Five sexy sandwich stars for the gondola! Best. Sandwich. Ever. I went to Bradley and was obsessed with Avanti's gondolas. A true staple for anyone who has ever lived in Peoria, they continue to live on in my heart. Whenever a friend (or I, for that matter) drive through Peoria, picking up a few gondolas is always a must. Sweet bread, man. That's the situation.

I want to start by saying I really do like Avanti's pizza bread & used to stop every Sunday on my way to work. This is the 2nd awful experience I have had with Avanti's tho. The 1st was for a baby shower at the East Peoria loc. Everything that went poorly was blamed on us and we were never given an apology or offered any type of compensation or even a coupon for a future visit, even after email correspondence with the "corporate office". This time, I ordered 5 gondolas for a business only a few blocks away...it took almost 2 hours. Nothing even had to be cooked!! Also they forgot our condiments! Then the delivery driver called the person collecting the food a "f-ing fat a$$", flipped off everyone outside the business, and peeled out of the parking lot. This was quite possibly the most ridiculous encounter with a delivery person I have ever seen!! It took another 20 minutes for us to get the condiments on the second delivery. Absurd!!! Luckily, they sent a different driver the 2nd time. I called the restaurant and spoke to a mgr who told me that they were really busy & the wait was typical when they are swamped on a holiday weekend (Thanksgiving was the following Thursday. It was NOT a holiday weekend). Strike 2!! Sorry Avanti's, after that, you don't get a 3rd!! These events were enough!! I will NEVER order from any location again!!

People in Peoria have no idea how good they have it. My favorite sandwich is the pizza burger. It's basically a meatball sub with marinara sauce and ooey gooey cheese! The bread is what really sets these sandwiches apart from any competition, which there is none. The gondola is their signature sandwich and it is over a foot long! Other options include spaghetti, lasagna, pizza and many more. The prices are extremely reasonable. This is not a place that I would consider sitting down and ordering. Maybe it's the proximity to Bradley this is simply an excellent carry out or delivery option. Even being very close the delivery times can get to be longer than if you just walked over and picked it up. Stuck with the pizza and sandwiches. It you go for anything else you may be sorely disappointed.

Is it possible to give a quarter of a star. Let me keep this short and to the point.....awful! If people think this place serves good food and that flavorless bread is good then I'd hate to hear what they would call awful! We had a party of 5 all of which ordered something different and all the dishes were terrible. The shrimp in my husband's seafood pasta looked like dehydrated shrimp from a package, my sister had penne pasta with broccoli (stems) that appeared to be frozen broccoli mixed with some kind of sauce they referred to as Alfredo but looked like water, milk and butter. Long story short save yourself some time and money and eat at subway!

The day started off pretty well, we originally wanted to go to One World for a small meal. With the thirty minute wait we decided otherwise. While standing out in the cold a member of our party set out for coffee and coco from Starbucks. We decided to go to Avanti's across the road. The woman originally told us it would be ten minutes just to clean off a table for us. The place was not busy at all, being a waitress myself it doesn't not take that long to clean a table. That aside during our wait many other parties came in and a few even walked out. After standing for a few minutes we were finally seated in the back corner of the dining room. At that moment our other member arrived with the coffee. The waitress then arrived at the same time, to give us our waters. She gave our member with the coffee a strange look and walked away. About 4 minutes passed and the manager approached us saying we're not allowed to have our coffee because it makes "other customers think they sell it" really? You sell Starbucks? I think anyone would be smart enough to know it came from the Starbucks across the road. The manager then told us he'd "let it slide, and that next time we won't allow that" he then proceeded to stand there over our table as if expecting us to jump up and throw out our coffees. After he finally left the waitress failed to ever check on us and our meal, and I noticed the manager staring at us from the kitchen. After a bit we left, utterly disappointed. As for the manager, it won't happen again seeing that we were only visiting Peoria and won't be returning over such a petty dispute. You are NOT a five star restaurant. You are a polished fast food business, it is extremely rude to approach someone over something so petty. This has all made me realize I wish we would have tipped the Starbucks worker better, we sure didn't leave one at Avanti's.

Good, casual dining within across the street from the heart of Bradley. The food is not super hi-quality. The sauce is a step above Chef Boyardee. Their idea of a pizza burger is a meatball sandwich with mozzarella and sauce and their bread. But ohhhh, their bread is awesome. Light and sweet, it's perfect for the pasta or to use for their sandwiches. Daily specials, very light on the wallet. My buddies and I used to go on Wednesdays and split a pizza that would come with free soft drinks, depending on the size. But even if something's not on special, the price is definitely very nice. There is outdoor seating, but no waiter service there. You have to order carryout and then take it outside.

I will admit I have not tried many things from their menu, but from from the two "Italian" entrees I have tried their food tastes like it came out of a can. Their prices are cheap, and their service is so so. Don't come here expecting much if your used to eating better food, otherwise you will be very disappointed. Good bread though.

Went to this particular Avanti's which is right across the street from Bradley University. Being a restaurant in a college area, I expected "college food". Avanti's did not disappoint. Avanti's has a dining area and a carry out area. If you want to relax and have a nice meal, go with the dining area. I looked at it from a distance and it looks like an old school italian restaurant with table cloths, soft lighting, etc. I went with the carry out option and ordered a sausage, mushroom, green pepper and onion pizza. Of course I had to try the famous Gondola. The pizza itself isn't bad. Crust is thin without being cracker thin, you can tell they have tomato sauce in there which is unusual for central illinois. Plenty of toppings and the grease is kept to a minimum. But, the star of the show is the gondola. It's a simple thing really, ham, salami, american cheese and lettuce on a loaf of italian bread. It's the bread thats addicting, soft and sweet, It was my intention to eat half the thing and I ended up eating the whole thing and ignoring the pizza. I don't know what the pasta dishes are like and the pizza is "OK". It's the gondola that I would come back to this place for.

I don't understand the rabid love that Peorians seem to have for Avanti's. Even with my expectations set low, this missed the bar. My distaste for the sweet bread aside, I found the salami in my sandwich less than unappetizing. The wings were soggy. The pasta sauce is incredibly, disgustingly sweet, which is maybe the key to its popularity. Eat frosting out of the can on a regular basis? This place is for you! Don't trust any place that sells pasta and sauce by volume.

Wooohooo P-town roadtrip! Good'o Avanti's. I went to school across from this place years ago and I couldn't get enough of it. After our weekly walks of shame, we would meet here for lunch. I still can't get enough of it. So every time I'm in dirty, old P-town...this is where I eat. It's the best, cheap, Italian food in this country...hands down! Even now, whenever a friend either comes or goes from P-town to Chicago, my first words are always "Could you pick me up some Avanti's?" The bread comes out soft and the ranch dressing is outstanding. They even added cheese melting as an option on top of all their pastas and that alone makes me smile. The gondolas are great sandwiches! If you ever meet anyone from Peoria....probably the first thing that comes out of their mouth is something positive about Avanti's. Peoria=Avanti's

The Gondola is the greatest sandwich. Maybe it is plain with the meat and cheese but you are there for the bread. There is no other bread like it. There is a reason this place has existed as long as it has, it is a staple of Peoria. Growing up we would place orders for anyone going to Peoria for Gondolas. When I went to school at BRADLEY I wasn't allowed home without Gondolas, and now we still order Gondola when friends go back to campus....heck we had a Gondola party last Spring. Don't like the cold sandwich, have the Pizza Bread...nice base before you head to Jimmy's! (All you can eat Spaghetti was a Bradley Swim Team tradition too!)

Avanti's is always a nice place to eat if you are okay with sitting down and relaxing for a bit. Personally, I don't understand why people rave about the gondola's as much as they do. I really don't care for them, but the bread is amazing. Sometimes I go by just to pick up a few loaves to have with dinner. Definitely check that out. Otherwise, it's a nice little place to eat but seems to be standard italian fare. The Italian dressing is fabulously creamy if you are into that (I am!) The pizza is quite expensive though, so you might want to steer clear of that and hit up a different spot instead if that's all you want.

We've tried Avanti's twice and in two different locations since moving to the Peoria area. I'm still trying to figure out why anyone loves this chain of restaurants. The service is slow, the food mediocre at best and we love the kind of food they offer on the menu but keep trying to find someone we can rave about. The other day we went for lunch and ordered the Gondola sandwich. It consisted of 4 pieces of deli ham, 3 slices of american cheese, 3 pieces of some other kind of cheese, a bit of lettuce and tomato and a baked bun bread that we were told was 'baked fresh' and Avanti's own. The sandwich was huge and I ordered a half. My husband ordered a whole and took half home. They are substantial in size but certainly not because of the meat or cheeses included. Guess I'm used to east coast hoagies with all the salami's and dressings but this was just a ham and cheese sandwich to me.

This is definitely not a classy Italian restaurant, but if you are looking for something quick and very cheap, this is it. The bread is delicious, and I think that's why so many people love their Gondolas. To be honest the food isn't very high quality, but its tasty enough and gets the job done.

Not a fan of their sandwichs "gondola"... But their lasanga is pretty good

Good, inexpensive Italian food. It's nothing fancy --- just a great place for a quick bite or a casual meal with friends / family. The bread is amazing. When returning to Peoria, my parents always greet me with a fresh gondola. Then, while in town, I try to have as many as possible. And one generally is in my carry on when I leave.

Italian food for the townies. Gondola is good. That's all I really have to say.

I will give Avanti's a little more credit than Nelson. It's a Peoria institution! Maybe not the greatest Italian food you'll ever have, but it isn't bad at all. The pizza is pretty decent too.
