I'm an "outta towner" so I chose this place strictly on the yelp reviews. I thought, "geez people, it's a sandwich...how good can it be?" Uh, great. This place is great. The sweetbread is delish. I drove 5 miles outta my way to eat it for lunch the second day. Plus, I'm a sucker for a souvenir cup!

Best overall subs in Springfield!! Awesome bread, great sandwiches and good soups. My favorite is the Tom Turkey. It's turkey salad with cheese and all of the fixings. Every sub I've ever had here is above average to awesome.

Great homemade subs! Love the large bread and delicious fillings. Egg salad was fresh and had tons of flavor with the extra dressing and spices. Definitely will be coming back.

So good. Some might complain about too much meat, but for that price, you can not beat it!! This is not my favorite location but they are always fast!

If I lived in Springfield still, I would be addicted to Monty's. The bread is soft and a tiny bit sweet and the turkey that they use is fantastic. I also really love the spicy deli mustard that they have - ask for it on your sandwich and it will make your little nosey tingle! My only problem is that there seems to always be a line and while I realize it takes time to make a nice, fresh, sandwich, I wish the making of the sandwiches was just a tiny bit quicker - like as in could use another body to help out sometimes quicker. Oh - and if you're a fan of Diet Mt. Dew like I am, then you will be glad to know that this is one of those rare establishments that has it so yay for that!

Delicious soups and subs. They have fantastic bread, it's not just a vehicle to get the meat and cheese to your mouth. It actually has flavor. They have a good selection and you can get subs hot or cold. I love the toasted Reuben and the cheesehead. I don't think I have had a bad sub there at all. As far as soup, I am not a soup eater but they have a delicious cheese soup and a cream of mushroom that is so good. The staff neither friendly nor unfriendly, they are just there. Every once in a while there is a friendly person but they mostly are just silent.

Eh. They were out of sweet bread so I just ordered a turkey and a veggie. Pretty standard sandwiches. Don't see what all the fuss is about.

Monty's is a decent sammich. Used to be the only game in town so where we went for lunch when running errands on the weekends. Always busy so be prepared to stand in line, esp on a weekday. Good sandwiches, great bread (we like wheat), haven't tried anything else. Hubs likes the Hamlet, I like the Italiano. Have to say we have not been here in a few years so not sure what things are like now but the staff were always nice and helpful.

Ok, I love Monty's. I have loved it for years, and spent one summer as such a regular that they could start my order as soon as I drove up. The Turkey Tom and the Cheesehead are my go-to favorites. They also have awesome cookies and brownies. However, since I have moved away and only get to go here on occasion, I have noticed a disheartening decline in the store. They have always had the understaffed problem, usually two guys max working behind the counter, but they're quick so it's not a huge deal. I was in here in July while visiting home, and the place was a mess. Honestly I think they just need an overhaul... new floors and benches. I can remember when the big high-top table in the front was brand new, and now it's just sad looking. This isn't to say the food doesn't still rock, because it does. The staff is just as nice as ever too. So if you're in the neighborhood, give it a shot. Ignore the dinginess, your taste buds will thank you.

Monty's Subs makes a good sandwich, probably the best one can get in Springfield. Never a long wait, big simple menu and cool reusable plastic cups. But more importantly they have great bread and and a zesty homemade special sauce that gives their sandwiches a nice bite. But don't mess around and get something different like an all cheese or a Rueben. These could be good in another setting but at Montys I recommend turkey, ham, or both.

Best sandwiches ever in Springpatch! Crunchy toasted bread. Great dressing. Piled on high stacks of turkey (or whichever meat you want) Juicy and gooey cheese melted. I love it here. And the prices are so great for the value!!!

Let me preface by saying that we drove to three restaurants at 2:30 on a Saturday before we came here....everyplace was closed for the day. So, finding this place is a little bit of a challenge, because half of the sign is broken off...look for "Monty" with a yellow background. There was ONE guy working, and he was busy. The entire time we were there, he was preparing food. He was pleasant, although really sniffly, which made me watch him a lot. He wore gloves and was sanitary. The location- it was sorta dirty. Ok, not sorta- just was. The floor hasn't seen a good scrubbing in a long time. I am not going to ding them for all of the tables having stuff on them; it was busy and he was alone. The food prep area looked fine enough. The food- I had a gobbler. The bread was really good. They use iceberg lettuce, which has no flavor and no nutritional value, but it was ok. The onion was mild. I got the dressing on the side, and my husband and I both agreed that it was fantastic. I really liked it a lot. The sandwich was huge, so that in itself was PLENTY...no chips or soup needed. Would I go back, when in Springfield, absolutely! But, I will make sure that I am not there during the heat of the lunch hour- I am betting it's packed and takes a bit.

Popped in for a late lunch based on Yelp reviews. Only 1 guy working but he was very pleasant. The shop is certainly not much to look at but I know that means nothing about the food, and that is certainly true of Monty's. My Cuban on the grill press was good- you can tell they use good quality ingredients. Kelly's Gobbler sandwich was excellent - again good quality ingredients but both of us agreed it was the house Italian dressing on it the really made the sandwich. You can really taste the garlic in the Italian- yum! We are definately looking forward to going back again next time we are in Springfield.

Great locally owned, small chain of sub shops. All are made to order right in front of you (Subway Style). The subs are pretty good and I love the soups and cookies as well. They have subs served cold or toasted but the ovens are a bit out of date. The subs are never hot all the way through more simply toasted on the outside. The subs can be a bit bland so have them add seasoning or dressing. Still, these subs are really good :-)

It really seems finding a place to make a good sandwich west of Lake Erie is like trying to find that notorious needle. Went here on the gf's reco for a quick bite. Got the Cuban. Pork was actually decent quality which was what I was most worried about. Filling inside the sandwich was just light on all accounts and the meat to veggie ratio was borderline abysmal. I ate the whole thing in about 2 minutes and was still quite hungry. Certainly not breathtaking, barely even noteworthy. I'm actually regretting taking the time to review it as I write this very sentence. I know my quote advises enjoying every sandwich, but I'll have to apologize to Warren on this one.

Good food, good service. Call your order in ahead if you plan on going for lunch, the line can get pretty long.

alternate between monty's and head west and you'll never have to go anywhere else for sandwiches.

Best sandwich ever!!! Go Italiano. I lived away from Springfield for about 10 years and this was the one place I missed.

  • Guido S.

These are some of the best, if not THE best, subs I've had. And I think these guys were toasting subs long before the chains caught on. I highly recommend the Hamlit, Gobbler, Cheese Head (with everything). I'm not quite sure what makes them so great ... is it just how great bread is or is it the whole combo of ingredients? Even though the sandwich is enough to fill me up, It's hard for me to pass up the cheese soup, which is a bit different that other cheese soups I've had.

    (5)
  • Melissa B.

Oh Monty's how i love thee. Let me count the ways: 1. Best sub EVER=Cheesehead with everything but onions, add black olives please. 2. I love your delicious, soft french bread that is baked fresh daily....mmmmm. 3. "Everything" means lettuce, tomato, onions, italian seasoning, oil, mayo-what a great combo-minus the onions for me. 4. Your cheese soup is a wonderful addition to my cheesy, cheesy sandwich. 5. Your meat sandwiches are pilled high with delicious, fresh deli meat. 6. In high school you were our go to hang out, we managed to get away with a lot (my good friend worked here) and we were always welcome back. 7. I still insist on a trip to Monty's each time I am home. Yum.

    (5)
  • Melissa H.

The best sub I've ever had. I always insist on a Monty's trip when I'm in Springfield. I always get the Gobbler on white with everything but onions. The bread is a good french bread, but soft, which is more amenable to the toppings and doesn't scrape up your mouth. You get twice as much meat here on your sandwich than you would at Subway and they have unique topping here, such as basil, oil, vinegar, etc. that just push the sandwich into greatness. You can't go wrong here!

Best subs in Springfield. The soup is homemade and different everyday. Try anything cheese based, its great and has little pieces of cheese that don't melt. Beefeater with 911 sauce dipped in broccoli cheese soup will kill any hangover.

This is a place that I've gone to since the day it opened. There used to be a Stars and Stripes Video that I rode my bike to all the time. Montys opened when I was 14 and it opened my eyes, stomach, and heart to the power of the sub sandwich. It was our peach pit...it was our home away from home. We knew everyone that worked there and the fact that the workers would smoke grass and then cut their fingers and get blood into the cheese soup added so much flavor and character that the health concerns didn't bother me. Monty's has gone through their ups and downs in terms of quality of meat, lack of employee passion and a very serious and problematic coming and going and then coming again of 911 sauce. When 911 sauce went away and they tried to replace it with that cheap imitation crap I almost threw a brick through the window...but alas...the 911 sauce is back to my delight. They have also brought their meat back to previous standards and the shop is back in my good graces and stands up as one of the best sub shops I've been to. The soups are phenomenal, bread delicious and make sure to spend the extra 50 cents for the Monty's keeper cup. A keeper cup will add sass and sparkle to any culinary collection. I recommend the following order....Gobbler on french or wheat...doesn't matter....everything except onion...add a few black olives...cup of some type of cheese soup...911 sauce on the side and a Monty's keeper cup filled with icy Dr. Pepper. If you sit in the right stool...you just might hear the whisper of delinquent teens howling within the haunted walls of one of Springfield's finest establishments. Enjoy it and go back often.

Wasn't overly impressed at all. The veggie sandwich was very different but was enjoyable. It was like having a salad in between two pieces of warm wheat bread! That was yummy. A great variety of veggies. The turkey, well I am not a huge mayo fan so that kind of explains things.

They just lost me as a customer. HORRIBLE sandwich NOT prepared the way I asked, and about 6 people who were behind me in line got their orders before me. When I asked for a bag since I was buying it to go, they just looked at me funny. This used to be a good place to eat. I'm done.
