They have bottled hospitality and comfort, and are selling it. The lodge is the essence of friendliness and warmth. The food is phenomenal. I would rate the food, easily as a 9 or a 9.5 out of 10 in terms of quality and presentation. The meals they serve are, in and of themselves, a reason to stay at the Heartland Lodge. The chef clearly knows what she is doing, and that is obvious in how perfectly executed everything was, from the homemade pecan cinnamon muffins for pre-breakfast to the apricot glaze on the pork fillets at dinner. Our room was exceptionally clean and well kept. Nothing felt run down or old, like at some places that are outdoorsy. You can lock your room from the inside, but you cannot lock it from the outside, so you have to trust everyone you're staying with. I found this a little odd at first, but I was able to meet the other folks (about 25 - 30 people) who were also staying there, and I realized that I had to get out of the "big hotel" mindset, and realize these people were all about the least likely group who would steal from me that I could think of. Also, the staff appears to be a pretty big extended family who have been running a hunting lodge and resort for probably at least 100 years, so I quickly put any hesitation about that to rest. We got rained out, and they were very accommodating about adjusting our activities to the next weekend (we're only about 1.5 hours away). Little things like not having locks on the doors made the experience even more refreshing and communal. This is the type of place you can just put away the cell phones and electronics and relax. I only stayed one night, and I feel totally refreshed. My wife, who is very "indoorsy" as Jim Gaffigan puts it, also loved the experience, people, and facilities. Keep in mind that this IS "country;" it takes a while to get there from the highway (maybe 30-40 minutes), is very remote, and there are no TVs or phones in the rooms. With that said, I couldn't be happier with my experience and will definitely go back in the next year or two when I need to refresh my batteries.

Beautiful Facility, if you can find it. More a hunting lodge, then B&B. Food service is a major problem as very limited on site a little of anything close.

We had a great stay and were treated like family from the first minute there. The ATV trails ranged from easy to moderate with a few tougher sections but we were able to get through them all on our 2-up. The best part about the trails is there aren't many riders. I think the day we were there probably 20-30 riders on about 1500 acres. We pretty had the trails to ourselves.

Do not buy a gift certificate from them. GC's by law in Illinois are supposed to be valid for years - they give you 3 months. Fortunately I was able to use it within the 3 months but they didn't mention it when purchased.

Wonderful place to unwind. We rode their horses and enjoyed the off road trails. The rooms are comfortable and the food is first rate. You are treated like family the moment you open the door.
