I tried it several time and the cook doesn't want to prepare your meal as requested. I like my eggs cooked not runny but the cook does it his own way. Personally I think he's racist.

Sparky's is a little breakfast place I never would've found if it hadn't been for my dad's business nearby. I'll say this now--I am VERY glad that we discovered it because the food is delicious. I'm the biggest fan of breakfast foods and if you're looking for delicious pancakes, bacon, and eggs, I will not hesitate to say Sparky's is my go-to. The place is a little small-looking and you can miss it if you aren't paying attention on the road, but it's got a bar area and then seating further into the building. Service is always very friendly. This last time I went here, I got pancakes, eggs, and a side of bacon (as always). My brother got the ham and cheese melt. My mother got the corned beef hash with toast.

I have never been here before today...but that will change. This place is the kind of place I love, the kind of place that can't be replicated, the kind of place that never remodeled because they never needed too. Let's break it down... Ambiance--It's the kind of joint landscapers hangout at on break. It's working class and fast. Stools that have served thousands still work. The menu is on the wall with those letters that fit into the sign. As you enter a sign that states they support state workers greets you before you either sit down on a stool or go to the fancier room attached. Food-Fast. The Special had a ton of potatoes, eggs, and three links of sausage with white toast. It's really nothing but a ton of food. Go here...support these people.

I went to Sparky's Snack Shop @ 3624 Oakton in Skokie today for breakfast. I have driven by here dozens of times and never noticed it. In fact I had my car at an Auto Body shop 1 block away for work on my car a few years ago. I'm told Sparky's has been there forever, but no one seemed to know exactly when it opened, but from the looks of the interior it looks like a diner from the 50's. The interior is very old a little grubby and not much appeal, but hey I went here because of the 4 1/2 star review on Yelp & for the food & prices. The food was delicious, inexpensive W/huge portions. There seem to be a lot of regulars (which is a good sign) I ordered from the menu board on the wall. I got the skirt steak medium rare and it came that way with the interior still a little red and cooked the way I like it. I also got 3 eggs over easy and hash browns. (The hash browns could have been a little crispier). Overall it was an excellent meal with very friendly wait staff and cook. Thanks to Yelp I was able to find this little gem. I will definitely be back again

This is such a great, tiny, classic grubby diner. It is REALLY grubby, but I find that to be half the charm. The menu is on the wall and like, maybe 2 paper menus, our waitress managed to procure some for us but then took them away, but you don't even need the menu. Just like, any combination of egg/bread/meat, and they will make it. I had a veggie omelet and hashbrowns well done, plus toast. So good! I mean, nothing too creative, but i think we can all agree we secretly prefer nice and simple to fancy and creative, right? Also, they give you a full pot of coffee that they just leave on the table, so you will be well-caffeinated. The only complaint I have, literally just one!, is that they are not open sundays. Sundas are the day on earth I need such a place the most!

While on vacation in Chicago, we stayed in Skokie because we were in a motor home and needed the space to park. We looked on Yelp for a local diner, and made our way to Sparky's, which we of course would never have found on our own! It's out of the way and in a light industrial area, but the ambiance was perfect, and the food was plentiful and good and so fast! While we were there, we sat at the counter and chatted with Gus (the cook), and our waitress. Regulars came in and were served the usual in no time flat. She even refilled our orange juice (my husband was so impressed)! The food was plentiful - I couldn't eat it all - and the price was right. I highly recommend this place for an old fashioned diner breakfast!

My friend, Pam D. calls this her "go to" place for breakfast, and I can see why. It's a classic diner-style restaurant with a lot of counter and a few tables and booths. It's one of those no-frills place, a bit run down, but with a really friendly staff, and great food at reasonable prices. What more could you ask? We all had the breakfast special which (in our case) was three eggs over easy with ham off the bone, and rye toast. It's unusual that we all agree on a meal when we're out, but for some reason the combo appealed to each of us. And it was excellent. The eggs were just right, the potatoes were really, really good, and the ham scratched an itch I didn't even realize I had. Atop a piece of buttered rye toast it was the perfect end to the meal. Good coffee, too, and plentiful. Our waitress was funny and accommodating, and the atmosphere seemed to encourage chat with other tables, which added to the homey feel. This isn't a place for people who like upscale dining. But for a bunch of old farts who have pretty much seen it all, Sparky's is really refreshing.

PERFECT little greasy spoon when you are in the mood! Fast and hot with friendly service. Nothing to look at, but then again, aren't the places withe the best food always a little "dive-y" ...... A+

  • Ba R.

Fantastic little dive. I used to come here back in the '80s for the small-town diner ambience. It still delivers that in spades. My son loves this place. It's fun to say the name, they serve pancakes, they have straws, and they let him use the calculator by the register. The grillman and the waitstaff are straight from central casting. If you like greasy spoons, add this to your list..

Location, location, location. Since the repairs on the parental's coche were to take upwards of 3 hours at the dealership down the road, I was thankful for spotting Sparky's somewhat across from the mini-golf spot (seeking out grub in situations that register on the "it's gonna take awhile" scale is a talent I possess). A dive it is, complete with the menu posted on the wall. I snagged myself a cream of potato soup and BLT with fries well done. Though the soup was less on the creamy side, the BLT did not skimp on any of ingredients and the fries were perfect. Absolutely. Positively. Perfect. Super crispy on the outside and all sortsa fluffy on the inside. Our waitress was a doll. & our food came out in the flashiest of flashes. Hooray for the superhero line cook! We crammed our tummies with food for super cheap. Perhaps I'll volunteer to take the car in for it's next oil change...

My nephew wanted eggs for lunch and I didn't want to go far. I looked up on yelp and saw Sparky. We decided to go there for a quick lunch. It was my first time there. The customers were friendly and the waitress was even friendlier. I ordered their breakfast special, which is only $6.50. The dish came out quickly ,and I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of food that was on my plate. My nephew and I definitely are definitely coming back for more Sparky.

Great old school diner. A little off the beaten path, but it's everything you want in a greasy spoon. I was so impressed the first time I went that I brought my wife back with me the next day. Huge portions for a great price. Nothing fancy- but if you are looking for your next breakfast spot, look no farther. Cash only.

You have to get your breakfast fix here...let Gus show you his breakfast skills....nice place.

We ordered pick up yesterday and I had the corn beef hash. Yum yum yum yum. Their hash browns are the way hash browns are supposed to be made. Gus really is such a nice guy who will literally talk to anyone. The waitress that was there was so sweet and when I arrived my food was ready abd waiting for me. I think I'll be adventurous and try something different next time or maybe even stop by for lunch.

A hole in the wall spot. Great food. Awesome service. I ordered a ham sandwich with eggs, lettuce, pickles, and mayo. I would recommend Sparky's for a lunch budget breakfast.

Love this place fantastic service classic diner menu and the breakfast is GREAT. Happy there are still places like this around but few are still this good. Appreciate they open 5am

Solid diner, what you see is what you get. No surprises no frills, that's how I like my coffee and eggs. Too bad the days of having a cigarette at a diner with coffee are past because this would be my place. If your looking to belly up for breakfast and don't expect culinary greatness or pretentious over priced food this is the place.

  • Christine L.

This is by far my favorite breakfast joint. Don't be discouraged by the short menu on the wall, Gus can whip up almost anything for you. The potatoes are bomb (and I am not a potato girl) and the pancakes taste magical... no syrup needed. Hoping this place stays around forever.

This small, but cute, diner is one in a million! I work across the street and we would all joke around about how Gus' menu is our bible. The breakfast is super quick and amazing! Gus has a pile of hash browns on the side and the grill is always sizzling! The waitresses are super friendly and affable. And the customers are locals who probably have been coming here for decades. Don't expect anything fancy here! It's your old-time comfort food diner with a friendly and cozy atmosphere and an inexpensive menu. My only complaint is that it's not open a little later in the day so I can get some late night grub. But when you have one guy cooking and running the show, you can't blame him for closing early. Come here and enjoy the good, hearty food!

As described in other reviews this is a friendly classic diner with fast service and good food in generous portions. Our breakfast was delivered by Gina within three munutes of our order. It was hot and delicious. And skillfully prepared. The restaurant has the welcoming feeling of a family kitchen. We loved it.

Sparkys is THE BEST place for breakfast and comfort food lunch within 100 miles. Gus is a magician when it comes to breakfast. It's fast. It's good. It's alot of food. It's a place out of a 1950's time machine. Sit at the counter and become a regular after just eating here once or twice. Grab a Sun-Times (copies just laying on the counter), a bottomless cup of coffee, friendly banter with your super friendly waitresses Sue or Gina and watch Gus do his thing! Don't be afraid to order the best skirt steak and eggs in town. Or a double meat monster omelet. Or a ham and eggs where the ham was just cut off the bone! This is a place that reeks character and characters. Gus is part chef, part psychiatrist, part zen master, and always a good friend to the many who eat at his counter day after day, year after year. Give it a try. Parking is free in the front or the rear and it's right off McCormick blvd on Oakton, just past the Subaru dealer. Go with an appetite and get ready to find your new favorite place!

Sparky's! Eggs cooked in butter on a flattop grill- check! Ham fresh off the bone- check! Fantastic hotcakes- check! Anonymous, just right, diner coffee- check! Friendly, warm waitresses and a short order cook (and owner) named Gus- check! HUGE portions- check! Low prices- small check! This place has it all, if you know what I'm talkin' about. Tiny, nondescript, plain as they come and well worth going out of your way for. Try it. Best, Peter O. (h/t Pam D.)

There is no debate - the best breakfast in Skokie is here at Sparky's Snack Stop. With a great menu and blazing fast service, you can't go wrong with anything while Gus is on the grill. My favorites include pancakes, the perfect fried egg and well-done hash browns. The prices are all very reasonable/borderline inexpensive and the atmosphere is a great mix of families, local workers and die-hard fans of this classic diner. You won't leave disappointed or hungry. Everyone from the staff to customers is super friendly and I always look forward to coming back. Skokie is fortunate to have this gem.

Always and forever, my favorite place for breakfast. High maintenance fuss-butts, stay away. This is for real meat, eggs and tater folks. We were here this morning with some friends and had a great time. Gus even made Mickey Mouse pancakes for the two little girls. They loved it!!! I love Sparky's !!!!!

For years, we've driven past this joint and never considered stopping in for a meal because of its ... um, appearance. Well, it took just one visit here to convert us into loyal fans. My advice is, don't be put off by the "decor!" Gus and his crew are super-friendly and efficient, and they'll make you feel welcome. Their straightforward diner food ain't gourmet, but everything we've ordered here has been fresh and well prepared, and served in hearty portions. The wallet-friendly menu prices will astound you.

So, ok, it's a diner. And gets 5 stars as a diner, not a Michelin starred restaurant. That said, this is one of the very best diners I'be eaten at, in many years of diner-diving. First, the waitress couldn't have been more friendly, nor more unobtrusively attentive. Second, 3 eggs, 5 slices of bacon, some wicked good potato pancake-like homefries, and pretty good commercial type rye toast accompanied some fine coffee, and all perfectly cooked. So there's that. And lastly, two of us ate for less than $15.00. Does it get better than that? Not in my world. Highly recommend.

I took a star away because he should be opened more hours. I would have liked to have gone there in the evenings. Gus is an awesome guy. When I get tired of being health conscience, I go see him. He makes THEEEE BEST hashbrowns around. He has a full menu. Hard to chose what you want sometimes because he has so much on his menu. I love his waitress Sue. She has such wonderful hospitality. Gina is a little lazy. She likes to sit in a booth all day and only gets up when she absolutely has to. BUT, she is very friendly. I will give her that. I send a lot of people there, and will continue. I love Sparkys!!!! It will be a sad day when Gus retires. He will be greatly missed. Nobody makes beacon like Gus does too. He makes real beacon too, its not that fake paper thin crap you find everywhere else.

The open time is wrong. It's open at 5am and it's damn good! Classic DIVE! Ham off the bone. Be warned, all omelets come with cheese. Excellent breakfast sandwiches!

Our campaign phone bank hub was nearby, and this was literally the only food within walking distance. This place is unbelievably old school. It's like a time warp. I just got my food to go, but I remember that several things i asked for weren't available - just like, oh we aren't doing that today, sorry. Unfortunate. I got a cheeseburger, but I think they couldn't give me fries for some reason so I got hashbrowns - which were incredibly greasy. They forgot to put cheese on the burger, which also got incredibly greasy, and basically fell apart in my hands before much time had passed. Nothing special about it.

This run down diner looks like it was an old gas station. They mentioned they recently redecorated. By the looks of it, I would have never guessed, it still looked old and run down. The place was half filled with old timers who are regulars who seem to sit there all day, razzing the servers and watching the comings and goings of this joint. I think these geezers have been coming here since they were teenagers - that is how old this place appears. I wouldn't call this place spic-n-span was it was clean enough for this type of establishment and it easily over looked by the friendliness of the staff, even the cooked waved his spatula "hi" as we entered. There are no menus; the food they serve is on 70's lettering boards one would find in concession stands. Ordered the breakfast special which is 3 eggs, hash browns, toast and choice of meat was only $6.50 and completely filled a 12" dinner plate. The pancakes are really good here as they are a bit on the thinner side then most but have that wonderful griddle taste to them. We were in and out in less than 40 minutes and absolutely stuffed for the next few hours. I am totally coming back here again for their cheap, no-frills food over and over again!

  • Cynthia E.

If I could give 4.5 I would, with the only half point going to the semi-uncleanliness of this place. But the hash browns- OMG. And 3eggs-you know you will not need lunch when you come here for breakfast. The ham off the bone is to die- save a piece of your toast so you can make a sandwich! The sausage is great, the pancakes are good, and they have raisin toast! The service is SO fast- with Gus cooking, and you can watch everything this griddle artist does. The servers are chatty and remember everyone. Go early- this place gets packed!

This place is a dive! A dive with character. The good points are: the friendly staff, customers seem to be regulars for years, hyper fast service, flavorful but not hot home made hotsauce and decent food. The downsides are: the coffee is for shit except that it does vaguely taste like coffee and has caffeine, the Denver omlette has some sort of orange chem cheese instead of real cheese and they are cash only.

Let me tell you that the food here is wonderful. Sparky's is only open for breakfast and lunch but no matter what you order it will be good and filling. Ask Gus for a special order if you don't see something on the menu that strikes your fancy. He has great home cooked lunch specials during the week. Sit at the counter to watch the cooking action - Gus is a Master at the grill - or in the dining room to relax and read the paper or chat with friends. Say hi to the staff, a friendly bunch.

Great little dive amid Skokie's light industrial strip. Fast, friendly service makes this a great quick place to fill up for the day or kill a hangover. If they were open late at night, I'd be there constantly, but alas it's usually only Saturday mornings.
