Big Ed has got it going on. I had the Baby Back ribs there is sauce on each table but not really needed. I also had the jacked up Mac & Cheese and the baked beans and a corn muffin. Also got the chocolate cake to go. Big Ed brought me out a slice of his Key Lime pie oh man was I full. I really wished I had drove over from the hotel. The place is very nice no table service but that's OK it is BBQ relax people. They have a full bar and the place is very clean and all the employees make you feel very welcome. It was the best meal I have had is the three weeks I have been in the area.

The food was excellent. Located in the old Pizza Hut building on the outskrts of the old lakehurst mall, This place is the real deal. The ribs were to die for. An excellent bark, not slathered in BBQ sauce,(provided though if that's what you want) the meat was fabulous. Also enjoyed the corn muffins. Would love to have had hush puppies available, but the muffins were excellent as well. Go and enjoy!

Tried the newest Big Ed's today and we were blown away! This place is awesome. The food is the best Barbecue around, and the restaurant has such a cool setup with plenty of seating and a bar to order drinks. Big Ed you did it again!! We'll be back for more

I kept hearing stories about how good Big Ed's BBQ was. It's been in several different locations, but now that it's on my way home, had no reason not to stop in. So far The only meat I've had is the burnt ends...and they are amazing. He chopped a fresh piece of brisket right in front of me. Way more than enough to share. I backed that with the baked beans, mac and cheese, and the cornbread muffin. I can't wait to try the ribs and the hot links. I hear they are to die for. The place doesn't look like much on the outside, but don't let that fool you. It's decorated very nicely inside. There's also a bar if you like a cold brew with your Q.

Delicious! Excited that there is another option for BBQ. Will be going back on a Friday to see the live band.

I've had a hankering for BBQ for quite some time. I checked Big Ed's menu online - and the food really sounded appetizing. So off I went - pulled into the parking lot, did not seem too busy (Sun @ 3pm) - but caught a whiff of smoked goodness. Stepped inside, checked out the menu board - decided on two two-combo plates for take-out - this would allow for an assortment of tasty meats. combo #1 - burnt-ends and ribs, sides of greens and mac n cheese combo #2 - rib-tips and brisket, sides of bbq-mac, and baked-beans. Each combo includes and corn-bread muffin, and bbq sauces. The brisket was NOT overly-smoked - which to me is perfect. I've been to the famous BBQ joints in Lockhart, TX, and they were over smoked...not the case here. The ribs were great as well. The burnt-ends were simply awesome - juicy, full of flavor. If you enjoy cartilage, then order the rib-tips, while cooked fine, were too little meat.all the sides were excellent. I believe my go-to will be the two-combo, with burnt-ends, and brisket - sides of beans, and bbq-mac. The total cost for the food was about $38. Each combo meal could easily feed three people. The business had been located in downtown Waukegan - and this move to Fountain Square had been in the works for over a year. They also have a business in Libertyville - this was my first visit to Big Ed's. I'll be back - please steer clear of the burnt-ends - they're mine, all mine!!!

Love this place.... Go early or you may miss out on the ribs, which my husband and I did the other Friday night. We settled for rib tips which I thought were fabulous. Ribs did come out a bit later but who can wait? We wanted to stay and hear the blues that started at 8 pm every Friday night. They have a full bar so we just planked our fannies at the bar once we we got our food. Don't miss the chocolate sheet cake. Take it to go as you won't have any room to stuff it in. Texas sheet cake.... Check my tips for how this sweet treat is prepared.

So glad, Ed is doing so well at this location. But prefer the table service offered at the old location. It just isn't upscale dining anymore. Also, I think a restaurant has to be impeccably clean when it's cafeteria style. Ed's isn't quite there yet. But there's potential: This location seems understaffed, and many of problems are solvable. Will give Ed a few months to work out the kinks before taking this location off our regular rotation. Dropping review to 2 stars. My partner got sick after eating the coleslaw here. It's too bad. This was one of Mark's and my favorite restaurants.

Awesome, doesn't matter where they decide to have their food at, North Chicago, Genesse Street, Libertyville or by the old Lakehurst property. Their ribs are simply the meatiest and best tasting in northern IL. Buy the full slab and if you have to sauce them go ahead but they're better without sauce!!! Sides are good too but their desserts are worth saving room for. Tell sweet Kim "Hello" when you get there and watch out for Mr. Big Ed. I'm sure, he's glad there are no stairs in this location!!!! -CE

I love their rib tips and the house Mac and cheese with bits of pulled pork. Pretty extensive offerings. It also has a bar if you feel like having a stiff drink with your ribs.

AMAZING in every aspect! The bbq is just the best. All of it! The sides....homemade and delicious! The deserts....again homemade and made with love! The new location is clean and a pretty good system for serving that you still feel like it's full service dining! The staff is not only accommodating but beyond friendly..... We laughed and were smiling our whole visit. Love this place. If you're looking for a BBQ restaurant look no further!

Although the pulled pork sandwich and fries were decent, it certainly wasn't worth the $13 I paid for it. I also got a soft drink. I was disappointed that I paid that much for lunch.

I ordered the combo plate of rib tips and burnt ends... very very good. I think even though I went today I will probably going again this weekend. The mac and cheese was decent and went well with everything. The fries were fresh cut and excellent. A big plus was the variety of sauces.

Best BBQ in northern Illinois! My family loves the brisket and Mac and cheese, though everything we have tried here is outstanding! We come here every week!

I found this place by using Yelp. Don't let the abandoned Pizza Hut exterior keep you from trying this place out. The inside is remodeled and the food is top notch. I had the burnt ends sandwich and it was some of the best burnt ends I've ever had. They are smoked for 17 hours. I also had mac and cheese, hand cut fries and a cornbread muffin. Everything seemed homemade. Definitely was surprised by this place. I did wish they relabeled their bbq sauces. They were worn so I just dumped them all on my tasty sandwich and it was superb.

Tried out Big Ed's at Fountain Square and OMG!!!!! Talk about some excellent bbq. Had the rib tip dinner with mac&cheese, & mashed potatoes not to mention the BEST peach cobbler (next to Gma's) ever. Wanted sone BIG TONY MAC & CHEESE but i figure you gotta get there pretty early for that...Thanks again Big Ed for a spectacular meal.

Unfortunately the ribs and brisket were dry. I also miss the table service. Sauces are great. The meat needs to be pulled from the smoker a little earlier.

Finally, a great BBQ joint in my area! I tried the baby backs. Extremely tender and flavorful, with a variety of sauces available at your table. The corn bread was amazing! Great vibe. The employees are having a great time behind the counter which in turn encourages a friendly atmosphere among the diners. This will definitely top my list of favorite local eateries! We will be regular customers!

The family and I came to visit the area for the NAVY graduation. We're from Brooklyn so sometimes we're skeptical of small towns. This place is delicious and charming - large portions for the price, fantastic live blues music on a Friday, and great service with a smile. I had rib tips, chicken, corn bread, Mac & cheese and cole slaw. Couldn't finish it but certainly left with a smile! Fat tire beer helped with that smile too!

Trying out the new location. Ribs are still the best, and the burnt ends are fantastic. Sides were just okay except for the french fries were hot and fresh cut. A little disappointed that they are cafeteria style now. But I will keep you updated when I return.

Fantabulous bbq! Had tips and brisket with a side of Cole slaw and mac n cheese. Outstanding and they have a variety of bbq sauces on the table. Sauces could have been better marked--they just have one letter on the plastic squeeze bottles that they have the sauces in. I like this location much better than his old spot. It's bigger and had a bar. They also have live music on Friday nights. Hope they make a go of it here.

Awesome BBQ and sides. I got the combo with brisket and ribs. The ribs came off the bone easily and the brisket was amazing. The mashed potatoes were my favorite of my two sides but the baked beans were also really good. Definitely coming back next time I'm in the area! Also, the staff was extremely friendly and welcoming.

Saturday was my first visit to this location (I've eaten many times at the old North Chicago and Genesee locations). The latest incarnation is located in the old Pizza Hut (from the Lakehurst days). When you walk in you catch a cool but relaxed vibe. The decor is clean, and minimalist, with splashes of sports memorabilia. Bluesy-rock music surrounds you, and enhances the experience. On this visit, as is so often the case: Big Ed was working hard, but greeted most everyone as they walked in. I typically order the pulled pork or beef brisket. Today I ordered the burnt ends - Incredible! They have about eight different homemade sauces. My favorites are original and Kansas City. If you love legit BBQ - this is the place.

A friend has been talking about Big Ed's for years, and we finally tried it. Most of the of the ribs in this area are too dry, no smoke flavor, or re-heated pre-packed nonsense. Not the case with Ed's. We grabbed a to-go order at dinner time on a Saturday, I got a brisket and rib combo and my wife had a half rack of ribs. Both of us were blown away. Tender smoky ribs with a great run and same for the brisket. The meat was just fantastic. For sides, we had the Mac & Cheese, cole slaw, mash potatoes and the Tony Mac & Cheese. All were excellent, the mashed potatoes being the best I have eaten at any restaurant. We wrapped it up with the chocolate cake, which also was perfect. Just go, it's worth it.

How does a RIB place run out of ribs? On multiple visits. Is it me??? I've gone three times wanting to eat these GREAT ribs everyone keeps talking about and they never have any left. I've gone on different times of the day and different days of the week and NOTHING. I ended up getting something else that was way overpriced. Food was average and did not make sense why the price was expensive. won't go back. At this point i'll just go to Hillary's.

Let me start out by saying this BBQ is the best in Lake County....portions are fair and the sides delicious. Definitely order the burntd ends...along with the tips. At least five different type of sauces...all worth a try, but we prefer the original. Now the down side, call in advance to see if they are open and what they have left to order...the hours are a little crazy. For example, they close at 9 during the week, not ten. The first we ate there was several weeks ago, and arrived at 8 pm...all they had left was tips, brisket, and pork. Told they had a busy day.....but the real issue is at a closing time of 9, at 8:25 they started to close down and refused service to people who walked in at 8:35 or so...not a good business practice. This Saturday, 5/23.\, we drove up there around 7 pm, and the place was totally closed down...on a nite there supposed to be open until 12 or 1am with a band. The final thing is you order where they cut up and prepare your tray, instead of where the cashier is....so between the (duh people) and the people watching the tray prepared it becomes a real hold up. Maybe someday the owner will figure out to place the order with the cashier, pay and the girl give you a numbered tent to put on your table. Then the food can get delivered to you.....not very hard to figure out. Since this is his fourth venture into the restaurant business one would think these issues would not exist. Until they get these issues resolved, a three rating is the best I can offer up....I had a two at first, but the food quality boosted it to a three.
