Pho 36 Menu

Sorry, We are updating this restaurant menu details.

For a long time Indy was lacking a "complete" pho restaurant, and now they have one. You don't have to drive very far from 465, or into a sketchy neighborhood, to find this bright, clean, simple place; it's in boring but safe Avon just past several rows of corporate box stores and across from a Walmart. Don't be deterred by the middle aged white guy at the counter who runs the place; he speaks fluent Vietnamese, and the restaurant has all the little touches of an authentic big-city pho joint you'd find in Seattle, Minneapolis, or other great pho towns. In addition to great pho tai (available in two sizes) you can get the vietnamese beef stew, vermicelli bowls, delicious bahn mi sandwiches, and bahn choux (cream puff pastries). The prices are very reasonable (5.99/7.99 for small/large pho). I have found with almost every Indy pho restaurant up until now, even the better ones, that there is always one or two significant details lacking that take away from the experience. Not here. Everything is spot-on, down to the sauce ramekins delivered with the soup, and the right amount of fish sauce in the pickling brine used for the veggies on the bahn mi. Well worth the excursion to Avon from wherever you live in the greater Indy area.

Love this place, The Pho was the bomb, I am now addicted. I also had the Grilled Pork Banh Mi. Their sandwiches are also very good. This place has become a regular for me. I can't seem to go too long without craving it.

Was pleasantly amazed at how well my whole family liked their meals. My Pho was delicious and the variations I could add to it made it even better. My mother was able to get one of their sweet dumplings filled with meat that is not on the regular menu, but they carry them when they have special catering orders. My husband enjoyed his food and my 3 year old had his own "soup" that he loved. Can't wait to go back. The owner was extremely friendly and helpful to us as we know nothing about Vietnamese food!

Food: 5+ Service: 5 Atmosphere: 3 Value: 4 The Springrolls here are unbeatable and frequently used as an excuse for Pablo and Panda to make the hour drive to Avon from Bloomington. When Pablo was in Spain for 4 months and flew in to see Panda, our romantic weekend together began with Springrolls awaiting him at the terminal (how sweet, I know!). Pho 36 is beautifully unconventional in many ways: It is in a tiny strip mall run by a white guy who occasionally likes to show off by yelling Vietnamese orders to the back for all to hear=p. The space is very small but clean and presentable- nothing special about the decor. However, the owner-operator is witty, fun and personable. People will walk in and he knows exactly what they want and joke around with them while they are waiting for their food. Food: we have been known to order more orders of Springrolls than we can carry out the door in one trip, and we always eat them all. We will leave the rest of the food reviews for the other 35 (making us #36 for Pho 36 ;) score!)

I've been here many many times, but have neglected to write a review. I've eaten in the restaurant and I've had take-out. The owner is incredibly helpful and attentive. With my most recent visit I noticed that they have hired a server. She was nice enough, but doesn't know the menu and was somewhat flaky. I will let that go though. She is new and the owner was double checking and ensuring everything was enjoyable. The Pho is phenomenal. I've had it a couple other places and by far this was the best of the bunch. I personally like the chicken pho, but have had the meatball and the beef brisket. The broth is so flavorful. If you are going for the first time, get the Pho. Their Bahn mi sandwiches are also very good. The owner recommended getting one as a appetizer to share. Yes please! As previous reviewers have stated, the spring rolls and egg appetizer are also really fresh and delicious.

Came back for #22. Soo good. The sauce was great. Got the noodles stir fried. Next time, the pork chop!!

Was a little bit skeptical at first because pho in Avon just sounds scary but this place is a little piece of Asian paradise in suburbia. The spring rolls are so fresh and delicious not to mention the pho is amazing. I think it might be better than my favorite pho place in West Lafayette on Purdue's Campus. Oh! And the boba tea is to die for

Overall great food but DO NOT ORDER THE BUBBLE TEA! There are not many places to order bubble tea in Hendricks county (Ru Yi had delicious bubble tea until they closed a while back) and Pho 36 has some of the worst. I was so disappointed when I tasted the taro boba tea, the tapioca pearls were hard and tough, so don't waste your money on it. As for the food, it was terrific! I liked that it is actually AUTHENTIC Vietnamese cuisine, prepared and cooked by Vietnamese employees. I enjoyed the bahn mi sandwich, pho, and of course the spring rolls. The appearance of the restaurant is very clean, wish there was more dine in space, especially when it gets very busy in there.

Expertly crafted Vietnamese. The Bun was crunchy with fresh vegetables, tangy with the fish sauce and the pork patties lightly seasoned with 5 spice barbecue. Dessert is even offered and the corn pudding with coconut cream sauce and freshly toasted sesame seeds was a sweet treat. The location is a hole in the wall of a strip mall, but well worth the trip. I will be back with friends for sure.

We happened to find this wonderful restaurant via Yelp, and decided to try it out. We were NOT disappointed!!! Almost all the reviews recommended the spring rolls, so we ordered them in shrimp and beef. We also went for the standard beef pho, and a bahn mi sandwich. Everything was beautiful in taste and presentation, the owner was very pleasant and funny. The restaurant was clean. We have literally nothing negative to say! I just wish they would relocate to Bloomington where we live!!!!! :-)

My favorite place to eat in the Indianapolis area. There is lots of good vegetarian food, but my favorites are the Vegetarian Eggroll Vermicelli and the Lemongrass Tofu Sandwich. They are both very satisfying, refreshing and delicious. Pho 36 is owned and operated by a local couple. He runs the front of the restaurant giving excellent and witty service. He usually knows what I want when he comes up to the table as I eat there at least once a week, sometimes more. It is a small restaurant located in a strip mall, very clean and busy, and the service is outstanding. The bun for the sandwiches is excellent. They also have excellent desserts. I especially recommend the corn pudding or the fried bananas because the coconut cream sauce is so very good. When you get food to take out, everything for the Pho or a salad is packaged separately so as to keep it fresh. Another nice aspect of this place is that there is no TV. You wouldn't expect to find such a unique and amazing restaurant in Avon, but make the drive! It's worth the trip!

Oddly the same Vietnamese song was played over and over and over during our recent visit at Pho 36. But, that did nothing to mar our dining experience. This place is wonderful. The service is good and their pho and banh mi and spring rolls are great. The Vietnamese chicken wings are delicious but really sticky & messy. And sticky. And, the prices are incredibly reasonable. Huge bowls of Pho for $7.99 and large banh mi sandwiches for $3.50. Dang.

This place might be small and tucked into a small strip mall, but it's got great customer service and food so far. The guy that has always been working there is always nice about answering questions regarding the cuisine here. My husband knew he loved Vietnamese food, I however assume it would be full of fish based dishes or stuff a picky water wouldn't like. I could not have been more wrong! oh how I love the pho soup here with beef. I like that with the mint and hot sauce so that I can taylor my flavor. The sweetened iced coffee is yummy and so are the fried bananas! My mom and my husband love those fresh spring rolls. They smelled amazing! But I don't eat cold food, so that is only second hand! But she said they were the best she's eaten in Indiana ever! We finally got to try one of the dumplings that are normally special order only, it was so savory and tasty! If you are ever there and see them, try them! If you aren't sure you will like something ask what is in it! They are more than helpful.

This place is great! I've had the Pho a few times & the Bánh mì. Both are fantastic. I've had some great egg rolls in my life, but these are definitely the best. Authentic, fresh, & tasty. What more could you ask for?

  • Tomas C.

Solid Vietnamese cafe style restaurant. No bells and whistles. Nice spring rolls, but the beef in the Pho was nothing to crow about. Probably better earlier I'm lunch rush. Generally a great addition to the area, ESP since the demise of green leaf.

The owner (? white guy behind counter) was really nice. The bubble tea, however, was not. The bubbles were undercooked and flavorless. He did not ask if I wanted mine blended or over ice and I just assumed it would be over ice. It was not. It was poorly crushed ice (think chunks big enough to clog the massive straw mixed with pellets from an artificial snow machine) blenderized with grainy sugar, over hard tapioca balls. I had a huge craving for bubble tea and this place left me feeling unfulfilled. I do NOT recommend it for bubble tea, but based on the cleanliness, kind owner, and happy expressions of all the people eating there, I will be back to try the food. The tea was almost $5, so I felt it was overpriced too.

Amazing food! Every time we go we try something different and have difficulty choosing a favorite. You MUST try the coffee made with condensed milk. You will be addicted. Our four year old son loves the fried rice and he's a typical picky eater.

Have been here several times - lunch and dinner. With my 2 and 4 year old and without. This place is super. Kids love it too. It's small and gets crowded but it won't keep me away. DO NOT leave here without getting the fried egg appetizer - don't read it just order it and immerse your taste buds in joy. I also love the beef vermicelli. So yummy. My 4 yo loves the pork vermicelli - perfect kid portions too. Btw, the owner is super nice and takes pride in what they serve. That ranks high on my list of cool things about the places I eat.

  • Binnan O.

Came here again and was surprised to find that they had fixed their broth! It was significantly beefier and not covered up with pepper, giving it a much simpler and savory flavor. I also ordered the vermicelli bowl with egg roll and pork (bun cha goi thit nuong) and it was delicious! A pretty good blend of noodles, lettuce, cucumbers, and a good portion of meat drenched in slightly sweet and tangy fish sauce. This place just gets better and better!

I was hesitant to try new food but the waiter suggested I try their #10 which is the rare beef soup. It is amazing and probably the best soup I've ever had. Their spring rolls are great too. I highly recommend Pho 36.

Eaten at Pho36 at least half a dozen times by now. Great to have something other than crappy Chinese food in the western suburbs of Indy. All of the food I have eaten here has been flavorful, fresh and more than enough to fill me up and keep me full. The service is great and the employees are very friendly. My only complaint (and it is not enough to know a star off the rating) is the business hours. I would like it if they were open later and on Sundays. Overall, great place with great service, food and value.

I'm going to post a review from a kind of different viewpoint -- that of a person who isn't at all familiar with Vietnamese food. But being far from timid, I gave it a try and I'm glad I did. When I walked in the door, I told the owner, "I'm a Vietnamese food virgin. Guide me." He very helpfully talked me through the entire menu, explained everything. The spring rolls were a fresh and refreshing surprise -- until now, the words" spring roll" coincided with "deep fried." The Pho was incredible. The owner explained how to customize it with all the various additions, and it was just unbelievably good. This is one of those dishes like fried rice that even a newbie can thoroughly enjoy, that looks deceptively simple but that I can imagine is horribly tricky to make RIGHT. The broth is just exquisite. The owner was wonderfully helpful and able to answer such moronic newbie questions as whether to bite the noodles or slurp them, and whether to eat the basil sprigs or leave them. He managed to do so without making me feel like an idiot. If you're going to get both a bowl of Pho and an appetizer, bring a friend. A very *hungry* friend. Because I've got a really hearty appetite, and I got through about half my bowl of Pho. Now, bear in mind that I can't compare good Vietnamese food knowledgeably. However, I can speak to fresh, delicious, well-prepared and well-served food versus half-ass, unenthusiastic, mediocre food, and Pho 36 was most definitely the former, not the latter. In other matters, let me throw out kudos for a couple of things you don't often find in reviews. The bathroom was immaculate. The entire restaurant was clean and neat. And the iced tea was brewed and *delicious.* Westsiders and newcomers to Vietnamese food rejoice. This is the place for you. Go forth and eat!

For an all around great Vietnamese food experience, Pho 36 is hands down the best! However for the best Pho in town, it's Eggroll #1 on 465/Emerson. The owner is very friendly, and they serve authentic Viet dishes. My only critique about their food is with their Pho and bubble tea. Broth needs more of that meat/bone flavor and definitely need beef tendon and tripe! The bubble tea would be spot on if it was more smoother. The blender they use does not blend ice well, therefore you will get little chunks of ice. OK, so here is my biggest peeve with this place. I have been there not once, but TWICE where they were closed on a NON HOLIDAY Friday. I live 40 minutes away and we will drive for good food! It's such an inconvenience to get there and find that they are closed. In my opinion, this place needs to find the help or staff that can run the place so they are OPEN! No restaurant should operate like this! I've been to many smaller and family owned restaurants in town, and NEVER have they been closed. It should not be the NORM to call a restaurant to see if they will be open on a Friday night.

The food was fantastic and the prices were amazing! I got the shrimp curry and my husband had one of the phos. The egg roll appetizer was nothing special, but good. The service was great as well.

  • Kathryn W.

Pho was ok. I would have liked the spring rolls to have been stuffed with more veggies and/or shrimp, less rice noodle. Condiments were disappointing: salt, pepper, two squeeze bottles (hoisin & hot sauce?), sugar. I expected fish sauce, soy sauce, two or three hot sauces, and more. Bubble tea even more disappointing. Tapioca balls were seriously undercooked, crunchy in the center. If you can't drive to a more "authentic" Vietnamese restaurant, several of which are clustered near 38th & Lafayette, this might be fine, and certainly you can get a decent meal for $10-15 (not including beverage).

It may look simple but it's amazing. From the minute I walked in the door with my two sons the owner was joking with us and explaining the menu. This was the first time any of us had eaten Vietnamese food and it won't be the last. We loved everything including bubble tea. Stop being midwestern and go eat some vietnamese in Avon, IN.

Great place for lunch, the atmosphere is definitely lunch friendly and the food and prices are great. I've had the Pho on several occasions and have never been disappointed. Make sure to try the spring rolls!

We were in town visiting from California and were on our way to Thai Lana but found it's odd hours left us standing outside. Still in the mood for Asian food we walked a couple store fronts down to Pho 36 and we couldn't be happier. Good bubble tea and vermicelli, tasty spring rolls. Great prompt service. Go here.

I'm going to keep this short and sweet, well I'll try! 1. Must try the spring rolls 2. The Vietnamese wings...oh my! Best thing I've eaten in awhile 3. Pho was delish, so simple but the flavors are amazing 4. Vietnamese crispy noodles with shrimp squid and chicken, flavor town! 4. Fried bananas in a coconut cream sauce...sweet and smooth 5. The coconut Boba Tea, I've never had anything like it...love it! Ok I realize this sounds like a lot of food, it was! My hubby and I split it and brought home a ton of leftovers! We had not eaten Vietnamese food before, not sure why! I am sooo happy that we tried this tonight, we LOVED THE PLACE! The owner works his but off, what a great over all experience.

  • Robert Y.

The egg rolls and spring rolls are delicious. The pho is a 7 out of 10. The flavor needs a little more ump. The brisket and other meats average. Their bubble teas are good but not the best around town.

In short, the atmosphere doesn't do the food justice. But for a quick meal or takeout, it's wonderful. Cons: 1. Ambiance: There is none. The tiny dining room, fluorescent lights and blaring music that sounded like a cat being strangled in another language made for an uncomfortable dining experience. I was VERY disappointed as I prefer an intimate setting when dining out. Perhaps I was expecting too much. 2. Menu: The menu is a massively long list (numbered) of dishes with no descriptions whatsoever. There are tiny, grainy photos of food that made me want to leave immediately, and aren't matched to any particular menu item. It felt a bit like a Denny's menu with all the good parts removed. If you are not familiar with southeast Asian food you may find it all overwhelming. I asked the waiter (and later found owner) for a recommendation and instead was given a description of the menu layout. I can read. I get that the noodle dishes are all here. I don't know what's in that dish or how it is prepared... Needless to say I found the menu frustrating. The lack on ingredients is also frustrating for those with food allergies and intolerance. The menu doesn't indicate that the bubble tea contains milk. I find that milk isn't a typical Asian ingredient so didn't think to ask. It led to a very uncomfortable night. 3. Location: It's so difficult to find, but it's right next to Rumor's and across the street from Wal-mart, and in a place where making a left into their parking lot is not possible, so you can only make a right when coming in from the direction of Danville. 4. Hours: They aren't open on Sundays. This is highly frustrating to those of us who like to eat all seven days of the week. Pros: 1. And this is a big one. The Food. The pho was amazing. The broth was fresh and crisp. The ingredients were obviously fresh and everything was absolutely delicious. I nearly ordered more to go for a snack later that night. We also had the spring rolls, jasmine iced tea and bubble tea. EVERYTHING WAS SO GOOD I DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE. It's also amazing how filling one little bowl of soup can be. 2. The staff. I only spoke with the waiter/owner but he was friendly, warm, and a bit snarky in an inoffensive way. 3. Prices: At first I thought 6.99 was very expensive for a bowl of soup. After seeing it though, it's a complete meal and I'm sure adding a sandwich would make a fine dinner... If only I knew what was on the sandwiches... ;) Post Script: I checked my pocket and found the takeout menu for Pho 36. Lo and behold, descriptions of the menu items. If you are eating in, leave the table menus and go for the takeout menus near the register.

It was suggested that I try this place for the Bahn Mi. What a great suggestion. The rolls are made to the owners specs at a local bakery and this is the only place you can get them. Once you have this roll, all others will pale in comparison. Great flavor, texture and structure. The meats and veggies were great too, I had the roast pork.

It is not the only the best Vietnamese in Indy, but the BEST RESTAURANT in AVON by far. The vegetables are always crisp and fresh. The store is immaculate. Their spring rolls and Pho (soup) are as good as it gets.

My boyfriend and I went to this restaurant when it had just opened. As someone from Hawaii with parents who were born and raised in Vietnam, I wasn't expecting much. However, I was proven wrong on many levels, and we have consistently gone back again and again for the good service and great food. Now on to the food reviews. I'm going to say right of the back that the pho is not worth driving to Avon for. The soup is surprisingly thin and rather flavorless, other than a slight overwhelming peppery taste, which does not accurately describe a good bowl of pho. I do not believe they use a traditional pho recipe, which is disappointing. This is the only reason this restaurant did not get 5 stars. For a place named after this dish, I expected it to be the star. However, the food gets much better after that. I can't turn down the appetizer, goi cuon, or the spring rolls. I would advise the shrimp and pork ones with a yummy hoisin/peanut dipping sauce. I could never admit this to my mom, but these rolls might best hers! All the other appetizers were also spot on for me. As far as entrees go, the cha gio (egg rolls) and vermicelli noodles is an amazing dish to try. The pork chops are also really good, as it is marinated in a phenomenal sauce. The bahn mi sandwiches are not as great as I'd like, but it's hard to be picky in Indiana. Overall, there is yet a dish (besides the pho) that I have tried that has disappointed me.

The restaurant is very neat and clean. The owner is cordial and service very good. The pho was excellent and if you have a sweet tooth, you must definitely try the fried bananas in coconut sauce. I would recommend to anyone who enjoys Vietnamese cuisine.

After my first lunch this week, I am a big fan. The only drawback for me is having to trek out to Avon to enjoy it. The service was attentive and playful without being intrusive. Loved the rice cakes with egg and the rice noodle dishes. It's the kind of place I would visit at least weekly of it were down the street. I was not as excited about my boba tea in the smoothie form. The default is usually over ice, so hadn't thought to specify. Looking forward to trying sandwiches next time. Until they can open a location downtown, this menu would easily be accommodated by a food truck!

I go to Pho 36 when I'm feeling drained and depleted. I order a large bowl of Pho, and I come out feeling slightly better about life. As others have mentioned, the owner is incredibly friendly, and the service has generally been quite good. Expect a longer wait during lunch rush, since the owner has to do quite a bit of multitasking. The spring rolls and the fried rice cakes are fantastic. The boba tea is a little bit expensive for what it is (the norm, I guess, for a somewhat gimmicky drink) -- I recommend getting it simply over ice instead of the default "smoothie" style.

  • Stephanie R.

I've been here twice now and the owner is very nice!!! It's a small family owned place. The food is good, the service is GREAT!!! The pho is not as awesome as it could be, but for Avon, it's fantastic. They use hu tieu broth, not pho broth. The sandwhiches are great. The grilled pork chop had a little too much five spice - type seasoning on it. We have not tried the bubble tea yet, but that's next. Overall definitely a good addition to Avon's 'restaurant strip'.

Decided to check this restaurant out for lunch last week. The space is fairly small but nice and clean. The menu is smaller than what you normally see at a Vietnamese restaurant, but I don't mind that if it means the dishes are better. I asked what was good and decided on the grilled pork chop and egg and egg rolls. I also asked if I could get a small cup of broth to get an idea of how their pho might be. When the food came out I was instructed to put the fried egg on top of the rice and to pour sauce over that and the pork chop. The egg breaks and mixes with the sauce to add flavor to the dish. I was very impressed by the food. It came out quickly and had a lot of flavor. The egg rolls were packed with taste. The broth was yummy. Could taste the pepper and cinnamon infused in it. The pork chop had a nice char to it. Check it out.

Went to pho36 for the first time this evening. The pho was excellent and my companions enjoyed their vermicelli and sub. The egg rolls are excellent and the banana desert is a must. The owners are super nice and double as servers and cooks. We will definitely be making this a regular stop for us

I love this place! Although the pho was a bit watery, everything else is top notch! I'm completely addicted to the fried rice cakes with egg, and the banana coconut dessert is to die for. Service is super nice, and you can get a Vietnamese sub for $3.50. You just can't beat the place for price and convenience.

After hearing many good things about this place I was expecting some pretty stellar food. And, ya know what... I got it! I was a pho virgin before coming here, and that helped make the experience all the better. They have an extensive menu with lots of pho choices and plenty of other choices to keep the whole group happy. We started off with their spring roll appetizer - the rolls were beautiful and absolutely delicious! Heck, I'd come back just for those again. Then the pho itself. Oh my. So freakin' good. Plus, since I got the large size, I had plenty left for another meal later! Sure, the place is really small and nothing fancy, but our delicious dinner made up for anything lacking in atmosphere. Plus we were having a great conversation with some friends, so who needs fancy surroundings anyway? Moral of the story? I should have tried pho long ago. And I also should have gone to Pho 36 much sooner too. Don't make the same mistakes I made - check this place out and get yourself some pho!

This place really doesn't look like much. When I walked in, I was incredibly skeptical. A friend of mine had recommended it though so I decided to give it a try. I got the standard bahn mi with the liver spread. The meat was rich and earthy. The vegetables were bright and crunchy. It has the perfect combination of sweet and heat from the slaw. The bread was light and airy with a crispy exterior. It's a small sandwich but for $3.99 is a great deal. I refuse to go to a place with pho in the name and not try their pho. It just wouldn't make sense. I got the roast beef pho. The bowl is huge! It comes with a plate of aromatic herbs and veggies that you can add at your leisure. The broth smells like heaven. It's bright and herbaceous with just a bit of earthy spice. It tastes great with a lot of Asian spices. The beef is nice and tender. It took a while to learn how to eat soup with chop sticks but once you do it's pretty great. Am

The service here was awesome. The guy running the place was super nice. I LOVED THEIR SWEET CORN PUDDING. Please get this. It is sweet corn with tapioca and coconut cream. It's to die for. The pho and chicken pho broth were too sweet for my personal preference. I don't know if they use MSG because I didn't feel the effects after. The egg rolls were good too. But definitely get a Bahn Mi sandwich!!! Holy moly... These were so good!!!

I think I have had this place bookmarked since I moved to Indy..never got around to checking this place out until a couple of my friends and I met the owners. All the dishes made here are their own family recipes. It was pretty packed at 2pm on a Saturday, but we only had to wait 5 minutes for a table to open up. It's a really small space, but clean and I'm always a fan of loud restaurants. We did have a little wait on getting our orders in; the co-owner/hubby of chef seems to be the only server. My girl friend and I ordered spring rolls, Vietnamese chicken wings (for her 6 year old), Pho tái and Pho tái chin (when we got our bowls we couldn't tell the difference...). The 6 year old really enjoyed the chicken and was pretty proud of eating everything off the bone. My Pho tái was very tasty and I'm so pleased at the super large portions. Nothing like a hot bowl of ph on a cold day! We finished our meal with bubble tea; it's not the best bubble tea I've ever had, and I certainly have never had it in slushy form, but it was still pretty good. I only wish it had more tapioca pearls. Overall I enjoyed the whole experience--and I will be back! I want to try a Vietnamese sandwich or a rice noodle bowl.

In the land of chain restaurants, Pho 36 is a hidden gem in Avon. We've been there many times, and have always had good food and even better service. I will return time and time again.

This was the first restaurant we went to while we were in Indianapolis, and it did not disappoint. We ordered Grilled Beef Spring Rolls and Pho Tai. The spring rolls were some of the AMAZING, and the fish sauce they came with had a little kick to it too. The Pho was good, but not the best we've had. The restaurant overall, clean and quaint. We will definitely come back here next time we are in the area.

Nice people ... Great food! Service was pleasant and they were consistent on checking in on us and making sure we were ok! Food was A++. I am a big fan of Vietnamese food... Grew up on it my whole life and can eat it every day!!! And this would be one place that I can eat at all the time!! The employees were kind and that alone will get me to come back alone!!!

Got a small pho dac biet ($7.49), and mango boba for $3.75. Blah. That's tough to drink, since it had too much sugar and overpowering amount of flavor. It's like drinking a slush medicine. Boba was soft and chewy though, which was good. Now to the pho. Noodles were just a bit stiff, not watery. They gave me a lot of cilantro and basil. Pho broth was light in taste. Meatballs were soft, and meat was lean and tasty. Overall, I say get the pho and skip the boba.

Absolutely fantastic meal! My friend and I came in for lunch and we were pleasantly surprised. I had a combination rice noodle dish and my friend had a chicken ban mi (not sure quite how to spell that). It was a really great healthy fill. Food came fast for us and we were checked on many times. We will definitely be back.

Since it has been a few years since I first reviewed Pho 36, I thought I would do an update. Pho 36 is now my FAVORITE location for pho in the Indianapolis area. It is a great restaurant that is locally owned and operated by a Great family. Pho 36 would be the perfect location for someone new to Vietnamese cuisine & pho to take their first "test drive" of the options. I also think this restaurant would be a good choice for someone new to any kind of "non-American" cuisine to try to broaden their palates to something different than burgers and chicken fingers. The owner will take his time to explain menu items, answer questions you have, make recommendations, and even offer suggestions on how to eat trickier/more complex items like pho (especially in the case of pho. My husband & I both learned how to eat pho by basically spying on other people in other restaurants or by watching Anthony Bourdain eat it on TV, lol. We would have loved a real in-person explanation when starting-out). When we are in there, I love hearing him take his time to explain items, even when the place is packed. He is the waiter, server, busboy & cashier simultaneously, WORKS HIS REAR OFF, and still takes the time to educate his customers & offer suggestions if needed. The owners are also great about recognizing their regular customers. Case in point, when we were in last evening, after a 2-3 month hiatus (sorry :-(), he brought 2 iced teas to our table without us even asking. He knows us. Speaking of their iced tea, it is jasmine tea that is unsweetened (sweeteners are available) and it is OUTSTANDING. I feel like I probably drink a gallon of it when we're in there, and sometimes I feel guilty about that, but it's delicious. Another perk about this restaurant, It. Is. CLEAN! The dining room is kept in great condition and from the peeks I have seen back into the kitchen from the dining area (through the door or window), and it looks impeccable compared to some other restaurants in town I have had Pho in... Some people might complain about slow service, but this is a truly family run business with a small crew who all have to multi-task to the extreme. We don't mind that it might be a while until we get our check on a busy weekend night...because we know the owner is off providing excellent customer service at another table and will get to us when he can, and it gives my husband & I a chance to slow-down & just enjoy being present. A few of our favorite dishes at Pho 36: *Appetizer- Fried Rice Cakes with Egg-- This is our favorite appetizer and it is what we tend to start our meal off with each time (I think the owner has it written down on the pad before we even open our mouths to order now...lol). The rice cakes are kind of the consistency of little dumplings, that have a lovely pan sear on them. They are then sauteed with eggs & green onions. Then topped with a lovely pickled carrot/daikon garnish & black pepper. It is then served with an amazing dipping sauce that is so yummy I could drink it with a straw...but no worries, I restrain myself. *Appetizer- Spring Rolls-- I'm not normally a fan of the soft/cold type of spring rolls, but I like them here. The couple times we have had them they have been freshly made & delicious. * The Pho--- They offer several variations of pho, with most of the variations being what type of meat is served in it. There's no mystery meat at this Pho Shop!! (some would be sad by the lack of mystery meat...but I like easily recognizable cuts of meat). I typically get the rare beef with meatballs. My husband normally gets a combo with brisket & rare beef (I think). I love to super-spice mine with the hot sauce, especially in the fall when my sinuses start rebelling. I am always impressed with the quality & quantity of the garnishes that are served here (typically includes cilantro, basil, bean sprouts, jalopeno & lime...and a heaping pile of it). *The Vermicelli- it's outstanding here, and they offer several varieties of this too. My personal preference is for the grilled pork with eggrolls option...because it is like getting your entree with a bonus appetizer surprise in it. I love the delicious complexity of their vermicelli sauce here. For those that aren't aware, the noodles in vermicelli are served cold. This was a shock to me the first time when I didn't know, but it's delicious. *I forget the name, but they have a "pork in a clay pot" dish that is Delicious. It's served to you in a clay pot, with tender, delicious slices of pork that are in a bubbling-it's-so-hot sauce that is delicious (but very salty, be sure to drink lots of that delicious tea, as mentioned above). It's served with a side of rice. You can get it with catfish too, but I can't attest to how that version is, since I don't eat catfish. *Boba Tea--it's ok here. It's served smoothie style & it fills a boba tea craving for me (why aren't there more boba tea places in Indy?!)

I'm picky with my pho.. .and I was moderately satisfied with this place. The options on the menu were plentiful and the environment was inviting. However, the broth did not have enough spice in my opinion.. I think they needed a bit more nutmeg and cinnamon and maybe cooking the broth for longer.. That aside, I thought the thai basil was fresh and abundant, the bean sprouts were also fresh and crunchy, and the raw beef was tasty =) I would probably return if I'm in the area, but I wouldn't go out of my way to go there.

My first Pho experience! I decided to give this place a try after driving past it for the last few months and always wondering. After initially embarrassing myself and ordering some Pho (Foe instead of Fuh), I received a plate with three egg rolls and dipping oil and a giant bowl of steaming Pho. I ordered the beef broth with round steak and beef brisket pieces. The giant bowl of Pho was accompanied by a plate of fresh veggies (basil, cilantro, jalapenos, lime wedge and bean sprouts) to add at my discretion Before digging in, I took a taste of just the broth. Amazing. I know this is going to sound silly, but it just tasted so complex, like a lot of time went into it. I started adding some of the herbs and veggies and a big squeeze of lime juice, then dug into the rice noodles. You can't be shy here, folks. You ARE going to slurp a lot and, if you're super unskilled with chopsticks like me, potentially get some broth on your shirt. It's totally worth it, though. Filling and delicious. Great first experience, will definitely be back.

Traveling through the midwest I thought I would checkout this Pho place based on its great reviews. I consider myself somewhat of a pho connessuer. This review is for the Pho Dac Biet. Overall I would give this bowl of pho a score of 5 out of 10 possible. Broth had decent flavor but did not last the duration of the meal. The noodles quickly absorbed the flavor. Noodles were too soft and absorbent. I prefer the noodles that do not continue to cook in the broth and get softer and absorb all the broth. Veggies were fresh and tasted good. Meat trimmings were ok. The flank had marbled cartilage which normally I like but this particular meat had an off flavor I didn't care for. Tripe was cooked just right. The meatballs were good flavor but too soft in texture. They should be very firm. There was NO tendon in my Dac Biet! Tendon is a MUST! Not sure why it was not offered in the dish. Lastly, the soup needs to be served HOT. No excuses. This was hot but not piping. Combine all these factors and you have a decent bowl of pho but not excellent. This is the only place within 15 miles of another pho place. Worth a try.

Best pho in indy. Once you get over the white guy taking orders. The man is a great host and extremely courteous. I will say I think many people have questioned his race before lol he took it in stride

I love this place! The beef pho (#10) is my go-to. The service is fast and friendly, and the food is fresh & delicious. I also recommend the fried rice cakes w/ egg (#5) as an appetizer or side item. Yum.

I'm a PHO-natic!! When it comes to PHO restaurants I've been to pho restaurants in NC, MI, PA, IL, KY, WI...all the way to HAWAII!! And I gotta give it to this place! The pho here always hits the spot! The Bahn mi also are worth it! Basically, we've never been disappointed with anything off their menu. Since we've moved to town this place has been pretty regular for us and I'm proud to bring our visitors here too!

When I first moved to this area, I was looking for something different. Well I found it at Pho 36. I would give the food five stars and the service only three stars if they are busy. With that being said, it is still one of my favorite places to eat. The chicken wings are so amazing!!!

I love Vietnamese food, in Los Angeles where I live, I eat it regularly. I have to say this is Vietnamese home cooking, simple, inviting and something mom would make you ( if you're Vietnamese). Situated in a strip mall and way to easy to miss, they would be a sure hit if they started delivery services. If I lived here this would be a regular stop. I know it will be when I come to visit my mom. I would say, if you think you like Chinese food, take a gamble that's sure to pay off. The broth for the phò is really quite good and don't forget to add the herbs and jalapeños. I'll be back again and I'm glad I have the Bàhn Mi sandwich in the fridge hint: good sandwiches to have at lunch with a café fin sua dá (fancy ice coffee done old school)

This place is by far the best restaurant in Avon and the best Vietnamese food in all of Indianapolis! What makes it even better is the fact that the management and entire staff are the nicest people you'll ever meet!!!

Build your own pho?? Yes please! I was having a craving for pho, like I do everyday and decided to give in. I work on the west side and had heard wonderful things about this place, so I called in the order-"Chicken Pho and Spring Rolls please!" The place itself is small but very clean. I waited only a few minutes and my food was ready. Once I got home I realized that everything was separate. There was a bowl with the broth, a container with noodles and chicken and a container with the basil, bean sprouts, lime and jalapeño. What fun! Once I constructed everything, I dug in! It was delicious! The spring rolls were good as well! There was definitely enough soup for another meal. So overall it's really good food for a very reasonable price!

I have a confession, this was the first time I have ever had pho! I know, I am very behind. But at least I can now say I have tried it. It was late on a Saturday and my husband, sister and I were HUNGRY. We decided to try out Pho 36 because my husband and I have been wanting to do so and my sister is always down to try new food. We got there about a half hour before they were to close and I felt a bit guilty but the owner did not care at all! Perfect start. We spent some time with the menu and asked a couple questions and prior reviews have described him perfectly, nice but witty and the conversation was fun. We started with a couple of bubble teas, I tried mango, my sister got green tea and they were both delicious, my only small complaint came from these though, there were definitely some large chunks of ice that were a bit annoying but honestly, the rest of it was so tasty, I didn't mind. We also tried the spring rolls and they were fresh and delicious. We all got pho, though I think we all got slightly different versions. I didn't really know what to do with everything but I just put some stuff in and dove right in. It was very good and perfect for a cold night. We all tried to finish as much as we could and the large size is definitely large! We wished we had saved some more space in our stomachs for dessert, but that will have to be next time. I will definitely be back soon to try more of the dishes on the menu and get some more bubble tea! I really want to try the avocado one!

Great owner great food. No complaints at all. I live on the special pho.and I order a Bahn mi and ask them to pack it for lunch tomorrow and they wrap the vegetables seperate so it stays fresh. I have tried over half the menu and the only thing I didn't like was the catfish soup.

Their sandwiches used to be amazing! Why did the bread change?? The original bread was so light and delicious. It went perfectly with the other ingredients. We got sandwiches to go yesterday and the bread was thick and tough - like sub sandwich bread. You couldn't taste the other ingredients. Bring back the other bread!

I absolutely love this little place! I'd never had Pho before, so we went with a friend and fell in love. The soup has SO MUCH FLAVOR! It's owned by a Vietnamese family (the man running the front is the husband) and the mother in law is the one who created all of the recipes. We have had the beef, meatball, rice cakes, spring rolls...you really can't go wrong here. And the bubble tea? The kids loved it!

  • Tamara Q.

The food was prepared fast for take out. I waited inside after ordering and it was done in 10 minutes. The spring rolls are smaller than what I'm used to for the price, but the pho was pretty standard. I am going to try a banh mi to make a comparison to other indy places.

We were going elsewhere for a Vietnamese lunch when our original location was unavailable and we drove 45 minutes to come here. It was well worth it! The Pho, bahn mi and stir fried noodles were delicious. Planning on making the drive up from Indianapolis at least once a week.

I had actually never been to Avon before, but we were looking for a Vietnamese place that we haven't tried yet and this seemed to fit the bill. It's good - not great. Solid place for a bowl of Pho and a Bánh mì. I ordered the rare steak Pho, which did not come out very rare or tender. The broth was good. Bánh mì was ok, not stunning. One thing that was amazing was the coconut bubble tea. Very nice flavor, good amount of sweetness, and bubbles! Yum! I'd go back just for that.

I was in a hurry when I stopped in for lunch that day, and they were very nice and accommodating - my food came out of the kitchen nice and hot in about 5 mins! The pho is delicious, definitely no complaints! I also got a taro bubble tea to go along with my meal, and perhaps it was because I was in such a rush (& as a result they were too), there was definitely a little too much syrup or what not in it...it was soooo sweet!! I literally had to water it down while sipping on it as I was driving in the car. Even so, I will definitely be back the next time I'm in the greater Indy area!!

So the Chicken Pho. Perfect. Sweet, Spicy, Salty...Ohh let me count the ways I love you. This place is totally amazing! The staff is very friendly service is quick for carry out as well. Love the cabbage salad with pork as well. We eat here at least 3 times per month and it's always on point.

The broth of the pho needs some improvement, it is different from what I am used to in california. In my view, it lacks a bit of umami taste that is the signature of Pho. I almost feel the broth was diluted after it was done. In any case, a welcome addition to the Indianapolis restaurant scene.

My husband and I decided to try something new a couple weeks ago. We can't stop talking about how good Pho36 is!! We loved the Spring Rolls so much we had two orders. They were all fresh ingredients and not fried. Oh, so good! Then, our entrees were both great to. We will be back on that side of town nov 1st and will be eating there again! We can't wait! The decor is not much, but it does not matter, because the food is so good!

Great Spring rolls and the pho was spot on!! Great find in the vanilla town of Avon! My two girls and I had two orders of spring rolls and a large bowl of pho. $16.00. Incredibly reasonable!

  • Stu D.

I've had Pho...this is VERY good. The broth may be a TAD bit weak...but the FRESH Thai basil, sprouts, cilantro, and jalapeno slices (served with..not in..the Pho)...combined with a GENEROUS squirt of Sriracha and Hoisin (both at the table) makes the GIGANTIC bowl of Pho MORE than satisfying. I order LEAN brisket for mine (Mike will be more than happy to accommodate you), and the result was a hot, slurping FEAST. OH, and DO NOT PASS the shrimp rolls with the delectable peanut dipping sauce!!! I have been going there for over 2 years, and I look forward to going again (ESPECIALLY now that it's cols out). Go....just go. For the Pepperheads: Sriracha is my ketchup, so the infusion of HEAT n SWEET is UMAMI! They will also serve a special pepper relish if you are silly enough to try it. THIS PLACE IS PEPPERHEAD FRIENDLY! GO!

We tried a ban mi as well as the pho. Both wet good and best of all unique for an area lines with every chain restaurant on the sun. The ambience leaves something to be desired but service makes up for it. A much better alternative to endless string of Avon choices serving "chicken fingers & fries"!

Love this restaurant! It's a must have for our family once a week. We always get two of the number 10's, number 5, and number 3. Must try restaurant!

My second trip here, and still incredible food. Spring rolls, Pho and grilled pork Banh Mi were fantastic, but my wife's Curried Chicken was the real surprise. Packed with flavor, cooked properly and great balance between sauce, vegetables and meat. This small little strip center shop serves top notch food!

Food is fresh and very quick. The establishment is clean and orderly. However, if you're looking for southern pho or pho nam, this isn't the place. The pho broth is very simple and is served with a tough meat (I think it was lean flank), no brisket or other beef options, and garnishes are minimal. Buns are fresh and good, and what I keep going back for. Fish sauce and spring rolls are good. Not at all a bad place, especially if you aren't particular about your Vietnamese food.

Finally a Pho and Banh Mi (my FAVAORITE SANDWICH) all in one spot! After reading alot of positive reviews from Yelp users for this place I finally made it down to Rockville Road to try for my self. I went during lunch and ordered the Grilled Beef spring rolls and the Grilled Pork Banh Mi. The spring rolls were made fresh and had grilled beef, vermicilli and mint wrapped inside served with a side chili/fish sauce. These were very fresh tasting and that mint added just the right amount of herby-ness. The Banh Mi was SO GOOD! Now I am a Banh Mi snob...yeah I said it. I believe that as with any sandwich the bread accounts for 50% of how good or bad a sandwich is. You can have the best toppings in the world but if you dont have the right crusty/chewy/soft bread to serve it in, whats the point?!?!? Pho 36's Grilled Prok Banh Mi met all my criteria. It was a decent size (12"), pork was grilled just enough and not dry. The mayo on the sandwich tasted homemade. The toppongs (shredded carrots/shredded daikon radish/cilantro) were super fresh and added a great crunch. Add a lil Siracha and were off! Alot of Banh Mi sandwiches tend to not be filing enough (hence me ordering the spring rolls on this trip as well) but Pho 36's sandwich was just the right size for me and was filling. The resturant itself is small (maybe 25-30 seats) but it was very clean and the gentlman who took my order was very knowledgable about the menu and had answers to all my questions. Pho #^ will now be added to my weekly rotation now as I have not been able to stop thinking of my sandwich. Cant wait for the cooler months to arrive so I can start making my way through all the Pho selections on the menu.

This is a locally owned and run restaurant that is not only delicious but very reasonably priced. When good taste and great price come together that is a rare find. The place is small so may get packed during peak hours but we normally have no trouble finding a table. Mike keeps things moving and the service is great. When I first asked 'What do you recommend as being excellent?' on the menu Mike answered 'everything'. I thought he was kidding and hyping at the time but as I tried more dishes I realized he was telling the truth. EVERYTHING I have tried there is wonderful. My wife and I especially love the egg rolls. I think you will like Pho 36. Give it a try. p.s. this is a great place for vegetarian or anyone with GLUTEN issues.

Quick , tasty, cheap pho! Lots of options, all the authentic add-ins. I haven't yet tried the bahn mi, but soon.... Clean diner type setting. The single server, waiter, head of house (owner?) is very nice. I've heard him explaining dishes (no, he's not Vietnamese). I last tried the bubble tea last year--it was ok, but not the best. But I'll definitely be back.

Pho 36 is our favorite place in Indy for Bahn Mi (Vietnamese subs). They have their French bread made to their recipe by a local baker (I didn't think you could get good French bread in indy but they pull it off, it's like a good Parisian French loaf). They make all their own ingredients from the mayo to the pate to the pickled veg. We've tried all of the subs and our favorites are the pork and (wait for it) tofu. Really not a big tofu fan but it takes on the flavors of the sandwich and is a perfect vehicle for the sandwich. Their are other good bahn mi sandwiches in town but none are as good. K&T makes a great sandwich but their bread is delivered frozen from Chicago and it shows. It's very crumbly and the texture is not there. Pho 54 started making bahn mi but they use a Hispanic bakery and the bread is soft (not bad, but not French). Super Pho in westfield makes an excellent sub (4 star) but again not quite as good as Pho 36 (this is our 2nd favorite banh mi shop). Pho 36 also makes a good egg/pork pie, goi con roll and chicken salad. We like many of the other dishes but we go for the Bahn Mi. Hint: this is not far from the airport. We have more than once picked up sandwiches to take on the plane. They will put the wet ingredients in a plastic bag so your bread doesn't get soggy.

Finally there is a great Vietnamese restaurant in my area! The Pho is so fantastic that I haven't tried any of the other main dishes. However, I can tell you that the fresh spring rolls are amazing and the Vietnamese Iced Coffee is thick and sweet! Not a huge amount of room, about 12 tables of 4,that can be purchased together for groups up to 10 or so. It can be crowded for dinner, but is well worth it!

Great independent restaurant lost in a sea of mediocre chain restaurants. The owner and his wife are very friendly and love chatting you up. It's truly a family business as all the cooks are related to the wife. Extremely reasonable prices, but the true test of a pho house is the broth and Pho 36 comes through with flying colors. Rich and flavorful without being salty. There are also several banh mi sandwiches to choose from and they are all priced $3.75. For fans of bubble tea, they have a small, but well-chosen selection of drinks. Next time I'm lost in the food desert that is Rockville Road in Avon, I will seek out Pho 36 as my oasis.

Very friendly owner who is super nice and will you many suggestions for dinner. While he teased me mercilessly for only wanting red, not green, bell peppers in my food (I swear, they DO taste different), he happily obliged. He told us that everything is made fresh, so you can remove or substitute easily. I was a bit disappointed in the bubble tea. It was definitely power, the ice wasn't broken up enough, and the tapioca balls were a tad overcooked. Still, it will do in a pinch, since bubble teas are nearly impossible to find in this area, especially in Avon.

I don't know much about Pho, but since eating here I have gone out of my way to try different Pho restraunts, and this is still my favorite. It is a Owned/Operated by a local couple, and they are very pleasant & friendly! The Pho Portions are pretty big, and always extremely filling! I highly recommend the number 10, the Rare Beef pho, it is my absolute favorite! My wife loves it when I bring home the Spring Rolls, and their Pate Sandwiches. The Sandwiches are different, but wow, are they good! Great Food, Really Good Prices, and quick and friendly service. Family loves it, and I go out of my way to stop by at least ever week or two.

The foods here are taste so good... Nice price for this amount of food.. Except one thing is.. The bubble tea.. It suppose to be smoothies but is more like a splash ice drink with bubble inside.. Other than that.. Everything is good ^^

My first pho experience and I was not disappointed! The shrimp spring rolls were deliciously paired with a peanut sipping sauce. The big bowl of pho was served with so any fresh veggies I nearly lost my mind, and it was piping hot. The tofu crepe was equality delicious with the sweet chili sauce. The service was great and the atmosphere is a great and minimal. Will definitely return here for a meal next time I'm in Indy

Bahn mi, a perfect sandwich. And Pho 36 overall, it's "eat here 4 times in 3 days" damn good. Here's what we tried in those visits: Grilled beef bahn mi ... 5 stars Lemongrass tofu bahn mi ... 5 stars Hot and sour soup w/ shrimp ... 5 stars Spring rolls ... 4 stars Spicy shrimp w/ rice ... 4 stars Love this place. Not sure why it took us a while to try it, but now that we have, it's an immediate first option (alongside Chipotle) for quick and tasty food on the west side of Indy.

Love the pho here, always fresh and delicious! The owner and his wife who is Vietnamese and is the one who cooks the food are very nice people and polite. Service is always great and the lemonade is to die for!! Prices are decent and the servings are enormous. I buy something eat half, I'm stuffed and are the other half for another meal when I get hungry again. Really is two meals for the price of one :) a must try of you're in the area.

We went here for the first time on Thursday night. The Pho was soooo good that we ordered a large to-go, as well. And we were back again today for another round! It's just outstanding. The spring rolls are very good and different, Egg rolls were fresh and quite tasty. The owner is very pleasant and the service was quick and spot on. Portions are good sized and price is very reasonable. A little jewel in Avon! Hard to believe. Avon?

When my girlfriend and I are in town we usually always make it a point to visit Pho 36. The staff is very friendly and is very knowledgable of their menu. The spring rolls are very fresh and delicious, and the pho is amazing as well.

I love this place! The beef pho (#10) is my go-to. The service is fast and friendly, and the food is fresh & delicious. I also recommend the fried rice cakes w/ egg (#5) as an appetizer or side item. Yum.

The food was prepared fast for take out. I waited inside after ordering and it was done in 10 minutes. The spring rolls are smaller than what I'm used to for the price, but the pho was pretty standard. I am going to try a banh mi to make a comparison to other indy places.

Probably the best overall Vietnamese restaurant in Indy! Great pho, amazing banh mi and other dishes. Also try their coffee and bubble tea. Service is always good and prices are below average.

The foods here are taste so good... Nice price for this amount of food.. Except one thing is.. The bubble tea.. It suppose to be smoothies but is more like a splash ice drink with bubble inside.. Other than that.. Everything is good ^^

  • Kathleen D.

Dang.

Solid Vietnamese cafe style restaurant. No bells and whistles. Nice spring rolls, but the beef in the Pho was nothing to crow about. Probably better earlier I'm lunch rush. Generally a great addition to the area, ESP since the demise of green leaf.

I'm not a big fan of mint but I still enjoyed the spring rolls. And the pho was a tad too spicy for me. BUT I recognize tasty food, and great customer service. They're definitely doing it right at Pho 36!

I was a bit nervous about trying a new cuisine and I absolutely loved it! The owner/manager was helpful in selecting the right dish to start off with and the pho was fabulous! Prices were right, service was terrific, and the ingredients were fresh and expertly prepared. A long drive out there from Carmel, but we will definitely be making the trip out to Avon for Pho 36 again soon!
