Maybe I don't know what a hipster is, BUT this bar is not hipster. When I go it is flooded with regulars and friendly faces. Most the time they have a crowd ranging from students to older townies. Ive been going to this bar for YEARS and I've meet a ton of interesting/AMAZING people. It is a fun place to start the night but just as suitable for a night cap. Best patio in town. Nothing like drinking outside on a warm Indiana night, this is a place where memories are made. LOVE IT!

I really enjoy this place. It is cash only!!! Be forewarned. But, its SO cheap to drink I can totally see why. Scrape a couple quarters and you got yourself a buzz. Small venue means its hard to fit in winter. I love the patio in summer. Front porch is awesome when the sun is shining.

Total hipster bar. It is literally a house, but as a bar. You can play board games and there are always $1 PBR'S. I am not a hipster so the vibe is just alright for me. It is much better when I go there late night and am not as aware of my surroundings. However, the bartenders are cool. This is a great place and the pbr deal is great, but if you are not hipster, sometimes the locals look at you and just kind of smirk.

It's not for everyone, but definitely my favorite bar in town. The people are super chill and the bartenders are all extremely nice. I know a lot of people get a hipster vibe from this place but I don't get that at all - it's just chill and all sorts of clientele frequent it. Just don't go if you're looking to pick up chicks or dance on bartops, you know? House Bar is for friends.

What happens to writers between writings or after the writing is all done? What do they do? At least one writer saw a house in Bloomington, realized a project and created a House Bar. That's what this place feels like -- someone's personal endeavor, someone who's whimsical and engaging, who is just the person you hope to pull up a saddle next to at House bar. Tucked into the shadow of The Rail is the bright beaming light of House Bar. Bright because of the bartender's smile & attitude. We walked in around 7 or 8 on Valentine's night and there were some co-workers & a regular hanging around. At first I was a bit stand offish because it was such close quarters, but once we bellied up with $1 mugs of beer it quickly felt like my new friend has a stocked & awesome bar in his house & we were just hanging around. Now, I'm imagining this place gets slammed at night and can get stuffy. There are enough nooks and booths though to manage. They have a stocked bar, and it's not just a college fridge with random half drank bottles of Jack, Schlitz or Beefeater. They had Death's Door Gin, for one. They had Two Hearted on tap to balance the $1 PBR. But, really, I love great beer but I will never pass up $1 PBR on draft. Never. As bars in Bloomington, and any other large college town, most of the bars are enormous to accommodate the large crowds, which is good and well. I just want places like this instead -- as a student, a professor, a local or a guest. The bartender made me so happy that he alone is going to draw me back here.

In perfect contrast to The Rail, we have The House Bar. If The Rail is the high-class 30-something you pretend to be, The House Bar is the cheap and laid back 20-something you vaguely remember yourself being in college. $1 PBRs and $2 Upland Wheats. A blacklit bathroom, which shows you things you wish you didn't know were there. Picnic tables in the backyard. A great place to just chill with friends and throw a few back. Aw yeah, you really were carefree back then (not really but let's pretend).

For most of my stay in Bloomington, the Video Saloon was my go-to bar for relatively cheap pitchers of PBR, the occasional glass of whiskey, and billiards. I liked the ambience for the most part, so I was happy enough to keep going back. At some point, the house bar sprang up, and it was waaaay more in tune with what I was looking for out of a bar. It's not insanely loud, you can generally have a conversation without yelling, the beers are craaaaazy cheap (can't argue with PBR for a buck), and there are picnic tables out back. The name House Bar is perfectly fitting, because every time you go there it just ends up feeling like a really good house party. If the bartender is feeling nice, he might even change the tunes for you. If you're living in the area, you owe it to yourself to spend an evening there hunkered down with some friends and a few pitchers.

I can't believe there are no reviews for House Bar yet! As the name subtly suggests, House Bar is a bar in a house. It's quaint and homey, and there is a huge patio out back with a bunch of picnic tables that makes this my favorite drinking spot when the weather is nice. The drinks are hell of cheap, including $1 PBRs all the time! It's cash only but there is an ATM in the living room.

Literally a house turned into a bar, so the rooms are small and the place is usually packed. Like being at a house party with a full bar and more seats. As others have mentioned, it's a hipster/graduate crowd, but tolerable if you can find a place to sit. Definitely funny looks from the "baristas" drinking their pabst. The bar is immediately inside of the front door (which makes it a little hard to squeeze in, but the bar is the first place you want to go anyway, so it works). A little room to the right and a larger room (guessing the dining room) past the bar. Bar is something you would build at home and the stools are older. Great outdoor patio in back. Can get loud, but not too bad. More of a beer/shot place and as you can guess from the hispter crowd, pabst is the most popular drink. Better if going as a group rather than a couple since you will likely end up standing in a small circle. Stick around long enough to catch a memory of a moderated high school party. Probably 3.5 stars, could round down for the crowd, but rounded up for the originality.

I somehow always manage to have a great time when I come here, despite its skeezy bathroom and the fact that the jenga set is sadly incomplete. Why do I have such a great time? It's a good atmosphere. The drinks are dirt cheap. and it always feels like one of those great house parties where there aren't too many people, but not too few, with that one rowdy guy and a good mix of people.

My impression of the bathroom has improved. The walls are pretty dope. I'm just uncomfortable with the toilet mostly. It has that squat house presence. But it pretty much lives in one, soooo...

I frequent House Bar with regularity. I must begin this review by saying whether you like this place or not depends upon your expectations. It's a theme bar, and in this case the theme is that of a house party with a bar in it, near some train tracks. I recently discovered DJ night on Wednesday which is my new thing. I also know of several other music performances that have taken place. I especially like House Bar in the summer because there is a large outside 'back yard' area available to get some fresh air and congregate with one's peers. Oh and props to their recently decorated bathroom. Baller. It is a different type of bar that is really nice to visit for a change, especially when the weather is nice or you want to get board gamed out. My favorite thing is to play "giant Jenga'. Those huge Jenga pieces make me feel like I am so steady and in control, but in all reality I am a drunk adult playing with the giant version of a child's game. But whatever. Moving on.... Its proximity to The Rail is no doubt a plus, given the contrast of the two businesses. If you find yourself getting a little too drunkey at House Bar you can head up to The Rail to get some Tapas in you. Friendly bar tenders and I have almost always had good service. Excellent prices and good pours. The House Bar succeeds at filling its niche!
