Gourmet Frog Bakery

Reviews:
Best bakery on the planet. Thoroughly enjoyed strawberry mousse cake and an unbelievably delicious white chocolate mousse cake. Each cake was beautifully decorated and made my birthday extra special. The staff handled our request for the strawberry mousse cake with ease and professionalism. Another bakery was asked to do the same thing and we were told they couldn't do it. Good for us in the long run as it's been waaaay too long since we last ordered from Gourmet Frog Bakery. They are at the top of our list for all of our special occasion desserts from this point forward! Job well done.
Ordered a napoleon cake here for a party. It was very good and gigantic. I wish they could do a 1/4 sheet instead of half a sheet being their smallest. Its quite pricey but its worth it. Im looking forward to more calories.
Best bakery in the Chicago area by far. You have to try all cakes, tarts and bread. You will not regret it. It is worth every bite. The Price is right on top of it. Froggy is highly recommended.

I almost don't want to leave a review for fear they will get more crowded. I love the food - salads - po boys - the specials - have all been outstanding. I eat here a couple times a month and have never had a bad meal (although I have had a bad seat - some tables should just not be)
We are lucky to have Lucky Fish! Great for a ladies night out! The salmon was very fresh and tasty.
I had the lobster roll. The lobster was very over cooked. The tarragon mayo was flavorful. Bread hot and buttery. I just wish the lobster was tender and not hard as a rock. We also had the oyster poboy which was very good. The bananas foster was tasty. Since many people have raved about the food I'm willing to give the place another try

Starbucks

950 Sheridan Rd
Highwood, 60040
Reviews:
Since Hubby and I moved, this has become "our" Starbucks. In fact people that know us think we picked our new place because it was close to a Starbucks... And this one is a good one. It took some time, but the folks here know us. It's small, but has some good seating. No fireplace or anything like you you might find at a fancy Starbucks... But it suits us just fine. The staff is so friendly. However, sometimes they get a bit preoccupied with the drive thru customers... But that's ok. Having the drive thru keeps the inside less crowded. It's always neat, clean, and never too crowded. With a friendly staff, what more could you ask for???
I am not a big fan of coffee, I know - sacrilegious! This review is of their drive-thru service. I have been here a few times and they are always helpful, courteous and friendly. Always willing to help and efficient! There IS more to Starbucks than coffee, I am finding out and with the muffins, chai and other teas and such, I may need to rethink my stance on coffee ...
When I am in the North Shore area this Starbucks is always my first choice, not just because it's close to Lake Forest where I Live, Because the people that work here are Super.Nice. They really go out of there way to make your visit special and always say hello and goodbye.

Clucker’s Charcoal Chicken

760 Sheridan Rd
Highwood, 60040
Reviews:
Tried this place on a whim- surprisingly good!!! Few items that aren't chicken-based but one would expect that. Elaine liked her brisket so that's a word to the wise among the non-chicken fans.
Had chicken enchiladas, werent bad maybe a little dry, but there was a bone in my enchilada so there's that. Rice and beans ok too. Overall not bad but probably wont go back.
Ordered takeout from Clucker's the other day and it was great. My friend had the quarter clucker (dark meat) with roasted veggies and she loved it. The chicken looked quite juicy and she said it had great flavor. The only thing I noticed was that it didn't appear to have that "Charcoal" look I was expecting. I had the mac and cheese with chicken and it was just alright. I could tell the sauce was not homemade. I bet it is the same stuff they put on their cheese fries. They do put goat cheese on it which gave it a little bit of a zing but nothing to go ga ga over. I would recommend skipping it. The caesar salad we had was really good and was enough to serve 3 as a side. A total must is the bread pudding. I am a total sucker for bread pudding and it was awesome. It was studded with cranberries and they literally doused it in caramel sauce. I could certainly go for some right now :) Previously I have had the roasted veggie salad and it is an excellent option if you are a vegetarian. If you are in Highwood and want to try something new, I think you should give it a try, just stay away from the mac and cheese. Sorry just my opinion. :)

D’s Coffee Shop

495 Sheridan Rd
Highwood, 60040
Reviews:
I want a coffee.... oh a coffee shop I'll drive in..... As soon as I walk in this place didn't feel like a coffee shop. They have baskets of donuts and signage in the font that screams 'Dunkin Donuts'. But they have some pasteries that I only see at Mexican bakeries. The coffee is either drip or from a one button machine (push latte for a latte, push cap for a cappucino...) This was disappointing. So I decided to skip the coffee. The wife and I then noticed that they had a juice bar. A bunch of your usual suspects and then some sort of green healthy drink. It had nopal cactus, spinach, cucumber, some other green stuff, oranges, pineapple, and a little bit of oats. It was all thrown in the blender and then directly into a cup. The flavor was great, the quantity to price was also impressive. If I was this place I'd try to advertise my fresh juices more.
This is the perfect place to go if you want to avoid the snootiness of the surrounding area. It doesn't have any fancy decor but the atmosphere is still warm &friendly because the guy who runs the place is welcoming & fun. I come here specifically to get the green juice described in a previous review as well as their veggie torta, which is both cheap and delicious.
Cute little unassuming place run by some of the friendliest people I have ever had take my order. Pretty good fresh donuts i think made down the street at Tom's Pastry. Another good independent local business worth supporting in my humble opinion.

Froggy’s French Cafe

306 Green Bay Rd
Highwood, 60040
Reviews:
A delicious French cusine restaurant - just a word to the wise - they are closed on Sundays but the food is great - you can also do wine tastings by reservation, as well. Smoking is not allowed in the eating area but if you really crave one - go to the bar. A you-select menu and a chef-selected menu of hot and cold appetizers, sorbet, entree and dessert are available for a fixed price at lunch and dinner ($28.95 and $35, respectively, at dinner, less at lunch). I totally recommend their Lobster in vanilla sauce. Service is great and you pay for the quality of the food!
Always loved this place! Really, really good food! I have never been disappointed everytime I come. The escargo there is amazing!!! best I ever had! The only down-side is the main dining room. I don't care for the bright room and noisiness. Infact, I enjoy the ambiance much more in their bar area. If possible, I try to get a table there instead...much nicer.
I'm giving them the big five based on our dinner tonight. We have eaten at Froggy's many times over the years; they are the surviving North Shore French stallwart, which once included Alouette, Le titi De Paris, Gabe's, Carlos and of course Le Francais (Resaurant Michael is a relative newcomer). Unlike most restaurants today their main dish includes lovely mashed potatoes and vegetables which are a great accompaniment. Tonight we shared the snails appetizer (look at that escargot!) which came in a bubbly hot iron pan with a lovely pastry and garlic cream sauce; the snails ($9.95) were not large or numerous but quite tasty. We then each had a bowl of the fabulous creamy mushroom soup which is not always on the menu but we order it when it is; the soup has a strong smokey base and the slices and pieces of mushroom are a revelation - a true bargain at $5.00. Entrees come with a small but tasty salad with lettuce, carrot, beet and radiccio in a creamy vinagrette. For entrees we had a lamb shank in a sweet orange sauce and a classic sweetbread preparation - both excellent. We shared a very nice bottle of Malbec (Trapiche, Argentina) at a reasonable price. Meals are accompanied by good bread and butter service (refillable). Water and wait service is excellent; the chef is not particularly affable - he visits his favorites but not everyone, but over the years he's stopped by a few times and I don't really need a Gabe's type kow tow so I'm good with that. The dining room decour has been refeshed due to interesting lighting; as always the chef's wife's art work is on the walls and makes for interesting viewing. Several meal combos are always available. highly recommended.

Buffo’s

Reviews:
I'm pretty new to hanging out in the Highland Park/Highwood area, but Buffo's definitely makes me want to stick around! Had dinner there with the BF and his parents, everything on the table looked delicious. The spread included italian beef, pasta with meat sauce, and an Ollie's special pizza for me (full of veggies) The pizza was perfect. The crust is thin and crispy, and the cheese to veggie to sauce ratio was spot on. I also like that they offer individual pizzas (even though I still only ate half.) The atmosphere at Buffo's is casual, order and pay at the counter, they'll bring the food to you. Seems like it would be a great place to catch a game on TV, meet up with friends for drinks and dinner, or just have a casual meal. What impressed me most about Buffo's? The wall of condiments. Something for everyone. I like it!
It was good, but nothing really to write home about just yet. Had the BBQ Chicken Sandwich. Enjoy.
Favorite thin crust pizza around. Pizza, cheese fries, buffalo wings. Not sure I've ever wandered to anything else on the menu. Terrific root beer too!

McDonald’s

McDonald's are McDonald's. And this one certainly fits the bill. Fast drive through service. The food is always hot and fresh. My boys get McDonald's on Friday nights. And the one thing I've learned is I ALWAYS double check the toys in the Happy Meals. There's nothing worse than getting home and discovering super girlie pink toys for two rough and tumble boys, which has happened to us a couple of times over the years.
Well...it's McDonald's. It's clean. They've never messed up my order. Hate to cut this short, but let's be honest...it is what it is.
Disgusting......had breakfast and was sick with a massive headache the rest of the day....I've had breakfast at Sally's and the Starbucks next to McD's many times and never got this sick from their food. The only people that can eat this trash must never eat anything healthy to begin with. It's breakfast, McD's. What on earth are you doing to a simple staple like breakfast. Never again. Gross.

Cafe Pettopia

This is our favorite breakfast place in town. It's definitely less crowded on week days than on weekends, if you have the choice. I've never had a bad dish, but our personal favorites and the blueberry pancakes & eggs Benedict w potatoes. Oh, and the staff is always super sweet and accommodating!
Servings are huge. I ordered omelet which was decent. The French toast were really well down. Lady who served us was very nice the whole time. Definitely made us feel welcomed. I took one star off because I found a little thread in my omelet. Seemed liked a thread from a flour bag or something. Everything else was great. The place is a little pricy then a regular breakfast place.
Love Cafe Pettopia. Me fav's are the Italian Frittata and the huge bowl of oatmeal with bananas. Small neighborhood cafe with great personal service.
