I was introduced to this magnificent restaurant by some friends a few months ago, and I have yet to even come close to disappointment. Delicious and filling food, attentive and friendly service, and a great atmosphere are more than complimented by their reasonable prices. This is a regular spot for my friends and me, and I hope it will be for you, too.

After a pretty long drive from Toronto, we briefly unloaded all of our stuff at our motel and needed to find a place to eat, STAT! After all, I was pretty famished...11 hours of driving will do that to you, especially forgoing lunch in lieu of making good time. After asking the girl at the front desk for some local joints (she was lovely but I didn't care for her recos) I googled "best restaurants in Marion IL" and with Thai-D at the top of Yelp and TripAdvisor, we decided that they both couldn't be wrong...and they weren't! After a bit of a struggle finding the place (our GPS led us astray for the SECOND time in Marion!) we finally found it in a fairly nondescript strip mall and wandered in. We were very warmly welcomed, seated and served by Erin, who was fantastic. She gave us her recommendation (I'm a regular Thai foodie, my mother not so much) and if her definition of what is "hot" isn't quite the same as mine, I'll forgive her this one little thing. My Pad Kee Mao with Tofu was truly fantastic, even if I wish I had gotten an 8 or 9 instead of a 5 on the spiciness meter! Oh well, she didn't know that I have a borderline hot sauce addiction. Mum enjoyed her (much milder) chicken Pad Thai and I also loved their house "Thai-D Salad"...a fantastic appetizer. Also got a free desert by checking in on Yelp (it pays to do so) and went with the very refreshing coconut ice cream. All in all, a fantastic meal. The place itself is clean, brightly lit and actually the antithesis of most of the good Thai places I've been to...for whatever reason, I've found that the slightly seedier looking Thai restaurants have the best food but Thai-D was not only delicious but very...well, tidy. So although Southern Illinois may not scream "amazing Thai food", I was very pleasantly surprised. It's better than a lot of places I've tried in much bigger cities. I may not stopover again in Marion anytime soon but if I am even remotely close, I would go out of my way to try Thai-D again. It's that good.

Thai D is absolutely fantastic and is by far my favorite restaurant in the area. The food is always fresh and delicious and the staff is always friendly and attentive. If you're new to eating Thai food and feel overwhelmed by the menu then I suggest getting the Pad Thai. You can get your choice of meat to go with your noodles but I always go with shrimp because they give you plenty of shrimp and it's tasty. Pad Thai comes with crushed peanuts on the side and it really adds to the dish if you sprinkle them on top. If I could give Thai D six stars I would because it is that good. You have to eat here.

We love this place. We try to eat here 2-3x a month. We both love spicy, and order level 8 or level 10. I usually 10, and he is usually 8. We always ask for Cindy as our server. She is just our favorite, always knows what we need before we ask. I have had Thai taste once, and it was not memorable. Though the location is small, it's still just all around my favorite restaurant in southern Illinois.

I was leery of Thai food so far away from a major metropolis, but Thai D did not disappoint. It was easy to find off I-57, located in a strip mall near the big shopping mall. We met friends for lunch. The Pad Thai chicken was portioned enough for two. Plus they give you soup and an egg roll with the lunch specials. Food was good, as was the brewed ice tea. Prices very reasonable. Free parking.

What a great find ! There were3 of us for dinner with varying heat levels. Each dish was served better than we could have expected ! The service was prompt and the menu was completely explained. Looking forward to coming back on our next visit.

Dropped in off of the interstate for a quick lunch - - - it was delicious and quick. My wife had the pad thai and I went with the pad pak, I personally think my dish was better but both of us were quite happy. They ask you how spicy you want your meal prepared so they can match you taste preference. We do not drive this direction often but would definitely stop again.

Lunch portions are fuckin enormous, reasonably priced and tasty as hail! Service was super quick and friendly. FIVE FUCKIN STARS BITCH!

Good food! I really enjoy eating here. What would set it apart and make it #1? A little more salt to the food. Spices and chilis are great. Salt. :) I'm being nitpicky I know but that is what I think will make the food superior, not just good. It already is!

I love this place more than words could possibly say. The food is always amazing and the staff is very attentive. I try to come here at least once a month.

Stopped on our way from Nashville to Chicago. Sooo good. Kids loved the mild chicken pad thai, I had the medium beef pad thai and husband had the pad king. Great food and service.

Finding Thai-D in Southern Illinois was a pleasant surprise. When a colleague suggested having a dinner meeting at Thai-D I was skeptical but agreed. I love Thai food but, after living in Chicago for 10 years, I have high expectations and have been disappointed with most Thai food I have tried in Central and Southern Illinois. However, the Pad Thai at Thai-D was fabulous. It reminded me of my favorite Thai place in Chicago. It tasted fresh with just the perfect amount of flavor and spice. I enjoyed my visit to Thai-D so much I ordered take out the next time I was visiting the Marion area. Flavorful, affordable, simply delicious food. I consider Thai-D to be one of the top 2 restaurants in Marion.

A refreshingly fantastic Thai restaurant in Southern Illinois. I dropped into Thai-D during a road trip and was pleasantly surprised at such great quality Thai food. My personal favorite dish was the Tom Kha soup at level 5 spiciness but probably could have went up to a 7 or 8. It tasted almost as good as the Tom Kha I had in Thailand which is super impressive as it can be very difficult to get some of the fresh ingredients that originate from Thailand - bottom line, impressed! Their menu selection was pretty standard for Thai restaurants and they also have a few non-traditional items such as burgers and fried chicken in case for whatever reason you didn't want a Thai dish. The portion sizes were very healthy and came at a very reasonable price. The ambiance was very relaxing and the establishment could probably hold about 50 people comfortably. We didn't have an issue getting a seat on a weekday night and the staff and owner were extremely pleasant and accommodating to our table throughout the night. If you're in the area I'd recommend stopping by as I don't think you'll find much better Thai food around.

I get the distinct vibe that I could have ordered any number of things and had a great meal here. First off, they did a top-notch job with the Crab Rangoons. As someone who had not-too-stellar Crab Rangoons fairly recently, the common pitfalls of (1) overcooking the pastry and (2) skimping on the imitation crab were skillfully avoided. Furthermore, they absolutely nailed the dipping sauce. Tempted to call this a five-star dish. The fried rice was also really quite something. I love that this place is willing to serve food that is probably too spicy for your own good if you ask for it. I myself stayed in the more reasonable range of around 5 (which they call "hot") and it was not lacking in heat. I'm sure the diehard spice addict could be readily sated here if they headed into the 8+ range. I wish more places in this part of the country were willing to serve this kind of heat. More than the spice, though, the ingredients were fresh, and the sauce was inventively flavorful. Yum.

Flavorful food, friendly service, and nice looking place. The crazy noodles were great and the spice level of four was perfect. Honestly, very impressive and unexpected to find so far South in IL.

We recently were told about Thai-D. Since we don't get to Marion much, we were passing by and decided to try it. Greeted at the door and seated immediately, the wait staff was wonderful and accommodating to new customers, any problems with the menu don't hesitate to ask. The food great and service wonderful don't miss the chance!

This is my third time eating here on vacation. I have tried numerous area restaurants to awful and decent results. This place is still the best in the area. Service is great and the food is so fresh and yummy!

  • Sherri B.

Absolutely the best Thai food between Chicago and St Louis. As fa as spice level. 3 is almost nothing. I can't do a lot of spice. But 5 is perfect and they call it hot?? If you really want spice you need to go at least a 7.

The menu was simple and straightforward, with many dishes that looked good. I ended up ordering the Pa-Nang Curry. For desert, I ordered the intriguing purple sticky rice served with Thai custard... it was actually really good!

Awesome! Food was great! Service was great! Atmosphere is relaxing! I would eat here everyday if my diet allowed it ;) F.Y.I. Spice level is spicy at 3 (on a scale from 1-10). I had a 2 for mine and it was bearable and still tasty.

Delicious! This is a regular spot when we got out to eat. Service is always great and the food tastes fresh. Reasonably priced and very, very clean. I usually get the pineapple fried rice and crab rangoon. The entrees are very large for what you pay. I've liked pretty much everything I have had here entree wise. The appetizers can verge on the mediocre though. Their chicken wings and crab rangoon are both very good while the summer rolls, fried tofu, and calamari I would stay away from.

Nice atmosphere, excellent service, and the curries are awesome. Did not care for the Pad Thai.

I have been craving Thai food and specifically tom Tom, I would say that the Tom yum was disappointing it was anything but Tom yum, the red curry was nice and we took the left over had it next day and it was better we enjoyed it, the service was good and the place was very neat. Oh I come from the Middle East so 7 wasn't spicy at all for me so if you like hot spicy go for 8 or 9 otherwise stick to 5 which wasn't spicy at all. Thanks

Best Thai food around, and for that matter most places. The Pad Thai is superb. The lunch menu is very affordable with an iced tea included. Remember to get fried ice cream or coconut ice cream for desert. I highly recommend Thai-D.

Tried this place again for lunch and their free soup was uber yummy! I must have gotten it on an off day before. Chicken broth with veggies and a nice blend of salt and pepper. Overall to make it short, their service will always sucks and the noodles are always a little too al dente (undercooked), but the food is authentic and good! Again, best Thai food around these parts!

  • Cassie M.

Everything I have eaten here is tasty but I especially enjoy the E9 (Pad pak) with tofu. I would also recommend the chicken wings as an appetizer...they are some of the best I've had. Their prices are pretty reasonable; two dinners, a soup and appetizer with drinks cost us $36. Pretty standard for Southern Illinois. My only complaint would be that the spice levels vary WAY too much from day to day. And the way the dishes are prepared vary from lunch to dinner.

Most disgusting place I have ever eaten at. This place should be condemned! My food smell, tasted and looked like dog food! How does an Asian restaurant not know how to cook noodles! Food was so bland such a Disgrace smdh meat wasn't very good either if u would even call it meat. Diners beware! I had terrible indigestion after eating here :(

Came here for dinner with friends to celebrate a birthday. It's located in a strip mall in the parking lot of Walmart. The place wasn't too busy. It's on the smaller side but nonetheless, the decor was nice. The hostess was friendly and we were seated promptly. The menu isn't huge but there are various items to choose from including noodles, rice dishes, curries, salads and appetizers. Here's what we ordered: -chicken satay: ordinary -summer roll: bland - nothing special -fried calamari - tiny portion for $9 -pad thai with chicken and shrimp: my dish and my fav - it was flavorful and the portion was huge with plenty of chicken and shrimp throughout. Shrimp was perfectly cooked. The crushed peanuts and lime juice made it! -roasted duck curry: overly salty/sweet for my taste and duck was overcooked -traditional noodle soup: got level 5 spice and wasn't spicy at all and broth could've used more seasoning -sticky rice with custard: good but some of the rice was a bit too al dente so it was hard to eat I know I slammed most of the dishes we had but the service totally made up for it. Unlike other reviewers, the service I experienced was amazing. The server was friendly, knowledgable and patient with such a large party. Additionally she was very attentive with refills and checking in on us. They have these neat buttons that you can press to get the servers attention which is clever. Reminded me of button you can press on an airplane lol. Overall, I enjoyed my dish a great deal and would definitely come back for it and the outstanding service.

Had the chicken pad Thai, was good but I had better. Marion is a really small town with not much going on, this restaurant had a fair number of people for a Monday night . Wait staff were very nice, welcoming and well dressed , service was also good

Great Thai place in a small town. We were visiting from the Rockford, IL area (5 hours north of Marion) and were blown away by the professionalism and great-tasting Thai food at this restaurant. Everyone is very polite, the prices are great, and the atmosphere is welcoming.

My favorite place to eat within an hour driving distance from me. They have a gluten free menu, which makes things really easy. My favorite dish of theirs is their Pad Thai, with extra veggies and fried tofu. Super filling, super delicious. The only time we go is for lunch, when they have their fantastic lunch specials. My husband and I will often ask for no soup, because we aren't fans. More often then not when you request no soup before you sit down they will give you an extra egg roll. So remember that next time you dine in. I live 45 minutes away and this is the restaurant I check in at more often then any other. My only complaint is that it's not closer to me.

Thai-D has two things that I love: Food that comes to the table burn-your-tongue hot. To me it says the kitchen is concerned about food safety and the wait staff is concerned that I don't wait. Asian food that is truly spicy when you order it that way. My nose was runny from just my "5" level of spice on the Brocolli Delight. Definitely will visit this one again!

Love the place it's always hard to find good Asian food specially since I live in Cali. Came to visit my gf for vday and I was craving rice so I decided to come here. The food was delicious excellent service I think the only minor thing was the spicy lvl, the lvl 10 was like a lvl 3 for me other than that great place.

My absolute favorite Thai restaurant EVER (and I've tried quite a few!) I am so happy that Southern Illinois is home to Thai D - super friendly staff, delicious meals, reasonably priced, and attractive, relaxed dining area. This place is always very high on my request list when hubby asks where I'd like to go out to eat. I love Thai D!

I hate to give this place a 3-Star because it's really should be a 2-Star. The only reason for the additional star is because there really isn't another choice to eat Thai food in within 15 miles so they get the additional star. I read some of the reviews about the place being an authentic Thai food place. If you are REALLY looking for authentic Thai food this is not the place...problem is that there are none in Marion. You are better off downloading a recipe of the net and making the dish at home. The dish I got was Glass Noodle Salad - Yum Won Sen for you other Thai people. It didn't taste anything like it was supposed to. In addition to that, it was too salty and had too much sugar. My husband got the green curry which wasn't bad. I would prefer not to go here again and just drive over to Carbondale for some Thai food... or cook at home. If you want to try Thai food - and you live in Marion - go here...but if you ever visit Los Angeles, Orange County or Chicago you'll definitely have more and better options.

  • Jim N.

Best authentic thai food in all of Southern Illinois (not a big stretch). Small and cozy gives out a homey feel. They have a variety of fresh dishes all accompanied by "hot" rating of 1-10. Do get the pad thai, yum salad, and thai ice tea.

    (4)
  • Steven D.

Definitely the best Thai food in the area. It's funny that people complain about this place not having "authentic" Thai food, yet the owners are Thai and the food is cooked by Thai people. I have been eating Thai food for roughly 15 years in restaurants around the country, in Thai people's homes, in Thailand, and this is certainly authentic, and very good. Saying they don't serve authentic Thai food is like saying Burger King doesn't have authentic American food because it's slightly different from McDonald's. What you like is a matter of preference, what's "authentic" is a matter of how the food is prepared, and their food is definitely prepared likeThai food should be. The food is great, the service is exceptional, and the place is comfortable.

Pretty darn good. The drunken "crazy" noodles were delicious (if a bit on the salty side), and full of fresh vegetables. Yum.

Visited for dinner while on a long driving journey. We ordered vegetarian curries and the vegetable fried rice. The curries were delicious and the lowest spice level they offer, level three was about perfect, with a bit of a spicy kick but not overpowering. We weren't sure what to expect having eaten our Thai food in places as varied as the DC area to Bangkok and Chiang Mai. A plus for the authenticity, when I said thank you in Thai as I was leaving the response was automatic unlike some Thai places where they have no clue what you just said.

    (4)
  • natalie z.

Very impressed! The curry was perfect and they are serious about their heat levels which is hard to find. I left very satisfied. The appetizer platter and Tom Yum soup were nothing to write home about but all entrees at table were well liked.

  • TJ M.

Really good inexpensive thai food. Service was fast and great. They understood our dietary preferences and tweaked our items ordered as we wanted perfectly. Lunch menu is fairly small with under 15 items, but hey you get free egg rolls, soup and ice tea. Authenticity? Well, it was a little americanized. But hey, I don't mind that at all in a town with few asian dining options.Pad thai and Pad King were my favorites. They even make the food look gourmet. All in all a wonderful experience for the price. .

  • Shana L.

I've been here a few times and each time was great. Service is excellent and the food is even better. The atmosphere is also very inviting and comfortable. I would definitely recommend this place to everyone. It's way better than Thai Taste in Carbondale.
