This place is fantastic. Very comfortable. They always have "the game" on. Food is hot, fresh and delish! Some of their new offerings are amazing, too.

A very casual diner with very solid diner fair. A wide selection including all the Chicagoland basics from Italian Beefs, to sausages, gyros, Reuben's & hot pastramis. The large selection can be daunting to the indecisive but it's inexpensive enough where you can try several things without worry. There's a lot of seating and a few arcade games in back to make it a popular place for families but also still enjoyable for the general public. Nothing fancy here, but it's true no frills diner fair done right.

My family from Chicago suggested this place because they know I love my Greek style food. I came here and had a very good conversation with the owner. Opened for 40 years which is just amazing knowing how hard it is to open places like this. I tried a couple of things and that we're all amazing. The service is fast and the arcade section of the place is just nice knowing how old they have been opened. They have so many choices to choose from. This place reminded me of home. Can't wait to come back in town to try this place again. I suggest this over all those other bad Greek places.

Used to take Long Lunch breaks from Martin Luther King Elementary School 2 blocks away, on the regular, and walk over here and grind. One time they caught me or wanted to teach me a lesson. They gave me a pop math test with geometry n calculus. That was a big mistake on thy part, perfect score n then I just hung out in the work shop n showed up for math test days. I made myself wooden dj crates. I always had a double dog Chicago classic n Chedder fries.

This family owned business is one of my most favorite places to eat with my boys. We have been coming here for years and it never ceases to amaze how they can calculate your bill so fast without he help of a registered for calculator! Scott and Craig are great! The variety of food is killer! Great place for take out or dine in!

If I see something crazy on a menu, I have to get it. It's an addiction, a calling, it's just something I must always do. So when I saw a grilled cheese burger on the menu, my tiny mouth be damned, that baby was going right in it. I lived in Skokie for a few years and my boyfriend at the time would pick us up food from Herm's every now & then. I remembered liking it but wasn't sure to what extent. When I recently went in, it made me remember why I missed living in Skokie so much - so many independent food places like this run by good people with good food. On my latest visit I had the monstrosity of insanity that is the Grilled Cheese burger for $9.60 (that includes fries & coleslaw). This burger does not have buns on the outside, oh no no! It has two buttery ooey gooey grilled cheeses with a half pound burger snuggled between them. I took one bite and it was like the pearly gates opened up and let down a drawbridge letting me in. Such an indulgent meal is not an every day type of dinner, but I enjoyed it greatly as a special treat. It's just like three sandwiches in one so it probably won't surprise you to know that I couldn't finish it all - it made a couple of meals for me. Herm's Palace is full of overindulgent items that I could ramble on about all day. Or if you are on some kind of lame-o diet-o, they got you covered with salads-o. Service is friendly and they treat everyone like a long lost family member. Inside the shop are a few arcade games but the coolest part of the casual eating establishment is the artwork on the wall. It's this crazy mural that includes the owners and a bunch of random Chicago celebrities. My friend and I had a fun time going through and identifying who was who and mad props to any place with Chicago pride because it's deep in my heart, too. Chi Town baby! Bonus: They have beer!

Plain chicken sandwich with tomato and lettuce and a bit of mayo. Was the best thing I've had in a while. Nice little multicolored packet of fries on the side. Order at the counter and they bring food to you. I bussed my own table (picked up some spilled lettuce) and got a mild scolding! The guys really take care of you here. Gave me customer copy of the receipt and wouldn't let me leave a tip--is that right? I feel indebted to this place. Probably means I have to keep eating here to make up the difference

Skeptical at first. The guys up front are super friendly. The environmental is like mid 90s local hot dog joint with arcades and TVs [not a first date spot]. You order food then sit down, then they bring the food to you. It's a bit confusing at first but still very cool. I ordered the Grilled Cheese Burger, the Grilled Jumbo Hot Dog, and Cheese Fries. 5 Stars for The Hot Dog, 3 Stars on The Burger. After 3 bites, the unseasoned burger becomes dull. It lacks flavor and it's $9.85. The cheese fries are standard. Overall, great service but this place has a hit or miss menu. It definitely deserves a revisit though.

Grilled Cheese Cheeseburger! This was good and big. Great grilled cheese sandwiches wrapped around a burger patty. It was juicy and full of flavor. The fries were good. They are the skinny type. The meal also came with coleslaw. This was one of the best coleslaw's I've ever had. The place was clean and had a lot of tables. They also have a few video games. The people were really nice. They brought the food right to the table. They do have bicycle parking in front, be it one of those old tire bender racks, but it was nice to see the effort. I will return again!

For the indulgent foodie or the junk food addict, this is the place. Since I have lived in the city some 30 years ago until now, the food is the same and service is super friendly. They have added a few new items to their menu like the Grilled cheese Burger which is so decadent! I stick to the old regular cheeseburger, fried mushrooms and cheesy fries and it's already so filling, I can't imagine getting through a 1/2 pound burger with 2 grilled cheese sandwiches! The grandkids enjoy the few arcade games they have in the restaurant and my husband enjoys the multitude of televisions they have in the joint. Check out the menu, it's sure to please.

Went to this place by mistake and I will say it was the best mistake I ever made . I was watching tv and seen a fried hotdog and I wished I could get 1and poof like a miracle walking into this place I seen it on the menu ! I ordered the hotdog with pastrami along with Mac & Cheese puffs ( outstanding) . Friendly staff and great food so good I went back twice in the same day . Herms Place is a must if you are in the Skokie area .

Get the jumbo grilled dog with all the Chicago toppings . Great casual atmosphere, there is ample seating but sometime we just get take out. The food is fresh and cooked to order. I've tried several items and keep coming back! Try it you won't be disappointed

That T bone steak sandwich with a side of cheese Kurds is the best in the business. Everything we try always hits the spot. Freshly made. Fresh tasting. Glad I live just a few short minutes away.

Our favorite next door hamburger place. Very welcoming atmosphere and the guys are always friendly. If you want a relaxed hang out spot with great food, or if you wanna go out and watch sports with your buddies, I'd definitely recommend this place. Great food, great service. What else can I say?

Y'all know I love a hotdog, and Herm's is TOPS. I am so excited to add it to our regular hotdog dinner rotation. Just a few standouts: MILKSHAKES. the smalls are enormous. Split yours with a child, perhaps. HOTDOGS. they are cut spiral? and kinda crunchy? and fat but not overwhelming, with perfectly steamed buns. nice sized pickle. FRIES. well, fries are just normal, but you can get them with merkts cheddar, which takes them to amazing. SALADS. yes I had a salad at a hotdog stand bc I am a sucker for a good greek salad, and this one did not disappoint. If you love giant chunks of feta and tons of kalamata olives, this is the salad for you. ICE CREAM CASE. there are frozen bananas. and choco tacos. and king cones. A king cone and a hot dog, plus a (pepsi, ugh, but they do have dr. pepper) drink from the fountain or a coke (yay!) or cel-ray (i love any shop that sells cel-ray) from the cold drink case and I'm a happy place. The decor is standard hotdog shop, but with plenty of tables and an awesome mural. Plus, there are a few arcade games if you are a slow eater and need something to entertain your 7 year old so you can finish your salad in peace. And the staff is probably the friendliest ever. Herm's, I'm so glad to know you, and I'm excited to have a long relationship together.

I luckily work next to this place just about a block down, so I can walk there to feed my new found addiction. First time going I assumed it was going to be like your regular "hot dog and burger place" but you walk in to a pretty decent sized, loud, easy going lunch place. The two brothers greet you right away as you yell out your order to them. They holler to the cooks in the back who confirm it right back, all by memory. How? We don't know, but they've never gotten my order wrong. I somehow always get tricked into getting fries, simply because they ask and they're too great for me to say no. Everything is fresh, they have prices memorized! Sometimes you don't even pay until you've finished eating and you're walking out of the door. Unheard of now a days. I am motivated to try everything on the menu, but so far I have tried their turkey burger (delicious, and HUGE), cheese fries (shoestring and the bomb), chicken fingers (classic and tasty), gyro (too much gyro meat, which is never an issue), and their chocolate milkshake (yes please), and their tuna sandwich (this was my least favorite, as I thought their tuna salad was too sweet, but I'm not going to take away a star for personal preference). Who knows what I will have next, but I'm sure I'll find out today and I'll love it. Please give this place a try, you will NOT regret it.

If I wasn't starting my diet this new year, I would have lunch from this place at least twice a week. Luckily I didn't discover it until just recently when a coworker suggested we have it for lunch. I had their 1/2 pound Herm's Special. It is basically a patty melt, but with all of the trimmings. It was good. The fries were just ok...nothing spectacular but the burger was juicy, greasy (in a good way), and cooked perfectly.

My partner in crime and I are on the hunt for the perfect dog. It just so happens that one of our hunts led us to Skokie last weekend, and it was DELICIOUS. We came to learn about Herm's Palace from "Unique Eats" on the Cooking Channel. The episode in question was on the evolution of the hot dog. (You may ask yourself: "She watches shows about hot dogs?" - Yes, yes I do.) We were greeted by a friendly man, and were told to have a seat after placing our orders. We were confused that we didn't pay up front, but after the meal. While we waited for our food, we watched the staff work and the opening ceremony of the 2014 Winter Olympics. Even though it was freezing and there was hardly a crowd at the place, the bus boys were busting their humps, cleaning anything and everything. They were so polite, asking if we needed anything other than drinks etc.. When our food did come, they periodically came back to our table to make sure everything was up to our standards. We were taken aback by the sincere concern from our servers. It was so refreshing, that we wanted to leave a tip bigger than we normally would have, only to be told that the didn't accept them. We had ordered two "Grilled Jumbo Dogs" Chicago style with a split order of french fries. Our eyes became the size of saucers as we looked at what they called a "small fry." It was anything but! But oh so delcious! The fries tasted hand cut and fresh, with the perfect amount of salt. Our grilled jumbo dogs were perfect. A large size dog that had been scored, so that it appeared twisted was topped with fresh ingredients and nestled in a sesame seed bun. You could taste the meaty juices that had flowed into each nook and cranny of that juicy dog. Mixing and mingling with fresh onions, tomatoes slices etc. .Mmmm, man was it good!

Good place to get some grub!! They make you feel at home and the good comes pretty fast and it's really hot! I lived in the area but I always ignored it. I gave it a try and it turned out to be really good! Great staff and service! Every time I go there I order a gyros cheeseburger, an Italian beef with hot peppers and small cheese fries.

Friendly family run joint with some awesome jumbo char dogs. Spiral cut and charred on the grill to crispy juicy perfection. I also really liked their cheddar burgers... beefy cheesy deliciousness. They also serve gyros, mexican, sandwiches, pasta, and a whole lot more. I'll for sure be back for another jumbo char dog!

A nice greek Gyro place that has spacious eating area. The service was a little slow and they can maybe think of adding to the staff especially on weekends. Aside from that the food was good and I would go again.

Tasty! Clearly Herm's cares about the quality of their food. In a way they have to because there is a lot of competition close by. Great for kids, my 6yr old LOVED the play til you win claw grab arcade game. She was smiling ear to ear when she finally grabbed something on the 20th attempt. I'm glad the food is good bc I know she will be asking to go back.

Awesome classic place and atmosphere.. great quality food in a family owned and ran setting that my young kid approves of and highly recommends, great for bigger partys too. What more could I ask for. I highly recommend steak sandwiches and herm's special is very original and very tasty wrapped in brown paper like the old days.

Nice little diner-style joint that is easy to overlook. I stopped by just to get an order of cheese fries since one of my friends recently posted a picture of it on facebook, and I wanted something to munch on in the office. The cheese fries were pretty tasty and the order was huge (especially for $4). Would I order it again? Probably not--but there are lots of items on the menu that seemed worthwhile to try when I come back. The owners were very welcoming and friendly. Kudos to them.

I have officially found my new at-work lunchtime guilty pleasure. I do have to admit that when my friend at the office said "lets order from Herm's Palace" I was quite leery. For whatever reason the name just does not sound appealing to me what so ever, but since we were starving and sick of everything else in the area, I pulled up the menu and started to browse. Immediately I was greeted with an explosion of home style American fast food choices. Perfect. Not that I need to, but I do tend to indulge. Major plus - delivery is super fast and prices are unbeatable. So I have since tried several things on their menu, and can't say that I have a negative thing to say about any single item. Try the fish sandwich with pickles and mozzarella sticks, it's my new fave crave.

Great hotdog/burger place on Dempster. Has a very family-oriented feel to it in the way it's run. Chedder burger is great, hot dog was great, chili cheese fries were really awesome. Reasonable prices too. An establishment to be proud of.

I just had the best ribeye steak sandwich of my life. If I didn't have an emergency bathroom stop, I would have never stumbled on this gem. Also-- the cheese on the cheese fries are generous. Not some cup on the side. The fries are slathered in it. How cheese fries should be. I don't know why some places are cheapskates with their cheese on their cheese fries. It boggles my mind.

Let's See where to start I am now 21 Years old, and I have been coming here since I was probably 5. As I have grown so has my appetite. No matter what I order, it is cooked to perfection. But no matter what you order, you have to get a side of broccoli puffs, they are just amazing. I think it is offensive to call Herms Palace a fast food joint, because it is not.. Just because they have burgers, hot dogs, and fries on their menu, does not make them fast food. McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's; those are fast food joints. Get it right people! Herm's Palace is a family owned restaurant, that is history in the making when it comes to Skokie. This place is not just a hot dog stand, it's a family restaurant where they make everyone that comes in feel like they are part of their family. Honestly if you want the kind of service that will leave a smile on your face, your tummy full, but still wanting more, and your family more than gratified, Go to Herms. Trust me, I went to culinary school, I have had 5 star cuisine, Herm's is still at the top of my list when it comes to the best food I have eaten. Whether it is the chopped steak salad, jumbo chard hot dog, cheeseburger, chicken basil sandwich, the list can go on until I finish the menu because everything is that exquisite. Your Hungry? - Go to Herms Want to watch the game?- Go to Herms Keep the kids occupied? Mini arcade in the back- Go to Herms Wanna see some amazing Chicago history art?- Go to Herms Want the warmest welcome?!?!- Go to Herms Want to see a human calculator? Go to Herms Do you want to be able to walk in the door, and have your order memorized; so that next time you come it will already be on the grill before you order? - GO TO HERMS! Yours truly, Jake Weiss

Best Jumbo Char-Dog in Cook County. There is nothing not to enjoy at Herm's Palace - from the friendly service, to the relaxing atmosphere and of course the huge and delicious menu. Craig and Scott will always greet you with a smile and you don't even have to clean up after you are done eating. I've enjoyed chili. cheddar burgers, salads, pizza puffs and a lot more - all delicious and perfectly prepared. I know that there is a lot of competition in the area for american type of food/hot dogs and this is even more so on Dempster in Skokie, but Herm's Palace stands out above the rest and is without a doubt the best.

This place has it all. They have an extensive menu with something for everyone. It is a hot dog/hamburger and fries kind of place but have very creative burgers and sandwiches and salads. I almost always get the Greek salad with gyros meat on it and it never disappoints. It is a family business that is run by a mother and her 2 sons and they are very warm and friendly and try to remember your preferences if you are a frequent visitor which is a really warm touch.

I would love to give this place five stars but can't I will say I have been coming here for years and they have always been great to me. I come in and they know what I want even if I have not been in there in months (been getting the same thing for years) I will always go back but the only problem is even though I get the same thing every time the price is always different because they do it in there head so I would suggest going there for good for and good service.

Large sit down area, parking, and friendly staff. Got my first time order to go - went off their special board for the brisket sandwich (w/fries and slaw) for $9 and got their grilled jumbo. Great brisket sandwich but average grill dog, fries, and slaw. Still I give them 4 stars for their wide variety menu that still satisfies a range of moods and tastes.

Today was our second visit to Herm's Palace. We stopped on the way to see a film. I was torn between a 3 and 4 star rating because there were some things that were less than perfect, but then other things were wonderful. I had a hot dog, Chicago style of course. It was decent, but the hot dog seemed like it had been steaming a bit long. I also had the broccoli puffs based on suggestions here. I had in my mind something like a pizza puff but with broccoli, but they are small almost like poppers and have cheese in them as well. They were quite good. Christopher had the Buffalo-Bacon-Cheddar Burger and that was seriously yum! It is a half pound burger served on a pretzel roll with buffalo sauce. They give you ranch dressing on the side. It is a HUGE burger and really tasty!!!!!! Their slaw is good and the fries are typical of most fast food joints. I love how the guys behind the counter never write anything down and do everything in their heads. I love that they have both coke and Pepsi products, as I am a major diet coke junkie. So nice to get what I want. Also in their little arcade area, they have the legendary pinball game Theater of Magic. What more can I say? Well, obviously I can say one more thing. The restaurant itself is wheelchair accessible, but the bathrooms are in the basement.

I love coming to Herm's. The food is always good, I can honestly say for the years I've been eating here not once have I had a bad experience. I usually sit and knit while I wait for my food and when it's ready they always "whenever you're ready" not trying to rush me and let me finish my row no matter how busy they are. I totally appreciate things like that.

The beef sandwiches were pretty hefty and loaded with thinly sliced beef. They did not charge for peppers and they piled them on, so that was good. The beef could have used more herbs and spices tho. The fries were pricey for what you get, thin stringy fresh frozen. A place like this needs to have fresh cut fries, not the cheap frozen variety.

When you go to a family owned hot dog joint and they know your order when you walk in, it just makes you feel great! This is the kind of place Herms is. If you go their a lot they will get to know you and your order. I grew up down the street from Herms and its hands down the best grill in the area. This is my food of choice when I come back and visit my parents. My favorites: Gyros Burgers FRIES!

The food here is great! The guys at work for lunch have been ordering this almost every friday and they reccomended I try the grilled double cheeseburger. That was one of the best burgers i have ever had!! Oh and I also reccomend the mac and cheese bites!

I LOVE herms. They have a huge variety and everything tastes good. The owners are the nicest people and make you feel like you're at home when you're there. Turkey burger is the best i've had. usually all turkey burgers are dry, but theirs is just so juicy and delicious! their burgers and dogs and also top notch. Chicken and fish sandwiches there are also mighty good. Herms is a great restaurant that has a option for everyone!

  • Carmen B.

I would rate the food a 3 but since I absolutely love the guys that work there I give it a 4. I can walk in there after having a cranky customer put me in a cranky mood and they snap me out of it. That's just the kind of place it is. And even though they don't "know" me, they still recognize me whenever I come in. Leans a bit towards the pricey side for what you get but again the service is worth it. I always take my food to go but from what I've seen while waiting for my order, it is very clean. I've had (and enjoyed) their turkey polish, bacon cheeseburger, cheese fries, gyro plate, chicken tenders, vanilla milkshakes, and the broccoli cheddar bites are awesome. Stop by if you are in the area!

You know that movie, "A Beautiful Mind" with Russell Crow. Well, when you go into Herm's and try to figure out what the hell is on the menu, it is kinda like trying to decipher some secret code. Observe the customers when they come in, as they look up at the menu board and at the posters spewed throughout. You can immediately tell the non-regulars, the long stare and some have actually been seen cocking their head, similar to when a dog hears a high pitched sound. There are so many choices offered at this hot dog stand that it goes way beyond the modern day definition of what a hot dog stand might mean. Not only does the customer have to figure out what is on the menu, then they have to decide amongst all those choices. Even for those that have an idea of what they want, double checking to confirm that it is on the menu may become a challenge. After saying all of that, ordering at Herm's is a no brainer for me, I can always depend on getting a perfect Chicago Seven hot dog. They have certainly not forgotten their roots that they are first and foremost a hot dog stand. I honestly can't comment on anything else on their menu, no desire to get anything else. They recently remolded, it just looks like a cleaner shit-hole, at least for now. Nothing done behind the counter, fading and grease stains still persist. Gone from the outside is the tacky red and yellow vertical strips, just an unappealing version of yellow now. However, the inside still has that red and a lot of it. And if you are into those murals that are found at quite a few stands now, you'll find a whole wall of famous Chicagoans that are mostly from sports. Looking towards the center of this plentiful, but mediocre done masterless piece, you'll find the trifecta of owners, the two sons and mom. Kinda of interesting that no props are given to the Hermster that started it all, wtf. Speaking about Herm, the way I heard it is that he sold the original place. Talk about in your face and having balls, he then opened up this place with an altered name across the street. Trust me, this is not a palace and the boys are more of the red and yellow barbarian type than from blue blood royalty. You got it, the customers followed Herm to the new location and the former stand went belly up. On some level this trivial piece of information is worth mentioning, they are the only hot dog stand that I know of that you have to go into the basement to use the facilities. Sorry, no elevator and Underdogg's doesn't count.

This review is strictly based on my Italian Beef experience. Went here for the first time after hearing some good things about the Italian Beef. Got there and ordered an Italian beef, dipped, with sweet peppers. It might have been the worst IB sandwich I've ever had. Beef was oddly dry and lacked any kind of seasoning. I have never had a IB so bland before. It was almost as if they sliced plain cooked beef and quickly dunked it in jus before serving. And the sweet peppers had an unpleasant half cooked taste that compounded the problem. At least now I don't have to wonder if Herms' IB any good or not.

I love Herms :) Recommendations- Gyros burger (ask for well done gyros meat), Buffalo Bacon Cheddar Burger on the pretzel roll (to die for) or their amazing corn dogs. I grew up with this place and will forever love this place as my home town favorite.

I've been coming here the past 4 years or so for lunch and can't say enough good things about Herms. Their corned beef sandwich/reubens are great, chicken foccacia sandwich is good, fried cheddar cheese cubes are great. The owners are a great family of mother and two sons that are very nice and get to you know as you keep going there. I haven't tried too many things on the menu because I seem to stick to the stuff I like, but I don't think you should have a hard time finding something you'll enjoy at Herms.

This place has been in business for years. The food is pretty good and service is very fast. Burgers and hot dogs are great. Anything fried there is good as well, but then again, anything that's fried is good period. I haven't been in there since they've renovated but it looks a lot better from the outside. They deliver now!

Herm's Palace has had extensive renovations made to the building. The carpet was removed and ceramic tile was installed. New thermopane windows replaced single-pane glass. The ugly paintings were removed and the walls were redone in wainscot paneling and paint. As always, Marla, the owner is a joy who makes you feel like you're a guest at her own home. The menu is extensive--perhaps too extensive. The food is good, not great.

Best hot dog and cheese fries in skokie/evanston if not the best in the city. Great dogs, burgers, beefs , gyros. Anything you get here you are gonna love. Great family too!

Been eating at Herm's since about 1989, and their service and good is still just as good as it was then. Friendly staff, good food, and a comfortable environment all make it a place worth eating at if a burger and fries is what you're looking for.

Went here for the first time last week with a Chicago-dog connoisseur. It was a toss up between here and Poochie's, chose Herm's based on the ample seating since we had several in our group. We had a fairly complicated order, adding things on in an "Oh yeah ... and one of these..." fashion, and nothing was written down. Order was correct and came out with a smile. I'm told the hot dog was great. Fries are standard; not fresh cut or anything. I had a fish sandwich, on par with a Filet O'Fish and broccoli puffs. Loved them! Cheesy nuggets of goodness, even if they were fried 'til a little too dark. Service was very friendly and ol' school in terms of collecting payment without any great rush, etc. Although it's not exactly the same type of menu as nearby Hub's or Dengeo's, I liked it much more. Nice assortment of video games and a Star Wars pinball machine. I'll be back!

my dad has been taking me to herm's palace since 1990 (or earlier). it's 4 of 5 stars only because their decor is ... nondescript. the chicken patty, with a touch of mayo and served on a sesame seed bun, is AWESOME. pair it with an oatmeal cookie and it's even more amazing. the chili is homemade and delish and my sisters love the hotdogs and burgers there. great place for a quick bite or father's day celebration!

I refrained from giving Herm's the five star treatment, even though I have probably eaten more burgers and fries here than anywhere else in my life. Since I was a youth, I have eaten here, watched the interior design change a few times, and still remember which arcade games once stood in the back. So many memories. Yet the food isn't incredible(although the fries are DAMN good), but instead it was about this place as a whole that I recall it fondly. I still go here from time to time, hanging on to a thread of nostalgia from my younger days. And that's what I love about this place. Go Saints.

While far from a Palace, this place is great. I ate there for years when I worked down the street in Skokie and quickly made this a regular hang out. I love the fact they never write anything down and just figure out your price in their head no matter what you order. And to be honest, their math is different every time, but it is all good cause it is good food and regardless of the mixed math, always a good value. Great place for a quick dog or sandwich.

If you are looking for some serious chili cheese fries, a tasty dog with all the fixin's, and a good dose of nostalgia for arcade games of yesteryear, this is your spot. Standing unobtrusively on one side of the road in a lovingly worn red shack, Herm's turns out all manner of line-cooked foods, with an amiable, funny guy behind the counter who adds up your bill in his head, complete with tax (the cash register definitely had some dust on it). I absolutely adore Ben's Chili Bowl in DC, and while I can assure you that Ben's half smoke has nothing to worry about, Herm's fries have edged into first place. Herm's gives you perfectly crispy straws covered in a mildly spicy chili and some kind of miracle cheddar cheese sauce, and invites you to devour the whole basket using your fingers or a handy fork. It didn't matter that I was full; I had to finish them. Then they asked me if I wanted an ice cream to go.

Herm's rocks. The in-person experience is great for the math party trick, but to find out that they deliver on this cold, Sunday night when I need a char-cheddar fix, is music to my ears! Always a great spot to take the kids, but bring quarters for the arcade games. I'm sure they have healthier options on the menu, but when I'm in the mood for Herm's, it's not healthy I'm looking for.

Herm's Palace is the real deal. The owners are fantastic. They've been serving my whole family with a smile since I was a little kid. Now I'm bringing my wife and little girl here, and getting the same welcoming experience. Herm's is a timeless restaurant where you can watch your family grow. That sounds cheesy, yes, but it's true. The food - if you like this kind of food, then you'll love Herm's. The regular Chicago fare is spot on. And I beg you to try the Broccoli Puffs... they're an under-appreciated item on the menu that you can't find anywhere else. Broccoli puffs! Give 'em a shot! And as a bonus, watch Scott total your order, no matter how large or complex, completely in his head. He's a human calculator. No cash register necessary.

I've been coming here since I was a kid! Great family run restaurant!! The food is great!! The prices are as well!! The staff is incredible!! BTW...the hot dogs are TRUE Chicago style hot dogs!!

Herm's is a Northshore institution offering delicious food and a family atmosphere. My personal favorite is a polish and cheese fries but I was amazed that they now offer a turkey option (healthier maybe?). The owners are open to suggestions and remember your last orders. It's my favorite Chicago hot dog stand.

If you are looking for a greasy spoon this is the place to go. This place has been around for as long as I can remember. They have great burgers and fries. A couple video games in the back helps waste time as you wait for your order to come up. Good prices and a parking lot. Also watch the owner add your bill - In his head!!! Amazing.

Oh Herm's...how I love thee. This is a totally great place. We love their Italian beef and cheese fries. Yum. The two guys who work behind the counter (they're brothers I think) never need to write anything down, they add up your bill in their head and they have never gotten an order wrong. Highly recommended!

Herm's Palace is a Skokie institution. Been in the same spot for far longer than anyone can remember, the bright red shack has been a staple of those cruising down Dempster for decades. The first thing you'll notice when you go into Herm's is that although there is a cash register, it's very rarely *used*. The guys working behind the counter have been doing the job so long that they have all the prices memorized and can add them lightning quick with tax; definitely a neat trick to see! Although Herm's does have other good items on its menu, what you really want to go here for is a jumbo char dog. Or two. :) Spirally sliced and thrown on the grill, it's virtues are that it's a super *quality* hot dog prepared very well. You'll immediately go home and try and reverse engineer it! Herm's fries are nothing to write home about, and the cheese on their cheese fries is again nothing special. But that dog, mmMMMmmmmmm!

    (4)
  • Steve O.

Ditto almost everything George said. Except, I love the fries. And I get the beefs here. If you think your town is cool and Skokie isn't, then stop by here and try to figure out why your town doesn't have a place like this.

Normal hot dog/burger joint- delicious. What makes it stand out is the service. Asked if there was a tip jar and the answer was "No its our pleasure." Blown away by that- need more family places with that attitude. Food was made very quickly even with a couple orders a head of mine. I'm curious about those broccoli puffs though! Deff coming back when in the area again. Love the Chicago everything in there! Thanks for the great food!

I have never gone to this place before a couple days ago. My family would always dismiss it because Poochie's is so close. But I finally got them to break away from the norm and try Herm's. I'm glad we did. Everyone enjoyed their meals and the menu is far more extensive than Poochie's. We enjoyed an Italian sub, grilled chicken caesar pita, chicken tenders and fries and mozzarella sticks. Not to say that Poochie's is off our list, but if we are feeling something other than hotdogs and burgers, we will definitely be coming back to herm's. Plus, the service is splendid. The owners are amazing! And they serve beer, added bonus. I can't vouch for herm's hotdogs, but i'd still recommend you try it out!

Super friendly family vibe! I have been going here since I was a kid and still love going to get a hot dog when I am around. They have 1,000 choices and serve beer & wine. Really can't beat it for a quick meal or even to watch a game.

First time here so I asked what to get. Best grilled Chicago dog I have ever eaten. Cold beer and fries finished it off. Will differently be back. Great service and atmosphere.

Okay, all of the hype about the grilled-cheese burger is well deserved. As much as this sounds like food injected with pure lard, it actually is not overwhelming. Granted the portion size is not for the faint of heart. The sandwich had fresh veggies in it, relish, pickle and peppers on the side. The burger patty was not too greasy, and neither were the two grilled cheese sandwiches wrapped around it. Very memorable. Next time I'm going to try the combo Italian beef and sausage. The only reason I didn't give them five stars is because the last time I came, the gyro I had was not that memorable. So I averaged the two meals out, 3 and 5. Maybe I will revise my rating on my third visit. The staff were very courteous and attentive. They don't write anything down, and bill you after you eat. Mental math is all they use. This place is a treasure, very easy to overlook. Forget the other fast food places until you have at least tried Herm's Palace.

I'm a vegetarian and they're veggie burgers are amazing! I rarely go there but they still remember my order almost exactly, and they add up the total of your bill in their heads. They're very nice and accommodating. The prices are decent.

Dude, this place RULES. Ive never come to a restaurant and felt like family, until i came to herms. You are greeted when you walk in and if you frequent the joint, These guys rember your name and your order almost always. They have freakish memories. You will see. Wish more places were like this.

C'mon in here and get something good, which isn't hard to do, as everything on the menu is delectable. I have been coming here for about 17 years, maybe longer. And its always been the same. Same dude taking your order who looks like stone cold Steve Austin and Steve Wilkos had a baby. His name is Scott, he will never write anything down, he will spit back your order at you backwards adding random numbers and come up with a total that you cannot refute. Then shout the order into the kitchen. But you pay later. I recco: Shakes Cheddar Burger Steak Sandwich Polish Sausage Pretty much everything I had a rough day today, Scott wasnt in, but his brother was. I remember back in the day his brother stood behind Stone Cold Scott Wilkos and would watch intently his brother every move and listen to every speaking in tongue twister order. He did the thing with the numbers at the end, brought out my steak sand and I felt good. Comfort food, Skokie has it in spades.

Delicious. I ordered take out because my friends who live downtown wanted some. Cheeseburgers were amazing. The appetizers, mac and cheese bites and onion rings, were golden and crispy. Clearly made to order. Next time I would definitely like to try the grilled cheese cheese burger.

Herm's has been there as long as I can remember (30+ years) and it's still a great burger & dog joint. In fact, over time menu has been expanded to include numerous choices so there's something for everyone - even health nuts. Huge bonus: This is the only "hot dog stand" in the area I know of with beer & wine. And they deliver. So, what's not to like?

I was introduced to this place by a friend who's been going for years. You'd drive right by it and never notice... however - it's worth stopping in. I've gone maybe a dozen times, and each time, the owner always remembers me, my previous orders, and does the math for the total right there on the spot in his head! The service is professional and fast, the food is always naughty in calories but really good eats, the drinks flow from the fountain, and the games are always on TV. A great place for a group and the kids - they even have a few video games on site. I've tried the dogs, the fried chicken, the tacos, the fried fish, the wings, and the salad - all good.

The people here are awesome. I always get their pizza puff - it's so deep fried, it becomes all bubbly. Everything is cooked to order; if you're craving for good solid greasy deliciousness, check Herm's out. +Il Taco pizza puff +fried veggies

. The food is great! Make it the way you want it the first time around. The people work there really friendly love the sports memorabilia and love the way to feel ill that you're part of the family when you go there. Burgers are the best in the area! Fries what can I say they are great. Don't forget to try the cheese puffs

Our experience at Herm's was really... confusing? And a bit intimidating, to be honest. It was clearly our first time there, but they were still a bit curt and didn't bother to take time to clarify the way they did things over there. First of all, the menu is HUGE. I wish they weren't staring at me waiting for my order as I took a minute to glance at the board and the sea of signs posted everywhere. Then, you order and you grab a seat and you do not pay until you finish. But I didn't know that, and they didn't tell me even though I looked pretty confused reaching for my wallet. I also misheard the guy's question and accidentally upgraded our fries to a large, but then I was literally just too scared to correct him. I'm usually a super confrontational person, but something about their mannerisms here just make me so sheepish! Don't get me wrong, they're very polite... but just also very intimidating. The food was... alright. Herm's burger patties had a nice clean taste and was juicy enough, but it wasn't smoky and thick enough to be a nice char burger or super thin with crispy edges, either. Kind of wishy washy but some may enjoy this style, I guess. Steak sandwich had way too much cheese. The Brat was ... fried? It tasted good though, but a bit strange. I liked that you have the option of a french roll here instead of hot dog bun. The fries were reminiscent of frozen thin McD's fries - will do the job but could be so much better. Then we asked to pay. They did the total in their heads and spewed out a bunch of numbers really fast. I have no idea if they did it right or not. Why don't they just write things down?! The food didn't charm me from the experience of it all, I guess. I think we'll continue driving 10 more seconds down the street to Poochie's for lunch from now on. Herm's is just not our kind of joint, though they do get a lot of patronage and it's impossible to get bored with their extensive menu. Maybe I"ll stop by and try something else (fish tacos?) but I think I'd need some time to gather up the courage to step in here again, hah.

The food was absolutely AMAZING. The staff was A+ I have been coming here since I was a very little girl and now I am 43! I live in Michigan and had not been back since 1992 until now and it is still just as AMAZING... If not more. The restaurant is clean, the kitchen as well. Just perfect in everyway

Place is amazing. If I don't eat at home , I have to eat here. Everything is great. Personally order turkey burger teriyaki style is to die for. Or ask about their off the menu "chopped steak sandwich" owners Scott and Craig are great guys and they're walking calculators. Come in and see how they ring u up without a register.

Don't know why the reviews are so positive. I was there. Got my standard jumbo char dog and cheese fries. The counter guy was really friendly and accommodating. I'd give this place 2 stars just for him. But it wasn't enough. The jumbo char dog had too much of a "snap." I couldn't eat it. Couldn't bite through it. The (too skinny) cheese fries I thought were going to be with Merkt's. It wasn't. They had liquid cheese like the nachos at a movie theatre. Not terrible, but not what I expected. They weren't worth the calories to eat. So I threw almost a whole hotdog and order of cheese fries away. Money is tight for me right now, and even though it was only $7, it wasn't a good value. Won't be back.

Very good grill. After Grecian Kitchen finally disappointed me and Hub's never really did it for me and Poochies was just OK, I decided to try Herm's. Maybe not as good as the nearby and awesome Dengeo's but I put this second on the list of the too many grill type places all within a mile or so of each other.

This is where the locals go. Almost everyone be in here knows the staff by name, and vice versa. When you place your order, you may be surprised when they don't write it down. But don't worry, every detail will be remembered, and will come out exactly as ordered. The food is great. I usually get the cheddar burger. I've always wanted to try the grilled cheeses burger (a burger between 2 grilled cheese sandwiches). The fries are nothing special, but we love the onion rings and broccoli puffs! (Broccoli and cheese, battered and fried)! Tips are often refused, but well deserved. And if they're not busy, they'll bring your food to you, clear your table, and hold the door. Quick dining with full service.

I just love Herms! It's just plain good comfort food. Everything I've ever had there is good. There's tons of variety---they have everything from pastrami sandwiches to chili dogs to tacos! The owner is friendly and attentive. My beau and I have been there quite a few times and he always remembers my order. There are no photos in this review because everything is consumed too greedily and quickly to take a picture of any of it. So make of that what you will.
