I live about 15 miles away from Fleckenstein's Bakery. Not really that far but I have a couple of closer bakeries. Lately, I have been disappointed with the bakery I usually go to. Things do not seem fresh. I had heard good things about Fleckenstein's and I saw on their website that they make Dutch apple pies, so I called and requested that they hold one for me. When I arrived it seemed like my pie was the only one left and it was still hot. It was for my son's birthday dessert, he is not a cake fan. It was delicious. After having it, my husband declared it the best Dutch apple pie he had ever had and we all agreed. I look forward to going back and trying some of their other products. If you are interested in trying this place out - you either need to get their early or call and reserve what you want. I picked my pie up around 10:45 or 11am on a Thursday and the place was out of donuts.

The absolute BEST buttercream frosting ever!!! If they sold it by the tub, I would buy it and eat it!! Oh yeah.....and the cakes UNDER the frosting Rock too! I also LOVE their kolaches.....they are amazing.....I'm drooling just typing about them. My only complaint is that they don't seem to carry them every day. If you pass it up when you drive by on LaGrange, do an immediate U-turn! You won't be disappointed!

I used to work here back in High School & can truly say it was a fun experience. They have such a high standard of quality & cleanliness you wouldn't believe it! Their strict code of conduct & discipline in the workplace stays with me to this day. To say that this is a family business is an understatement. It is truly their passion! Sons Ray & Ross have gone all out to keep their family's business up to date & thriving while maintaining the high level of quality that their founding parents, Bob & Joan, built their business upon in 1978. It was no surprise to me that they were expanding their bakery while other competitors in nearby Tinley Park & New Lenox were closing their doors for good. I think it goes without saying that their products are the best and with being made fresh, the same day, with no artificial preservatives..... Well, the early bird gets the worm. Those who do find themselves up early will be rewarded with a great selection of pastries & sweets. If there's something you really want, then I suggest placing an order a day or two ahead of time so you don't have to rush in there at the crack of dawn. If you need a specialty cake, don't hesitate. There's almost nothing they won't do, (in good taste). I hear that they're going to be opening up a new location in downtown New Lenox, near the train station, which makes it a great location to grab a coffee & doughnut before catching the train. My only hope is that people won't loose their appetite from the foul stench of the sewage treatment plant less than a block away!

The cake was delicious and the bakery really worked with us to use a cake topper that my mother had bought in Italy and wanted to use. It was very delicate and hard to stabilize. The cake was absolutely perfect and they were very accommodating considering we completely revamped our cake design at our meeting a month out. My only issue, and the reason for 4 stars (I wavered giving 3 since it really was a pretty big mistake), is they really screwed up the color of our flowers on the cake. My mother-in-law gave them a color swab of the primary purple color for our wedding so they could match the flowers. Although the cake was stunning and absolutely nummy, the flowers were such a dark purple they looked black. This was not the color of our dresses and really ruined the overall affect of our cake. Other than that, we were very pleased!

I have never been to the bakery but I went to a wedding last night and they had cupcakes from this bakery on the sweets table. Hands down, the best cupcakes I have ever had. Perfect size, perfect cake, perfect amount of frosting and fillings. Unbelievably good and I am not a big cupcake person! This bakery's cupcakes blow away any other ones I have had in the past, including the overrated ones from Crumbs, sprinkles, and magnolia in the city. I will definitely stop in when I am in the sw burbs which I am quite frequently.

I have been going to this bakery for years! AMAZING! The mini cupcakes are out of this world!

Every time I come here I discover something new. The cookies are INSANE and I can't go get donuts without grabbing some cookies for later. ;-) The plain old fashioned donut is my favorite. It's so nice and crunchy on the outside, perfect with coffee. I haven't tried the cakes here yet but I expect them to be great like everything else. Chocolate frosted cake donuts are top notch. Tip: Get in before 9 am on weekends to take advantage of more donut flavor options.

I haven't been to the actual store (my waistline is happy about that) but I've ordered by phone and had someone pick up: cookies, and cupcakes. OMGGG the cupcakes are out of this world. Perfectly soft with not-too-rich frosting. You can get them filled or not (fill fill!). Such cool flavors. The pina colada ones have a cherry on top and a little palm tree decoration!! The tea cookies were no different than other polish bakeries on archer imho. Scour the website, and be prepared to be quick when you order by phone. They are busy people, so not mean, just rushed... They also have hamburger and hot dogs buns. Better than the grocery store of course, but not my favorite. They are nicely fluffed and packaged tho.

One of my favorite things about my birthday is that I get to celebrate it with a cake from Fleckenstein's! I switch it up from year to year, but I generally prefer a chocolate cake with either strawberries or chocolate in the middle. I always have the whip cream frosting. It is light and not too sweet. Perfection! Fleckenstein's also has superb cupcakes - mostly of the filled variety. The butter cookies are melt in your mouth delicious and if you get up early enough, make sure you get a donut. The chocolate with chocolate frosting is my number one. It seems impossible, but I do still have some menu items to try. They have every bakery item you could ever want all at reasonable prices. It makes it very hard to travel north on LaGrange road and not stop in.

I think all the other reviews sum it up quite nicely. This is a great bakery to get real desserts ( not the junk from the grocery store). Everything is fresh and it is PACKED in the morning so give your self some time. The staff moves everyone as fast as possible but there is a limit to everything. Just close your eyes and point. You will probably be happy with your selection.

I am on a quest to find the best in the SW suburbs and so far I have done that. As far as bakeries and sweet treats are concerned, I believe I have found a major winner here, They have a great variety here and the staff is very friendly, helpful, and patient. I could not make up my mind at all, however I am sure whatever I got would have been amazing. The prices are very reasonable for the price you pay. Next time I need my fix I will be back again.

I am updating my review of Fleckenstein's because of how my life had changed and therefore my sugar fix is different here now. I am sure that their glazed donuts are still wonderful but I no longer leave for work between 6 and 6:45 am. This is a huge plus but I haven't seen one of their glazed donuts since I retired from teaching full time. That's OK, I think there should be a reward for early risers who work 5 days a week. That used to be me and sometimes the donuts were what got me out of the house in the morning. Lately, my obsession are their cupcakes. Yes, I know there are boutique cupcake places which are very cute and make delish $4.00 cupcakes. Fleckenstein's is more old school and they make amazing cupcakes for under $2.00. Yes, you read that right. I have brought them to football games. (Hey, cupcake tailgating is the way to go!) I have picked up a selection for when I bring dessert to parties and they are gone in a flash. They have filled ones and non filled ones and those are even cheaper. I recently had a new one there - apple pie with ice cream. It is a cinnamon cupcake with a bit of apple filling and a round ball of frosting which is very light and supposed to look like a scoop of ice cream. It was divine! I also adore their non filled Red Velvet with cream cheese frosting, we have had that for about 6 years in a row for my daughter's bday cake. This past Easter we only had cupcakes from Fleckenstein's for desserts. I bought millions of them and got cupcake boxes for people to bring home a cupcake as a sort of Easter basket. Enough about the cupcakes! They also have great wedding cakes, cookies and birthday cakes! Plus, the dinner rolls are melt in your mouth and make the best bread for a Sloppy Joe sandwich and are small enough so that you will demand seconds. In short, if you like sugar and like it baked into goodies, come here. I would show you the way but then I would be forced to buy more goodies and I have reached my quota for this month!

Nothing beats a local bakery! I've ordered many special occasion cakes and they always get rave reviews from my guests. I've also had many of the other treats - specialty cookies and cupcakes and have been amazed by the taste and quality. The workers are friendly and efficient too. Won't go anywhere else.

I finally found my new favorite bakery! Cupcakes are amazing! Cakes, cookies, donuts are so delicious. I tried this bakery a couple months ago and have used them for our birthday cakes. Highly recommend :)

Wow, What a find! We were out on Saturday and ran across this place. Fantastic! Tried some of the cookies - unbelievably good!. I wish we lived closer - we would make this "our bakery".

Update: Since having them bake cupcakes for my wedding shower, I have had three friends/family also use them for their showers! Once you taste their items, you are hooked. They are so reasonable and amazing quality! Thank you again!

Fresh pastries! So delicious, and this service is really good. Definitely better than any chain donut place (Dunkin, Krispy Kreme, etc).

Holy crap! What a find in the south burbs!!! Was in need of a new bakery for the holidays and started looking east as my area is lacking in anything that resembles a legitimate bakery (sorry, grocery chains don't count) This bakery caught my eye and I placed an order for a cheesecake and a chocolate creme pie. Service was casual and professional and they did a great job managing the crowd on 12/24. Also picked up some cannolis as I couldn't resist the urge. Everything was top notch! From the cheesecake to the chocolate creme pie and to the cannolis (unbelievable!) Prices for the most part were affordable as the 8'' inch cheesecake and chocolate creme pie came to $27. My only minor gripe were that they didn't display the prices behind the glass counter and the cannolis were pricier than what I'm used to at $3 & $3.59 for one dipped in chocolate.

Excellent flavor as well as aesthetic designs, we used them for our custom pastries for the gender party and I would not hesitate to use them again for a special event.

The boyfriend got a birthday cake for me last week and he was very pleased. He reports that they are very courteous and helpful, and he was also happy with the price for the size of the cake. They also personalized it (I don't know how much the cake was, but it certainly LOOKED expensive). I thought it was lovely-- chocolate layer cake with white buttercream frosting and sprinkles on the sides. The cake itself was really tasty, but the frosting was sort of meh. It seems that too often, to get the right consistency in frosting to work with it and have it be sturdy, it has to be grainy and kind of gross. So I've been eating just the cake parts and throwing the stiff chunks of frosting straight to the trash. Even so, I would order from them in the future.

We ordered our wedding cake from Fleckenstein's and Mr. Fleckenstein himself worked with us. He was so helpful and pleasant all the way through the process, explaining options and the timeline. He took pictures I brought in and created a gorgeous cake that tasted unbelievable. Their buttercream frosting is beyond compare. He even was able to create orange flavored frosting for the groom's red velvet cupcakes, which was something I didn't know was possible. The guests raved about everything and even though we ordered a lot of extra cake just to be safe, there wasn't much left over because it was all eaten or taken home. That's the sign of fantastic cake!

Just got my wife's birthday cupcakes here and doubled the amount she said she wanted. 6 cupcakes for 4 people, is she crazy? I got 6 lemon and 6 strawberry and this gave us 3 leftovers. Damn, I should have bought more. Cakes are equally good - the lemon torte is my birthday favorite. Too bad Steven M doesn't know baked goods, not only are they definitely made here but they're great. The plastic, Stevoo, is for the case so you can pick one up if you don't think ahead and preorder. When you preorder and pick them up you will get the all important cardboard box. And taste! And the prices are fair and reasonable, way below anything in the city for much fresher, tastier treats. Not sure how Steven is getting prices through the roof unless he shops at the Hostess factory outlet. My wife has probably been to every bakery in the Chicago area and these cupcakes are her favorites, trust her judgment or my waistline. Fleckentstein's rocks.

They have messed up my orders twice! Once I asked for cream cheese and strawberry filling for my daughters birthday cake and they did half of my cake with strawberries and the other cream cheese. I was upset when I sliced and only saw strawberries and than my husband sliced from the other side and only saw cream cheese. Another time there was a confusion about for how many the cake I was going to order would be and they ended up give me a full sheet of cake. My husband picked it up and had no idea I had not ordered a cake that big. BUT even with those two messed up orders the cakes were delicious and my family and friends love them. I would not go anywhere else for my kids birthday cakes. Their cupcakes are delicious and I had some cherry tarts the other day that were my gosh so so good! Doughnuts are pretty good but I think their jelly filled and Bavarian filled doughnuts are too sweet. Girls in the morning rush after 5am are fabulous! Friendly and fast service. Coffee to go is good too. Sometimes I go in just for that in the mornings instead of gas station coffee that is not that great.

  • Lynn B.

I've been going here for years and everything is fresh and wonderful! If you are looking for anything sweet, this is the place to go!! I've never been disappointed. Love the donuts, croissants ( and so excited they started making chocolate :) Thanks!!), sweet rolls, coffee cakes, cakes... The earlier you go, the better selection, so go early if you are looking for anything in particular. Prices are a bit high, but you get what you pay for, and I totally think it's worth it. Enjoy!!

I don't care how cheap a big-box bakery in a store can be; it will never entice me enough to not get my cakes, doughnuts, and pastries from Fleckensteins! This is a high quality establishment that prides itself on superior products and excellent service!

    (5)
  • E J H.

Best in the south burbs. I'm just a simple bakery consumer: plain or glazed doughnuts, fruit-filled pastries, etc. it's nice to eat fresh and food that tastes good unlike the big store attempts a baking. To bland and wasteful. Check um out.

  • Gina L.

Cupcakes, cuppie-cakes yum yum yum! The price is right to grab a bunch to share with friends. They are known for their Red Velvet but the Turtle and the Duble Chocolate were great too. They are filled cupcakes with good frosting on top. Also brought home Cherry and Strawberry Fritters, good too.

Unfortunately for me you have to get to here early to get the best pickings of their freshly made bakery items. Specifically their-worth the groggy pre-sunrise trip to wait in line-donuts. The only time I see 5am is on my way home from the bar. Being in no shape to enter a bakery, although most likely craving cookies, I wouldn't do that to the people of Fleckenstein's. I remember as a kid being especially good on a Saturday night so my parents could get enough sleep and agree to get Fleckenstein's donuts for breakfast. Waking up to that blue and white box meant a good morning. You could savor them all day too. They stay fresher longer than Dunkin's so you don't have to eat them all when you open the box. If you want to impress the people in your office, get up a bit earlier, spend a few extra bucks and bring everyone a dozen of these puppies. You will be Employee of the Month in no time. I definitely agree with Patricia. If there was a rumor you were going to have Fleckenstein's cake at your birthday, you suddenly trumped the kid-with-the-pool in the grade school social scene. I recently went there to grab a dozen cookies for a gift.... er I mean 8 cookies... by the time I got to my destination. One of these days I will be up early enough to dodge the flying pigs and get my hands on a freshly made donut.

I've never actually been in here because it's well out of my stomping grounds but they've been brought into my office a few times and they are EPIC. They have this pastry that has strawberry filling and glaze and it's amazing. I certainly can't speak to their cakes or anything but their pastries are truly delish and my ass is not looking forward to the next time that they make their way into the office!

    (4)
  • Dennis B.

I should not tell you this but on Thursday's they make a apple dumpling pastry that is so good I buy them 4 of them and keep them in the fridge for the rest of the week. They are very good. But if you get there before I do they will be sold out. All there donuts and pastry's are the best here.

    (5)
  • Aris F.

Solid neighborhood bakery, the kind that is all too rare these days, most of them having gone the way of the dodo. My favorites are probably the donuts, fresh and moist, and to be had for a fair price. Get there early because they close fairly early in the afternoon. (The parking lot is full and there can be a long line on Sundays at 7:30am-ish, which tells you just how popular this place is.)

First off, everyone reading this, ignore Dakota's review. They are miserable, wretched, and b*tch about everything. Read Dakota's other reviews, you'll see. Been coming here for years, always good pastries. And if you're a salesman type, and bring in donuts to the shop/office people you sell to, DO NOT, EVER, bring in those blessed Dunkin' Donuts. Stop at a REAL bakery, OK? Ugh, I swear the next salesman that drops off three boxes of DD to our shop WILL GET BOUNCED. Stop here if you're in the Lincolnway area. The Danishes wrock!

A friend bought me a carrot cake from Fleckenstein's. I think I've died and gone to heaven! Absolutely the best carrot cake -- or possibly any cake -- I've ever had. I wish I lved closer (it's about 30 miles from me), but it's probably just as well that I don't, or I'd weigh 500 lbs.!

My family and I have been going to Fleckenstein's Bakery in Mokena for years now. We think they have the BEST bakery cookies that we have had anywhere! The cookies are sooo moist, light and extremely delicious tasting. They are not hard or old tasting or flavorless. If this was just a cookie store I would give them a 5 plus rating but as a complete bakery with donuts, cakes, breads, candy, drinks and etc, I can only give them 4 stars. So if you are ever heading out on I-80 in the Orland Park, Frankfort, Mokena area you have to stop at Fleckenstein's bakery for some out of this world cookies. I guarantee it will be worth the trip!

My family used to consistently order from orland bakery for as long as I can remember (litterally the same type of cake since I was 2 it just kept getting bigger lol). They started going to Fleckensteins about 5 years ago and we have been ordering most all family birthday cakes from there (I have 6 brothers and sisters, both my parents, my brothers and my better halves, nieces a lot of cakes every year). the service itself has always been good, however over the past 2 years the quality of the product has gone down hill to the point we will no longer be using them for anything. In June we had 3 birthday cakes all ordered on for the same day (brother, me and my better half), and we had to take and bring my cake back because it looked like a 3 year old had made it (Not kidding and I was pissed because I am a fat guy!!!) The atomic cake we ordered was completely lopsided, the decorations on the outside were no where near the professional quality one would expect when paying that much for a cake, it was missing layers of filling too! Needless to say we will be returning to our old bakery of choice and I highly recommend you do the same.

I just returned form a wedding consultation where I found the owner to be amazingly helpful. He was open to decorating the cake in the unique way I wanted using web site pictures and suggestions. Choice of cakes and fondant or buttercream were all an option. The fondant taste excellent (like marshmellow vanilla cream). I plan to go with this Flecenstein's just based on the service, cake tasting and overall charm of a local backery. Prices were very reasonable. see their web site, but do not be afraid to come in with your own ideas, they are open for any ideas you might have in shapes, colors and variety of decorating ideas!

This place has been around forever. As a kid, I remember Fleckenstein's being the best thing about going to church on Sunday. Today, we still get cakes and donuts and when I see the white box with the blue lettering I still get excited. Pricey but worth it!

I've been coming to this place since I was in kindergarten, literally. I have memories of my mom taking me here before going to school when I was fourth grade. I would always get strawberry milk and a croissant...and damn it, their croissants are still friggin awesome. Great birthday cakes. Amazing cookies. Damn fine early morning donuts if yer ever in the middle of Mokena/Nowhere.

    (5)
  • Carly L.

They have the best doughnuts that I have ever had. Also, their homemade candy is pretty good too if you ever get a chance to try it. I would also recommend their giant sugar cookies with icing. They are usually themed (i.e. bowling pins, Cubs, hearts, shamrocks, etc). I think the price is reasonable for the quality they produce...which is amazing!

  • Patricia K.

I remember as a kid, you weren't cool unless you had a Fleckenstein's Bakery cake at your birthday party. Even now, I know a lot of people that still go to Fleckenstein's for their goodies for their events. From the sampling I have done, it still holds up to the wonderful memories I had as a child.

The first time I tried a cake from Fleckenstein's Bakery was at the bridal shower my sister hosted for me last June. She served a white cake with buttercream frosting and a strawberry filling. Wow. What a delicious cake! It was memorable enough for me to consider driving all the way from Chicago to Mokena this past weekend to pick up a sugar-free white cake with sugar-free buttercream frosting and filling. I needed to find one for my in-law's 30th wedding anniversary since my FIL is diabetic. Based on a random Google search for bakeries that offered SF cakes, I found Fleckenstein's menu. I was nervous that the cake wouldn't taste very good and have a weird after taste that most sugar substitutes have, but I can confirm this cake was was worth the drive. The guests and my in-laws really enjoyed it!

I have been here several times. The cookies are really good. But very expensive. I wanted to get a cake here, but they were in plastic containers. I don't think that they were even made here. They were like grocery store cakes. Except the price was through the roof. Tasted about the same. Their mini cheese cakes are good. It's no Webers.

I have the rare gift of having a now six-year-old brother with whom I more or less share a birthday. They're technically two days apart, but they're always celebrated on the same day, so for all intents and purposes, we share a birthday. The LB and I also share a mutual love for Star Wars so when it came time to pick a cake for us, Fleckenstein's was the perfect place in the southwest burbs. We got an awesome layered, half chocolate half yellow cake with banana filling. It was decorated, of course, with a picture of Vader (his favorite) and Yoda (mine). Their ability to decorate is really second to none around there. If you want a fancy looking cake, look no further. But in the end, who care about how it looks, how does it taste? Delicious. Fluffy, moist cake, frosting that didn't have that overly sweet fake taste to it, and the banana filling was... well banana filling but it complimented everything else well. Orland Bakery is closer to my parents and also makes a pretty great cake, but Fleckenstein's is just phenomenal. I haven't tasted a better cake anywhere. For an occasional treat, it's an absolute delight.

My family has ordered a fair amount of birthday cakes from Fleckenstein's, and we've never been disappointed. Full flavors, awesome fillings, and excellent whipped cream frosting! Highly recommended.

They've been in business forever for a reason. My office orders their donuts/pastries/cakes/packzis/cookies all the time, and they always go fast. I also ordered my wedding cake from here and it was absolutely delicious. I talked with Mr. Fleckenstein himself to place the order and he was very friendly. The cake looked great and was so good I think my husband walked around stealing leftover pieces off our guests' tables at the reception.

For over 15 years, in my experience, Fleckenstein's Bakery has the best bakery in the Southwest Suburbs! Never had a bad cake made for us over many birthday parties for our kids over the years. It is a family favorite. Highly recommended!

  • Dakota B.

These people are insane. IN SANE. Nothing I have had has ever tasted fresh, EVER. While it doesn't taste STALE, it certainly has a boxed cake/MASS commercially produced taste to it. When my husband and I were planning our wedding, they were very difficult to work with. They have very oddball hours for wedding consultations and what I believe to be OVERLY strict rules concerning same. It's not as though the don't have regular hours. I would understand if this were a bakery that specialized in elaborate cakes. I would understand this if they exclusively made wedding and special occasion cakes. I would understand this if the cakes were good or the cake design options were impressive. What they featured were rather out of date cake styles featuring sloppy student level work compared to other bakeries we visited. Needles to say we did not purchase our cake there. Overall I'm not sure what the hype is about.
