One word comes to mind for the new kid in town-Impressive! The lines may be long, but the wait is well worth it, especially for a tasty bit from the small kitchen. Now every girl wants a Southern Gentleman, and after a single bite of a sandwich by the same name I would venture to say that every fellow should want to order one up too! The cheddar, pimiento blend pack quite the punch and the bacon has a sweet taste that perfectly offsets the spicy entree. My fellow diner took a bite and says he will be sure to order it upon return. It may be an hour and a half haul for me, but l will definitely be making a return visit!

A beautiful place that is spacious, yet welcoming. Great location. Decor is straight out of something you'd see in a modern magazine like Dwell. Great beer as well. Only negatives were no TVs (which is likely the owner's preference, which I can respect) and at this time, no growlers (small two barrel system that is working hard to keep up with in house demand). Very friendly, helpful, staff. Walk into the dining areas with a mix of modern wooden booths, lower eating tables, and high tables along the rails/walls. Beautiful light wood floor that is complimented by wooden table tops and black chairs/stools. Bar top is also a light wood with a small darker rail. Steel pipe foot rest. Bar back is very simple, just taps, mirrors, & one shelf for glasses. Bar is separated by the eating area by the same steel pipe railing. Food is above average, I would definitely recommend a hot/cold sandwich.

I got there right when they opened on a Saturday at 11 a.m. to meet my friend. When I walked in, I immediately noticed the nice woodwork on the tables and the general nice atmosphere of the place. However, when it was time to be seated, instead of asking us where we would like to sit, the waitress (who also served as the hostess) sat us at a table for two in the middle of the room. I thought this was rather bizarre since there was clearly better seating still available that offered more privacy and was right by the large front window. I asked for us to be moved to a table by the window instead and she moved us without any hassle. Both my friend and I each ordered the beer sampler which came with four samples for $5. I choose to taste the following (listed in order of preference): Hefeweizen, Single Hopped Pale (Magnum), Tangent (American IPA), and Rye IPA. I liked all of them with the Hefeweizen being my favorite. We also ordered the cheese plate to share, which was rather pricey but pretty large. I think this place is definitely worth checking out if you drink beer. I could see it also being a cute date place too if you are looking for some place to take a date.

I was traveling through Indiana and wanted a few beers and a good meal when I happened upon Function Brewing. I could not have been more impressed. From the moment I walked in I knew I had found a gem of a place. The service was prompt and excellent. The beers were super tasty. And the food was absolutely amazing! I love it when breweries have as high a standard for their food as they do their beers. I highly recommend this place. And just an FYI, they do not have televisions in order to promote conversation.

Every time I go to Function, there is at least one beer on tap that I haven't tried before, and I've been many times. It's hard to even pick my favorites - Array Spiced Rye, Rhombus Roggenbier, Amber, Belgian Pale - all amazing. Get the sampler, why don't you? Their food menu is made up of "fancy sandwiches". Lots of delicious vegan and vegetarian options. My favorite is The Farmer. I've also enjoyed the Jean Elizabeth and Ratatouille sandwiches, the cheese plate, and Goat in a Jam. The large windows overlooking 6th Street are nice, and I love the laid back atmosphere.

Wow wow wow! This place is something else! Hands down, Function Brewing has the best cole slaw I have ever tasted. I heard they make it with a French dressing base! On Sundays, a sandwich and a beer cost $13. Amazing! I love that they offer outdoor seating now, too, that it is nice weather.

Big fan of this place, mainly because it's quiet and quaint compared to a lot of the other places in Btown. The beer here is fantastic, seriously some major kudos to the master brewer! they have a rotating selection that is always tasty. The food here isn't bad either, I had the Soup of the Day with a salad $10. It was a purple potato soup with bacon and a balsamic truffle dressing spinach salad. Both were very solid and definitely satisfying. Haven't tried the sandwiches but they sound great. Solid brews and great food!

We actually planned on visiting a different brewery but when we went in it was warm, crowded and noisy on a Sunday evening. Not wanting to wait an hour, we decided to see what else was in town. I'm so glad we did! The owner was welcoming, the service (Taylor) was wonderful and it was a great experience! The food was good (what we saw coming out of the kitchen for others looked really good too!) and the beer was great! The ambiance was great, the sound level was comfortable (although I'm sure it gets louder when it gets busier) and the entire experience was just what we were hoping for! One of the nice things that we didn't find everywhere we went that you were allowed to choose the beers for your taster rather than having them pre-selected for you! It's a smaller operation and brewed on site. Absolutely will return the next time we're in the area!

Giving these guys a great review because first and foremost they brew all 9 beers that they have on tap. This includes two stouts, a porter, two IPAs, an amber, a nut brown, etc. They did a great job on the interior and provide a great atmosphere. They brew in their basement on site! They also have wine, sodas, apps, and hot and cold sandwiches. Tried the trio dips and they were awesome. I highly recommend it just for the sun dried tomato feta dip, incredible. Haven't tried the bleu cheese coleslaw yet but I'm going to soon. Also looking forward to trying the Southern Gentlemen sandwich. Lastly, location is prime, on 6th St right off of Walnut.

Fantastic food! I never expected such amazing food from a brewery. The El Jefe sandwich is amazing if you like spice, the blue cheese cole slaw is fantastic, like to die for fantastic! And the cheese and meat plate is really good and reasonably priced. The brews are really good and amazingly priced. The atmosphere is what you'd expect from a brew house, yet still can find your chill spots to hang with friends or your date. I'll definitely come back very very soon!

We visited on a Saturday. Staff was excellent. Very knowledgeable about the beer. This was the best beer I've had in a long time. The coffee vanilla milk stout was to die for. The periodic Amber was awesome and the rose curve ipa was excellent. All the beer was above average. The food was excellent. Great sandwiches. Our favorite brew pub that we tried in Bloomington. Will definitely go back. Just wish they did growler fills!

Spectacular! Best salad in Bloomington or basically in the world. Fantastic beer! And WOW 10 different brews?!!!!!!!!! The atmosphere is so great. I don't even mind paying the meters to go here. Thank you Bloomington needed you! A+++++

Ok, read the reviews and gotta say I walked away unimpressed. Service was marginal at best, we had to ask who our server was to get waited on. I stress this point the most, if you are going to take the order without writing it down, then get it right. Our order was incomplete, but we did charged for items we didn't receive. Stressed that our parking meter was out of time to waitress and we wanted to get out, but no sense of urgency. May try again and see if we just got a bad server but not anytime soon, too many good places uptown with better good and service.

  • Andrea L.

Ordered a milk stout, meat&cheese plate, and the Memory Lane (grilled cheese and tomato soup!). The atmosphere is perfect. Minimal/industrial loft feel. Menu offers selection without being overwhelming. Absolutely excellent execution on menu items!! The beer paired nicely with a number of my food items, which were orchestrated like a symphony in my mouth.

Food = ? Price = 3 Experience = 3 No Wifi Short Pours! Is it so hard to fill the glass? In a world full of good micro breweries... you have to do it better than this.

If you like sandwiches these are amazing perfectly assembled, perfect combination of flavors, Great cheeses, and good beer.

I've been looking forward to this for I dunno... a year at least! We arrived at 6pm on a Friday and there was plenty of seating. Keep in mind that this was the beginning of August so I imagine things get pretty busy once school starts. I got a flight and was able to sample a few other beers that others at the table ordered. I typically do not like IPA's but Function has definitely won me over! Their Tangent IPA was balanced with the hops not being overwhelming. LOVED the Acute Blonde. The Milk Stout had a smokiness for me (perhaps it was a function of the food and drink leading up to this one) but I still really enjoyed it! Duplicity really won me over as well. I LOVE LOVE LOVE my belgians! The food selection is really great and they are more than happy to work with you if you have preferences/allergies. A vegan was in the group and she had no trouble finding something. I had the Ratatouille sandwich and wow was it amazing. The big chunks of mozz combined with the basil pesto ... it had me at hello. Zach, by the way, was an awesome server. He was attentive and provided great suggestions and answered all our questions. He is very knowledgeable and quick to bring food/drink/refills.

This brewery is firing on all cylinders. Great beer, great food, great service and all at a fair price. I had the Southern Gentleman, which is a hot sandwich and the loved the taste. This was served with a Sweet & Tangy Blue Cheese Coleslaw. My wife had the Cheese Plate that contained 5 Artisan Cheeses and other goodies. This was also a winner. We were offered samples of beer so that we could narrow down the wide beer list to those that we wanted, we had the Acute Blonde and Duplicity Belgian Dubbel. Lets just say these were smooth and I only wish that I had taken my growler for a fill up. Thanks for a great ending to our Bloomington day out.

I've travelled to Bloomington a few times now, and each time I've tried to sample new spots to eat. This was my first time stoping at Function. The design of the brewpub is very welcoming--clean, simple, and open concept. Not uppity, but not dive-y either. I had a flight of beer, all of them good. I particularly enjoyed their milk stout. What really put Function over the top for me was their sandwich selection. A handful of them sounded awesome. I chose the Smokehouse and my god, was it tasty. I eat a lot of pub-grub and it was definitely in my top 15, maybe top 10 best sandwiches ever. The candied bacon and pickled jalapeños, in particular, were awesome. Now, I'm not feeling so eager to try new sandwich spots in Bloomington. I think I'd rather try out the rest of Function's sandwiches first...

Amazing coconut curry soup. Great atmosphere for being with friends and family. All five in our party said their food was amazing. Ratatouille, memory lane, salad, the coleslaw with blue cheese could be an entree. Highly recommend if you want delicious food and fantastic beer. Did I mention the acute blonde is worth a growler full.

Love the atmosphere. The food is also AMAZING. Really like the owners. They are very nice and greeted us at the door and helped us to find exactly what we wanted on the menu. I ordered a sandwich as a lettuce wrap and it was great. The best part was the Blue Cheese coleslaw. IT WAS AMAZING!!!! Best coleslaw I have ever had in my life!!!!

New cities, new time zones, a new couch every night. New countries, new states, new friends to be made and lost: new loves, new regrets, new longings. My last conference this semester: a town in the Midwest, a brewery I didn't even know existed. An open ceiling, brick walls, lights held in amber glass: f/x. Function Brewing, Bloomington, Indiana. No Tvs, no music, happy voices. The smiling brewer stands behind the bar. A pint of a well-balanced session IPA, light notes of citrus, an aftertaste almost of Jasmine. A pint of Tangent IPA: 67 IBU, 6.7% ABV, bitterness resembling a well-steeped cup of earl grey, an aroma almost of oregano. A pint of Rye Ale, bready, spicy, clean aftertaste. The menu features Smoking Goose Charcuterie, unique sandwiches, no fries: chips. Tonight, I feel like the "Mysterious Stranger", if I were here much longer, I would probably resemble the "Southern Gentleman". Folk roll in and roll out, I remain to read. The brewer said that he designed the brewery to be the place he would like to hang out with his buddies, I kind of want to be one of his buddies. He's made the perfect place for quiet people like me in a hard-drinking college town like Bloomington. I'm tired of traveling. This place could be home. Tonight, it is home. Tomorrow, I will be home. Just one more pint before I hit the road...

Function Brewing boasts the best beer I have ever had in Bloomington, and will keep me coming back. This is the first time I have had a sampler and been absolutely blown away by the flavor, complexity, and uniqueness of every single sip. If you want an illuminating microbrewery experience, try the Tangent IPA, the Permutation IPA, the Toasted Rye, and the Array Rye. I can't wait until bottling and growler fills begin, but until then, I'm not drinking anywhere else.

Visited Function Brewing while visiting my family in Bloomington, and I brought along my boyfriend, a brewmaster at another craft brewery. We liked every beer we sampled, and all of it was fantastic! Their recipes are creative and well-executed. My favorite was the Cherry Ratio Golden Ale, and my boyfriend really loved the sage flavor in the Composite Scottish Ale with Sage. He talked for a while with Steve the owner/brewer, and he really knows his stuff and is passionate about making great beer. They also serve food in their beautiful taproom. Next time we'll come for a meal and sit down for some food.

I like the space - open and simple. Great location right off the square. We were seated right away. I came in and tried all the beers in a tasting with a larger group on a Wednesday. Beers are good although I think I prefer the beer at Lennies. Sandwiches are pretty average. It's hard to compete with Feast who has unreal ones. I would go back for beer but not for food.

  • Kathleen C.

FUNCTION MAKES GREAT BEER. I was so impressed, especially because they make more than one IPA, and all are delicious. I don't love the atmosphere (though it is beautiful inside with the exposed brick walls), but that's a personal thing, and some may like this set up better. It's mostly tables/sit down and kinda divided up, and I like to be able to people watch and feel like a place is "crowded", if that makes sense.

We just happened to look this place up and were pleasantly surprised. Had a flight to start, every beer was delicious. You must try the Algorithm Oatmeal Brown or the most delicious Postulate IPA. Great food too, nothing fancy but delicious. Reasonable prices. P.S. Went back and tried the Beer Milkshake, vanilla ice cream with their coffee vanilla stout, which was very good.

I stopped by this place today for lunch after learning of the opening...which I had been anticipating. The food and drinks are really affordably priced. I started with a sampler of four beers; which were all really tasty. I had the cheese and charcuterie...nice selection, great flavors, fig-onion jam and curried cashews are awesome too. This place offers a great craft beer selection in a cool atmosphere. I look forward to retuning!

Blargh..... I realllly want to like this place, but I am unable. While the beers were good, nothing was exceptional except the Belgian, which was terrific . The food and atmosphere was everything that is bland in the world. I mean they have done a great job and it has a ton of potential, but it just has no identify. This is the kind of place that Aldous Huxley tried to warn us about. It is so average and mediocre that I felt almost empty, like the automatons that would probably enjoy a place like this. Really, it is clean and put together well, and there really is nothing 'bad' about it, except for the fact that is was soo underwhelming and plain that I felt a slight macabre vibe underneath the fresh paint. The space was used all wrong. It was like the kid that tries really hard and gets a participation award and then almost gets left behind by the bus because people forgot about him. I never write to give a 3 star review, but I was so moved to in this case. The food was prepared well, but again, it was good, but beyond forgettable. We literally sat there considering what restaurant we'd go to next to eat, yet continued to nibble because well it wasn't bad. I wish it would have been terrible or burnt or something, anything....any added character to any aspect of this place would have been a bonus. We left completely unsatisfied. This place will do well, though, I don't doubt that. Oh, and they don't have TV's which I usually really enjoy about a bar/restaurant.... But, they didn't have any music either which really added to the confusion of the space.

Wow! After waiting for two years I'm so glad it's finally open! I tried a flight of beers and enjoyed them all (nut brown, amber, smoked porter, belgian ale). The smoked porter and belgian ale were my favorite. The food was good, I had the "veganopoloy" and shared the "dip trio" Very tasty! They also note on the menu that you can make some vegetarian and vegan substitutions.

This place is awesome! Food was tasty and beer was equally satisfying! Favorite was the Peter Pepper Sandwich (perfectly spicy!) and Pale ale. Will definitely be back!

Great beer. Food was superb! The roasted tomato soup was like summer in a bowl. We also had an amazing sweet potato poblano chili soup. We loved the Dip Trio and I loved my sandwich with turkey bacon pesto cheese and a sundried tomato spread. Really delicious all around. And the atmosphere was pretty hip.

The beer, the food, the atmosphere. Function Brewing has these down to a science when creating the all around experience. I tried their Bernoulli saison and the coffee milk stout and found both to be an exceptional experience. Start with the charcuterie and cheese, you won't regret it. The mysterious stranger sandwich I hope and expect to be a year round staple as my go-to entree. The sever was energetic and very helpful when questioned about the various menu items. This place is worth more than the maximum five star rating.

Had a real blast here on a Sunday. Quality place, fun environment. The beers were brewed in-house and absolutely delicious. I'm not much of a drinker (wink) but I had to try 2 or 3. Food was absolutely delicious as well, and I got some Sunday deal where a sandwich and a TALL beer was like $12. Try it!!!

Love this place! Their beer is way better than Upland, and their sandwiches trump Feast. This place is about enjoying the people round you and the victuals, not being distracted by TV and your addiction to wifi. The service is also fantastic. Us IU library/info science students held a private event here, and it went very smoothly. Couldn't have asked for better.

Even though our waitress forgot about us, the manager made up for it by paying for our beer. The food was really good and so was the beer! Plus it wasn't overly crowded on a Friday night even though the IU students were in town.

Love this place! Tried their beer at the brewfest and finally tried their food! Excellent!!!! I had the Peter Piper and the wife had the Southern Gentleman! Both well worth it! Don't know if I will try something new or try to pick between these two next time! Definitely will reccomend to others!!!

Great and unique food!! Incredible beer that's always changing on tap. The atmosphere is great for socializing without all the big screen tv's. Service goes above and beyond...better than most you'll find in this area, even at top notch restaurants. Plus what's not to love about a locally owned mom and pop micro brewery. Keep rocking it Steve and Arlyn!

The food here is truly excellent. They do really impressive sandwiches with high quality ingredients. The place should expand their hours though--only so that I can visit more though! Definitely check it out.

My boyfriend and I wanted to go to dinner downtown at a different restaurant and we ended up parking in front of Function Brewing. He said "Let's try this!" The first thing I noticed was the wood floors. I am a sucker for wood flooring and theirs is gorgeous. The whole atmosphere is great and I was really happy we chose this place to eat. The waitress was more than helpful and so sweet and funny, Kelli was her name, I believe. We ordered the meat and cheese plate and I LOVED it! I ordered the Members Only and it was fantastic. I am not a beer drinker, but my boyfriend ordered one and really liked it. I will be visiting here much more often!

A group of us checked out Function Brewing on opening week. It was obvious as we walked in that they were understaffed and unprepared to deal with a rush of people. We waited patiently and were finally seated (in two different groups). It took a long time for our server to come over, but the guy who was at the front, who I believe was the bar tender or the brewer maybe?, came over and got our drinks and even gave us a taster selection on the house because of the slow service and splitting our party. As the menu states, the food does come out slow because everything is hand crafted. Don't get me wrong, the food was good (we tried the soup and a couple different sandwiches), but it seems like it was REALLY slow. How long does it take to make a sandwich? Seems like a lot more prep work could be down in the kitchen to speed up the wait time, but they might work that out better with a larger staff and more time.

Try it!!!

This is the brewery Bloomington was waiting for, without Tvs, with the best crafted beers in town. I had a great time.
