The best part of this meal was the chips and salsa! We ordered three different dinners and they came out with no flavor. The quality of their dinners was less than what I could get going through drive in mexican food. This place also doesn't offer draft beer. Nothing goes better with mexican food than draft beer but they will sell you a small bottle for a large price. Waiter was too busy to keep our water glasses and chip basket full. Won't go back to this place any time soon.

What can i say ... "PEPES MAKES VERY GOOD TACOS....." When that craving calls, only Pepe's carne asada will suffice. Clean Nice Good Food Been here hundreds of times.

I never really considered myself much of a (American version) Mexican foods snob, but after eating here, I must be. I have certain expectations of Pepe's places and I was really let down at this one. Our service was fine and timely. The server was nice, wrote down every order, and only repeated what the name of the ordered entree's were (which should have been our clue). When the food came out, two of the orders were wrong. Examples: One person asked for no tomatos on anything and got them (easily fixed by removing them) and the other had ground beef instead of the requested steak, which is more of an issue. I never send anything back to the kitchen and certainly wouldn't in this case, so we just ate the food as served. I don't know where the blame lies on this because the server didn't repeat our order back in detail. The food is extremely bland - all of it. American-ized Mexican foods are to have some sort of spicing in them and the other Pepe's I've been to somewhat deliver on that. Nothing at this one had any flavor added to it. The ground beef tacos tasted more like a hamburger in a shell. The beans (which are awesome at the Waukegan location!) didn't have any taste at all to them. The rice tasted very similar to Minute Rice and there were no peas or anything in it, which there usually are. Very bland. Overall, we were very disappointed. When you put a generic "Mexican" themed restaurant in a generic looking strip mall in the middle of concrete and buiding Generica, I guess this is what you get. Next time I'm looking for Mexican themed food around here I'm driving to Aurora.

I can't believe I hadn't noticed this restaurant was here! We keep going by to and from JCPenney and Wal-Mart. Silly us! It's a great outlet of the famous Mexican restaurant. Service is friendly and the food is delicious as always. On the Sunday we visited, there were only two other tables occupied, which made me wonder whether we weren't the only ones who didn't realize this gem was here! I ordered the shrimp tostadas dinner, and the significant-other unit ordered the chicken taquitos. I think next time I'll as for some lemon wedges, as the shrimp were not seasoned and could have been improved exponentially by some lemon. There's something about their rice that makes me close my eyes and go mmm I just love it! Another plus, is that they make their iced tea fresh, and from scratch! It's delicious and it's a pretty big glass too. Will be back many, many more times. Gracias!

They really know how to cook a steak! Pleasantly surprised, went in thinking a mexican chain restaurant would probably just be acceptable but it's very good! Good size portions for price, excellent service.

I think their food is good but service could be better. There was only one waitress for he whole place from 530 on...dinner time. I felt bad for her. She was very busy but very attentive. Then like the time before we were there they forgot our appetizer. I saw her write it down...how do they forget? Then didn't charge us for it and didn't say anything.. how does that even happen? Asked for no beans on my dinner and of course there were beans.

I know this is a chain restaurant and the food is very average, and the inside isn't that great, it kind of smells musty, and I know that I should probably only rate it three or four stars because of these reasons but the service at this place is OUTSTANDING! I have been coming here since 2005 and they have always been consistent in their food and provided me with the best customer service I could possibly ask for. I love the owners, managers, servers, cooks, I love them all. As soon as you walk in, you are kindly greeted with smiling faces and seated immediately. I have never had to wait and I have never known anyone having to wait, even when it is crowded. They serve you fresh, hot and salty tortilla chips with chunky salsa as soon as you are seated. It's perfect. Then my kind and outgoing waiter takes my drink order, the biggest margarita you can possibly order with a salted rim please, and brings it back within minutes. It's sooo good and sooo strong, it always sends chills down my spine. I love a strong, delicious marg! I think I've tried just about every combination platter you can order on their menu. The pinata is my favorite--taco, tostada and tamale. Although the food is nothing special, regular mexican food you could probably find at any place, it is hot and tasty in my opinion. I've read some of the other reviews of people getting sick and I've never had that issue here. The food has always been good to me. Especially their fried ice cream. What a devilish dessert. I have to get it every time I come. That was until recently when they told me they got a new flan recipe and let me try a sample, which turned into a slice, which turned into two slices. So good. There hasn't been a time yet where I've been displeased with the service. They are always on point with refills, they are quick about bringing food and they are always so pleasant about it. They love to talk to you about your food and find out what you like and don't like about it and how they can improve. If you don't like your food, I am certain they would have no issue taking it back and providing you with something else. They will check on you repeatedly while you are dining in to make sure you have absolutely everything you need to make your experience at Pepe's enjoyable. The other day I sat in there with my mom and after we finished eating, we decided to stay a little longer to talk and finish our gigantic margaritas (we were really just waiting for our buzz to wear off before one of us was capable of driving out of there....how responsible). As we sat there, one of the employees brought us more chips and salsa. When we finished them, he kept bringing more! Even though we had already finished our food, paid our bill, and we weren't ordering anything else, they had no issue with us sitting there and nomming on their free chips and salsa. I love this place. Another great thing about this Pepe's is that they are always doing promotional offers. A lot of the time you can find BOGO coupons or 20% off your entire meal. I love this Pepe's and even though I live in Naperville now and there is one much closer to me, I still make the drive to Oswego. Thank you, Pepe's!

Ok, walked in two cooks and a waiter were playing video games. It didn't take long for me to be seated though as the place had two other people in there. Ask the waiter a question and it was pretty clear he had an issue understanding me. I asked him two more question "Is the salsa fresh? Is it made with tomato paste?" He said yes and yes. Tomato paste is usually not fresh. I ordered Carne a la Mexicans, no rice extra sauce which made him giggle for some reason I guess no one orders extra sauce. The food came really fast almost to fast making me think is was precooked. I am happy to say that the food was fantastic better then I hoped for. This was worth coming here just for the food. The only thing I would suggest is make the salsa from scratch. Other then that it was a good experience. Next time I will try it with pablano peppers instead of green. Maybe add Chilaquiles to the menu.

Three out of four members of my family got horrible, too-awful-to-describe food poisoning at this place. When I called the next day as we were all suffering, to let the management know they had a food-borne pathogen on their hands, he could not care less, gave some weak "food comes from corporate" excuses, and defended the restaurant. No, we could not have gotten it anywhere else. The only one who did not eat from the offending plate did not get sick. If you want to lose a few pounds in a very painful and horrific way, you could give this place a try, roll the dice and you might just get lucky and get the same bug we did. There are far too many decent, family-run Mexican restaurants in the area to be persuaded by the constant barrage of coupons from this place. Never, ever going again to this one or any Pepe's anywhere ever. Ever.

We found this while running errands in Oswego (we live nearby on the west side of Aurora) -- what a great find! My husband and I have been back a couple of times now and it is seriously a great, cheap meal. You get a great amount of food for the price -- we can eat for less than $20 every time for dinner, and keep it under $30 with margaritas. There are daily specials (Yesterday we hit up the unlimited tacos for $6.99 per person). There are only a few tables usually in use when we're there -- more people need to know this place is here! Service is good, prices are great, and the flavors are perfect (try the chicken burrito; the seasonings are spot on to excellent). Also, check out the Clipper magazing -- I have found coupons in there for additional savings.

Have gone here a couple times, with Groupon and coupons. The food is ok, but there are much better options in Aurora area. Overall, prefer Las Palmas or Jaliscos for more authentic and overall better food.

We have gone to this place a lot until tonight which will be our last. My husband ordered fajitas which was a plate of grease. When we asked our server he could not speak english to which I had to correct him. He tried telling us it was the marinade. Coupon or not, not the best place to consume calories... Processed, greasy, step above taco bell.

Came in around 2pm. No one was there so we had the place to ourselves. The host/waiter was good, checking on us periodically. Salsa was mild :( but the food was fresh-ish. I had the Cancun salad. Shredded iceberg lettuce in the bottom of a tortilla taco bowl and the crabmeat was imitation, but I liked it. My friend had fish tacos and really liked them, said the fish was not fried. The restaurant itself is very colorful and fun. We listened/watched Spanish soap operas the entire time, which was entertaining :) all in all, tho not my favorite Mexican restaurant, still good and I'd come back if I was hungry and in the area.

Met up at Pepe's last night (Monday) for a Girls' Night catch up session. Perhaps Monday night's a typically slow there, but they seemed extremely understaffed. I was with a group of 8 and there were about 8 other diners in the restaurant, plus a bunch of pick-up orders. THE SERVICE: There was ONE person working the entire place as everything -- hostess, waiter, and (helping the) busser. He was friendly, but never acknowledged how delayed our food was. (Our food took ONE HOUR to arrive.) We were so hungry that our chip baskets never stood a chance. There was ONE busser who, in between clearing tables, also helped the first guy serve dishes. They were both working hard and as efficient as possible. I can only assume there was one(?) person in the kitchen since our food took so long to arrive. THE FOOD: The food was REALLY good! Maybe the starvation factor played into it, but I very much enjoyed my order of Veggie Quesadillas. The veggies were charred just-right and the cheese was ooey-gooey goodness. CONCLUSION: I wish I could give this place more stars, especially since my friend (who is a proud weekly regular) loves it so much. I'll probably visit one more time and cross my fingers it's a faster experience.

I live in Oswego, so I was excited to see that there was a sit down restaurant nearby that I had not been to. This review is of my first and last time here. The food is terrible. I ordered the taquitos: half beef, half cheese. 8 of them came on a plate along with a bland mixture of guacamole and sour cream. As I bit into my first taquito, a gush of grease came out of the already overly greasy food. My hands were drenched in grease just from one taquito that I could not have another bite so I sat there watching as my husband tried to power through his first big bite of their burrito which lacked flavor and had a hard tortilla that was probably not cooked thoroughly. This place is definitely for people that have not had real Mexican food or that love everything fried and greasy. On an good note however, it was nice to have RC instead of Coke or Pepsi.

The first time I came here was my pre-Yelp stage in life, and if I had been a Yelp-er at that time, two stars would have been the max. Experience wasn't so hot, service was bizarre at best, and we vowed never to visit again (and waste our restaurant.com deals). Fast forward a few years, and we decided to give this another try. Not sure if something changed or I did, but everything was great! The margaritas are fantastic and you get a great deal for what you pay for. Chips and salsa are filled up often and the food comes out quickly. This is still a chain, so nothing is out of this world different, but the food is quality and great!

Stopped in for dinner the other night and we left full and happy. Salsa and chips at the table in under 10 seconds--chips were warm and salty just the way we like em. I don't know about you but I love cilantro and the salsa was full of it--fantastic flavor. We ordered the steak quesadillas and their equivalent of chicken chimichangas. Both were excellent and there was enough to take some home for a little midnight fiesta. Service was great--everyone seemed to be helping each other. Look for them on groupon--they have a $10 for $20 deal occasionally.

The food was not very good but it was the best in the Oswego area. Some of it tasted like it was made a day or so earlier and reheated. The salsa and guacamole were good. Not a soul in the restaurant. I will probably never return but recommend for suburban American Mexican eaters. Probably a great place for soccer game celebrations, birthday parties, etc. If this place were in the city or downtown Naperville, it would only get one star due to better options available.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
