I really like this place but I feel it can be hit or miss sometimes (as you can see the wide mix of both 5 star and 1 star reviews). When you have a good waitress who is attentive, it makes all the difference if the kitchen staff gets overwhelmed and behind (which has happened to us before). We usually go in large groups and have ordered a variety of things off the menu. The burgers are pretty outstanding and it is definitely the best non-chain restaurant in the area. If you're in a huge rush or ordering something healthy, this probably isn't the best place. If you're enjoying a weekend dinner and looking for something delicious, this is a great option! And major props for some vegetarian-friendly options as well!

Love this place, Great selection of gourmet style burgers. Onion rings and dipping sauce is fantastic! Atmosphere is excellent.

The Flippin Cow definitely impressed and currently has the lead in our own personal burger quest. The place is casual and overlooks Simonton Lake. We were greeted when we walked in and invited to see wherever we liked. We selected a tall top table close to the bar and was greeted immediately by Leslie. She provided us with the menus (inside old album covers) and took our drink orders. They have a pretty good selection of draft beers - I opted for the Oberon and my husband had a Fat Tire ($6 each for a 22oz glass). The menu offers a nice selection of bar-type appetizers, specialty burgers, build-your-own burgers, mac-n-cheese, sandwiches and even a few salads and lighter options that sounded pretty good. Our waitress overhead some of our conversation and didn't hesitate to chime in with recommendations. She also immediately fixed our table when we commented to ourselves that it was wobbly. We ordered the onion rings as an appetizer - they were pretty good, but we would probably opt for another selection the next time. The pretzels and fried pickles have been highly recommended. My husband ordered the Stella Moo which came with two steak burgers, brisket, BBQ sauce, pepper jack cheese and fried onion straws. He loved it. The burgers are on the thinner size and are cooked well done, but his was still very juicy and flavorful. You have the choice to make it a basket with cow chips, hand cut fries or tater tots. He selected the cow chips, which were hand cut potato chips and very good. I ordered the Flippin Melt, which is a take on a patty melt that is served on sourdough. It also came with two steak burgers, swiss, Flippin sauce and carmelized onions. My only complaint was that the onions were a little on the greasy side (although what burger isn't). I ordered the hand cut fries, which were great. Service was top notch and the food was definitely worth the money. We will definitely be back!

Finally! A place to get a really good burger in Elkhart!! One of the options in the build your own burger is a pretzel roll... Please try it, it's so good! The chips are amazing... Homemade and fried they are just YUM! I wish they had a couple of bigger tables. Our party of six barely fit in a booth. Other than that, everything was fantastic!

really? this is a joke ... could see through the "steak patties", bacon on my cheesy uncle burger was thicker than the beef ,my wife built her own and could not even taste the pattie, though she liked the pretzel roll 8.00 a lttle much for bread and lettuce not to mention 1.99 for any fries ,chips,or tots waitress claimed each pattie to be 1/4 pound ,i think they weighed the basket with the tots to come up with this. such a waste of good real estate the lakeshore was a decent place for sandwiches and pizza before ,now just now just overpriced gimmick, steak and shake on a lake. also stay away from the fried pickles you get around 10 bread and butter chips in a basket of grease......and how much for all this goodness: 4 beers,2(not the fancy) burgers, chips, tots, and of course the pickles, wait for it.........$44.00+tip, you have been warned

Overall not a bad experience. Food was great. The only downfall was it seemed to be understaffed as we were checked on when we ordered and when we wanted our check. For me if I'm going out to eat I at least want someone to check on me. Also it was a little loud atmosphere that wasn't an issue for me but may be for some families. Although this place is perfect for after a long day on the lake.

Fun place, good food, busy, good beer selection, great view. Our service was fine but did see a table that had an issue.

Great little place on the lake in Elkhart. My new favorite food is now Buffalo Chicken Mac and Cheese. OMG The service was good. A nice find do far from home.

A little bit disappointed about this one. My family and I went because we heard it was known for its shakes. They have a nice $1.99 for a regular burger (no fries) special every week, which is a pretty good deal for all the frugal people out (holla!). I ended up getting a regular burger, a milkshake, and split an order of fries. Everything was decent diner food... except for the shake. The bottom HALF of the shake was melted (we're talking "sugary milk" here) when it arrived at the table. There are two explanations that come to mind: that they just used too much milk, or that they made it WAY before the rest of the food was ready. It was probably the latter, and while I understand that they might have had a new hire, or just made a mistake, it was disappointing enough that I'm not rearing to try this restaurant again.

Great food. Pretty good staff. They always have a burger or sandwich if the week which is nice to always have something new. Only negatives are there is little parking, which is somewhat remedied by the fact that there is a business across the road with a big lot, and the waitstaff and kitchen can get overwhelmed when it's busy. We've had to wait almost an hour when they are full. But we still keep coming back its so good.

Wow, great food AND a terrible dining experience?! How is this business legally allowed to sell so many "bud lights" to the same small group of hand shuffleboard fanatics and not lose their liquor license? Maybe their Notre Dame apparel was enough to convince the staff that it was ok to let them ruin the atmosphere for EVERYONE else in the restaurant by being so loud and belligerent?

This place was highly recommended by a local person and he was right! If you want to have some good burgers and onion rings, this is the place. Nice location by the water, simple and to the point!

Ate here for the first time today. Burgers were great. I had the homemade cow chip potato chips, and the family had fries. Both were good. I would recommend this place if you like burgers. We will be back.

We went to the Flippin Cow because I had heard about how great their burgers were. Boy, what a disappointment! First off, the "seat yourself" concept works at a bar, but if you want to be a big boy restaurant, you better have someone seating people. We waited 30+ mins for a table for 5 people (2 of which were children) while there were 2 large tables in the "patio or porch" area with a couple at each. By seating these customers at a smaller table there would have been more room for larger parties. Secondly the larger tables are picnic style benches with no backs - hard to sit on for an extended period of time. AND THE NOISE - wow!! It is so loud in there it's like eating in a tin can. There is a little music and tv noise but all that can be heard is a high level of "crowd noise" of others in the place. We had to shout at the waitress so she could hear our order. All this aside - hopefully the food would redeem the place and not make this a wasted trip. I ordered the Uncle Cheesy thing which was supposed to be a burger with mac and cheese on top. if you call boiled elbow macaroni noodles in melted Velveeta mac and cheese - I guess this qualifies. The meat - you know the main part of a burger was hardly seasoned and bland. My wife built her own and was disappointed as well - little flavor, bland seasoning. My daughter got the Crunch - which was actually the best of the 3 - not great but compared to the others OK. The other kids got tater tots which were overcooked and hard. All in all I could have done better at home. Overall if you want to party and don't mind eating somewhere that is so loud you can't even hear people across the table from you then go ahead and go there I suppose it would be OK. Or if you have low expectations - enjoy. But best burger in the area?? far from it I'm afraid. There are so many other places to eat in the area - won't be back to this one for sure! What a waste of time and money!

I had the Stella Moo, it was wonderful. Best burger I've had in a long time! Wonderful service, we got our burgers very fast. The place has a very nice view of the water and you can watch the pontoon boats come and go. It was an over all nice experience.

It's just brisket and fries. Why the thirty minute delay. Do I need something more you ask, no absolutely not....JUST MY FOOD !!!!

Just happened along the Flippin Cow tonight. Had a build your own burger. Nothing wrong at all with the meal, the food came quick and it was very good. However the service earned them another star. My server was friendly, brought refills without asking and made some good suggestions.

Small & quaint restaurant. Good food & beer. Love the loaded tator tots. The Stella-Moo is all that and a bag of chips.

So I decided to give this place another shot because they changed their name. But unfortunately you can change the name but when the ownership is the same nothing actually changes. I wish I could give you a review on the food but unfortunately we never got our food. We ordered an appetizer of Potato things and 2 burgers. We waited 45 mins and never even got our appetizer! So we left and went to the other place on the lake. When we were leaving a waitress was standing at the door telling people it would be an hour and 20 min wait on food. They mainly just make burgers! At that point you need to just shut the doors for the day. Just ridiculous. So after 45 mins we left. I will not encourage a bad restaurant by giving them my money. And the sad part is everyone around had been waiting just as long or longer! I actually feel bad for the waitresses because they were nice and this was not their fault.

My father and I came up for the Notre Dame-Navy game (hooyah, GO NAVY!!!) and he and I were looking for something different and found out about this place. All I have to say is YUM! We each had a Flat Tire 22 oz beer, shared the jalapeño poppers, had the amazing Uncle Mac (Mac and cheese on a burger? YES PLEASE!!!!) and then finished it out with loaded tots! Great food, great atmosphere and great service! Big shout out to Joanie, she gave us great service. Great personality, and was always there checking on us! Will return in the future, as long as they are in business!

On lake Simonton w a dock for boats, a real local hangout. Great tater tots buried in bacon and cheese. So good we are going back for breakfast at 11 tomorrow before we head home.

The food here is only average. I was here last year and thought the burger was way overpriced so I hadn't been back until today. I didn't need a double so I built a single burger which was ok. Since one positive thing about this place is they have a few GOOD beers on tap, I had a couple of 3 Floyds Pride & Joy beers. Now I realize that all bars mark up the booze, but I had 2 - 12 oz beers and I was charged $10 for those 2 beers!!! I can buy a 6 pack of this beer for roughly $11 + tax, so lets call it $12. This is outrageous and the price gouging only slows interest in our local craft breweries or microbreweries. I won't be back unless the beer prices are more reasonable. Typically a beer at a brewpub is $4-$4.50 and you get a PINT (not 12oz.)

Heard so much about the burgers and was completely disappointed. I asked for medium rare, got medium well, toppings were not on that I asked for, and the service was ridiculously slow. I see no reason to go back.

Good burgers and the Stella moo is as good as they say. Really nice outdoor seating as well. Unfortunately service was really slow even on a later Sunday night.

I love burgers and am always looking for a good place to get one. Flippin' cow is a little out of my way, but was well worth it!!! You have the choice to select from one of their listed burgers or build your own. I have to admit I was impressed with the options on the build your own section. A large assortment of cheeses is always a plus, but they also have more than just standard bacon... the bun options are great as well. I chose to order the Stella Moo from their "fancy" list of burgers. My biggest regret was that I ate a late lunch so I could not finish this delicious burger. I highly recommend it. I am going to have a tough time the next time I go back because I will have to decide between having it again or trying something new. In case you are wondering, they have more than just burgers. My wife got a chicken sandwich that she tells me was great. The onion rings were pretty darn good as well. I enjoyed this place so much I have already told a group of guys at the office we will have to make it out there for lunch the next time we are all in town.

Went here for a Sunday dinner. Mojo are not how I remember them at shakeys they lack some seasoning and the bottom of the basket literally had grease flowing in it. Onion rings were very good and everybody enjoyed their burger. The cow chips weren't crispy like you would think chips would be and they lacked seasoning.

The burgers are awesome. Skip the fries though my first order came out cold and the second order wasn't much warmer and rubbery (not good). Good beer and nice atmosphere. The homemade cheese nugs are awesome also.

Good, not great. I like the concept, really good burgers and the fries are out of this world. I've been twice in the last two weeks. First time, I got the Stella Moo and fries, the wife got the wings. (she's weird) Anyway, the burger patties were much thinner than I expected. It's hard to get a juicy burger when it's so thin. The brisket was paper thin and didn't wow me. If I were to construct this burger, I would have gone with thicker beef and thicker brisket....this is an almost $10 burger and should be treated as such. This would have been a fantastic burger if it were a $6-7 dollar burger. Wings were pretty good for breaded wings. I went in with my son and stopped in for a burger and I ordered the patty melt, he got the hang-over. The Patty melt came out on Sourdough, not rye and the swiss wasn't even melted. That was a first with the sourdough for me. The waitress offered to take it back to re-melt the cheese, but I declined. The Hangover was reported to be pretty good, but not great. Again, for the money, one would expect a better burger experience.

The beers were impressive with Three Floyd's and Bells on tap but the burgers tasted like frozen beef which was disappointing. The tater tots were average. Ultimately I was disappointed as I had thought Cam had created a truly great burger joint but I can name two fast food burgers that are better. Why? Do it right and I'll happily return, as it is I will find a better option.

This makes the 3rd time I have been here. I can't say anything much good about the food on any occasion, but tonight was the last straw. I will never eat there again. At least not the burgers. Tonight I ordered I double bacon cheese burger with onion straws, lettuce and tomato and a side of their chips. It took 25 minutes for our food to come. Then my burger not only didn't have bacon but no cheese either. The waitress took it back to the kitchen and within minutes brought it back to our table. I open it up to put salt and pepper on it and I see that my lettuce is wilted and my tomato is actually hot. So I tell the waitress that they must have microwaved it and that I needed fresh lettuce and tomato. She takes it with my chips and says they are making a new one. I said I just wanted new veggies not to cook another because my family was almost finished with theirs. She said well the are making a new one and they don't use a microwave. I was thinking I really don't care I just want my food right. Then this burley looking female cook comes out from the kitchen with my food and with a cocky tone says we don't use a microwave. I was like really! Of course they didn't make me fresh chips to go along with it or an apology for the mix up. So I again open my burger and guess what no onion straws. Lol I said forget I will just eat it. Then while I'm eating it I started noticing some pink meat, so I cut it in half and it was raw in the center. I just gave up after that. When the waitress came back to our table I told her she could take it away she looked at the basket with 3/4s of the burger still there and didn't say a word just walked away as I ask for the check. When I gave her my card to pay I apologized for all the extra running I caused her and told her that was the 3rd time I've had issues with the food. Her comment was well we are trying to get our kitchen in order. Hmm the 1st time I was there was last summer, the 2nd in the fall and now this time. If they haven't got their kitchen in order yet they better give up. On the bright side they do have a decent selection of craft beers and the atmosphere is friendly and enjoyable. I like eating and being able to look out at the lake it's very relaxing, I would go there for the beer and view but never again for the food.

Great burgers, wether you want a "fancy burger" or the chance to build your own. If you're hungry, go for at least a double burger, and if you're thirsty, a full bar awaits.

So good! Took my 9 yr old son out for dinner and we loved it! He convinced me to come back and bring the whole fam. We now have a new favorite place! Try the Stella Moo burger with some tots! Service was friendly and quick and we all loved our food. They have 1.99 burgers on Weds and you can get a steak n tots on sun and mon for only 5.99!

I've been three times now and never had any more than adequate service. I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt for being victims of success but something has to be done. Tonight we waited two hours for steaks and burgers. It didn't help that the waitress walked by twice to clear off another table without taking our bills up. We eventually had to walk them up front for fear that we'd still be there waiting now. The food's good but the lengthy waits and poor service are going to make me think twice about continuing to eat here

So my family and I decided to try the Flippin' Cow because it was in contention for the area's best burger. It is local so we wanted to sample. Atmosphere is great since they are directly on Simonton Lake and have many of the locals stopping in for food or drink. It's mostly unchanged from when it was just a bar/ live music venue. We arrived a few minutes before they became busy, about 330-400 pm, so we had hoped our food would come out fast, hot, and delicious. However, we did get our drinks right away and after other guests arrived shortly after us, we were passed over by our server and guests who arrived after us ordered before us. So, finally we did order. We had onion rings as a appetizer that were very good.... delicious I would say! I had the burger that was advertized in the competition, The Stella Moo. It was dry, lacked seasoning, patties were small, toppings were scant, brisket could double as unseasoned beef jerky, and I went away disappointed. It is by no means the best burger in the area and I would say one of the worst. My wife had the Flippin' Melt. She did enjoy her sandwich but the patty was more substantial than mine but still lacked seasoning. My daughter had The Crunch and her patties were dry as well. My son had the Hangover and it in no way resembled the photo. We had to double check to see if the egg was on the burger and again the patties were dry. The fries were good and enjoyable. In all for a burger joint they don't make great burgers but the sides are wonderful and the atmosphere is enjoyable. I give it a three stars but it is forgettable. I will also add that for almost $10 I would have expected a more substantial burger. I don't see myself returning.

We went here by mistake but decided to eat here. The bar/family atmosphere was nice as we had the lake to view. I ordered a Double Bacon Cheeseburger. My wife and son ordered the Noogies (Chicken Nuggets). The burger was good but very small and had no seasoning. Also they forgot to add bacon. The Noogies were overcooked and so crunchy on the edges that my wife and son were breaking off pieces and not eating those pieces. The waitress was very friendly and removed the bacon from my bill.

I enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere. I had the blackened chicken sandwich on pretzel bread. The sandwich was above average. I would recommend this restaurant for a good lunch.
