You just can never go wrong with Portillos! Chardogs, cheese fries, Cheesey Beef sandwich, Yum-O : ) Onion rings and top it off with some great cold drinks! Thank you for saving me from my hunger pains!!

I want to slap Portillo's in the face because it is so good! What do you want? A salad, they have it. What about chicken sandwich on a croissant? Yup! How about an Italian beef? You know it. So delicious. However, their pinnacle of delicious is the chocolate cake. That, my dear, is the best dessert you will ever eat for under $3. Whether you are a cake lover or not, this is the treat you must try. I am actually having a love affair with this cake. I make excuses to go to Portillo's for this cake. Sure the beef is great, the chicken sandwich is great, the salads are great but the cake, the cake...it is pure phenomenal. WOW! Explosion in my mouth! I would skip the fries. They are crinkle cut from a bag. Nothing impressive, nothing worth playing for. Skip those calories and get the cake.

I had the Italian Beef, which was my first Portillo sandwich. Thus far, this is the best steak 'n cheese I've ever tasted. From the bread, to the meat, and the side ingredients, this is by far the most satisfying mouthful of sandwich ever! It'll be my first food stop when I return to Chicagoland.

Came here for a meeting. Just a few things. I really like the food here. Not expensive and just right. There are many different kinds of variety of food. Believe it or not, the coffee was fresh and perfect. I would recommend this restaurant.

Came here a couple days ago. Portillio's is in my top 5 places to eat. Iv made it a life goal to go to each Portillo's to experience the era of each one the 50's 60's and so on. What I Love about portillo's in general is that no matter which one you go to the food you order will always taste the same. I always get a broiled chicken sandwich and a hot dog of course and I usually leave with something to go that's new that I haven't tried, and I must say nothing has ever disappointed me. In particular this one I really liked the environment it deffinatly takes you away from the modern age

I suppose we shouldn't have liked this place quite so well, and yet every time we've visited Chicago we've made our way into one of the Portillo's locations. Hubby came back from China for a "visit" and had "missed" Portillo's, so of course, we had to go. I went to the drive thru, which always amazes me. How do they get everyone's order straight and moving "like a drive thru"? The procedure seems effortless and seamless. I know they make mistakes, from time to time and it's not fun, or okay, when it happens to you; but they aren't perfect. However, very, very good and pleasant and professional, no matter what the weather. As for the food - always great. Everyone was satisfied and full.

Great food at a good price. This has become one of the more constant lunch outings for a group of us at work. This portillos doesn't vary greatly from any of the other portillos in the chicago area, but it is always neat & clean, and the wait staff is always very friendly. This one is slightly smaller than some of the other Portillos, which can cause lines if you go during the lunch rush, but they are efficient both at the register & in the kitchen. The best part about Portillos is the variety. Some days they have the burger special, other days the italian beef special or if you're really hungry, go for a rack of ribs. Traditionally I don't spend more than $6 or $7 and I leave the place stuffed.

This location, smaller in size then your typical Portillo's, seems to manage just fine. Efficient lines, short wait, clean and well maintained. This time I opted for an Italian beef sandwich which was well seasoned and wet. They could have a gone a little heavier on my giardenera, but at least they made an attempt. Note to self: in the future ask for double giardenera? We also indulged in some of the sides, onion rings for companion and cheese fries for myself. We had a hard time not poking in each others boxes (that didn't come out sounding right) and devouring our crispy, golden delights. The onion rings were a big "O" of fried perfection and the cheese for the fries wasn't just some crappy gross 7-11 variety of yellow liquid cheese, but a step above. By the end of the meal my napkin was rendered practically transparent from all the grease, proof in the pudding that the meal was first rate.

This Portillo's didn't do it for me... The Italian Beef we got was very bland and dry. :( The hot dogs were good nonetheless.

I think the lines are a little shorter here than at Elmhurst, although I'm sure it depends on the time of day. I love Portillo's, but for a long time I stopped going because I noticed that whenever I ordered a garlic breadstick, I'd have to wait ten minutes extra for my order. And, when I asked staff if ordering a garlic breadstick would take longer, they said no -- but then it did! I just found myself forgetting that Portillio's was even an option when I wanted to pick something up fast. Interesting how that works. For efficiency, consistency and yumminess, I'd have to give it four stars.

This Portillo, That Portillo, seen one, seen 'em all. Greasy fast food and waiting in line. But at least there ARE some options, like a nice sugery chocolate brownie. And you can usually find someplace to sit down after waiting in line. And the assistant manager DOES herd the cattle politely. And we DO usually, empty our own trash and place our greasy trays in a neat pile. And the menu selection is larger than MacBurger or BurgerWhop......kinda...... And the shopperMoms hang onto their wandering kids lest they get caught up in the human maze or slip on the floor. And you can usually escape with change from your 10 bucks.....and........

OK I LOVE portillos. And Ive been to several portillos too. Bolingbrook, Chanahan, Naperville.... I went to this one this past weekend. I sit down to eat my food. To see that every table has crumbs or salt on it!! I am a freak about eating at a clean table! Who knows if the person before you was sick and sneezing on the table!?! I picked a table and found some paper towels and spray and cleaned the table myself! Then as Im sitting down eating this employee emerges from the back and I think Oh good hes gonna clean!! HA!!!!!!! No, he was ACTING like he was cleaning!! But did not clean one table!!! There was crap everywhere in the lobby!!! It was disgusting!! And you have this dumb kid dragging around the lobby taking a towel and swiping each table in the managers view like one swipe! OK right now there are NASTY flues going around!!! Its the middle of winter and people are getting sick left and right!! Keep you store clean!!! So lets get to the food now. There was a hair on my beef sandwhich!! And the fries were not that great! I can tell that the oil was not changed for like a day or so. The beef was dry too. I love going to OTHER portillos because they are clean! Everytime I go to the good ones there is ALWAYS someone cleaning in the lobby! And there fries are fresh and the oil is cleaned! but not this one! We went about 11:00am right before lunch too!! At that point they were only open for an hour! And as we we're leaving there was a table with fries and food allllll over the floor!!! And then you have this dumb kid just moaping around acting like hes cleaning! At that point he was gone and in the back and done acting like he was cleaning. So who knows how long that mess stayed there for! I will never go to THIS portollos again! The quality is pour and not as good as the ones that I have experienced

I purchased a Portillos beef package for $ 26 for 2 1/2 pounds of beef. It was for a party and it was perfect. The overall amount came out to $32 because I also got some bread. The food was plenty for my 14 guests and I still had left overs. I've purchased these packs in the past, but from the location located on Des Plaines and Roosevelt. Personally, I prefer the other location. The beef just tasted better.

Food is ok. service is ok. Just a fast food joint. Ribs fall off the bone but there's no chew to it I mean you wouldn't even need teeth to chew the meat. I like ribs with a bite. The Italian beef sandwich is just a pile of meat and a few peppers. They charge you for the peppers but don't tell you so be careful.

The dog was huge and the fries were great, but that's about where it ends. The chili was too runny and made the chili cheese dog too soggy to enjoy. The self service dining was ok, but u had to buy Ur beer at a separate bar and pay separately. I get over there to find out they only have miller lite and genuine draft. 2 bad options, but no way I was going back to wait in line for a diet coke now, so I got one and left half of it. NOT typical;(. Decent food and service for the money, but not great.

I moved away from the Chicago area in 1985, but I must revisit Portillo's whenever I return home. Last Saturday, I got takeout from here for my favorite Italian beef sandwich with hot peppers! It almost makes me want to move back home! Delicious! We also got hotdogs and drinks. For 9 people, they got the order perfect and we all were well fed.

The food is ok its the traditional american food. Hamburgers, hotdogs, beefs, cheese fries, salads, and sausages. Etc. Greasy fatty food its good once and a while. But damn can they offerd to put the heater on a little higher. We went here no where to sit cause the employees were sitting and eatting at all thes booths and pay customers are stuck eatting at a table by the cold windows.

I went here during my lunch break. It was quite busy, but the turnover was pretty fast. It's nice how they write your order down on a paper bag before you get to the cashier to order. I ordered a chili cheese dog and cheese fries, and those were both quite delicious. I especially enjoyed the chili on the dog... very thick and beany. My co-workers ordered the italian beef (which looked tasty although not as tasty as Johnny's Beef), a milk shake, a salad (the salads are apparently very delicious if you want to go for the lighter side), a chicken sandwich, and the strawberry shortcake (which definitely looked worth trying next time). The workers were friendly even during such a rushed period. The prices were pretty low. They also have a drive through. Overall, a great place for a quick bite!

What is there not to love about this restaurant. There food is so freaking good! I believe that their French fries are the best I've had. I've tried so many items on their menu and I've liked all of them. If I had to pick a fave, it would be their Italian beef! They make it just right every time! Dry with hot peppers for me please. Oh and they have free refills for iced tea! Yes!!

I grew up with Portillos and went there in high school with my friends. So, there is no need to "sell" me on how good the food is. The weird thing is that I have never eaten the beef and rarely have had a hot dog since childhood. I've been a loyal fan of the breaded chicken sandwich and fries for about 25 years. The husband likes to switch things up whenever he comes, so he has tried ribs, beef, sausage, etc. One thing that bugs me is how the drive-thru orders are always handled first and then the stuff that sits out. We end up waiting FOREVER for our stuff because I know they fry the chicken to order. But, I appreciate the freshness and the crisp of my crinkle fries. Portillos is probably the only thing I actually like about Chicago.

The service is AWFUL!! And the food especially the ribs, was only so- so - probably annoyed so much that it affected my view of the food. Gave them the benefit of the doubt, but after the last 3 times we've gone and waiting a minimum of 25 minutes we have had enough!! They have lost our order 2 times. All the give a crap about is the drive thru. Would complain to the useless manager but judging by any parking lot of any Portillios, there are 25 more a-holes to replace us. So done with this Northlake Portillos!!

  • Nermin D.

I come here every now and then, so far never been disappointed. The food is amazing and they prep it really quickly. The only negative that I would say, would be the drive thru. I don't like that they have enployees taking your order prior to even seeing the menu. For someone who is unsure of what they want and are unfamiliar with the menu it is kind of a challenge for them. They have lost my business quite a few times due to that fact. Otherwise, the employees are very friendly and provide great customer service, and the food is great. This place is good for a whole family as they have a decent sized menu, or if you want to grab a kick bite on your own.

If you are looking for a new lunch spot, you have to check out the local Portillos. I This one is good, pretty darn good. Decent hot dogs and Maxwell Street Polish that was really good. The hustle and bustle at this place the whole staff all cheered up, was a treat I am not that into hotdogs n all but I am glad I tried this place out. The young girl who took our order was patient, food was served in timely manner and they have this thing where they Rhyme your order number e.g. 107 here is your heaven, very clever. And the girl was very cute. The food was great nice taste, the only thing bothers me was the bun of my hotdog was little too soggy. Chilli was tasty with melting cheese and there fries with melting cheese and there chicken and bacon burger is awesomeeee must try if u like the crunchy bacon. I'll go again if I am craving the chilli and chicken n bacon burger.

Never again. What a horrendous experience. Just went though the drive through around 10:30pm. The manager was outside reading someone the riot act not 5 feet from all the customers in cars with our windows down. How embarrassing and awkward. Then get to the pay window and the girl is dancing and slapping the other guys. She finally sees me, literally a minute and now all cars in front of me at the pick up window are gone. She tells me how much and then goes back to playing with her friends. I lay my money up on the counter from my car. She asked me if I wanted my change. I just drove forward. Seriously??!?! Then the guy handing my food out wouldn't open the little door all the way so my food bag was all squashed up in the mostly closed doors. Fries totally upside down and spilled...and cold since the money girl can't do her job in a timely fashion. No straw either. It's no wonder they have a sign for new managers. I won't be back to that location.

What more is there to say about Portillo's? They're a Chicago institution and I still like their Italian beefs over anywhere else I've tried. This location is pretty spacious and nice, especially compared to some of their other venues. The workers, while not overly friendly, got my order right and had it out in no time. I was able to get in, wolf down some delicious hot food, and get out quickly - exactly what I was looking for.

I love coming to this place for one reason and one reason only - that being the food. If I were to base my yelp rating solely on the food, I would give this restaurant a four or five on the five star scale. The place has delicious stuff - no doubt about it. Every time I eat here, I'm completely satisfied. I normally get the Chicken Caesar Salad which is just wonderful. Their dressing in perfect. I also usually get a side of fries which is always hot and fresh out the kitchen. I'm positive that any thing ordered off their menu will not disappoint. Unfortunately, I have to incorporate their service in this rating. The workers here are not friendly, likeable, respectful, nor anything of that nature. They stare you down when you are ordering with an unfriendly set of eyes, they're impatient, they're stingy with the condiments/peppers, and they make me not want to eat here. I understand that the place gets busy but it is unprofessional to inflict a sense of urgency to move on to the customer while I'm in the process of ordering. Perhaps the displeasing traits are due to the fact they hire too many young kids with no manners or experience in the restaurant business. I don't know what it is, but I'm not a fan. With that being said, get your food via the drive-thru! You still get the delicious food without having to deal with insensible servers taking your order at the register.

I like the prohibition era themed Portillo's a lot. They are way more tolerable to sit in then the poorly designed 1950s/1960s themed interiors. The service here is much slower than many of their contemporaries. I was actually surprised because most places really crack the whip and have customers cruising through without having quality suffer. But alas, we were the only ones ordering and waiting for food when we were there and we waited a long time while the stoner running the ketchup talked about how he's "a legal adult" and "would get locked up for that shit". Low quality Portillos

"franks & beans, franks & beans!" -Warren (There's Something About Mary) Portillo's has plenty of franks, and even a few beans, in the form of their chili cheese dog. It's a Chicago specialty, just as In-N-Out Burger is a California/West coast gig, and Skyline a Cincinnati-deal. Usually partnered with a Barnelli's Pasta + Sandwiches, any Portillo's in the greater metro area will ALWAYS have a stack of cars in the drive-thru, doesn't matter what time of day. It can be 10:30-11am, people are lining up for an Italian beef or double Chi-style red hot. Crazy people are crazy. The crinkle-cut fries are excellent, nice and salty. The 'dogs are priced reasonably, and like many have already commented, the chocolate cake is to-die-for. Most locations have a beer and wine station (although I didn't notice if this one did). I was leaning towards a solid 4-star, but as I sat and devoured my red hot with extra sport peppers, I heard something that gives Portillo's that extra boost. When your order is called, instead of simply saying "number one-twenty-five" or shouting your name, as many Mcdonalds do nowadays, the designated announcer has a catchy rhyme that goes with your order number. Per example: "order #127, welcome to hot dog heaven", "order #129, your lunch looks devine", or my personal favorite "order #126, come gitcho' Portillo's fix!" Every time a customer picked up their food, they were smiling, a few even laughing. I couldn't help but smile and laugh too; something so small having an equally-pleasant impact on dozens of people during their lunch hour. Hell, it made my day. Now THAT'S certainly worthy of an extra star.

This place has it all and a must do in Chicago!! There big beef is so good that your mouth waters for it after eating. Or you a like me and wake up thinking about it. Each time I've come ive tried something different. From the crazy loaded up hot dogs, to chicken sandwich, a salad, and the Italian beef. BUT NOTHING compares to the BIG BEEF!!! It is delish.Smooth shredded beef, pick yr cheese (best with Mozzarella!) & if u like hot peppers add them!! The hot peppers make it and they are not your typical hot peppers. It does come with an au ju sauce. Id recommend getting it on the side and dipping it. The reason is and only down fall of the sandwich is that its messy. The bread will start to fall apart with it without the sauce on it. And that's only because they have loaded it with beef! Not to shabby in my book. I will like my fingers and make a mess for the big beef! Boom so good :-)

I promise that this review of Portillo's will be free from double entendre and other crude references to wieners. The statement above is most likely a lie, but let's see where this goes..... I wore my customer completely into the ground, saying that I was fine with working through breakfast, lunch, dinner, whatever he could throw at me. A veritable 6 million dollar Consulting Man in full bloom! He didn't take the challenge, saying that he needed something to eat or he would fall over quivering and shaking in a formless mass on yet another datacenter Raised Floor. Since my CPR certificate has long expired AND discretion being the better part of valor (Writer's Note: Does anybody know what that expression really means?), I let him have his way and call out a place for lunch. SInce he was also from out of town and saw Portillo's at the corner, he declared this the Lunch Stop of the Day. Since the customer is always right, off we went. It is a wiener place. Don't get me wrong, they do all kinds of cool and interesting things with wieners here, many of which I had never seen before. It was really a refreshing experience to watch the guys and gals lovingly place just the right sized wiener in between the crack of the bun and disguise it with just the right dressings in a vein effort to divert attention to what was about to happen. After all, how threatening can a wiener dressed in white mayo really be? Add just a bit of relish, maybe some ketchup just for effect and it is the perfect disguise. Sneak attach while you weren't looking. Add some jalepenos and the only evidence is a nagging pain in the place where you sit down. So for me, well, I ordered a large diet coke and watched the show. The others, though, they dove in with both hands. Go big or go home I guess. But when in a strange land, I tend to hang back and watch the facial expression of others that drink life to the lees.

Nice lunch spot. The place can get busy but not a long wait. The chili was great! I will return

Their food here is great. I love their Italian beef with a cup of cheese. Their breadsticks are cheap and delicious, of course they're drenched in oil! I have had a few of their salads, huge portion! Best of all here... Are their chocolate cake shakes!!! I allow myself one maybe two of these shakes a year. Enjoy.

This review got 3 stars because of the DELICIOUS food, just like every location and other time I have been to a Portillos. However, the service here was extremely slow. The lady working the counter handing out food kept telling the rest of the staff to hurry and get our food ready since she saw us standing there for way too long. We had 3 hotdogs, 3 fries, and a beef. The fries are already done, and the beefs and hotdogs seem like they should not take any longer then 5 min. We waited for well over 10 minutes and the place was not crowded at all. The service was way to slow, but the food was great as usual.

Staff always keeps this place clean. 4 stars is mainly for their excellent mouth watering bbq ribs. Italian beef is pretty good too. Although, they are pretty cheap on the giardinera and mozzarella if you ask for some...

Having family in Chicago and trying all of their favorite restaurants, one thing is for certain; everyone has their own favorite. Living in the D/FW area and when I am not in Chicago on a business trip or visiting family, I can get my Beef and hot dog fix at a small local place that is owned by a ex south sider. As I was eating my D/FW beef (Vienna of course) he told me the nxt time I am in the windy city to try Portillo's. Stopped of at this location on my way to midway about 1, and the place was packed. I ordered the combo beef and sausage w/ hot peppers wet and onion rings. Loved it. The combo was perfect. The beef tender and the sausage had a crisp outter shell and a delicious flavor. The peppers were not that hot and added additional flavor that I like. The onion rings were very good and came out piping hot. Of all the places to choose from in Chicago, I found found that everyone has their favorites. Next time when I am in Chi-town, Portillo's here I come!

I have to say I keep going back here because of the atmosphere. I have always been obsessed with 50's and 60's themed places, and recently I found out that the Portillo's in the Chicago area's each have their own different time themes. I went on a Monday night at around 7:30pm, and it wasn't busy at all (which was nice). Usually this restaurant is extremely packed. The large milkshakes are HUGE! I highly suggest a small, because they fill you up very fast and you can't enjoy your meal ... speaking from experience! The large fries are the same, VERY big. A small is more than enough for the average eater. Also I highly recommend to get cheese sauce on the side! My burger was decent .... it was quite burnt so all I tasted was burnt charcoal. Not very good at all. Once I got to the center, it wasn't too bad, but the outside was horribly burnt. I haven't had any major problems with this place so far. They are always fast and efficient!

I was really disappointed with my broiled chicken sandwich it didn't even taste like chicken and when you bit into it it made a noise So Gross!!! I've had their crispy chicken and that's what I thought I was getting but they gave me the broiled. NEVER AGAIN. Portillos in general is really nothing to write home about the food is okay, the beefs are not all that great, they are bland, there is no real flavor.

If you are looking for salty, greasy, or sweet, this place will knock your socks off, and leave trails of grease down your elbows. I go here every single time I am in Chicago because of how good it is. I would not advise eating here more than once a month for health reasons.

How many people does it take to get my order right? First they did not bring out the shake but the person at the window is telling the person outside that he gave her the shake. Then, as I drove around the building, I realized I better check the bag. Well, the beef cheddar crois was missing. I drove back to the window and had to wait a few minutes. When I got home, they had dipped the beef/ched/crois and I had to eat it with a fork and knife not as intended as a sandwich. What a dissapointment. It is unlikely I will be going back soon.

OMG YELPERS!!! Where have I been???? Let's just say I had to go AWOL for a spell, but no worries, i'm alive and well!! I went recently to visit a friend who raved about this place for 2 hours before he brought me here. All his raving had me thinking this was gonna be something REALLY special! It wasn't. Not even a little. I mean, I guess if you really love hot dogs or Italian beef, it would have something to offer, but I wasn't really in the mood for either when we got here. The inside is all 50's diner. Kitschy. Seen it a million times. Think Red Robin meets Big Boy meets Steak and Shake. My friend got an Italian, and I got fish sandwich. I know right? Fish sandwich? Yep. So, I got a piece of fried fish with some lettuce and mayonaise on it. Not tartar sauce, just straight up mayo. Yuck. This did not please me. I ate about half and gave up. Meanwhile, my friend is scarfing his beef sandwich like he's one of the guests at the last supper. Well, good for him! I nibbled some fries, drank my Coke and called it a day. Maybe next time i'm near Chicago, I'll pick out where we eat. :) /BlahChainDiner

Great dogs and beefs. The chop or garden salads are always good. Add a grill chicken to the garden. The cake what a treat. Shakes and malts can't be beat. The Rush on Roosevelt

I can't say I ever had a bad meal there. I will say some are better then others. I like the beef sandwiches but I love the beef and cheddar on a croissant much better. Not as much bread and the sandwich is easier to eat. The hot dogs lately seemed to Change I don't know what it is but the casing on the dog is tougher hard to bite into. Breaded chicken sandwich is good too Italian sausage is really good when not too spicy. Now the salads they are great their chopped salad is my favorite with ranch dressing don't care for the house. All the salsa are fabulous just a bit pricey but worth every last leaf! Enjoy

I don't think I need to write a review if you're from the area, because you should know about portillos! Deliciously well known! EVERYTHING IS DELICIOUS! The Chicago Style Jumbo Dog is outta this world. The Italian Beef, dipped with hot peppers, OMG! The hot chicken Caesar salad . Everything is yum!

I came here with a group when one person learned that a couple of us had not experienced Portillo's. After learning they are famous for Italian beef, I ordered the Italian beef. The food came quick after ordering and tasted just fine. I had to use more than a few napkins to clean myself through the course of the meal. The grease was abundant. I expected this, because that is how the food had been described to me. If you really want Italian beef, this place is a good choice for you. If you don't, this place probably can wait until you really want Italian beef.

Love italian beef wit some curly cheese fries.. My husband love his combo italian beef which i think thats way too much for one person!!! I wish they carry pasta in this location so i dont have to go to the one in morton grove area..

The one thing I will say for Portillo's is that it's consistent. We had never been to this particular location before, but we chose to stop here because it was the most convenient location for us that day. The food was exactly perfect -- the same wonderful beef with peppers and a lovely hot steaming batch of cheese fries. Though the folks at this location don't move quite as fast or efficiently as those at other locations, they are still really accurate with your order (most important!) and deliver your food piping hot to you within a reasonable amount of time. Specific to this location, I will say that the layout seemed kind of odd, like they laid out the store "long-wise" instead of according to their normal format. I would guess this has something to do with the specific chunk of land that this store sits on or the design requirements of that town, but whatever. Just seemed a bit odd to a newcomer, but totally a stupid aesthetic note that did nothing to hinder our excellent experience.

I live a few blocks from the portillos in niles and go there frequently.....on the way to the horse track we decided to stop at this portillos figuring it was a sure thing. My order was all wrong and when I received my order (breaded chicken croissant) The croissant was a smashed, ripped , sad excuse for a croissant. Basically took the chicken and stuff off and ate it separate. As I was up at counter saying my order was wrong another person came up with the same complaint which leads me to the thought that its a common thing. They do the typical ordering shtick where they babble over the loud speaker in a weird dialect however I could go without the act if it means they get the order RIGHT. Would never do the drive thru in fear of this happening I like portillos in general and go to many locations wherever im at in the city because the food for the most part is good but this location needs some work.

The Portillo's closest to my work. Hardly ever go as I appreciate my long term health (beer drinking aside) + is can be rather dangerous to cross the street. But when I do go: **Beef wet and hot. **Vanilla milkshake (do not ask for a large as the regular is big enough). **Occasionally I will get onion rings with lots of little paper cups filled with ketchup

Not really too much to say, but I gotta throw my love out to Portillo's! I really love the grilled tuna sandwich.....and their awesome crinkly fries. UH! Portillo's is a good place to go when you have a craving for fast food but don't want greasy crap. They are sorta like the "gourmet" option for the fast food industry. MMMM MMMM good! Plus, their tiramisu is the best I've ever had. However, they only have it at certain locations (namely, Schaumburg) so I suggest visiting other locations to peruse the various desserts, which are equally delicious!

After growing up in the N'West burbs of Chicago, I moved to Denver for 14 years, and sure I missed family and friends, but man did I miss the food. And it was the quick and easy fast food that I really missed. You want a quick lunch in most cities? - its a fast food chain like McD's or Subway. Oh I prayed they'd open a Portillos near my Denver work. But no such luck. Since returning home to Chicago, I've visited Portillos way more times than i should. I love this place, everything is good, the hot dogs, the beefs (not Johnnie's in Elmwood Park good, but still), and very underrated hamburgers - go for grilled onions instead of raw and this is a killer burger place. I even tried a salad once, and I didn't fool myself into thinking this was really diet food, but it was a break from the greasy fare, and it was really good too. Everyone knows about their chocolate cake, but a chocolate cake shake, are you kidding me? Portillo's is the best fast food anywhere, great variety and everything is good.

Portillo's was started in a Chicago suburb in 1963 in a small 6'x12' trailer and today is the largest family-owned restaurant company in the Mid-west with 46 different restaurants. Most of which are in the Chicago suburbs. Portillo's fame was originally for it's hot dogs, and even features a dog in it's logo with the word's "Portillo's Hot Dogs", but ask anyone who has ever been there and they will tell you, "get the Italian beef". I too am one of those people..... I was in Northlake for work and knew exactly where lunch was goign to be even before I made the trip. I relish at the chance to eat at a Portillo's. I got there mid-day around 2ish and the internal layout was similar to many Portillo's I have been to before. You walk up to the cashier and place your order, while you are ordering they are writing on a paper bag in some kind of Portillo-short hand. They also call out your order over an old-school type microphone/PA sytstem. I ordered my go-to meal here: the Big Beef (larger version of the Italian Beef) with sweet (green) peppers, cheddar cheese and Dipped (extra juices to make it a bit more moist), along with fries and cheese and a Large Coke. The Big Beef is not for the faint-of appetite. I have a large appetite and usually it's enough to fill me up by itself. The Italian beef here is extremely moist and tender. I don't know how they make it so. I have had many Italian beef sandwhiches at many different restaurants and they just don't compare to Portillo's. I do like the addition of the sweet peppers, you can also opt for hot peppers as well. The fries are really nothing to write home about, they are just your standard crincle-cut fries, I added cheese to them to try and spice them up a bit. they are good, but not great. You don't come here for the fries, let's just say that. Overall just another great dining experience at Portillo's. The food was as good here as it was down the road. The consistancy is uncanny, and is probably a major factor in how successfull they are.

"Get with the program, Sunshine." Spoken loudly as I was pulling away, but making sure I was still within earshot, by the short woman server... seconds after handing me my food in the drive-thru after I mistakenly held up the line for a second after I was given my change. WTF? And I was having such a good day until I visited this location. For shame, Portillo's. Please hire servers who realize they're working for the customers, not servers who think they are royalty who's time we're infringing on. Jeezaloo.

Upon entering, i noticed the revolving door...pretty cool. I dig the old school decor. It gave off that authentic American diner look. each booth had coat hangers. The serving trays have four cup holders, which is pretty cool too. I wanted an authentic Chicago style hot dog and I got it!...as far as taste. I expected it to be bigger though but it was still delicious. Fries r awesome! Oh, and Best strawberry malt I've had! The Italian beef sandwich is gooey good! I came back the day after and tried a croissant bbq chicken sandwich - a mess, which meant it was good. and i tried the chocolate cake shake... holy guacamole, super good. I dig this place in the CHI. Definitely a place to go to when visiting Chicago. Good job portillos!

  • Andrew W.

I love this Portillo's. They have a huge kitchen space in the back, so most orders are pushed through quickly. While the decor isn't as great as some other Portillo's and there's no Barnelli's inside, the food still tastes like classic Portillo's and that's definitely good enough.

  • Ken C.

I've only found one thing on their menu that they missed on (I think was a Pecan Crusted Caramel Chicken Salad). Everything else they have dialed in. They could improve on consistency of quality (sometimes spotty I'd give 5 stars if they could fix this) but overall it is my favorite fast food joint any where! The hamburgers are so awesome that adding cheese actually takes some of the magic away. The beefs are heavenly and when ordered with mozzarella and both sweet and hot peppers they're so good it's stupid!

Portillo's should offer specials on bypass surgery for the customers who eat here frequently. After eating a double bacon cheeseburger from here, I can almost feel my heart cussing me out for making it work so hard. Still one of my favorites when I crave fatty, unhealthy American fare. Nothing real complicated. Your traditional burgers, dogs, polish, beefs, chicken sandwiches, and salads for those looking to live past 60. And yes, everybody raves about their chocolate cake. Because you have to wash down all that greasy food with something, what better than chocolate cake featuring their not-so-secret ingredient: mayonnaise.

Food is ok. service is ok.

To me, Portillo's defines Chicago in many ways and I love it, love it, love it. Everything they put out for the most part is fantastic and the fast paced, efficient way Portillo's runs is akin to that well oiled machine we're always on about....it's sort of reflective of the people who work in this fair City of ours imo. Get it done. Get it done right. And get it done on time (no matter how crazy busy it may get or what is thrown at you). Though I love the dogs, Italian beef, tamales, french fries, chopped salads etc, a HUGE sleeper here is their grilled Yellowfin Tuna. It is ridiculous and bc it's flame broiled, you get to enjoy the flavor of that smokey grill that is always emanating when you enter the place. I can't say enough about the place and the good thing is that every single location i've been to (at least 5+), they all run and produce the same excellent food in the same, efficient way. It's the Chicago way, right?! (well, with the exception of the way our completely inept and inefficient City Government is run).

  • Joy S.

It's a Portillo's. It's packed inside, busy drive-thru outside. Great Chicago hot dogs. Delicious chopped salad ~ get extra dressing, you won't regret it. Amazing chocolate cake shake w/ chunks of cake in your shake. Love the cheese fries.

  • Erik H.

Someone up there must like me, because I can get the best Italian Beef and second best hot dog in 31 locations across Chicagoland. Heck yes. I'm reviewing the Northlake one because it's the one I've been to most often, but essentially it's all the same (other than the decor... I do enjoy trying to figure out what decade I'm in every time I go to a new Portillo's). If there's a rare occasion I don't get a dog or a beef - dipped, with sweet pepper - their sandwiches will fill me up quite tastily, especially the ham and cheddar croissant. But that's happened like twice. Oh and don't forget to end the meal with a slice of their chocolate cake or the not-so-secret-anymore chocolate cake milkshake. I somehow get a weirdly pleasant heartburn every time I do, and I like to ride that high all the way home.

This Portillo's location is just as good as the rest. I've been here numerous times, and the food is always fresh, the service is good, and prices are great as usual. The location is a little awkward to get in and out of, traffic-wise, but it's not too bad. My favorite are the fries. They're always cooked perfectly, and I am really spoiled now, because I won't really eat other fast food fries after having Portillo's fries.

  • Ben H.

    (4)
  • Martha Z.

I swear that today when I ate my favorite Italian Beef sandwich from Portillo's that they CHANGED their hot peppers. They were 'bigger' and they tasted different. Anyone else notice that?

Yes!!

If you are looking for a new lunch spot, you have to check out the local Portillos. I This one is good, pretty darn good. Decent hot dogs and Maxwell Street Polish that was really good. I wasn't overwhelmed as I have been at other locations. I will need to keep coming back and see if it can rise to 5 stars.

It's a Portillo's. It's packed inside, busy drive-thru outside. Great Chicago hot dogs. Delicious chopped salad ~ get extra dressing, you won't regret it. Amazing chocolate cake shake w/ chunks of cake in your shake. Love the cheese fries.

  • Margie W.
