My wife and I ate here with another couple on February 27, 2010. This place has a very large menu - a wide variety arranged on the menu under the headings Appetizers, Soups, Salads, Pasta Entrees, Chicken Entrees, From the Grill, Veal Entrees and Seafood Entrees. As if that weren't enough, the waitress expertly advised us of at least a dozen nightly specials. Most items can be cooked to your liking - the chef is very accomodating. I had a grilled chicken dish, two others had fried jumbo (I'd estimate their size at 16-20 count/#) shrimp and another friend had the veal saltinbocca. All entrees were very good and come with a nice bread basket, soup AND salad, vegetable and potato, rice or pasta. The pasta side dish was entree-sized. The only item that wasn't to my liking was the sauce I ordered on my pasta side dish - described as "a creamy vodka sauce" - I try to watch my cholesterol and it was closer to soup - the pasta was totally submerged in the sauce - sort of like a macaronni/cheese/cream soup. We all took home leftovers good for at least a big lunch. Prices are reasonable - examples - Jumbo Shrimp $16.95, Salmon Filet $17.95, Baked Stuffed Shells $12.95, 8oz Filet $20.95. I look forward to returning to try some of the many other offerings. Outstanding knowledgeable service. Full bar with generous size glasses and pours.

The food is ridiculous. They have been in business since 1908 I think, a really really long time. The best Italian in this area hands down. If you go pay a little more and get one of the daily specials. It doesn't matter which one, they are all fresh each day and insanely amazing. Its not fancy inside, it's quaint like being at Nona's house. The food tastes like how she made it too, homemade. This is no Olive Garden my friends this is the real thing. God bless you Zaza's!!

Dated, stinky, empty, overpriced, generic, dumpy, dark, semi-creepy. OLD SCHOOL MENU, DECOR AND SERVICE. Minestrone soup was watery, oil floating at the top, made with CANNED VEGETABLES such as canned corn and carrots - this is nowhere close to minestrone soup. Salad was TINY, it had a few large pieces of the most generic iceberg lettuce I have ever seen, ONE (yes ONE) small piece of tomato and one circular slice of cucumber. Entree was clearly previously frozen and far from fresh, seemed like a Sam's club type of thing that they slapped together. The decor is beyond ugly, everything is at the end of its useful life dingy and gross. The dining area had 2 or 3 window A/C units in the wall that were buzzing and annoying. We were literally the ONLY people at the place with the exception of a loud mouthed drunk at the bar, a bartender, 2 waitresses and a hostess. This is the type of place that you see on one of those restaurant overhaul shows, it really needs it. The staff was really inexperienced but they were sweet so no complaints, I could understand why a 16 year old gal would work here for her first job - that's exactly who they employ, the girls are all nice and they mean well. You will be punched in the face with the smell of must and stale air. This is a place where the owner has lost their passion or just clueless. Maybe it was better in the past and its just gone down hill? There is a reason that we were the only table in the entire place. I feel bad for giving them 2 stars but thats even gracious.

I've had great food there, but more often it has been a let down. I enjoy the atmosphere, but the prices are too high for average food.

This is one of the better restaraunts in the Fox Lake area. The menu has a great variety of delicious appetizers for any taste, from oysters to bruschetta. Main dishes are excellent, and they always have a long list of specials every night. (Why they are not printed out I can't understand.) You can come weekly for a few months at least, and enjoy a different special each time. I had the Salmon Oscar and it was perfect. Their pasta side dishes are wonderful, you can choose from lobster or bleu cheese stuffed ravioli, or even the simple penne pasta with creamy tomato sauce (which I had) is delicious. The experienced waitress we have had twice now knows the menu very well, is very friendly and down to earth, and instantly puts you at ease, and compliments the relaxed atmosphere of the restaurant perfectly. The building is well maintained inside & out, but is a bit outdated. But what they lack in flashy decor, they make up for 10 times over with great food & service. Highly recommend!

Great food. Drinks seemed very watered down. Great waitresses. Quick seating. Accommodated us changing tables after originally being seated in sort of a cramped spot.

I have been to this little gem a few times and have been delighted each time. When you pull up to the place, it looks like a dive, but don't let that stop you. The food is delicious. If you can't find something on the menu, the chef will make your request! The martini's are outstanding and so is the service. We have been here with other couples and they really let you sit and enjoy the meal. Try this place out and be glad you didn't eat at another chain again!

I have a few years of experience with this place. I used to enjoy stopping in for a good martini and sitting at the bar. I always thought ordering food was a little inconvenient because they had to send a waitress over to the bar stool instead of letting the bartender take the order. I am not sure if they still do this since they re-opened in the summer 2015. You ended up with two checks and two tips. I can see their point about having to take care of both but please take care of that on the back end. Most of my experience has been at the bar but the few times I have eaten at a table (as recently as Sept 2005) the wait time has been horrible. It took over an hour to get my son some chicken fingers and our soup/salad. I think we were in there for 2 hours and there were only a couple other tables. I am not sure if they are just that slow cooking or if there is a hidden agenda to pump expensive drinks while holding the food back. Since there has been a pattern over the years I can only assume it's the drinks. When the food finally came everyone likes it but by that time everyone was a little exhausted and just ready to leave. We ate so much damm bread waiting I was barely hungry and took mine home. I did mention the service to the manager/owner and he did comp a round of drinks. I am just not sure I have the patience to try it again after so many so-so experiences and the high price.

I have a soft-spot for family-owned and operated restaurants and any decent restaurant in the Lake County area gets some extra kudos from me. My experience here on my last visit was a bit odd, though. I stopped in with my son for a pre-movie dinner and figured 1h30m was plenty of time to eat and get to our show in Fox Lake. We sat at a table that had a AC register that was just blowing on us even though it was cool outside and we got rained on before walking in. We asked the waitress to turn the thermostat up and when nothing was done ended up blocking the register with napkins to keep from shivering. Our first course was grilled calamari and although the squid itself was perfectly cooked it was sitting in something that looked and tasted like oregano water with almost no seasoning. This was worst Calamari dish I've ever had. Service-wise the app came 30m after arrival and after 1h nothing else came. We had to get our pasta dishes made to go and ended up being 15minutes late for our movie. The good thing? The pasta which we ate at home following the movie was great! Just not sure I will go back.

Walking in the restaurant it smells of mildew. Very old and needs renovation. The food is not very good and not very Italian! They do give huge portions however the food is very bland and not authentic at all. Service is ok. They really need to fix the mildew smell as it is very un-appetizing! I would not recommend this place.

This place had the worst service I have ever experienced. Took 2 hours to get our meal from when we came in. My stuffed shells were decent. Garlic bread, pasta with garlic & oil, and my son's chicken tenders were nasty. I would urge others to steer clear.

Ok, Gordon Ramsay would have a heart attack if he visited this place. We were a party of 11 on a Sunday night, and we had sat down around 5. The decor is pure garage sale, the chairs are covered with old and dirty fabric, and the bathrooms are funky. It took 10 minutes for everyone to get their drinks, even though we were on of 2 tables in the place. Now here's the kicker. THEY WERE OUT OF RAVIOLI!! WHICH ARE FROZEN!! I had the eggplant rottilini, which came with FROZEN VEGETABLES! My daughter had chicken saltimbocca, which looked like vomit on a plate. But they were out of twice baked potatoes. As for the other meals, I couldn't tell you because I just wanted to get out of there. Now the reason I am writing this is because I really hate spending money on frozen crap like they serve here. The bill for 3 of us, including 3 drinks from the bar was 82.00!! Oh, and the mussles in white wine sauce,no-uh-uh, just melted butter with huge slices of garlic. BLECH!!!

Food: good Experience: horrendous This was one of the two craziest experiences in my life at a restaurant. I had read all the reviews beforehand so I knew to expect slow service, which is exactly what we got. No big deal and the waitress had only been there a week. We asked for separate checks and she was very meticulous about keeping them separate. Our food came slowly, but everyone was happy. In fact, one of our party said her steak was the best she ever had and sought out the owner to let him know and he brought his 25 year old son/chef to our table to receive the compliment. It all went downhill when it came time to pay. The waitress came over and said the owner decided it was easier to split our bill evenly between the parties. It caught us off guard as the waitress was so meticulous about keeping the checks separate all evening so we said we'd prefer they be kept separate. No joke, about 45 minutes passed and no check. I finally decided the waitress must have gotten confused and went to find her to offer to help. She told me they rang it up together and that's the only way they can do it and she has to try to separate It out after the fact. We finally got hand written papers with wrong amounts on them. We were charged more than the menu prices for food, charged extra for things we had no idea we were being charged for and they still split the drinks between all of us even though 2 people had no alcohol. All in all we were there three hours, with a crying waitress, and an owner who cared more about teaching the waitress a lesson apparently than the experience of his customers. All he had to say was it was her fault because they don't do separate checks on the weekends and she should have known that. Mind you, they literally only had two other tables the entire night. To the waitress if you read this: Get the heck out of there. No one deserves that kind of treatment.

Wanted to try this place for a long time and when a groupon showed up, we decided to go there for our anniversary dinner. Server seemed new so we didn't think anything of her lack of enthusiasm. I didn't like the drink I had so we spent it back, the owner wouldn't credit the bill. He made me get another drink. Ok. The broiled fish had no flavor, the veggies were tasteless. Then when we tried to use our groupon, we were told they couldn't take it and we'd have to come back. Um, not our fault they didn't have a scanner to take the groupon, he could have credited the bill or something. The owner didn't even bother coming out from behind the bar to speak to us. He relayed all messages through the server. We will NOT be back there. If I could give zero stars, I would.

its simple. I have lived in fox lake for 3 years now and when i go out the house to eat and have a drink i go to zazas. The food is the best italian food in the area and possibly whole county. The people their are nice and helpful when making my decisions for dinner (ask about the Sam special). The decor is nice but what i like most is the fact that its a classy joint that makes me feel like im at a hidden gem in this town full of burgers and bars.

Had been a family favorite until last year when we had a horrible waitress named Melissa. She was actually hostile toward me and indifferent to my husband and son. We decided to try again as this was always my sons favorite place. The place was completely empty except for 2tables of2 and 1 man at tje bar. We were seated in the bar for some unknown reason. Our waitress was again Melissa who apparantly didn't remember us and was fairly pleasant. Our service started out slow and became painfully slow. After the soup we were told they ere holding our salads until the chef caught up. Half and hour later tje salad shoes up with the wrong dressing and tje waitress told us to try the ranch she served us that it was good and we would like it. Another half hour passed before we received our entrees which except for forgetting butter and sour cream on the potatoe were delicious. While waiting we witnessed a person in a chef hat and jacket visit the bar twice and go back to the kitchen!!when we looked for our waitress to bring the missing butter and sour cream she was nowhere to be found. The bartender grudgingly brought us butter but no sour cream. Throughout the entire ordeal there was no apologies from the waitress. Worst dining experience ever!!I have a feeling this place is on it's way out which saddens me because we have such great memories of better times at za za. I am prompted to think there is business going on there that has nothing to do with food. The uncaring attitudes of all involved is inexcusable!

5 stars for service 2 stars for food 3 stars for ambiance The decor is dated but comfortable. It's dim with little white lights which is nice but the carpet is kind of dingy and the barstools look like something out of a 1980's disco! :) Overall it's got a charm that I did like. We ordered shrimp de jhonge for an appetizer and it was fantastic! For dinner we ordered filet mignon and eggplant paremesan but were informed a few minutes later that they were out of filet mignon ( it looked really good on the other tables!) So, we split the eggplant parmesan. Eggplant was overbreaded and very chewy, kind of like it was frozen or something? Anyway, the sauce was nice and flavorful... Salads simple and good but the blue cheese dressing was like a ramekin of mayo with a couple of blue crumbled in it - didn't really have a nice flavor or texture. In spite of that, I WOULD go back and try some other dishes here. All the guests seemed happy (we did not have a bad time at all) and I would like to try their filet mignon and perhaps some of the other seafood dishes because the shrimp dejhonge appetizer we had was delicious. The service was fantastic and we felt welcome and comfortable. I'll go back and give it another try for sure!

Wow. First of all, what a blast from the past! The first thing that hit me was, 'Wow this place smells like my grandparents' house'. From there, it went downhill. First we were seated next to an obnoxiously intoxicated couple, our waitress was a total twit, and there was a hair in one of our dishes. For the price of our final bill, our experience was subpar. When we attempted to complain (nicely) to the waitress, she just shrugged us off like it wasn't a big deal. We will not return.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
