Ordered my son's first birthday cake from sweet whimsy and it was a show stopper! Not only was it the star of the desert table but it was also moist and delicious. I was a little nervous about a butter cream icing in the summer for an outdoor party but the baker assured me that it would be fine and it absolutely was. We were given specific instructions and we followed them and the cake held up beautifully. Thank you sweet whimsy. I have a few events coming up and I will be passing on your contact for sure!
This is one of the best bakeries I've been into in a very long time. And don't let my Herculean physique fool you; I've been in plenty. This place is in a fantastic location. Don't say, "it's out of the way." That's the point. I don't think you could go wrong getting any of the treats from their display and a cup of coffee. Bet. I was there to taste wedding cakes and all that goes along with that. Not only was everything delicious, but the baker/owner is very professional and knows how to get you exactly what you want. This is the place for your cake. Count on it.
I have seen Sweet Whimsy change ownership 2-3 times in I think as many years, but for the most part, I've always been pleased with my purchases. I do think that some items can be overpriced sometimes. I have a real problem dolling out almost $4 for a cookie, any cookie, I don't care how good it is, unless its the size of a plate. Aside from cookies, or rather some of those prices, they carry a small variety of creative and yummy concoctions. It's a tiny shop with only a couple of spots to sit, in a shabby chic style. They (used to at least) have classes where you can watch and somewhat participate in making desserts in the kitchen, which is viewable from the main shop through a window. Any time I'm visiting and shopping in Long Grove, I insist on making a stop to see what the friendly staff are offering. My time in Long Grove is not complete unless I make my way down those stairs to Sweet Whimsy's semi hidden shop.

The wife and I were very pleased with our dining experience. The staff are very friendly and the food is outstanding. We will definitely be back!
I really was disappointed by this place. Let me first say, I was in the mood for BBQ (which is a rare occasion, maybe twice a year) and so I drove 15 minutes to this place to pickup dinner. I was first put-off by how expensive it was! But whatevs, I wanted to try it. Once I got home to eat, I was disappointed in the taste. It just wasn't that good! I won't be back. I'm sad too, cuz I was looking forward to this place. Everyone has their own tastes and opinions.... Sounds like other folks really like this place. In fact, my own Mother is a fan! So, while I will not be back, my family members may be.
Smokin T's catered our wedding and everything was absolutely perfect. The head chef, Tom, is an unbelievable chef. So many of our guests commented on how outstanding the food was. We eat here all the time whenever we are in town. The chicken is phenomenal. The Southwestern chicken and tortilla salad is another one of our favorites. All of the sides are excellent (especially the corn muffin, corn pudding, and mac and cheese).

Baked Onion Soup on a sunny but chilly Saturday...sounded like just the thing. Wrong! The soup was watery, the onions under cooked and the broth totally tasteless. Fast forward a couple hours and guess what, yep you guessed it. Stomach pain, stabbing and cramping. Enough said...the Tavern has given up on quality service and food a long time ago. Lastly, make sure that you enter through the front entrance only, if you come through the rear doors, you will pass the bathrooms and the odor that your nose will encounter will more than stave off any desire you "had" to eat there. A once great restaurant is now going through the motions. No wonder it is nearly empty.
I am a bit mixed on this review... Village Tavern is a nice place with many happy memories. Overall, this is a great place with a decent menu. Service is friendly. The live bands can be hit or miss, but are still worth checking out. On the other hand, they can be a bit pricy. For example, dinner for two consisting of sandwiches, soup, ice tea can run over $33 pre-tip... same meal at most "family" restaurants would set you back about $21. And sometimes the portions and service seem to be out of line for what you are paying.
Second trip for the AUCE fish fry. Both times fish was not very hot almost cold. Like they fry a bunch and let it sit. Service could have been better. Fish is ok when delivered hot to plate. Might skip it from now on.
