a ton of flavor and lots of chunks of turtle in it. I will definitely keep an eye open for it elsewhere. Here is the reason for the loss of what I wish could only be half a star...my wife had the Chicken noodle soup, which, flavor-wise, was bland and had an 'off-taste' to it. We barely had even four spoonfuls of it. My wife had the liverwurst and bacon sandwich - which she happily devoured. The bacon was nice and crispy and gave a good textural contrast to the "half-inch slabs" of liverwurst and was topped with sauteed onions. I had the crab cakes - which are among the best (if not THE BEST) I have ever had. They were packed with crab and very little 'filer'. They were perfectly cooked, seared and crunchy on the outside, tender and moist on the inside and just exploding wiht crab flavor. Dee-Lish! Our daughter, as kids are known to do, went kid-basic and had a PB&J with a side of the curly fries which were obviously fresh cut and perfectly cooked. We wish they were closer to home, or at least closer to the interstate so we could stop in more frequently...

I generally like it here but I wish they could step up their French fry game.

I have stopped by South Side Soda Shop (s^4) several times now and have yet to come away disappointed. I have had some hiccups in service (I got the wrong slice of pie once, but it was still tasty) but otherwise this place is great. I haven't quite figured out their rotation of pies yet as some days there are upwards of 20 varieties and some days there are closer to 8. All the pies I've encountered have been good though. Though I enjoy the pie, the rest of the food I've had has also been excellent, especially for the price. I cannot yet speak for the large dinner items but all the 5 or 6 different sandwiches I've tried so far I've enjoyed. This is heavily due to the quality of the bread used for the buns and the filling always has tasted fresh. Though I've only tried it once, but will again, the ice cream is quite good and though the selection isn't enormous, the quality is still good. This place can be tricky to get into during peak dining hours as the seating can be limited, but the wait is worth it. Otherwise S^4 offers a variety of things to look at while waiting for your food including looking at all the classic diner memorabilia and small sets of Trivial Pursuit cards at every table.

There are some wonderful places in Goshen, which is a surprisingly clean and friendly old town. But SSSS is the best, in my opinion. Everything they make is delicious. My particular favorites are the seafood dishes. They always have many delicious specials available. Their pies are absolutely wonderful.

  • Les M.

The food is not bad, but I really don't see what all this small town hype is about! I had the basic cheese burger, a root beer vanilla soda, and the spiral fries, and for dessert, an apple crisp. ( I had to do the whole deal, since it was my first time!) The cheeseburger had that "beefy" grill flavor, the veggies were fresh, and the cheddar was yummy, so all was good. The spiral fries were really oily But I'm at a diner so that comes along with it, again all good. The apple crisp...not good. Really stale, apples weren't sweet, the pie/crisp does not stand in this mennonite town(the pies in this town are hard to stand strong next to in all fairness). I do plan to go again and try more on the menu, so I'll give it an update then. For now, two stars for the South Side Soda Shop.

  • William M.

Their "philly cheesesteak" is to die for. Nick imports his buns direct from Philadelphia and this sandwich is the best ever. There are 25 homemade pies baked fresh daily to choose from. All deserts are made from scratch. Weekend specials usually include a fish selection shipped in fresh. If you have a sweet tooth this is the place for you. Some of the dishes were a little bland and could use some more spice. This is a true soda shop and well worth the experience. We have visited the SSSS six or eight times. A good destination.

OMGAWD this place is heaven! I had a cherry coke float. M. I just can't say enough about this greasy spoon, except everytime I go to Goshen I end up gaining 5 lbs b/c of this place!

  • Nick R.

We always try to stop here when in the area. I like the Italain sub, the spiral fries are wonderful, and the desserts are to die for! Love the pecan pie!

  • Pam H.

This is one of my favorites! Everything I've tried has been delicious and of course I always have to get dessert! It's always hard to decide between one of the homemade pies or the ice cream. The atmosphere is fun, too!

  • Mary D.

The food was as expected. Had a Reuben and spiral cut potato fries. Everything perfect and especially the spiral fried potato. Lemon meringue pie the best with just the perfect amount of lemon tart flavor not a pucker but just close will return if ever here again. The diner atmosphere was just old style small town

  • JK S.

Not just for the tourists. Attentive service, typically large diner menu with good food quality. Fresh spiral potatoes will be quickly devoured. Pies look humble, but deliver with excellent flavor and texture.

A hometown favorite! I've been going there since I was a child, and I've never been disappointed. Hamburgers, spiral fries and green rivers, oh my! Whether you prefer ice cream, brownies or pie, you will want to make room for dessert. A best bet for family fun and outstanding service. Nick, Charity, and the rest of the SSSS team are always a pleasure!

Purchased 4 different meals & all were bland/tasteless or had poor flavor. Service was acceptable but not great. Had heard good things about SSSS but I honestly don't know why. No comp on our bill. Will not return nor recommend it.

This is one of our favorite local places for a laid back dinner. Each of our family members have their favorite items, but we all insist on having their fresh cut fries. I enjoy their Italian sandwich. They've been featured on food network.

Wonderful food ! Better cheese steak sandwich than at Pat King's in Philly. Would give more stars if I could !!!

  • Renee S.

We drove over specifically for a lunch. It was fine. The best were desserts. Nothing spectacular on the food. Surprised me to see as many seafood items on the menu. We didnt get any, so maybe we missed the boat there. We had a rueben and italian cheesesteak with a bowl of chili and fries. Desserts were raspberry creme pie and raspberry cheesecake choc chip ice cream. I would stop in again, but just for desserts and see what they had for seafood. The scallop fettucine the people behind us had looked very good. I am glad we didnt go at prime time, it was 2pm and the parking is a pain. Also, the diner is small so be prepared for a wait if they are busy. Excellent service!

Fun atmosphere, good service, authentic diner experience. A standard diner menu, good-not-great food, yummy desserts. Worth the drive and worth the money.

Looks like a dive from the outside, is a little better on the inside. The food was fantastic. The chili and the cheesesteak was amazing. The pies were fantastic. My wife got the cookie ice cream sandwich which was really good. I recommend this place despite what it looks like.

Excellent place to eat if you're ever in Goshen and want to get the nostalgic diner experience. My brother and I drove down from Michigan after seeing the place on Triple D, and it was even better than we had anticipated. You really can't go wrong with anything off the sandwich menu here, with a classic fountain style drink to complement. The menu is surprisingly diverse, with expanded options for dinner. My only complaint is that parking is kind of a pain, since it's all street parking.

I've been here once and I must say.... they make a mean sandwich. awesome ambiance, friendly staff, and good soda. And try the pie.

The South Side Soda Shop is a great "old fashioned" diner that has great diner food, pies, and yummy shakes. it is a favorite local and college hangout with great prices that will not hurt your pocket.

Without a doubt, one of the best restaurants I have ever been to. I just wish I didn't live 3 hours away. Two buddies and I first visited when we were doing a bit of a tour of Ohio/Michigan/Indiana going to see Minor League Baseball games and eating at places we had seen on Diner's Drive-Ins and Dives. We couldn't decide what we wanted, but we were visited by the owner of the place (I can't remember his name) and he kind of talked us through things. Mike got the Philly Cheese Steak after hearing that the bread was flown in from Philly and he loved it. Matt and I both ordered one of the specials of the night, the Seafood Feast. It was one of the best things either of us had ever eaten and it was really big. But because Mike enjoyed his Philly Steak so much, Matt and I decided we would share one of those before we made the trek back to Ohio. It was fantastic. We were completely stuffed, but it was worth it. Mike saved room for dessert, but Matt and I couldn't bring ourselves to order any more. But Mikes pie looked so good that when he got up to use the restroom, we ate his pie too. Anyways, the food and the people were fantastic. I have made the trip twice more just to go there to eat and then turn around and head home. Love it!

We really loved this place. The philly cheese steak was good. They fly the bread from Philadelphia to keep it fresh and to make sure the sandwich has the best taste. I lived in Phila for 6 years back in the 80s and ate cheese steaks weekly. Their version of the steak sandwich was very good, i really loved it. Plus, we bought a pie to take home and the family loved it.

Looks can be deceiving! The menu is amazing! This is NOT your granma's soda shop. If you find yourself in, or near, Goshen, IN, you owe it to yourself to drop in. Closed on Sundays.

  • Paul W.

Stopped for a bite when we were passing thru Goshen. Saw the great reviews on Yelp. Have to second these reviews. Very good food and great service. Had the philly cheese steak (great), philly chili (good), and ice cream (great and creamy). Also stole a sip of my daughters green river soda (great if you like lime and I do). Nice little diner and definitely worth it if you are in the area.

The only complaint I have about this place is the parking, it's not very good, but the location kind of prevents any improvement in that area from what I can see. Aside from that, this is one of my favorite places to eat, the food is great and I love the retro diner feel. I reccomend the #8, it's my favorite sandwich. Also, if you're not full after you eat, the pies are delicious.

  • Martin E.

Great food - Philly Cheese Steak sandwich was very good, good atmosphere, friendly staff. Spiral fries were good, but I wished they had some seasoning salt ( but that's minor). My wife (low carb) had good options as well and had a hearty salad with jumbo shrimp. We passed on the famous pie, not that it didn't look fantastic! All good.

Just happened to pass by Goshen, Indiana on the way from Cleveland to Chicago, so I had to stop by the place that was featured on Diner's, Drive-Ins and Dives. We tried the Philly Cheese Steak, obviously, and also the #8, the spiral fries, and the orange phosphate. The #8 was pretty decent and an interesting and unique flavor combination; the Philly Cheese Steak surprisingly lacked flavor. It was much less oily than a typical Philly Cheese Steak though, which I liked. The spiral fries were fairly typical but pretty good, as was the orange phosphate. The waitresses here are used to random people coming in just because they watched Triple D, and they are very nice and offer good recommendations.

I've been going to SSSS since I was in the 2nd grade at Parkside Elementary. This place is a solid, solid choice if you're in the area. I love that Goshen has so many non-chain places to eat that are actually good. I look forward to eating here every time I'm back home in Goshen. The owner is from Philly, so order an Philly Cheese-steak is a NO BRAINER. I actually order a chicken version, but it's still great. The amoroso rolls are used here too. I'm telling you - it's legit. The desserts are tempting and they'll bring you a tray of all the desserts they're offering that night. Try saying "no" to that! Seriously, if you're in the area - and by area, I mean within 30 miles - you should really make a trip here. It's soooo worth it.

We have been going to SSSS for years. We enjoy the diner atmosphere. The philly cheese steak is really good and love the phosphates! I enjoy the hamburgers and fries also. The service is always exceptional. We will continue to enjoy going there then ever we are in Goshen.

Was here in 2010 and good was good. Guess what, the food is still good. The service is very good. The chili is very good. Wanted the seafood feast, but they were sold out. Decided on the Philly cheese steak which was very good.

  • Kim B.

Overall, yes, I am a fan of the Soda Shop. I can't give it the full 5 stars, however, because the service has been hit or miss lately. (We sat about 5 minutes before our waitress even took our drink order...there were no other customers in our section. Then we waited another 5-10 to get said drinks...heck, our food even came before our drinks!) Try as I might to order something different anytime we eat here, I always fall back on old reliable - Philly Pizza Steak basket with spiral fries and a diet Cherry Coke. Never a bad meal when I've ordered this. The one time I did order something different, I was severely disappointed. So, stick with what you know. One very important lesson: save room for pie. I know, I know...after gorging yourself on that Pizza Steak the last thing you want to do is consume dessert, but please - for the love of all that is good and right in this world - order a slice of pie. Fresh strawberry if they have it, or the chocolate cream. MMmmm....pie....

Lived in Elkhart county my whole life but never tried this place till I saw it on tv... figured I better give it a try. It does seem to be a popular place but I'm not sure why. The Philly cheese steak was featured on the show and that is what I had. It was blah, nothing exciting. The bread was good but I've had much better steak sandwiches. My wife had a burger and it was greasy and so so as well. Fries were cold. Shakes were good and the phosphates were okay as well. Service was very lacking! We waited 30 minutes to order(and they were not busy) and the server reminded me of a lunch lady. The throw back atmosphere is the positive side of this place. It feels like you stepped back in time. All in all I don't see myself returning.

  • Peter B.

It is a cute place. I thought the food was ok. We were too full for dessert which probably would have been the star not sure I would get off of I80 to come here but if you are nearby or with kids, give it a go.

My husband, uncle and I stopped in on the way to Green Bay because this place was featured on Diners Drive Ins and Dives. We were a little underwhelmed; Still, we found good food reasonably priced in a charming old-school setting. We enjoyed the sweet Green River phosphate but found the other phosphates unremarkable and bland. I loved the turkey BLT croissant, perfect in every way, but thought the spiral fries were too greasy (still, they beat frozen any day!). My husband was disappointed with his cheese steak (hello, where's the beef?) and chili, but he enjoyed the liverwurst (as did I-loved the crunchy bacon texture with the smooth liverwurst). And yes, we actually ordered all of this at once- things were so reasonably priced, and we figured we may not pass this way again. We were stuffed by the meal's end, but we all ordered pie to go for later this evening. The pies did not disappoint. I highly recommend the one that's like a Toll House cookie- so good served warm!

I was born in Goshen, half my family lives there, so I knew of the SSSS way before it was on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives on Food Network. The SSSS is an awesome little gem. All of the food is fresh and home-made and mighty tasty. The chili is awesome. The owner is from Philly so he even makes a good cheesesteak. Burgers, sandwiches, Swedish stuff, did I mention the hand-cut spiral fries? Mmmmmm. And then there's dessert. From-scratch Menno-style pies, awesome ice cream sundaes, shakes, and other tasty treats. And you can get any sort of bizarre soda combination you want. I stick to vanilla coke, but my husband's had green river and his own creation - a vanilla-orange soda. Every time I'm back in Goshen, I want to go there.

Stopped in here back in September as we were visiting a family member in the Goshen hospital. After many staff at the hospital told us we "must" try this place we tried it out. After asking the waitress for suggestions, who clearly did not know the menu, she finally admitted it was her first day (literally). After paying attention to the tables around us... most of the staff was working their first week. Ok, I get that it's a college town and I'm sure the staff is as seasonal as the semesters... but there should be at least one or two experienced staff on the floor. I ordered the Rueben and I'm pretty sure it gave back more than I put in. The food was ok.. but the aftermath wasn't.

This is another place I like to eat at when I go home to visit the family. They have some veggie options and I love their spiral fries. Everyone that works there is friendly and it's not super expensive. I appreciate that the food is made fresh and not totally processed and the joint definitely has its' charm for sure. Not the greatest place in the world but for the price it's definitely worth checking out.

Went back this visit to Goshen and fount the food to be even better than I remembered. I had the Philly Cheese steak and it was amazingly good. I found out from talking to the owner part of the magic to this cheese steak is that the bread is brought in from Philly! Authentic as can be. My old school green river phosphate hit the spot as well. The fresh cut curly fries I shared with my friend were not your standard fries! This old school soda shop is just what I remembered and hit the spot on my most recent Goshen Visit!
