We dined at Mirani's last night--Saturday. I made a rez on Open Table and the reviews there seemed good! I have eaten there years ago and it was time to go back. We just felt like it. I love the decor and the bar is fabulous. Perfect place to meet someone for a drink. But the food was 'just okay'. It's like it's a place past it's prime, maybe resting on its laurels a bit too much, or they just don't care anymore. We asked about the Prix Fixe dinner which was on the menu for $45 and the waitress said we could order any three items--appetizer, entree, and dessert---as long as they didn't go over $45. Huh? But then another waitress said, Nah, that's not the case which made more sense. The Onion Soup was just okay. I wouldn't order it again. Their chef should go to Mon Ami Gabi and see what real Onion Soup w Gruyere can be. The filet w wild mushrooms was pretty good but was over sauced. No need for all that sauce when the meat was really quite good. Dessert wasn't worth the calories. The most surprising thing was that the bread was just okay. And the butter tasted stale to me. I thought the bread and butter would be fabulous. But the SERVICE was something serious to complain about. I was about ready to go up to the bar just to get some more water in my water glass! There were no refills of water, coffee, and no asking if we wanted wine with dinner either. And we wanted a couple of glasses. Maybe they needed more servers. Our waitress was very sweet when she came by our table though. I asked that my leftover beef be wrapped up so I could take it home, and that never happened either. I dunno, it's a really pretty place with an amazing location, but I would go someplace else next time. Also it was a Saturday night and the place was about 2/3rds empty. I remember going here a few years ago and it was hopping! The bar packed. The whole place abuzz. That is what we were looking for last night.

Best dinner option in Winnetka. Food is excellent. Salads are delicious -- taste european - light and full of flavor. Steaks are best in Chicago. Great size and so well prepared. Ambiance is sophisticated and calm enough to have a conversation. And, it is not too cold. Service is attentive and non-intrusive. Great place. Only sophisticated dining option for miles around.

Wow, I can't believe the low reviews for this place!! I realize that it's not the best meal I've ever eaten, and maybe it doesn't stand up to some of the best brasseries in Chicago, but it's good authentic french food served by wonderful people. If you can't tell, I love Mirani's. It's my family's "special occasion" restaurant. The food is great. I have never been disappointed. The french onion soup and all of the salads are really good and I always get the steak au burre which I find excellent. The frites they serve with the steak are also really really good. Wonderful wine selection. Most importantly, however, the owners are wonderful. So helpful, friendly and they really employ good people. I do think that the place lost a lot of its ambiance when it moved from Hubbard Woods to its current location, but that happens. The food quality stayed the same and the service as well.

Went here for dinner last night, and we had a lovely time. I'm not sure what these 1-2 star reviews are about! Madeline was our server, she was very sweet and didn't rush us out the door when we were the last table there at 9:30 on a Wednesday. We started with the muscles which were very tender, and the prosciutto and mozzarella which was flavorful, the salty meat being balanced by the rich, creamy cheese. I had the roulette de poulet which was very tasty, but the mashed potatoes it came with were nothing very special. My date had the steak poivre which had a great flavor. The frites were interesting, almost like a cross between potato chip and fry. A good bottle of wine and a romantic atmosphere, this is a great date spot. It's not the best French food I have had in Chicago, but it is a nice little spot with an authentic European vibe.

About once a month, I find myself wishing Mirani's was better. It has so much going for it. Warm, charming ambiance, friendly servers, good location in downtown Winnetka, and one of the few non-corporate restaurants the suburbs seem to offer. But both times I've been to MIrani's the food sorely disappointed. Fill up on the fries that come with the steak frites, because the steak is tough and poor quality. Soups taste canned. Salads are embarrassing (one was lettuce, tomato and store bought dressing). Whitefish was so bland I had to ask for salt. There are so many amazing French bistros in the city (Bistro Campagne, Bistro Zinc, Le Bouchon, Kiki's) that have far superior food, making it hard for me to justify giving Mirani's another try. But I really wish them luck. They just sorely need a new menu (it's very limited) and new chef.

Probably the worst steak and fries I have ever had. Wine was good, not overpriced, but the tab for a terrible meal was crazy. Appetizer was tasty but what is the going rate for 2 skimpy scallops? Not going back there again. Avoid and check out others. Service was marginal and I had to actually yell out to our server even though the place was virtually empty. If I could, I would want my money back

Do not go if you enjoy fine food, and want value for $ spent. I was initially impressed with the decor. Completely charming, warm atmosphere, nice music, etc. That is where the good things end. The food tries to be something it is not to justify high prices. Fixed price menu for $45. is completely disappointing. Starting with mushroom soup (canned is equal), moving on to a fish in fillo (totally inedible) and finishing with a dessert that appeared to be put together with ready made ingredients, this is an unacceptable amount of money to pay. Well...it's Winnetka. Maybe the North Shore doesn't mind. I think it deserves better!

Nice French bistro-like decor on the inside. Ordered the Steak Classique and could not stop eating the frites. Red wine sauce enhanced the sirloin taste. Started off with the prosciutto et mozzarella which was a success. Disappointed that they were out of the cheese plate for dessert. Also was surprised that they ran out of spoons to eat our pear dessert and that they were unable to find a way to break large bills for our check. Seems like they were overwhelmed for Valentine's Day dinner. It also got cold inside the restaurant when people were entering and leaving but there's not much you can do about that if you don't have double doors. Would come back here but definitely have other places to visit first.

This place is DEFINITELY better than 3-stars. We're always surprised to find empty seats. It's so nice to be in those gracious rooms. GREAT place for a quiet conversation while dining on VERY satisfying dishes. The service is very friendly and accommodating. The one improvement I would add is some quiet jazz piano or something like that. With those high ceilings, some live music would be fantastic. We always look forward to going back again.

Wonderful ambience. I had been to their previous location and they certainly hv upped it a few notches. It's larger but very cozy. The food is excellent. I had a chicken breast in a very good cheese sauce that I asked for on the side because I wasn't sure I wd like it. It was delicious. The mashed potatoes were good too. All in all an excellent experience.

We used to frequent Mirani's quite a bit and the food was decent, but why we stay away now is that the service is unfriendly and unwelcoming, which is very disappointing especially if you are a regular patron. In addition, on more times that we care to remember we had to send wine glasses back because they were dirty. Finally, their so-called specials are always the same, for over a year. It is such a shame because it is in a great location and has such potential.

I live in Winnetka and was a regular at Mirani's for a while because the food is pretty good and you can always get seated right away. But I just can't go back. On at least 4 visits, I had to ask for a clean wine glass because mine had someone else's lipstick on it. The service is always slow. And the wait staff, even though we'd go 2-3 times a month, never even acknowledged that they recognized us. Great location, but poor decor and no warmth in the people.

  • James B.

Soooo close and yet soooo far.... We really, really want to love it - but can't do it. Mirani's is a "high beta" experience - it can be great or it can rub you the wrong way. If you haven't been, its worth a gamble - you can have a nice meal there - but you're rolling the dice on service. After my wife and I have been to Mirani's a dozen or so times, we finally figured out what bothers us. Yes, the meals can be delicious-- especially the steaks (frites/au poive/buerre)--and yes, the deserts are really good; and no, we don't mind good $$$ for good wines (nice selection, especially French, if you can navigate around the wait staff). But, fundamentally, it is not a consistently warm and welcoming place. The turnover in the wait staff, the owners spotty attention to the dining experience, the cluelessly loud music have accumulated into a barrier that keeps us from returning regularly. I can appreciate the challenges with costs and wait staff, etc. But the bigger issue seems to be one of approach and attitude, that management does not have the gumption to rise above the function of hosting and serving customers to creating a consistently warm and welcoming atmosphere. Instead of easily sliding into a chair at a favorite table and unthinkingly ordering appetizers, deserts, a 2nd bottle of wine, etc., we find ourselves spending our $$ at other local restaurants where we feel welcome and appreciated. We love the idea of a local restaurant with good food and wine, a little upscale and up palate that could be our neighborhood place. But, unfortunately, Mirani's isn't it.

  • Brent J.

If Mirani's were in Manhattan, it wouldn't deserve four stars. But in Winnetka it's a different story. In a generation this suburb has seen restaurants serving over-cooked meat served with over-cooked vegetables replaced by a few tasteful eateries, including Mirani's. Mirani's has style. Not haut style, but a comfortable cosmopolitan ambiance. A compact bar area is partially walled off from it's high ceilinged main dining area with hard floors and warm lighting. The food at its best is delicious. But, as the Yelp reviews collectively indicate, the entrees' quality may be inconsistent. Even so, I have not had a bad meal among the three or four I've had here. Service is Mirani's weakest element. The service is slow during busy hours, and the staff is not well trained. The place is almost empty when it's not packed -- that is, on Friday and Saturday nights. And when it's packed there's not much room to move in the bar area. Crowds like this would not be worth a mention in Chicago, but they are almost a welcome addition to Winnetka's staid nightlife.

I have been to Mirani's quite a few times; first when they were in the original smaller restaurant and then again after they relocated to the larger, new location. The food? It's been consistently decent. The best food I've had here? Steak au poivre or the steak frites. The seafood ? Inconsistent. Desserts? maybe the strength of their menu. Wines? Overpriced, but what do you want? This is the North Shore....they need to pay the rent on what is likely a seriously expensive lease. I agree with the others reviewers about spotty service. I believe the older gentleman others have mentioned is the owner and/or manager? He seems nice but needs to stop turning the music UP. I have been there multiple times when he turns the tunes up and the customers (including myself) have to yell to the others at their table to be heard. If you want to listen to music, buy an iPod !!!

  • Jess S.

Almost, but not quite. I work in the area and let me tell you, we were excited to see something opening in this long-empty storefront. And it happened to be a local establishment who was relocating. All the better, we thought. Well the restaurant has been opened for months and not all the kinks have been worked out. I have enjoyed the sandwiches and side salads (Excellent house dressing), as have my co-workers. I have not heard any negatives from my own customers concerning the food. The big problem, why they only receive 2 stars - the service. Not the servers themselves, but the maybe the management? (I am not an expert). Once I was in for a late lunch. The tables started filling and there was only one young lady working the entire floor. You could tell people were restless. I felt bad for her. Good waitstaff is hard to come by up here, but I hope Mirani's can pull through and offer service that matches their prices. (updated review: 2/22/07)

Had dinner at Mirani's this past Friday and it was delicious. The French onion soup ($8) has consistently been excellent and I started with the special seafood tart ($12) which was very good. Entree-wise, we had the specials ($28/ea) - the seared sea scallops, and the flounder en papiote with a beurre rouge (red wine butter sauce). The entrees were delicious. I have had the coq au vin before and this too is very tasty with a nice rich wine flavor.

We went to Mirani's a week ago, looking forward to bistro fare. The menu was OK, but missing any chicken dishes . . . yes they offer 1 chicken dish, one night a week, Coq au vin on Fridays. Nevertheless everyone in our party of four was able to find something to order. The food was average at best. The french onion soup was luke warm and had a canned taste, everything else was adequate. The service, however, is about on par with a bad diner and far below what anyone would expect from a "fine" dining experience. Our waitress asked if wanted drinks before we were completely seated. When we asked for a minute, that is exactly what we got. When we were still not ready she didn't show up for a very long time. Later she spilled water on the bread, saw it happen and walked away. We asked for a replacement. She gladly complied and took the bread plate away. Another server brought the bread, set it directly on the table. We had to hail someone else to actually bring a bread plate and butter. The server who brought the soup nearly spilled it on one of our party. Her only comment was that its hard to carry . . . no apology. Then she started to pass it across the table family style before another server stopped her and showed her the proper way to serve a table. Later when our food was served, the server looked at our table and asked us where she should put the food . . . because no one had cleared the previous course. There is more, but I weary of writing it all and include it only in the hope that management will do something to salvage their business. However, given the consistently poor ratings of the service at Mirani's, I have my doubts.

Good authentic french food prepared well. I have eaten here on 3 occasions and have not been disappointed. The steak frites is excellent. I also have had the seared scallops and they were excellent. The service does need a bit of improving. However, given the excellent food, location and ambiance it still merits a strong rating.

My wife and I have been to Mirani's twice and I will attempt to breakdown each visit. Our first visit was during week night. As you can imagine, the restaurant was not crowded, so the service was acceptable. The atmosphere is nice; it is decorated tastefully and has an upscale feeling with a cozy setting. Our waitress was a teenage girl who was pleasant, but not very knowledgeable when asked questions about the menu, and certainly not the wine list. I ordered the Spaghetti Bolognese, which I was happy with. Overall, the evening was enjoyable, in fact we decided to go back for our anniversary. Our second visit was memorable, but for many bad reasons. My wife had called to make reservations and informed them that it was our anniversary and asked specifically that we NOT be seated by the kitchen and prep area (where the fold napkins, etc.). We had hoped mentioning our anniversary would hold a bit more weight in receiving our request. Alas, when we arrived, they attempted to seat us by the kitchen. Either the request was not noted or the hostess did not inform the individual that led us to our table. No biggie, we just asked to be moved. Again, we had a teenage waitress. We ordered a bottle of wine, salads, and 2 steaks --- Chateaubriand and a Filet Mignon. The wine was opened for us by a woman who was either the owner, or manager. She was pleasant and asked if we were celebrating Valentine's Day. We informed her we were in fact celebrating our anniversary (which will lead me to more in my review later). Both steaks were good, I thought my wife's Chateaubriand was better. The waitress checked on us once during the meal. Once we had finished with our meal, did not come back for 20-25 minutes to clear our plates. We grew anxious and upset. Finally, an older gentleman, possibly the owner, took our plates. Then, we waited again for our waitress as we considered dessert and coffee. She never arrived. We were now fed up. We just wanted our bill and wanted out! After spending over $100 dollars, I would have expected much better service. Matter of fact, I have gotten better service at my local greasy spoon. Again, the older gentlemen assisted and got us our bill. We paid, and left, upset with the experience. In hindsight, we were upset that we were not treated better for an upscale restaurant with high prices. We were also surprised that we weren't catered to a bit more since it was our anniversary. Please note that neither my wife nor I expected anything ahead of time, we have just experienced that type of service on our anniversary before at restaurants that we think fall into the same category as Mirani's. Other restaurants had given us a glass of Champagne and a nice dessert on the house. Mirani's instead gave us sub-par service that left us we a bad taste in our mouth as we tried to celebrate our anniversary. Needless to say, we were both very disappointed and will not be going back. I really hope that we just experienced a bad night and that they can perform a better job at treating their customers, who will spend a good penny, a lot better.

Brent J. hits the nail on the head: judged on its own terms, Mirani's succeeds admirably, but if it were downtown next door to, say, Brasserie Jo, it would probably wither. That said, I enjoyed my experience here, although I wasn't paying (thank you, visiting work vendor). First off, the decor is not nearly as cartoonishly stereotypical as the website photo suggests. It is charming and handsome, although the space itself in the main dining room may be too large to achieve the right kind of mood. Second, our service was fine. Not stupendous, but much better than other reviewers have noted. Granted, this was a Wednesday, but the LONE waitress (the owner helped out here and there) took care of all the tables (sadly only about six, not counting our party of eight). She was warm and friendly, and we never felt neglected. Their bread is among the best I've ever had: crusty on the outside and cloud-soft inside, served warm--no butter required. It nicely complemented the mussels and soupe des champignons with which I started the meal. The mussels were okay, nothing special but with the traditional white wine and garlic broth. We more enjoyed dipping our baguettes in the broth than eating the mussels themselves. The soup also was satisfying but not spectacular; it was semi-pureed with a light cream base. My entree was the steak aux beurre des fines herbes, nice and simple. They perfectly cooked my "medium" order which seemed like the right choice for a thin steak like this. I was confused by the frites. I ordered "Belgian-style" which were simply their regular frites with truffle oil and shaved parmesan. What came out, both Belgian and regular, were not frites at all but more like housemade potato chips--thin and crispy. They were delicious, but I was expecting, you know, actual frites. If they didn't have the additional accoutrements, I would have counted them a disappointment. I'm usually the only one to order dessert in these gatherings, but I don't let it shame me. YOU might feel self-conscious with seven half-strangers watching you enjoy a piece of cake, but not me. All they were offering was cheesecake and chocolate-mousse cake, which is a no-brainer for me. The mousse cake was excellent.

Despite only giving 2 stars, there is a lot to like about this place. The decor and ambiance is charming and Winnetka can use an upscale dining experience. While the food is acceptable, it doesn't really wow you as much as you would expect from the setting. I ordered the classic steak au poivre when we were there, but was not convinced that their interpretation was the best, but the pomme frites and desserts are quite good. Overall, it's a nice date spot, but the food needs a bit more zing.

The food at Mirani's is good. The service is very poor. We just moved into the area and are looking for our special spot. This is not it. We arrived ten minutes before our reservation, and no one was at the hostess stand to greet us nor were they there to greet the next couple. We sat at the bar, and the bartender said she would be with us in a moment, then disappeared into the kitchen. We continued to wait for either a hostess or a bartender to help us, and no one appeared. I flagged down a waitress to get us seated past our reservation time. Our drinks took about fifteen minutes to arrive at our table once ordered; however, the food arrived very promptly. The goat cheese salad was good, but salad overdressed, as was my friend's garden salad. The halibut special, white fish and salmon very good. Cappuccino not drinkable. We will not be going back.

We went here for lunch. Ordered three light meals - half sandwiches with a few leaves of lettuce on the side. Not bad...this isn't Subway. However, while the food was decent and nicely prepared, I have to second what the other yelpers have noted. The service here was frustrating. Not rude, but slow and inattentive. We had to continually ask for help - first for the menus, then to place our orders and finally to get our bill. A real pity, considering how pleasant and classy the restaurant's ambiance is.

When the champagne is free I'm not going to complain....unless my steak is cold by the time it gets to my belly. Right after being served. I was here for a huge party and this place is absolutely gorgeous inside. And the more I drank the more beautiful it looked. There was an open bar and adorable waitresses dressed up in sequin dresses making sure that no one went thirsty. They were extemely nice! The hors'devours were yummy, smoked salmon and cream cheese and massive jumbo shrimp tasting so fresh and incredible. When offered a crab ball the waitress admitted to feeling a little ridiculous saying "crab balls" over and over. Who wouldn't? They were delicious. Our salads were excellent, the desserts were fantastic, the only thing upsetting were the main courses being served cold but as we were at the end of a VERY long table and last to be served I can understand why that happened. The steak still tasted excellent and seriously, after all that free booze I would have probably ate anything set before me with pleasure.

We moved to Winnetka in late August and live very near Mirani's. After 4 or 5 meals, we are sold on the place...and worried. We have not had a bad meal there -- from the yummy mussels in broth appetizer, to the steaks, to the fish, the yummy fresh baked bread on the side...and desserts...and a decent wines-by-the-glass list...I could go on. And the prices are not bad. Service is fine. Our worry comes in seeing that this promising restaurant is largely EMPTY, even on weekends. Granted, it is a bigger space, but I can't understand by Little Ricky's across the street seems to be busting at the seams and Mirani's can't fill even half of its tables on a good night. I've learned from Yelp that the location changed, etc., so maybe that has something to do with it? Regardless, please try Mirani's. I'd hate to see it replaced by some chain restaurant or find yet another empty storefront in the Elm Street "business district". I joined Yelp just to try and get the word out!!

I've been here two or three times and haven't been impressed enough to go back. Overpriced, OK but not great food, average service. I bet if they bring their price points down a bit they'd pack the place; as it is it's almost always empty when I've been there or walked by. That in itself makes for a poor dining experience - I hate being in an empty restaurant, as there's no buzz.

I've been to Mirani's three times since this summer. I think they must have read the negative reviews posted here and worked out all the problems. All three of our dinners have been excellent. The service is fast and friendly. The menu is large and varied. Everything we have ordered has been terrific. The bread served with your entree is the best! We have ordered both steaks and seafood, and it has been consistently good.

I recently moved to the area from New York and the previous review is correct on many points. Its not a great 4 star Manhattan restaurant but its a four star Winnetka restaurant. Easy to get into on weeknights. Our first meal here was perfect with a beautiful, tender cut of meat, the next, not so much. The third, good again. But its close, the people are friendly and although incosistent its generally good and compared to what else Winnetka or Wilmette have to offer, a pleasure.

Friday night, we joined friends who are regulars at Mirani's and are very enthusiastic about its "downtown ambiance." After our evening there, I can only assume they're referring to downtown Sheboygan (my apologies to any decent eateries in that fine community). Following cocktails, we were seated at a table next to a visually appealing wall of wine bottles. Not wanting meat, I asked our personable waiter for a recommendation. He gushed enthusiastically about that day's featured salmon, and I bit. What I got was a piece of mushy fish--overcooked and several days past its prime--and sides that were memorable only for their mediocrity. I'm a trencherman, but even I was forced to put my fork down and return the dish. The staff was very apologetic, but I passed on ordering a replacement, finding satisfaction in a second over-priced martini and a hunk of very fresh sourdough. It's disappointing: I live a short distance from Mirani's and won't return. Mojoman

I will NEVER give this restaurant my business again!!! I had my wedding shower here this past Saturday and it ended on a very sour note. The owner put together a menu at a flat per person rate. The menu included choice of 2 soups and choice of 3 entrees and bottomless non-alcoholic drinks and pastries. On the day of the event, he totally omitted the soup from the menu!!!! Plus he only assigned 1 waitress to work a room of 30 people and she was absolutely rude to my guests: she was caught rolling her eyes several times and she would not give people drink refills when they asked (never mind her asking people if they needed refills- she NEVER asked if anyone needed anything else!) The owner is a total SHYSTER. I asked him why the soup was omitted - he said it was never agreed to despite me showing him the email he sent me outlining what was included! This was a HORRIBLE way to treat his customer (we spent over $1000!! plus I even ordered flowers from his wife!) not to mention he lost all of my guests as potential future customers. What was supposed to be a joyous occasion was overshadowed by the crappy service and the owner's attempts to cut every corner he could to give as little as possible for the flat per person price he charged. He is a lousy human being!

Mirani's is one of the rare restaurants in the suburbs where you can pretty much be sure that you won't be seated next to someone else's kids. A huge plus if you're getting out for a night with your sweetie, paying a babysitter or joining friends. The menu is nicely, but not aggressively French. We love the steak frite and the fish is always fresh and simply prepared. Not flashy food, but prepared by a staff that obviously cared. The only negative; the lack of buzz. This restaurant used to be so loud and packed you couldn't hear the person next to you. Not a problem now. Where has everyone gone? Come on Winnetka, if you want restaurants and a downtown, you need to support the local biz.

I am most disappointed to have to give Mirani's one star, however I cannot justify two stars. With 7:00pm reservations my family was seated at 8:00pm. They could not muster ANY place for us to take a seat, so our party of 5, including my 85 year old grandmother was forced to stand for the entire hour. Mirani's offered no apologies, appetizers or cocktails to ease this inconvenience. The Wait Staff was young and clearly inexperienced; you would expect experienced servers for the prices and ambiance. Although the food was good, I will not be returning out of principle. I can only hope they step up their level of service to avoid losing any other customers. Summer 2007

We were so excited to try this restaurant today. However, we arrived a little late for our 7:00 reservation due to the horrid weather tonight. We were told that we would have to wait for a table because we were late. Although the restaurant was pretty empty. We questioned why we would have to wait and the owner told us that we were late and therefore had to wait for a table. Funny since the restaurant was pretty empty I'm sure because of the weather maybe. We decided not to wait and went across three Street to Avli and had a wonderful dinner. We highly recommend Avli the food and service was outstanding and the owner Louis was grateful that we chose to dine there

Love this place! We always order for lunch on special occasions (ie birthdays). Some of my favorites are, french onion soup, goat cheese salad, and the steak sandwich. I have heard the grilled chicken avocado sandwich is good too, but I can't ever get enough of the steak sandwich! So extremely well made! Defiantly recommend it!!

Dined here with my husband on Valentine's day. Nice atmosphere, good food but super slow service. I didn't like that we were seated outside the kitchen but otherwise everything was ok. My husband ordered the soup to start, which he enjoyed but waited 25 min for it. We ordered the filet with truffle fries and the grilled salmon, all delicious.
