We're travelers from Kentucky, so an hour and a half trip to Evansville for various recreation is once in a blue moon. In April, we ate at Gherst Haus across the street, and decided to try the Italian affair this time. The atmosphere is very classico, there but lacking the wow-look-at-this-place factor. We visited at 1:00 on a Sunday. We were promptly seated and our drink order taken. About ten minutes went by before we saw our server again. Okay, no big deal, we'll flow with it. I ordered the Franklin Street philly sandwich, my wife ordered the Smittys Greek Special 8" pizza with a side of fettuccine alfredo. The server took our order, brought back some bread and butter, and was never seen again for about 25-30 minutes. The food arrives. My sandwich is OK, not really blown away by it. The bread was the same as the table bread brought out earlier, again, OK, but for $9.00, I was expecting a little more than flavorless meat, soggy french fries and table bread. My wife, on the other hand, got a supreme pizza instead of a greek. It took us 5 minutes to flag down another server to relay the message to our own server. Another 5 minutes passed and our server finally arrived, surprised that the pizza was not what she ordered. She challenged my wife, claiming that she wrote down exactly what my wife said. For the record, my wife DID order the Greek, but I wasn't going to get involved. The server finally relented, took the supreme pizza back and put in an order for the Greek, but not before royally ticking off my wife. We waited another 20 minutes for the new pizza to come back. It arrived and it was ehh, OK. At this point, my wife asked for a to go box, and waited another 5 minutes before one arrived. The check was dropped off, and another 10 minutes to cash out. The total visit was just under 1 hour 45 minutes, which, for a $35 meal, was a little over the top for a post-rush meal time. Our experience was a one star, and it's likely we will not be returning for quite some time. Disappointing.

My husband and I ate dinner there on November 2, 2014 with another couple. 3 of us ended up getting bad cases of food poisoning, which we are still recovering from. Our friend and fellow diner called the Health Department and apparently many other people also got sick recently from eating their lettuce. Since the 3 of us who ordered salads were the ones with severe diarrhea and vomiting, I envy the guy who chose soup instead. I almost went to the hospital because I couldn't keep water down for almost a whole day. In terms of service, the waitress told us she would bring bread to the table twice, which she never did. She was wearing yoga pants, a hoodie and tennis shoes. Since we paid $80 for dinner, it was a little annoying that the person who handled our food looked like she was returning from the gym. Needless to say, I will never return to Smitty's.

Better as a bar and pizza joint. Service now is slow slow slow. And horrible. Food is not that great either.Been there twice won't be a third time.

This place is called Smitty's Italian Steakhouse, but it is not a steakhouse. It is a pub. There were 2 sides to the menu, one a steakhouse style menu, and the other a pub style menu, but the atmosphere is decidedly pub. Everyone in the restaurant looked like they had come straight off their shift at Alcoa (or in Halloween costumes!), and the servers were wearing t-shirts and Toms. Italian bread and butter were served in a red plastic basket with red and white checkered paper and a disposable plastic tub for the butter. We ordered bruschetta for $9.00 which was the same Italian bread with sliced tomatoes, balsamic vinaigrette, and melted mozzarella sprinkled in chopped basil. It tasted good for what it was, but it was not bruschetta. My husband ordered a 12 oz ribeye (cooked medium) for $18.00, which came with a house salad and a side. I ordered the chicken champagne for $15.00, which also came with a salad and a side. The salads looked like Dole salad mix with a chopped red onion and some canned chickpeas added to it. Again, fine, but for what we paid, subpar. We both ordered the Vesuvio potatoes as our side, which was literally just a quartered potato sprinkled with Kraft Parmesan cheese and some Italian seasoning and baked. Could have used some olive oil and garlic salt. Bland. My husband's steak arrived rare and salty. My chicken champagne was bland and grisly and served on a diner-style plate. The servers were prompt and attentive and our food was delivered quickly (maybe too quickly). This restaurant just needs to decide what it is, and what it is is a pub. If we go back, we'll get pizza or burgers and beer.

Use to be a great place to go. Now it's a mish mash of a place. Use to be a great bar. Now it's more of a restaurant that can't make it's mind up: is it a fancy steakhouse, an Italian dinner place, a pizza place or a gourmet burger place??? They totally screwed up a good thing!

We went there for lunch because it looks impressive from outside! Wrong! We ordered spaghetti and meatballs with a ceasar salad. First the bread came! So hard and tough that I could barely pulls a piece off. Very tough and chewy. Then the salads. OH my gosh! The dressing was awful and the salad was big chunks with the stems more so than lettuce leaves. The waitress with her gym clothes on, came and ask us if our salad tasted funny! My husband had just said it tastes like horseradish was in it! Mine did too! She took them back and we refused more of the same. She said she would take a few dollars off our bill for that. Then the spaghetti and meatballs came. Oh no! Pink colored watery sauce stood in the bottom of the bowl. The meatballs looked like they had been around for a year or so! Terroble. My husband said he was afraid to eat it because he was afraid of getting food poisoning. What a mess! We ask for our bill and she said she would take care of it. No problem! We left without lunch. It should call itself something besides Smittys! Replace a letter and well you get what I am saying! We didnt eat enough to get sick. Thank God! DO NOT TO THERE!

Where do I begin. One of the worst meals I've had in quite some time. Among our 3 dishes, each one had an issue. -My bone-in fillet was grossly over cooked (I ordered medium rare and got medium well) -my mom's burger was burnt -her fries were like wet noodles -my dad's chicken was tough I'm not lying when I say the most satisfying part of this meal was the bread & butter. Our table was too small for 3 normal sized people and was also right by the door. Every time the door opened I was smacked with a burst of cold air; this probably occurred 15 times in the course of the meal. The only reason I'm giving two stars is because our waitress was very nice. But good service isn't a good enough reason to return to this place. I will never be back and hope this place seriously reconsiders their food preparation.

Wife and I were in town for our 2 year anniversary, on a recommendation, tried out Smitty's for the first time. Wife had lasagna. It was on par with something you would get at Fazoli's. I had the chicken vesuvio. The chicken was dry, the rice was almost as dry, and there was no flavor. The staff was..........strange. I would call it polite indifference.

When it was a pizza joint the pizza was some of the best in town, now being an Italian steakhouse it has to have some of the worst food ever. My gf got the champagne chicken and it tasted like raw eggs and my steak was over cooked and dry as a bone. I've been there 3 times and the 3rd was the last. The food just isn't worth the price.

Manicotti was ok. Like another helper said some of the food taste like something you would get at Fazolis the Manicotti did just that, except Fazolis has better bread. The bread and butter wasn't good! My bf had the Shrimp scampi with crusted bread crumbs. It was really good and it better have been for $19 for maybe 7 shrimps. I can pay $6 more at Red Lobster for the Ultimate Feast and get shrimp scampi, Walts shrimp, lobster, and crab legs. Not sure if I'll return. I would say give them a try you might have something you really like.

My wife and I went there for a second time to give them another chance after our first dining experience a few months ago was less than stellar at Smitty's. On this second occasion we ordered the toasted ravioli and calamari for our appetizers and then ordered NY strip steaks (16 oz.) for our entree. The ravioli was just "OK" and not like other better tasting ravioli we had from other restaurants. The cheese filling was not melted. The calamari was pitiful...over breaded and tiny pieces. We actually had more breading leftover at the bottom of the serving basket than actual pieces of calamari. Finally, out came our steaks...It would best be described as gristly Ponderosa restaurant style steaks. My wife and I had an excessive amount of fat and gristle on both of our steaks, and the manner in which they were prepared was if they were cooked on a griddle or fully baked in an oven and then brushed with butter sauce. Also, the quality of the steaks, excluding the major gristle, was sub-par...definitely not the cut of meat one would expect to get served in a "steak house". If you ever had a steak in Chicago, you would instantly know what I mean. I addition, my wife's garlic mashed potatoes were lumpy and barely tasted of garlic. On top of this, our waitress never once came by to ask us how were our appetizers or our entrees. Overall, my wife and I were both disappointed in the food and the dining service. I would recommend that you save your money and cook a great tasting and better quality steak on your grill than dine on the Ponderosa versioned steaks at Smitty's.

Great place to have a few drinks and eat some pizza! The Greek pizza is my favorite, and the garlic bread is good too. They have a large patio that is nice in the summer, and they have bands on most weekend nights. The building is really neat, with tall pressed tin ceilings and a huge antique bar. The place gets pretty busy on the weekends, so if you're looking for a quieter, less busy time to visit, go for lunch or in the early evening (things usually don't pick up until after 10 pm.) One of my favorite places in Evansville!

Pizza

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.

Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.

Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
